If your sailboat is being propelled by a motor, you are no longer considered a sailboat, and must obey the powerboat rules. APOLLO BEACH LIGHTED BOAT PARADE DECEMBER 15, 2007 Once again, TSS, with the cooperation of the Apollo Beach Chamber of Commerce, will sponsor the Apollo Beach Lighted Boat Parade. We urge all members of the club to dress up their boats and help put on one of the finer Lighted Boat Parades in all of Tampa Bay. Fortunately or unfortunately, Charlie Bruno has sold Therapy so that gives everyone an inside track on Best in Show. Mandatory Captain s meeting will be held on the morning of the 15th at TSS at 8:30AM for registration and instructions on the Parade route as well as safety tips. A chili cook-off for all members of TSS and participants of the parade will be held in the clubhouse directly after the parade. Awards will be given out then. Barbara Mellens has graciously volunteered to coordinate the chili cook off. For info on the chili cook off, call Barbara Mellens at For information on the Boat Parade, call Bruce Gocek between 6:00PM and 8:00PM at Editor: Kevin Gil lighthouse@fusionproductionsinc.com

From The Helm Volunteering: Why Should I Do It? People volunteer for a wide variety of reasons, especially wanting to help others. Think about how much you receive when you give and consider why you want to volunteer. You may have several different reasons. Here are just a few: To demonstrate commitment to a cause / belief To be part of a team To be an agent for change To stand up and be counted To keep busy For recognition To donate your professional skill To have an impact For escape To become an insider To make new friends For fun! To have an excuse to do what you love To assure progress To feel good Volunteering here at TSS is also a way of saying thank you. It s a way of recognizing the countless others who, in big ways and small, have made life richer and better through donations of time and effort here at TSS. Your club will have many events for you to participate in and/or contribute to in a small or big way. Regattas, Youth Sailing, Club Cruising, Club Races, Covered Dish Dinners, Lighted Boat Parade, US Sailing Mount Gay Rum Speaker Series with Dave Perry, Halloween Island Party, Membership Meetings, Board Meetings, Commodore s Eggnog Party and let s not forget the Promissory Note Drive. Embrace the opportunity! The club and the world are not perfect places and many organizations and people need help. You can make a difference. If people never help each other and only care about themselves, the world becomes a crueler, sadder place. But when we volunteer our time, money, or talents, we help make our planet a better, happier home where people work together to make life easier for all. So, roll up your sleeves and get involved. Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. Mark Twain Commodore, Ed Johnson 2

BOARD NOTES October 1, 2007 Let s give Michael Pilert, Rich Kuehne, Jim Hoffman and Bill Fishbourne a warm welcome. They re our new friends and crewmates in the Club. Replacing the stolen hoist straps cost about $600. They ve been stenciled and are in the Dockmaster s shed. The D. Heil has been repaired and is ready for the regatta. Report any electricity problems, so they can be fixed; we re turning now to the dry slips. A concrete Secretary: Pat Austin slab will be poured for a new barbeque for big events and the old barbeque will be demolished. A slab will be poured for a new dinghy rack. The Board approved up to $500 to switch the railway from the 3 phase electrical panel to the single phase. The panels are rusting out and the wires to the railway are aluminum; these repairs will need to be made in the next few years. In October, we re working on the water recycling system and the groundwater monitoring well. Contact Darla Vegenski to schedule your railway haulout. Payment, copies of boat insurance & registration and signed rail/haul agreement are due 30 days in advance! All Club events, committee meetings, cruises and races are on the Club calendar, on the website, www. tampasailing.org and in the Lighthouse. The racers and cruisers have separate webpages, with loads of information and photos, as well. TSS members have members only pages with our financials, meeting minutes, updated roster and all sorts of information. Check it out. Anchor out or take the water taxi to our Halloween Party on the Island (Pierce s Paradise). Thanks to our members who serve breakfast and lunch at work parties and refreshments at membership meetings. TSS s LIGHTED BOAT PARADE is Apollo Beach s December holiday celebration. It s December 8. Gene DiNisio has volunteered for the after parade chili cookoff and party but we still need your help with the parade and an organizer for the total package. Mark your calendar December 15 at TSS for the US Sailing Mount Gay Rum Speakers Series. The Promissory Note program now stands at $31,000 and 46 members. Help us meet our $50,000 goal. Last chance-- The roster is going to print. Please check the updated roster in the members only pages at or your last year s roster. If your address, phone number, , boat or spouse information has changed, please send me an (pat.austin@saxongilmore.com) and I ll alert the Treasurer and Lighthouse editor, too. The Ship s Store (Mike Antoniadis and Bill Horn) will have a display case in the Clubhouse. Also check out the on-line catalog. 3

