SA Youth Tri Series report continued... ASC s Jake Wilson in action at the third leg of the Tri-Series held at Adelaide Sailing Club. In the Laser fleet Josh Hinks maintained his stranglehold on the Laser 4.7 fleet with a dominant overall victory in the entire Tri Series regatta. In the 22-race series he only missed out on first place on six occasions, either to Radial sailor John Gordon sailing a smaller rig size or to former 420 crew Alexander Newman. Alexander Newman was second overall in the final standings, closely followed by Sarah Dredge in third. John Gordon dominated the racing in the Radial rig claiming a solid victory. Harrison Barrett and Sarah Short also raced in the Radial at various times throughout the Tri Series and were third and fourth respectively. Two 29ers hit the water at the final leg of the Tri Series with a pair of interstate sailors in Adelaide ahead of the nationals getting in and testing their skills on the new waters. Scott Whitehead from the Townsville Yacht Club, sailing with Sarah Short from the Adelaide Sailing Club, sailed against his sister Breiana Whitehead, who was sailing with Adelaide s Harry Mitton. Sarah Short managed to come away with a win. Special thanks to Down Under Sail for their coverage of the event, and for the amazing photos. ASC s John Gordon, winner of the Laser Radial fleet. 3 Commodore s Report Darren McPherson our Commodore provides a reminder of the happenings at ASC s opening day for and a summary of theevents that have taken place over the Christmas and New Year period at Adelaide Sailing Club. Welcome to the January Edition of Tell Tales. Rio Olympian Ash Stoddart officially opened our season on Saturday the 15 th October 2016, the weather gods weren t kind and the sail past luckily was cancelled. The 38 foot yacht Hula- Hoop that President David Royle managed to borrow for the sail past was not able to navigate the Glenelg channel due to seagrass build up. I was not looking forward to Plan B. Following the official opening of the season the Flag Officers, with members of the Board and the Committee spent the afternoon networking in the in the Regatta room with special guests, Flag Officers from our neighbouring clubs and our members. This also gave our junior and youth sailors a fantastic opportunity to interact and spend some quality time with Ash Stoddart and hear all about her journey and preparation for the Rio Olympics. The third leg of the YSA tri series was hosted by ASC on the 17 th and 18 th of December with ASC junior and youth sailors winning the overall points club trophy. Well done guys and testimony that our Sailing Development Group is doing a great job. The Peter Lehmann Laser Nationals and Australian Youth Championships hosted by Adelaide Sailing Club over the Christmas New Year period was an outstanding success. With over 450 competitors our race officials and volunteers are an absolute credit to Adelaide Sailing Club building on our fantastic reputation of running world class regattas and providing a much needed financial boost. A special thanks to our dedicated volunteers and to all who supported us on and off the water, including Brian Sorrell and Martin Hinks who made their private boats available, Dan O Connell for supplying and erecting the temporary fencing that provided security for the horde of coach and support boats that the regattas attracted. A special mention to Somerton Yacht Club for providing not only a finish boat but crew as well, Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club, Goolwa Aquatics Club, Port Lincoln Yacht Club for the use of their support boats, and Glenelg Surf Lifesaving Club for providing a RIB and crew for on water first aid support for the Youth Championships. The canteen ladies have once again done a marvellous job in providing lunches not only for the sailors but also for the numerous volunteers. Congratulations must go to Jason Heritage (Jacko), Marc Ablett and James Hughes