1 Breezes AND Blows Ocean Springs Yacht Club October Front Beach Drive Ocean Springs, MS From the Commodores & the OSYC Board The OSYC Annual General Membership Meeting will be Monday, November 6, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Please mark your calendars, and make plans to attend if at all possible. There will be lots of topics open for discussion, based on the feedback and suggestions the Board has received during the course of the year. The issues are varied, but include items like guest policies, initiation fees, cash/charge policies, and, of course, revenue options. Much of this will be guided by input at the upcoming November 2017 Annual General Membership Meeting. Your attendance and participation in formulating these questions will be very much appreciated. Please stay tuned for additional meeting information, including an agenda, Board approved 2018 Slate of Officers and Board Members, and any updates that may be required related to these meeting items. You will be electing your OSYC Slate of Flag Officers and Board for 2018, plus addressing other items to be presented by the current OSYC Flags and Board members. Those items will be listed in an official meeting agenda that will be presented to you in the very near future, along with the slate of Flag Officers and Board of Governors for 2018, which will be approved and presented to you by your current OSYC Board. Once this process is completed, all items will be available for your consideration at through the Information for Members tab on the left side of the page. That page also includes links to PDF files containing the current By-Laws. If you would be able to arrive a little earlier than the published start time for the meeting, you will help us with getting everyone checked in on our current membership list. If you are a voting member in good standing but unable to attend, you may complete and submit a Proxy This form is included in the October newsletter, and will also be available on the OSYC web site ( on the Information for Members page. 2 IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING BAR BUCKS: Beginning October 1, 2017, Bar Bucks will no longer be available for sale or purchase at the Club. Bar Bucks will still be available for their original purpose of rewarding volunteerism and contributions above and beyond the call of duty. Apologies go out to the families and friends of Past OSYC Commodores Butch Knight and Andy Adams, and also to Dicky Moore and Pat Sheehan. The latter two Past Commodores were mis-identified in the OSYC September 2017 newsletter. 3 Words of Wisdom and More from the Rear Commodore Italian Proverb: Anni e bicchieri di vino non si contano mai. (Age and glasses of wine should never be counted.) Greetings from the Party Commodore! I am pretty sure the proverb above held true as our members and guests enjoyed another OSYC Walk- Around Wine tasting on the 22 nd of September! Without a doubt, our friends who served the wine brought some of the most scrumptious hors d oeuvres we have had yet at these events!!! Roger Gardner out did himself (again!) with delicious homemade pizza and his stuffed mushroom creation that was to die for. The marriage of flavors prepared in Chianti really popped and if you didn t get to try a mushroom it is because you were not fast enough! Now we know that Roger really does cook with wine and some of it actually makes it into the food! Shannon Smith and Steve White poured Primativo that paired beautifully with the bruschetta and got the highest number of 5 as a score on the rating cards. Neal Olive and Dawn Smith served pesto bread and pizza bite casseroles that Neal has perfected. You should invite them for dinner and ask him to cook for you! The chocolate covered bacon, which Dawn is becoming famous for, did not go home with them either. Who would think that bacon and chocolate would go with Italian wine?... Sorry, bacon and chocolate go with EVERYTHING! Diane Farris and Brenda Gardner skewered some tomatoes and mozzarella caprese sticks that unquestionably were directly responsible for the winning white wine s high number of votes. Kim Rivard brought her special, super-secret goat cheese and I noticed that the pub table with her recipe was crowded all evening. Marilyn Minke whipped up some extremely delicious butterscotch brownies from a recipe she developed, and we carried home only the bare platter. The additional preparations by our new OSYC chef, Bertrand, were also a big, big hit. He prepared bruschetta, calamari, and mussels that kept him running all night to keep up with the demand. I am delighted as the wines make it a party, the food is taking center stage at these events! We are so fortunate to have such great talent at our club! Speaking of talent, we were excited to have three of Ocean Springs local artists display their talents during the tasting. Rita Meadows, Bonnie Furey, and Sarah Qarqish and Morgan Welch of the HannaBerry Workshop kept the participants entertained with their original creations, adding class to our evening. Please let your Club Manager, Chris, and his staff know how appreciative you are when you see them. Chris insight into the Italian themed event provided the atmosphere and fun that only a dedicated manger can provide. He actually had Dean Martin on Pandora... made me want to sing! As we focused on Italian wines we were only able to scratch the surface of what the country has to offer. Every region in Italy has its own unique wine and they are all delicious! I am glad we are able to introduce some of the classics for your enjoyment. The Antinori Orvieto from Umbria is a clean, crisp, refreshing white wine that could be very popular by the pool or watching the sun set. The easy drinking, balanced Bottega Vinaia Pinot Grigio from extreme Northern Italy gives you an option for another lightbodied white. Santi Valpolicella Classico is vinified in a unique way that makes this wine from the Veneto region very special (If you are interested in the story, ask me when you see me at the club I love to talk 3 of 10

Sunday, November 5 th. I have been able to staff Supervised Sailing at least one day each weekend for the last month.

