Kendall Morris pours and leads discussion, as we sample our favorite adult beverage. Participation is easy and fun! Each adult buys a $10 ticket and brings 2 six-packs of a favorite or new-to-you brew. One six-pack will be tasted and the other will be set aside for participants to take home. We ll be sampling beers from all over the world and learning about what goes into making different varieties. Join us for a fun, cool afternoon! SUMMER SAILSTICE JUNE Summer Sailstice is the official international sailing holiday held on the weekend closest to the summer solstice. This year s 9th annual event will be on June There s nothing official planned at TSS, so sail away on your own holiday! Check the Summer Sailstice website ( to see what other sailors around the world are doing, or to see what other local sailors are planning. Signing up makes you eligible to win one of over 300 sailing prizes, including a one-week Moorings charter in the BVI. Editor: Kevin Gil lighthouse@fusionproductionsinc.com
2 From The Helm Looking for something to do this summer? Upcoming activities planned are a weekend excursion in June to the twin Dolphin Marina in Bradenton, an ever popular cruising seminar by Bill Cullen in July, and an awesome Beer Tasting event on July 4th hosted by Youth Sailing to name a few. Check the calendar on our website for more information. There is a lot of work happening behind the scenes by club members who are working hard to formulate strategic plans to ensure the viability and success of TSS well into the Future. One instance is the finance committee headed by Greg Johnson and aided by some of our highly respected members who have devised a plan to rebuild our Main Dock. You ll be seeing and hearing more on this over the next three months. A special committee chaired by Jim Allen will soon be making recommendations to improve our new member induction process and develop ways to attract new members to this great club of ours. Eric Nodland is chairing another special committee to look at ways to improve upon our compliance procedures. Eric will be reaching out for members to participate and I encourage you to attend. In the April issue of From the Helm I mentioned that if someone has difficulty making it to work parties to contact me for alternative projects and I want thank Jeff Hardwick who did exactly that! A special thanks to Jeff Olson for building an addition to the railway shed and repairing the clubhouse drywall that was damaged by a water leak recently. Hugh Moore and Al Sera invite you to the cookout prior to every general membership meeting. We could use someone to keep an eye out on E-Bay and Craig s List for used Lasers, Sunfish and parts to keep our fleet going. Interested? Give me a call. Go out there and Sail for the fun of it! Ken Boucher Commodore 2
3 Secretary: Lynn Levert BOARD NOTES May 4, 2009 Finances: Accounts in arrears were reviewed by the Board. The $636 cost of repairing the water damage in the men s head will come from the repair budget. A printer/copier will be purchased. The Watch budget was approved and will be posted in the Clubhouse. A member s request for early redemption of his $1,000 promissory note was denied. Membership applications are in progress for Brian O Leary, Joseph Alfred, Don Schwartz, and Ralph Salgado. The ad hoc committee on membership will be presenting recommendations for Bylaws amendments, among them, eliminating probationary membership, expanding junior membership to include college students, and requiring 2 Club activities during a 60-day period, as well as a casual interview with the Membership Committee to cover the club s expectations and answer questions. Railway time is available. Contact Mike Antoniadis. Dock Finance and Repair Proposal: A slide show at the June 15 member meeting will cover all details of the proposal, which will also be posted in the clubhouse and published in the Lighthouse. The members and Board will vote on proposed bylaws and rules changes to implement the proposal. Repairs are projected to begin in early A long term goal will be to increase the disaster recovery fund from $100,000 to $200,000. The condition of boats in the mooring field was discussed, although the Board noted that TSS has no official jurisdiction over the mooring field. The smoker and grill must be thoroughly cleaned after use. The backflow preventer has passed inspection. Cruising: All 5 boats returned from the Newcomers Cruise by way of Pass-a-Grille, which counts as a Beyond the Bridge experience. The next cruise will be to the Twin Dolphins Marina on the Manatee River. A number of cruisers plan to leave on Friday to get a head start on festivities. Racing: The Bay Area s racing and regatta calendar will be final soon. TSS s racing and regatta schedule will be published and posted, and s are being sent to the racers. Youth Sailing: Thanks to several TSSers, who have made exceptional contributions to the program. The YS sailing season starts June 15th for 8 weeks. Orientation for instructors and assistants will be June 6th. The Observer News is doing an article on Youth Sailing and TSS. The Board approved 2 free dry slips for the Youth Sailing program and confirmed the program s free dry slips. Argh! The next covered dish dinner will feature a prize for Best Pirate. 