on winning the 74 th Australian Sharpie nationals titles at Mordialloc Sailing Club, right behind him in second place was Chris Wendt, Harry Fisher and Tom Manhood and Luke Stephens and crew finished in 3 rd Place. A special congratulations also to Ben Schulz came third in the recent Fireball World Championships in South Africa. As you would have noticed there have been many staff changes over the past couple of months. I thank all members for their patience and understanding as our new staff adapt to Adelaide Sailing Club. 4 Vice Commodore s Report Malcolm Hughes our Vice Commodore provides a summary of all the excitement and events that have taken place over the Christmas and New Year period at Adelaide Sailing Club What a massive month over the Christmas / New Year period. Adelaide Sailing Club again excelled in running two of the largest events seen in South Australia. The Peter Lehmann Laser National Championships and the Australian Youth Championships attracted a total of over 400 entries with over 500 competitors from every state in Australia and many overseas countries. On top of this, 50 plus coaches, 60 volunteers per day and of course parents and supporters swelled the club and created a great sailing event and carnival. Sailing was top shelf with a wide range of age groups across the three Laser variants and 420s, 29ers and sailboards. High level sailing skills were on display and racing was conducted at the highest level by our loyal band of skilled volunteers. Conditions were quite varied with some challenging weather some days but Lasers completed 11 of their planned 12 race program and the Youths completed all of their planned 10 race schedule. In total, 98 races were conducted over two or three course areas. 18 race management boats were used with the club s boats supplemented by loan boats provided by Australian Sailing SA, Somerton Yacht Club, Goolwa Aquatic Club, Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club, Port Lincoln Yacht Club, Brian Sorell, Martin Hinks and Henley Sailing Club. David Tillett, Darren McPherson, Sir James Hardy at the welcoming ceremony of the Youths. The events and the Club were promoted by constant media exposure throughout the events. Beau Outteridge was sponsored by Laser and Australian sailing to produce video clips of the sailing each day and Down Under Sail was contracted to produce interviews, stories and photographs for daily posting. Australian Sailing s media department was also present to prepare media stories. High quality media was posted via social media every day. I recommend these posts to anyone who has not yet seen them. In addition, Laser sponsored the use of Trackers across both events. Spectators could view racing live on the Club TV and a world wide audience viewed races live or on replay via the internet. Recent Olympians from the Australian Sailing Team were in attendance. Ashley Stoddard competed in the Laser Radial, again winning the women s Australian Championship. Tom Burton, Laser men s Gold Medallist was our guest at the Laser Presentation. Carrie Smith, women s 470 opened the Youth event and Lisa Darmanin, silver medallist Nacra, presented prizes at the Youth Championship. Local identities Sir James Hardy and David Tillett also presented prizes at the Youths. The Australian team for the next World Youth Championships was chosen and presented at the conclusion of the Youths. Catering was a feature of the events from a Coffee van and Peter Lehmann tent to the ASC canteen and catering operations. Praise was continually received for the Canteen s daily feats and for the catering operations, especially in meeting the complex needs of 400 plus presentation night dinners. Many thanks to all who contributed to the success of these events. The SA Laser Class for their determination to again create an Adelaide Laser Nationals to remember, Australian Sailing SA for their support and especially to the Continued over page...