COVERED DISH DINNER October 20, 2007 COME PARTY WITH THE BRATS! 5:00 p.m. SOCIAL HOUR (BYOB) 6:00 p.m. DINNER Host s, Vivian and Gary Challen, are providing bratwurst and suggest that sailors bring appetizers, sauerkraut, German potato salad, dessert or anything else that goes with bratwurst. A head count is needed for the meat, so please sign up at the club or call Beverly at (813) Dear Tampa Sailing Squadron, I wanted to take the time to thank you for sponsorship at the Prince Of Wales regional area D match racing regatta held at Lake Ponchatrain Yacht Club. We had a great regatta and qualified for the finals, in Newport, RI. All the plans were set to go to the finals until the doctor grounded me from action and I was not able to attend. I heard that the team finished mid-fleet respectable. Once again, thank you for the sponsorship and we appreciate everything that T.S.S. has done for us. Sincerely, Scott E. Peters PRINCE OF WALES SPONSORSHIP TSS looks forward to putting a team into place for the 2008 season. Well in advance of next year s Prince of Wales. If you are interested, please see the Racing Fleet Captain. Thanks again to all who contributed money at the general membership meeting. This was truly a great opportunity for TSS. Ed Johnson 4

Dockmaster Dave Squier DOCKMASTER S REPORT September was another great month for the club. The club house and grounds are in great shape. The dry slips and wet slips are all looking good and the new rail haulout facility is being fine tuned, making it one of the best in Tampa Bay. We haven t had any hurricanes, so what can we complain about? Well, it was recently discovered that someone has either borrowed our lifting staps for the hoist and has forgotten to return them, or they have been stolen. The club just purchased a new set so that we would have them for the Fall regatta, the price tag was approx. $ So, if you borrowed, or know who did borrow them, please bring them back. If you know who stole them, call me. My fellow members and I would like to invite him to a private work party. Also, the club is taking applications for Dockmaster for the next watch. Let me or the Commodore know. Don t be shy, it s a great job... thanks, see you at the club. Any questions, call me. Dave Squier Dockmaster, TSS NEW YEAR S EVE AT TSS We all know that remembering everything that happened at your High School Prom is difficult. The Forgotten Prom will be brought back this New Year s Eve. The dress code will be widespread, from Tuxedo s to Tuxedo T Shirts and everything in between. For the ladies who may not have saved their prom dresses, if you like, you can join Barbara s Tag Team. Simply buy the least expensive dress, leaving the price tag attached and you could win a valued prize. (Hint Goodwill, Salvation Army and second hand shops all have beautiful and inexpensive prom dresses and Tuxedo s of various colors and cloths. Polyester included). Music will be furnished by Music on the Move from 8:30PM to 12:30AM. Light finger food will be supplied throughout the evening along with champagne at Midnight. Snacks and ice will be on the tables. Of course it is BYOB. This gala evening will be presented for $20.00 a person. We suggest you make your reservations early for the seats fill up quickly once the word is out that the mighty TSS Stage Company will be doing one of their flamboyant and colorful productions. 13 Cruise Schedule Tampa Sailing Squadron Upcoming Cruise Schedule By Len Berkstresser, Cruise Director October 27th Halloween at the Island Cruise. We are planning a ghoulish time at Beer Can Island with a bon fire, costumes and games for all. Susan Bishop is the host for this activity. November 3/4th Lightning Hockey Cruise to the Tampa Convention Center. We will cruise to the convention center to enjoy a happy hour with the Davis Island Yacht Club, dinner at Channelside and the hockey game against Atlanta. We had a great time on this cruise last year. This cruise is once again hosted by Bob Sardo. November 22/23rd Thanksgiving cruise to DeSoto Point and National Park. This TSS tradition involves a cruise to DeSoto Point and a Thanksgiving Day Celebration. Many people drive down to Bradenton while others enjoy the short cruise there. Share in the feast and fellowship with other club members. This activity doesn t yet have a host couple. If you are interested in organizing this activity, please let me know. December 1/2nd Christmas in the Park Cruise to Vinoy Basin. St. Petersburg has a big Christmas celebration with a parade, light display, arts and crafts festival. The celebration is well known around the bay area. Ken and Jan Boucher are the hosts of this activity. December 15th Apollo Beach Lighted Boat Parade. Many TSS boats will join in the flotilla around Apollo Beach. Join in the fun of decorating your boat or just riding along with others to celebrate the holiday season. TSS will serve refreshments at the Clubhouse. January 19th, 2008 Ybor City Pirate Invasion Day Cruise. Many boats invade the Garrison Channel basin as a prelude to the Gasparilla Invasion, which follows the next weekend. A festive time is had by all as a tune up to the plundering which will take place the following weekend. This activity is just as much fun as Gasparilla but a little less crowded. Bob Bettinger is the host of this activity. February 16/17th, 2008 Cortez Commercial Seafood Festival Cruise. This cruise will take everyone to the little fishing village of Cortez which is on the Northern edge of Sarasota Bay. This two day festival highlights the fishing heritage of the area along with local seafood recipes, and arts and crafts. Tom Troost and Jeanie Irwin will host this activity. March 15/16th, 2008 Emerson Point Park Cruise. This cruise will take us to the Manatee River on the North shore, opposite DeSoto Park. There is a very nice anchorage along with picnic areas. We will have a covered dish dinner there hosted by Bill and Elaine Cullen. 13