5 From the Fleet Captain, Jay Shuman Greetings Members! The calendar says it is fall but it still felt like summer at the beach last weekend We have one more month of sailing left the Club Boat Sailing Season ends when Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 5 th. I have been able to staff Supervised Sailing at least one day each weekend for the last month. If you are interested in a specific Saturday or Sunday let me know and I ll try to set it up for that day. We have had both young and old(er) customers for Supervised Sailing and all have had fun use it while it is still around!. The sailing program comes back Sun, Mar 11, The OSHS Sail Team held sign-ups a few weeks ago. This year we had 22 kids sign up, including a few returning from last season. The sailing team is sponsored by the Ocean Springs Sailing Squadron (OSSS), the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to youth sailing. OSSS also runs the beach & kayak storage and sailing instruction programs. The profits from those activities plus donations from our sponsors make it possible for us to equip and run the sailing team - thanks for your support throughout the year! Speaking of beach storage, my thanks to all who did the right thing by registering and paying for their boat, kayak and trailer storage. By doing so I am able to contact y all about things of interest (informal races, hurricane preps). Not only do your fees support the high school team; they also helped us buy the O Pen Bic sailboats for the youth sailors, and to keep the other Club boats running. I am embarking on an aggressive campaign to clear out the boats and trailers that are on our storage yard but are not registered or paid. If you have a boat or trailer down there and haven t registered, please be aware that free storage is not one of the benefits of your OSYC membership. I want them gone or registered and will make that happen. It isn t fair to those who do the right thing to permit any squatters. The Last Big Sailing Event for this year is the Shearwater Regatta, October 21-22; it will be two days of buoy racing off of the Club. We just heard back from Shearwater Pottery and the pirate trophies are ready. If you think you have what it takes to earn one of your own come on down and race This year s Shearwater will feature a chili cook off on Saturday night at the conclusion of Day 1 sailing. I have heard rumors of some great chili recipes out there - come on down & excite our palates! The rules are totally open your chili, cooked at home, and then brought down to the Club. If you want to buy a gallon at Broome s and claim it as your own we re good with that, so long as it s tasty If you are interested please let the Minister of Fun our Rear Commodore Chris Minke know ahead of time so he can provide necessary coordinating details. Remember the sailing program at OSYC is run by the Ocean Springs Sailing Squadron (OSSS), the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to youth sailing. 7 News from the Social Committee Events on the calendar at the OSYC during the month of October will once again be taking place with assistance from the Social Committee: Shearwater Regatta: Saturday & Sunday, October 21 st & 22 nd Any and ALL Club members are asked to please donate breakfast casseroles for Saturday. They need to be warm and ready to be served at the Club by 8:00 a.m. First Annual Chili Cook-Off Saturday evening at the Club (check your Constant Contact message for information; also, please see Fleet Captain Jay s section. Halloween Activities: Plans are in the works for Halloween activities for children and for adults during the last weekend in October. Please stay tuned for more information on both of these! Save the Date: The annual OSYC Drawdown..."Sailing Thru the Holidays" is scheduled for Friday, December 1 st, Ticket sales will begin in October. Social Committee Meeting: Our next Social Committee Meeting will be on Tuesday, September 5:45 p.m.; any interested Club member is invited to attend, and to be a part of the Social Committee. OSYC Pool Reminders Daily Pool Use Fee for Guests ~ $ 1.00 (Required by our OSYC By-Laws) Please secure any umbrellas, return pool furniture to its space, and clean up after yourselves when leaving the pool area. Our current Club hours are: Thank you! Club Reminders 10:30 a.m. 9:00 p.m. on weekdays, 10:30 a.m. 10:00 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and Sundays 10:30 a.m. 9:00 p.m. State ABC Laws prohibit outside alcohol being brought on property. Please don t be the reason we lose our Liquor License. As always, when you have a concern or a question, please inform your Club Manager, OSYC Flag Officers, or an OSYC Board member so that they can work to resolve issues for you in a timely manner. 9 2017 Annual General Membership Meeting Proxy Rules Section 4. Only Class A and Class A/C members in good standing may vote at a general membership meeting, except that: (a) In the absence of a Class A voting member from a general membership meeting, the voting privilege may be exercised by the spouse of such member. (b) In the absence of both member and spouse, a member in good standing may designate a proxy to exercise the voting privilege. The proxy shall be a Class A member in good standing, which does not include the spouse of any such designated Class A member. (c) The written proxy must be designated as a general or special: In the absence of such designation, the proxy shall be considered as special, and restricted to voting on specific matters in the published agenda of any such meetings. (d) No member designated to vote a proxy for another member may transfer or sub designate such proxy.