Vice Commodores report continued... extremely large dedicated group of volunteers who worked tirelessly over this extended period. Our regular volunteer group who continually put their hand up for our wide range of events for any of our classes were supplemented by volunteers from other local clubs, particularly Somerton and people from interstate. Well over 100 people volunteered their services to contribute to the success of this regatta. Many thanks to all. Our attention now moves the second half of the club sailing season. The Melges State Championship was a success last weekend with racing over Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. We have Club Championships on Sat 28 th Feb, Sat 4 th Feb, Sat 25 th Feb and Sat 18 th March. A highlight will be the 50 th running of the Fisher, Peterson, Tillett Regatta on Sun 12 th March. Many senior members have fond memories of sailing themselves in this regatta as juniors. Make a date to come down and be part of the celebrations of this 50 th year. 6 The Tillett Twins Part 2 of The Amazing Exploits of the Tillett Twins, written by Barry Allison. Part 2 focuses on the achievements of Chris Tillett, you will have read about the achievements of brother David in the October edition of Tell Tales.. Continuing on from the achievements of David Tillett...meanwhile, brother Chris had been very busy in the yachting scene and has been most active in Fireballs and 470 s before continuing a long career in keel boats. From 1972, Chris skippered Fascination over many years and in 1974 competed in the World Championships conducted at the Glenelg Sailing Club with Richard Thorpe as for d hand and gained a creditable sixth place. Then over the next eight years, Chris won four National Fireball Championships with Mick Rogers as for d hand at Lake Catharabra in Queensland, at Belmont Y.C. on Lake Macquarie, N.S.W., at the Glenelg Sailing Club, and in the National and World Championships at Frankston in Victoria, and won both the Nationals and the World Series. This was a remarkable period of sailing for both Chris and Mick and set remarkably high standards for this class of yacht. Chris spent many hours at night with Doug and Joan Humphries in their Power Edge sail loft learning many of the sail making skills, and also gained a lot of knowledge from his association with prominent yachtie Colin Smith at that time. Then in 1982, Chris decided on changing classes to the Olympic 470 dinghy and set upon a long program of training for the next Olympics in Los Angeles in This involved competing in the World 470 Championships in New Zealand in Fascination V was the leading Australian yacht in that series. This preceded the Olympic Trials conducted in March,1984, and with Richard Lumb as for d hand, won selection to compete in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Olympic experience was a taste of world competition with the boys finishing 21 st in a fleet of 28 yachts. After the Olympics, Chris took a year off from sailing, being disappointed with the Olympic results, and decided to go back into Fireballs again as there were large fleets of boats and great competition. With Craig Watkins as for d hand, they won the National Championships in at Glenelg. Then back into 470 s again in with David Clayfield up front. They competed in the National Championships in sailed at the Brighton & Seacliff Yacht Club and won this series. After previous Olympic experience, Chris decided to go after Olympic selection again for the Games in Seoul in South Korea and teamed up with Brett Young to enter into a long training program. They won the National Championships sailed at the CYCSA and went on to win the Olympic Trials with two heats to spare. Selected teams were then reviewed by the Olympic Justification Tribunal to be ratified for inclusion and unfortunately were not approved on grounds that are still not clear. In 1988, a team of keen Adelaide yachties was formed to compete in the Lexcen Cup, which was the brainchild of the Yachting Association of W.A. and was named after the well-loved, eccentric Australian yacht designer, Ben Lexcen. The team consisted of Chris Tillett as skipper, Chris Pratt, Robbie Deussen, Peter Wall-Smith, John Amber and Jon Morris as crew. Fred Neill was the Team Manager and David Tillett was the Rules Advisor. The chosen craft were the Farr 36 racing yachts which were used during the inaugural World Match Racing Series and the Challenge Bank Australia Cup which were sailed off Fremantle, W.A. The event was sailed in November 1989 at Fremantle and saw top skippers and crew from all over Australia compete for the Chris Tillett and Richard Lumb sailing the 470 in 1980

