Anacapa Yacht Club Mainsheet Volume 2012 Issue 7 July 2012 Commodores Report: BILL BRAYTON Here we are in the middle of the year. Notice I didn t say the year is half over. No we are smack dab in the middle of a great year at AYC. Wet Weds are going well with a steady number of boats in attendance each week and with all the great volunteers we have working the clubhouse things are running as smooth as ever. We also have a very active cruising fleet. We have several boats headed to Catalina for the 4th of July. As I write this the club is having an overnighter to Little Scorpion anchorage the 30th-1st of July. Speaking of the 4th of July, if you and yours find yourself in town for the midweek holiday come down to the harbor and enjoy the day. We have a great little hometown parade down Harbor Blvd. Stay and play around the harbor after the parade. I believe the fireworks show starts at 9pm. It s always a great display. I want to get all the AYC members up to speed on how things are going for our upcoming Anacapa Yacht Club Disabled Veterans Sail Day (AYCDVSD). We are going to have fifteen disabled vets from the Naval Base Ventura along with their support staff and 4 local vets that found out about our event though the flyer we distributed. Most, if not all of the vets from the Navy Base Ventura are flying in from around the country. These vets are spending a few days on the base training for the various athletic events that they compete in against other bases around the country. We have a total of 30 Vets and support staff coming to our club to go sailing for the day. There is a flyer in the Mainsheet with an outline of the day s activities. We have all the event sponsors lined up. Jersey Mikes at Seabridge Center are providing all the food for the event. I am very proud to say that we have fifteen boats coming together to take these Vets sailing for the afternoon. Fourteen boats are AYC members and one boat is being chartered from Marina Sailing by good friend that works with me. The boats that we will have out on the water are: 1 Our Porpoise 2 Maine Squeeze 3 Hubba Hubba 4 Flying Carpet 5 Wizard 6 Defender 7 Sea Dancer 8 Sunny Girl 9 Enchantress 10 Ruckus 11 No Compromise 12 Paradise 13 Sunrise (a new member) 14. E-ticket 15. Fox Hunter

I hope to have local media coverage for this truly exciting event. I have been in contact with the Ventura County Star, the Log and I have contacted the Coastal Angler publication as well. Who knows? If this turns out to be as great as we would like perhaps we can make this an annual event. Indeed we are in the middle of the year, the middle of summer, the middle of Wet Weds. The year is not half over I say. We have another half a year of excitement and fun here at AYC Sea you at the club or out at the islands. Bill Brayton Commodore

Vice Commodores Report: MIKE TAYLOR Hello members and friends: June has been very active. Wet Wednesday's continue to be action packed and filling up the clubhouse each week. Even with big weather and seas we saw a great turnout. Big thanks to all that helped out. Of course Joleen behind the bar. In the galley we had Walter, Rick Barett, Don Lehman, Bill, Tina and John Koester. Great job everyone. We get a breather coming up for the 4 th of July. Our June Dinners started out with homemade fried chicken from Isabella and Mack, which I must say was some of the best fried chicken dinners I have had in a long time (Cherri does not make fried chicken :-) Then the Underwoods treated us to Wood Ranch BBQ. On the 15 th we had the 1st of what might become a tradition, Commodores BBQ which included myself, Bill and Joe all taking part in burning (I mean cooking) the meat and preparing all the fixins, we had a great time and good turnout. Last Friday, being a little short on cooks we decided to do a pizza, popcorn and movie night, showing Pirates of the Carribean, it was an easy evening. Eric and Shawna are treating us to Mexican food from one of their favorite resturants in Santa Paula I am getting hungry thinking about it. Eric and Shawna were scheduled last week but he was in Long Beach scoring 7 wins at the Olson 30 Nationals on Blue Star. Well done. It is extra sweet when a local boat goes to Long Beach and kicks butt. Friday July 6 th is still open if there are any takers for doing dinner. Cherri and I are out of town. If not we will settle for anchor watch. Let me know if anyone is interested. FRIDAY OD SCHEDULE - JULY Fri 7/6 - OPEN/Anchor Watch Fri 7/13 - Listing Fri 7/20 - Dickman Fri 7/27 - Alcorn/Castanon If you are scheduled for a dinner and have trouble getting it done on a Friday we can probably change it up to a Saturday evening just let me know. Dinners can be as easy or difficult as you make them, but we AYC members are a helpful bunch, just reach out to a few of us and see how much fun it can be. New members, we got em! Please welcome Tom Trimbach and Jennie Hudak to our Club, they just happen to have a Catalina 32 on H-Dock named First Draft, who raced her first Wet Wednesday a couple of weeks ago! I wish everyone a wonderful July 4 th and God Bless America. Best regards, Mike Taylor AYC Vice Commodore

