3 Happy New Year, I hope you had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. Personally we spent our Christmas travelling from one end of the state to the other to spend time with our loved ones. Thank you to those members who contributed gifts to our Anglicare Christmas drive, we were in a position to present a variety of gifts for those less fortunate. Please take some time to consider to which charity we should forward donations for Christmas A number of members spent their New Year s Eve at the club, welcoming in the New Year, watching not one display of fireworks around the lake, but four; we were privileged. Followed by the Opti Cup on New Year s Day, and winners were: Will McKinstry, followed by Lillian Maher & Paul Cooper. Unfortunately over the holiday period we have had some visitors accessing the club via the fence on the boat ramp side of the club. These visitors were seen looking in and under boats around the area outside the sheds. At this stage we have not had any reports of things missing other than one prior to Christmas. May I ask all members to be vigilant and report any strange activities. If you have photo or video of the activities it would help should we need to report it to the police. Could those members who are interested in being placed on the caravan site waiting list please contact mcgregorandreagayle@gmail.com by expressing your interest? We currently have two spaces available and would like to offer them to current members in order of application date. Our outdoor kitchen project will begin on Sunday, 12 9am. This is an opportunity for those members who find it difficult to attended scheduled working bees to contribute their services. Ron Mason will be managing the project on the day so bring yourself, your work clothes, your shovel/pick and lots of enthusiasm. A lot can be achieved in a single day by a lot of members sharing the load. Please or phone Andrea McGregor, Ken Mann or Ron Mason to confirm your attendance. Morning tea and lunch will be provided to all who attend. On Saturday, 4 9am a members forum will be held in the club rooms. A number of activities and proposals will be discussed on the day, so mark the day in your diary and we will see you there. Finally toward the end of summer and the beginning of autumn we will be refurbishing the garden bed outside the common room, between the caravan site and the building. We are restricted to native plants only according to guidelines of our lease agreement. If you are interested in being involved with this project please let us know. Any help is welcomed. 4 Ken is travelling in NSW at the moment, but sitting on the banks of a river near Orange surrounded by some very noisy cicadas one evening, he was able to phone through some notes to be included in this month s Mainsheet. Ed. =============== Next month - Sunday 12 February - a working bee will be held to commence on the outdoor kitchen. It s a 9.00am start and it s hoped that a lot can be achieved on the day. On Saturday 4th March a Members Forum will be held commencing at 10.00am. It has been quite some time since a forum has been held and member contributions are welcomed and can be provided beforehand in writing to the Secretary BeYC, or can be raised at the meeting. Some topics to be discussed will be: Protocol, upgrading of the internet, club Safety Handbook and a code of conduct. We have the BeYC Australia Day Regatta coming up on the of this month and the notice of race is on the club s website. Thankyou to Magic Marine who have agreed to once again sponsor this event. It is hoped for good weather and good wind. It s also hoped that those who are not racing can hop in and lend a hand with the many jobs that are needed to be done to make this weekend a success. Contact John Maher if you are available to assist. As Andrea has mentioned in her report, there seems have been a few unsavoury characters hanging around the club recently. As a result of this and other incidents a Security Plan is to be drafted in the near future. Our communication system needs to be upgraded and this will also be implemented in the near future. The Annual GMW audit will be done on 31 March. Finally, Ken is very happy to report that we have 22 new members at our club who are very warmly welcomed. Mainsheet January 2017

6 As in the past few years, New Years Day saw some enthusiastic sailors competing for Bendigo Yacht Club s Opti Cup. It was a late start and with the ages of the skippers ranging from pre-teen to post sixties, the little boats took to the water in fluky conditions to do battle for the prestigious trophy. It was great to see some of our younger members joining in this year and the winner was Will McKinstry, followed by Lillian Maher, Paul Cooper, Fraser McKinstry, Mark Gillies and Col Nankervis. Great to hear the news of Mick and Di Floyd s second place in the 45th Mosquito National Titles at Port Vincent SA. Well done guys. Father and son duo Rob and Alex Lott claimed 4th place. Congratulations to all. Bendigo sailors making their mark. Our first Friday night Twilight series race got off to a great start. With little breeze it wasn't looking good up until our esteemed race officer, Johnny Maher, worked miracles declaring a start to the race through his influence on the wind. The wind varied between 6 to 10 knots, with Mark and Andrea moving ahead along with Russell. The Dunlop's were screeching not far behind. With most sailors doing between 9 and 11 laps, the race was fast paced and enjoyed by all. After a great sail, many enjoyed a BBQ along with some good company. Preliminary results worked out on the night suggested Russell in first place followed by Mark & Andrea in Hawkeye with my Swashbuckler in third place followed by Hugo & Donna in the Taser Think Positive. Well done to all. Official results can be seen on the club s website Steve Phillis Members who race should check their insurance policies regarding the sail cover, especially regarding the spinnaker. Check to see if the cover is suitable for the racing at our club and other events. Some policies have a high premium loading to cover racing damage and have racing restrictions. 10 Next month the cruising group are planning a Sunday cruise to the Armstead Estate Winery on the Heathcote arm of Lake Eppalock where a BYO picnic lunch will be enjoyed in the gardens of the winery. It s hoped that club members will join in and make this a great day, and for those that don t wish to sail but would like to join in for lunch, the winery is only a 15 minute drive from the club on Moorabbee Road Knowsly. The cost is $5 per head for the use of the gardens and this is reimbursed with the purchase of wine.