The Tillett Twins Article Part 2 continued... title of Australian Champions. Chris led his team to victory and won the $25,000 prize that was donated to Yachting S.A. for future support for junior interstate travel grants. On return to Adelaide, a civic reception was held in the Adelaide Town Hall for the victorious team. Chris then took another year off sailing before deciding on his next phase of sailing in the Noelex 25, which was owned by Chris, David and John Cowled. They raced as a team and won three National Titles from 1990 to They competed in the Inter Dominion series in New Zealand, and also won Australian Championships in Mumm30 s, Farr 750 s, Noelex Clubman s and Etchells over the next ten years. Most of this sailing was done whilst a Member of the Cruising Yacht Club, as well as the Glenelg Sailing Club and his exploits were recognized being elected CYC Yachtsman of the Year in , , and quite an accomplishment. He was also awarded the Australian Sports Medal for Services to Yachting in Since then, Chris has been crewing as a tactician with Geoff Boetcher on Secret Men s Business - a TP52, and Shining Sea, Beneteau 45 owned by Andrew Corletto at the Cruising Yacht Club. He has also sailed in many Adelaide Port Lincoln races, but does not relish competing in the Sydney - Hobart race. He is a Life Member of the Fireball Association and has been a Member of the Glenelg Sailing Club - now the Adelaide Sailing Club for 53 years. Today, Chris and his wife, Suzanne, enjoy holidaying at Port Douglas. Chris keeps himself very busy as Managing Director of Tillett Natural Stone Industries, and is involved in many projects locally and interstate including stone work on the Anzac Walk, paving in King William Street, North Terrace and the Parliament House in Darwin. His company has also been involved with major projects such as the Sydney Opera House and the National Gallery in Canberra. So this has been a short two part story of David and Chris Tillett prominent yachtsmen and business men who have excelled through initial grounding from the Glenelg Sailing Club today the Adelaide Sailing Club and continue to be active Members. 8 Finn Nationals Guy Maegraith provides an account of his adventures with Neville Wild and Chris Juttner as they competed in the Australian Finn Class National Titles in NSW this January. At the urging of the ever enthusiastic Chris Juttner, Neville Wild and myself joined him to compete in the Australian Finn Class National Titles in New South Wales between 16 January and 21 January The series was hosted by the Royal Motor Yacht Club, Pittwater (located a short drive north of the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club). Chris had his trailer modified to take two Finns and we put a third one onto the roof of his vehicle. And so with this impressive rig we travelled together to the regatta taking two days and enjoying the hospitality of the delightfullynamed Palm & Pawn Hotel/Motel at Wagga Wagga on the way. The Notice of Race advised us that most of the racing was planned to take place on the Palm Beach circle in the open ocean off Barranjoey Head. This course was approximately seven miles from the club. Tows were to be provided to get to and from the racecourse. Alternative courses were proposed in the event that conditions in the ocean did not allow for racing there. One course was just inside Pittwater adjacent to Barranjoey Head. The other was inside Pittwater and closer to the club. Given that most of the competitors had not experienced towing Finns there was some trepidation about the process and how it would work. More of that later. The entry list was eventually 33 Finns including Ed Wright (two times Finn Gold Cup World Champion) and Oli Tweddell (experienced international Finn sailor who narrowly missed selection for Australia for the Rio Olympics). We were sailing in esteemed company and it was a privilege to share the racecourse with these accomplished champions as well as a number of other very, very good Finn sailors. Another competitor of note was Mark Jackson from Victoria who has won 6 OK Dinghy National Titles and is a relatively recent newcomer to the Finn Class. the swell from the Tasman crashing over the rocks at its foot. Day 1 Two races were scheduled for the first day and we were notified that they would take place on the Palm Beach Circle. All of the Finns were launched down the (very narrow) launching ramp with sails rolled waiting to pick up the tows. As it turned out, there were not quite enough tow boats and there was some confusion amongst several of the competitors waiting to be picked up. Some of the tows worked well. Others not so well. Some people had to stay in their boats (which was not the plan) and the whole exercise was not without its difficulties. Eventually all of the boats made it to the lee of the Barranjoey Head where we hoisted sails on the water and sailed out into the ocean. It was an impressive sight to be sailing so close to the high headland with The wind settled at about knots from the northeast. There were significant delays in setting the starting line due to anchoring issues with the start line pin. The windward leeward course was set at 1.4 nautical miles (approx. twice the length of our club legs). Two races were run and each of us finished both races, which felt like an achievement in itself. There was no suggestion of a tow home and so we sailed the seven miles back to the club. There was general exhaustion by the time we got back to the club after being on the water for over eight hours to achieve two races. Continued next page... The Finns ready to tackle the 2017 Nationals.