Rear Commodores Report: Joe Underwood Ahoy Members and friends, Just to recap some of the great times at the club for the month of June, we have been having some great weather that is bringing out the racers for our Wet Wednesday series and filling the clubhouse for the after race awards presentation / BBQ. There have been some great races out on the water. Randy Alcorn has been bringing home the trophies to the club with a first place in the Commodore s Classic and a first place in the Governors Cup. Mike Taylor and crew on Main Squeeze have been ripping it up on WW taking first in Spin A on Larry Listing is back out with Predator, taking first place in Non Spin. So all the AYC boats have been mixing it up on the racecourse. The cruisers are getting a jump start this last week in June and are heading out to Scorpion Anchorage for an overnighter and then heading out to Catalina for a week long stay in Cat Harbor. For the month of July AYC has no weekend racing going on so this month will give us a chance to focus on the Wet Wednesday Series. AS most of you know July 4 th is on a Wednesday this year and there will be no WW race. So lets get out on the water and enjoy the fine weather and have some fun. July Racing: July 7-8 Ventura Yacht Club Sail fest (J-24 & PHRF) July PCYC Milt Ingram (Island series #2) July PCYC Pac Cor Cup #3, Yachting Cup (windward/leeward) July SBYC Fiesta Cup July SBYC/KHYC Santa Barbara to King Harbor July 28 PCYC McNish Classic Yacht Race July Cruising: June 30-July 1 Scorpion Anchorage July 2-8 Catalina Island s Cat Harbor July Smugglers Cove Have a great month, and a wonderful July 4 th, Hope to see you all out on the water or in the clubhouse. 9 Sponsor Page THE VENTURA HARBOR BOATYARD Ventura Harbor Boatyard (VHBY) is a successful full service boatyard servicing commercial and pleasure craft up to 160 tons. The boatyard features 160 and 35 Ton Marine Travelifts. The founders, John and Linda Johnson pursued a dream of boatyard ownership after John s retirement from the aerospace industry. Originally named Ventura Quay Boatworks, the Johnson s and partner JP Prideaux purchased the boatyard from the original developer of Ventura Harbor Village, Ocean Service Corporation in VHBY has been serving the needs of Pacific Coast vessel owners ever since. In 1999, in a unique public/private partnership, VHBY, and the Ventura Port District invested in a new, state of the art, 160 ton capacity Marine Travelift and pier. This is the largest available Travelift on the west coast between San Diego and the Oregon Border. Upon deciding to retire in 2002, to pursue a lifelong dream of cruising aboard their trawler Carpe Diem, the Johnson s sold VHBY to trusted employees Dale and Kim Morris, Steve James and legal counsel Robert Bartosh. In 2008 Thomas Bowman joined the ownership and management group. Thanks to the foundation laid by the Johnson s and the public private partnership the new owners have never looked back, having more than doubled the volume of business at VHBY without compromising the quality of service for which VHBY is known.

VHBY has expanded its work force to almost fifty and introduced new and additional marine services including complete marine electrical, stainless steel fabrication, and expert rigging while maintaining its reputation for superior mechanical repairs, metal fabrication services, paint and fiberglass work. VHBY strives to maintain the highest level of quality by investing in its employees continuing training and education in vessel and mechanical systems repair and maintenance. VHBY s customer base includes luxury and commercial vessels from as far away as Alaska and San Diego that return to VHBY for regular repairs and maintenance. This is in addition to our regular customers from the local maritime industry. VHBY is one of the few boatyards on the West Coast still allowing do-ityourselfers, which is a plus for both commercial and recreational vessel owners. 11 925 L Street Suite 220 Sacramento CA SUMMER 2012 COPPER-BASED ANTI-FOULING BOTTOM PAINTS Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC) is pleased to announce and supports the decision of Senator Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) not to pursue SB 623, which is the legislation she authored addressing the use of copper-based anti-fouling paints for all recreational vessels in the State of California. RBOC President Cleve Hardaker noted that RBOC has been engaged on SB 623 since the introduction of this significant measure, advocating our concerns with the provisions of the proposed legislation and its potentially tremendous impact on recreational boaters across the state. President Hardaker also observed that In all probability, this bill would have resulted in a ban on the use of copperbased hull paints by recreational boaters. RBOC has been actively lobbying the State Legislature and the Executive Branch of state government since the initial legislation was proposed. Representatives of RBOC have testified at numerous committee hearings as well as actively negotiated with the author, sponsors and other interests. President Hardaker further commented that Throughout the process, RBOC has continued to maintain its position that consideration of restrictions or bans on the use of copper-based anti-fouling surfaces must be based upon sound science, and that any such restrictions or bans must be accompanied by the following findings: (A) alternatives to existing paints exist, (B) these alternatives must be affordable i.e. comparable to existing paint prices, (C) each alternative must be as effective as existing paints in controlling marine organisms and growth, and (D) the paints must be able to be applied over existing bottom paints. Hardaker also stated that New science and methodology calls into question the basic premise of new laws of state-wide application such as SB 623 that would, in all likelihood establish a ban on the use of copper-based anti-fouling paints on recreational vessels within the next few years. This ban would have applied even in areas where copper has not been found to present a situation requiring regulator action. Senator Kehoe s decision not to pursue legislation at this time is positive, as it will enable the new science and methodology to be taken into consideration before laws are enacted. Support RBOC RBOC represents all California boaters and operates solely on donations from boaters like You! We need your help. w RBOC encourages members of sailing clubs, yacht clubs and boating organizations to contribute a minimum of $20 per boating family per year. w Boaters who do not fall in the above categories benefit from RBOC s activities and are also asked to contribute $20 per family. It is easy to make a contribution either mail donations to: RBOC, 925 L Street Ste. 220, Sacramento, CA OR donations may be made on-line at using Discover, Visa, American Express, MasterCard, or PayPal. Donations are not tax deductible due to RBOC s extensive lobbying efforts.