6 Dockmaster news and notes June 2009 I am grateful to all who called, ed and sent cards during my recovery from surgery. I m walking with a cane, but nonetheless, walking. You'll see me around the club and please, feel free to call me at or me at Ttro721@aol.com Thank you to Willie Friar for checking the docks and property daily and to John Stocksdale for overseeing the project activity in May. A big thank you also to Frank Ciufia for running the work party in May. I m looking forward to seeing many of you at the June 20 work party. Please come early for breakfast. The galley is open at 8:00 a.m. Bring a friend! 1. We ll be cleaning up around the dingy area and trimming the branches in that area. 2. We ll clean the barbeque, patio and bar area, so we can all have a good time there. 3. We ll hose down the porch and tidy up the house. Hosing is a great way to cool off. Come casual and let s make our assets shine! Everyone who is serving on the HAT Team (Hurricane Action Team) will meet on the porch at 11:00, the morning of the June work party. To gain access to TSS when roads are closed during an evacuation, the emergency response unit for Hillsborough County needs a list of HAT Team names. A reminder to all Captains and crews: Double your lines, using rope in good condition. If the lines are not in place, TSS will put them on, but each boat owner will be charged for lines N we have to place, so please do your own. Lines on wet slip boats must be adjustable from the dock. Let's all think Hurricane Preparedness and do our part. See you all at the Club. Thank you. Tom Troost W E S 6

9 Port Supply Procedure Here are the guidelines for TSS use of the Ship 185 Port Supply account. 1. only designated TSS persons can use the account: Commodore, Vice Commodore, Dock Master, and an Assistant Dock Master. 2. It can be used for any purchases used by the Squadron itself. 3. it can be used to purchase materials to be used by Squadron members for work on their boats on the TSS haul out. This includes bottom paint, tape, solvent, sandpaper, epoxy repair, barrier coats, etc. Other items that come up can be considered on a case by case basis. This use of the discount for members, rather than the club, is to benefit the club by encouraging members to haul boats at TSS. It can t be used if a member is hauling at another facility. The member will need to get with one of the TSS designated purchasers in advance, so that person can buy the materials. ARRR!! CALLING ALL PIRATES IN TAMPA BAY COVERED DISH DINNER JUNE 20, :00 P.M. 13 YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO ATTEND THE TAMPA SAILING SQUADRON INTERNATIONAL COOKING AND EATING SOCIETY S (TSSICES)* 1ST ANNUAL 4TH OF JULY LOW COUNTRY BOIL (AKA Frogmore Stew) This boil will be offered along with the Youth Sailing Program s Beer Tasting Event on the Saturday, July 4th at 1400hrs. Reservation deadline Saturday, 27 June 09, 2000hrs. Sign up: Sea Scout Bulletin Board Deadline required to have sufficient time to order shrimp, crawfish, etc. $12 person Served: Low Country al fresco (newspaper table cloths, a plate, plenty of paper towels. (Bring your own fork if you can t eat FROGMORE STYLE with your fingers!!!!) History: Once called Frogmore Stew, this one-pot wonder was created by a National Guardsman when he needed to cook a meal for 100 soldiers. Richard Gay, who learned the recipe from his family, had everyone remembering his stew. The dish was later named Frogmore, where Richard was from, by the guards who teased him about home. The postal service eliminated the name Frogmore, which changed this popular dish to Low country boil. This seafood dish is a combination of shrimp, andoullie sausage, corn, onions and red-bliss potatoes. Great for relaxing trips to the beach, it is also easy to create for a crowd. Low country boil can be served on newspaper for easy clean up. Crab, and butter are frequent additions to the pot, and having a removable drain basket only makes cooking easier. The rule of thumb here is the bigger the crowd, the bigger the pot. Beer, beer and more beer a necessary beverage for this dish. Low country Boil Recipe: small red potatoes, water, bag of crab boil seasoning, Old Bay seasoning, kielbasa and andoullie sausage, ½ cut ears of corn, crawfish, large fresh shrimp, Cocktail sauce. (Adapted from Southern Living, August 2002 and Real Simple, August 2001) *TSSICES IS A NEW GROUP BEING DEVELOPED TO FURTHER AND FOSTER THE ENJOYMENT OF COOKING, EATING AND THE CELEBRATION OF FOODS THAT ARE A JOY TO EAT!