Finn Nationals update continued... Day 2 We were sent to the course between West Head and Barranjoey Head at the mouth of Pittwater. There was a southerly which was blowing knots with occasional gusts of 25 during the racing time. Again, two races were run. It was relatively easy to run from the club to the racing area. The racing was good and close in an increasing breeze. Neville finished both races. I had a significant stack at the leeward mark in the second race and was only able to finish one race that day. Chris decided to sit it out in the name of prudence. It was about a five mile beat home after the racing in an increasing and gusty breeze. I managed to get a tow from halfway home but Neville sailed the whole distance. Another exhausting day. By this stage of the regatta Ed Wright was leading with Oli Tweddell second. Impressive youngsters Jock Calvert (from Tasmania) and Ian McKillop (a Pittwater local) were fighting for the minor placings. Day 3 There was no racing on day three due to very light and variable winds. We were at the club for the whole day and there was a lot of boat park talk. I met up with some old friends from previous sailing classes and made a number of new friends hanging around and talking all things Finn. A few beers at the end of the day rounded out what was a frustrating day but also an opportunity to reflect and learn from other competitors. Day 4 The racing was set to take place on the inner course near the club. We went out onto the water in drifting conditions. There was insufficient wind to set a course and we were brought back to the club where it rained heavily for an hour or so. After changing in and out of wet sailing gear we were sent out again for two races in light and shifty north - westerlies. Each of us got our best result in the regatta to that date in one of the two races held that day. That night we were privileged to enjoy wonderful hospitality at the home of Roger and Lorraine Freney, old Rainbow and Sharpie sailing colleagues of Chris and Neville s. Day 5 Racing was set for the middle course in a gusty southerly knots. Two races were run and the series was completed. The three of us finished both races with varying results. We had a very long beat home which took over an hour and then straight into packing up the rig. We then went to the Presentation and buffet dinner where Neville was awarded his trophy for second place in the great grand masters division and Chris was awarded his well deserved trophy for winning the Legends trophy. Congratulations to them both. As a newcomer to the Finn, the exercise was hard but very rewarding for me and I am sure that Neville and Chris would agree with those sentiments. I am told it was a record fleet for an Australian Finn Championships (33 boats) and the range of ages was from 19yo (a very impressive third overall for Jock Calvert) to over 70 for Chris. I felt great camaraderie within the Class and it was a privilege to sail against and observe the level of achievement of sailors like Ed Wright and Oli Tweddell. It must be said that the venue was not ideal but such difficulties as there were were overcome one way or another and we were all glad that we made the effort to attend the regatta. 11 Volunteering is a valuable life-long experience Alan Young provides a brief insight into the importance and value of volunteers at Adelaide Sailing Club. I was just down on the sand dune watching the Cancer Swim at the end of the street when a lady approached me and said, Were you a volunteer for the sailing Nationals? I proudly said, Yes, how did you know? She said, It s on your shirt! My son, Matt also was a volunteer. Matt was in the swim and a Year 11 student who volunteers with the rescue team at Somerton Sailing Club and who gave up his holidays to be part of ASC s successful Australian Laser and Youth Championships. These championships stretched our Club in respect to both human and equipment resources. We have a wonderful band of volunteers and it is good to see young people like Matt, showing an interest in carrying on the tradition! Pre-race briefing for a heat. ASC in full sail after a heat of the Laser Nationals. We had loan boats and crew from Somerton SC, throughout the series, competitor parents from across the nation, boats from Goolwa and many other places supporting us. When several hundred sailors seeking Australian selection along with their support teams, including over forty rubber ducks on the water at once, a Club needs to be highly organized and have the support of all of its members.

Volunteering is a valuable life-long experience continued... A loan coach boat to set the course for the last race as A3 was still at the doctors. Nationals are also a great learning experience in building a Club and an opportunity to learn new skills in a range of areas for both young and old. If you missed out this time, plan to put your hand up next time. You will have an experience that you will remember and make you proud to be part of the Adelaide Sailing Club. A special thankyou to our Commodore, Darren McPherson; Malcolm Hughes, race officer and organizer; Hubert Tucker, volunteer manager and dog s body ; Margaret Gordon and her team in the Canteen who provided miracle after miracle; Lindsay Hembrow, and his Safety Hat to name just a few! There were over sixty volunteers every day in all facets of the Club. Thank you to all in enabling our visitors to go away knowing ASC is a great place to sail and to enjoy with those who have a love of sailing. Alan Young The Duck Pond

2017 Optimist National Championships Junior sailor Myles Wilson provides a personal account of his experiences at the recent 2017 Optimist National Championships which were held at Largs Bay Sailing Club. Hello I am Myles Wilson, 2017 Optimist Nationals competitor. Myles Wilson, ASC Optimist Sailor. I believe that the Regatta was a truly memorable experience for all of the sailors. The Regatta had a good start with the team sailing, which had wind from 5 Knots- 20 Knots. The winners of the team sailing were South Australia State Team Blue! The Regatta had a range of conditions to keep you on your toes with the wind changing every day. The sportsmanship was excellent both on and off the water. There was lots of competition in the regatta, helped by the fact that there were 42 International sailors from Singapore, France, Germany and Malaysia. This helped make the total number registered 262 boats. There were three different levels with green, intermediate and open fleets. This was a wonderful racing experience, thanks to all the volunteers both on and off the water. A Regatta that big cannot happen without them. Also, thanks to the race officers, who helped make a world class regatta. Thanks to the Largs Bay Sailing Club who ran a kids canteen as well as a big canteen for lunches. My personal favourite was the hot chips and milkshakes. It was a wonderful Regatta for all the Optimist Sailors. Also thanks to the Cruising Yacht Club (CYC) for hosting a wonderful presentation and providing a start boat. A display of Optimists at Largs Bay Sailing Club for the 2017 Optimist National Championships.

Melges-24 State Titles Donna Evans provides an update on the happenings at the recent Melges-24 State Titles which were held at Adelaide Sailing Club. There was a little bit on for the start of the Melges 24 South Australian State Titles on Friday 20 th January with 18 knots of southerly breeze and 1-1.5m swell. Our photographer Ally Graham had an interesting time trying to keep stable in A5, which was driven superbly by Peter Royle - huge thanks! Official placings for Race One 1. Red Mist; 2. Rank Bajin; 3; KRAKEN. The fleet enjoyed dinner at the club on Friday night and even with only a half dozen boats, the Melges bring a lot of people, filling the club and bar for as much fun socialising as we have on the water, and it was the same after racing all three days. Racing on Saturday for the Melges 24 South Australian Titles proved tricky with club racing also sharing the course. There were some tense moments with interesting starts, and a few very nail biting bottom mark roundings, with lots of yelling and the occasional Fireball, Div 1 Cat, Finn and more to contend with. Racing with the wider ASC fleet is very enjoyable and watching the competition in the other classes makes a great back drop. The second day of the Melges 24 South Australian Titles was made all the sweeter post racing, with a sumptuous tasting / feasting on Kinkawooka Mussels on ASC s balcony, kindly donated by Andy Dyer from Kinkawooka Shellfish and Red Mist fame! Thanks so much Andy on behalf of everyone in the club, sailors and our volunteers alike! The final day of the Melges 24 South Australian Titles and we started with a NNE 12knts which then started to swing left. The second race went further left and breeze began to fade. A course change and a shortening of the leg length allowed us to get a 40 minute race. The last race was postponed until a light SW breeze settled in. Another course change, a final run to the finish and then the breeze died. Overall Placegetters for the S.A. Titles were Red Mist 1st, Rank Bajin 2nd and Kraken third. Continued next page...

Melges-24 State Title update continued. A selection of pictures from the Melges 24 SA Titles. Fantastic Regatta once again & thank you to everyone involved. Special thanks and mention to Mike Rogers for providing the final report. We now all travel to Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron, Victoria for the Australian Championships commencing February 1st. 16 International Cadet Nationals 2017 Zoe Hinks, an Adelaide Sailing Club junior writes a brief account of her experiences at the recent Cadet Nationals which were held at Largs Bay Sailing Club. My name is Zoe Hinks, and I only started sailing a Cadet this season. I was really lucky to be able to crew for the best Cadet skipper in South Australia, Issy Royle! Issy has been very patient with me and has taught me all the things she knows about crewing. She is a wonderful role model! It has been lots of fun, but also lots of hours of training. The International Cadet Nationals is the first national sailing event that I have sailed in, and it was lots of fun. One of the best things was the chance to meet lots of people from other parts of Australia and to make some new friends. During the regatta the weather was not too good. One day it was blowing a gale and sailing was cancelled, and the next day there was no wind at all. This meant there were lots of times for crabbing, swimming and having fun in the water with my friends. Boat storage area at LBSC for the International Cadet Nationals. I was also lucky enough to be interviewed by Down Under Sail. I was really nervous, and I didn t know what to say, but it was lots of fun watching myself being interviewed on Youtube after the event. The week of sailing at the nationals helped me feel a lot more confident about my sailing, and has made me want to continue further in the International Cadet Class. My dream would be to be able to skipper a cadet in the upcoming season, but I think it would be best if I spend another year improving my crewing skills and learning the role of the skipper. Interna- I did feel a bit sad after the nationals finished, because I really love sailing with Issy, and I will miss not being able to sail with her in the season next year. I m looking forward to finding a new boat and skipper to crew for next season, and I hope that in the future I will then have my own boat and be able to skipper a boat in the 2020 Cadet Worlds which are going to be held in Australia. 17 Sabre Nationals 2017 Mark Soulsby provides an insight into the happenings at the 2017 Sabre Nationals held at Black Rock Yacht Club, Victoria. Six Adelaide Sailing Club Sabre s ventured over to take on the Vic s in the recent Nationals held at Black Rock Yacht Club. A Total of 64 boats competed in the series that had a wide range of breezes, rain, thunderstorms and you name it we had it!! The first race had a bit of everything, with thunderstorms, bucket down type of rain which I have never seen heavier out on the water, and wind going around in circles. Then the 2 nd race was abandoned as lashing rain and increasing wind made for hazardous conditions! A total of 16 boats were black flagged at the starts of the first race, of which there were many due to the multiple general recalls with Mark Soulsby and Ryan Kelly from ASC being victims! Ben Knoop from ASC sailed a very consistent series, to finish 5 th overall for a second time (1 st Wooden boat and 2 nd in Senior Div), while Mark Soulsby cost himself a higher finish due to a second OCS and finished one place behind Ben in 6 th place (2 nd in Grand Masters Div). Next was Ryan Kelly 26 th, Peter Leader 28 th, John Inns 33 rd and Lauren Keil 42 nd. The last race of the regatta saw the overall places turn on their head, after John Holroyd won the last race to jump from 3 rd to 1 st, Scott Olsen fall from 1 st to 2 nd, James McLennan fall from 2 nd to 3 rd, Garry McLennan jump from 6 th to 4 th, Ben Knoop stayed in 5 th, and Mark Soulsby falling from 4 th to 6 th. 18 Canteen Update Margaret Gordon, canteen stalwart, provides an insight into her experiences during the Christmas and January holidays at the ASC Canteen. Question: What do you do when you are on your annual holidays during the Christmas holidays? Margaret s Answer: Run the canteen at the sailing club for the Laser Nationals and Youth Nationals. Well it did happen and successfully! Very fortunately we did not have to run the canteen on the two 40 C days in January! With the help of volunteers from the club and past members it all happened. Who would have thought that making 12 loaves of bread into sandwiches each day would be enjoyable? The interaction with competitors and coaches was amazing, some becoming our best friends during the regattas through their frequent visits to the canteen for requirements. Even when racing was abandoned all the competitors wanted to do is eat and people just appear from the other side of the counter and help. Many thanks to those who volunteered because without your help we never would of being able to feed the race officials, on water volunteers, competitors, coaches and other spectators. Maybe the sailing community could volunteer for an hour over the rest of the season, helping in a small way to ensure the canteen has enough volunteers for each week till the end of the sailing season? Why not give it a thought? 19 Obituaries RIP Roy King Roy King: Died on November 18, 2016 aged 92 years Roy was an enthusiastic and committed member of the Glenelg Sailing Club, and then the Adelaide Sailing club, who made many significant contributions to the club throughout his long life. He served as Flag Officer, Committee member and as Honorary Secretary Manager at Glenelg. He loved the club and he loved sailing. He sailed Sharpies in the 1950s, Yvonne Cats in the 1960s and 1970s and then Trailer Sailers after that. He was also active in rescue boats from time to time, especially when his grandchildren Melissa and Wayne were sailing. Roy s most significant and rewarding contribution was in being the driving force in establishing a thriving Holdfast Trainer fleet at Glenelg after the class had lapsed at the club. With the support of parents and other club members, he instigated a Holdy building scheme in 1960 which soon resulted in an explosion in the number of Holdys and before long there were more than 60, yes Roy King at ASC Opening Day, 2016 more than 60, taking part in club racing. This laid the foundation for what were to be the halcyon days at Glenelg with over 200 boats racing on Saturdays. As the building scheme reached full swing Roy made arrangements with the Legacy Club of Adelaide for Legacy youth to be able to sail in Holdy s which were built under this scheme. This proved to be a wonderful collaboration which provided many kids with the opportunity to sail. The Legacy Cup, a perpetual trophy now awarded to the Opti class, is a worthy and permanent reminder of Roy s efforts in fostering junior sailing. Roy was always committed, in good times and bad. He came forward when the club needed help in 1960, he came forward again in the 1990 s when the club found itself in hard times and took on the role of Honorary Secretary Manager and helped steer the club out of the woods. Indeed, at our last Opening day he was talking to our President and Commodore and offering to do whatever he could to help the club through its present awkward situation. Roy was ably supported and assisted by his wife Vi who also contributed much to the club and Junior sailing. In recent years they both loved to come to the club on Opening Days and the year before last Roy stole the show when he christened new boats for their proud young owners. The photo of the occasion is very endearing and a wonderful reminder of Roy s enthusiasm right to the end. Vi was famous for her flower arrangements which adorned the Glenelg club on Opening Days. Before his days at Glenelg Roy lived at Whyalla where he started the Whyalla sailing Club. In addition to his commitment to sailing he worked tirelessly for the Lions Club, establishing the first club in South Australia and becoming a life member. We offer sincere condolences to Vi, and family. Neville Wild January 2017 Roy King at ASC Opening Day christening Ava s optimist.

From the musings of Mark Haggan... Why did the admiral decide against buying a new hat? He was afraid of cap sizing. I saw a chap managing to juggle twenty rowing implements. It was oar inspiring. I m not one for buoyancy, but whatever floats your boat Big sale on rowing paddles at my local shop. It s quite an oar deal. What keeps a dock floating above water? Pier pressure. My rower friend is really annoying. He s always sticking his oar in. A sailor eating alphabet soup found the seven Cs. A ship load of blue crashed into a ship load of red paint. The crews were marooned. Why didn t the sailors play cards? Because the captain was standing on the deck. Mark Haggan

Message from the Board of Management A message from the board of management about member s discounts at the bistro. Dear members, we are writing to let you know that as part of the broader plan to restore the club's finances, we have reviewed the bistro discounts available to you. As a result: - The member s food discount will be retained: members will continue to receive a 10% discount on food orders other than specials such as the Wed night Schnitzel and Thurs night T-Bone meals - The member s drinks discount will cease from 24 December. This discount was costing the club more than $5,000 per annum and is no longer affordable. - Discount arrangements will be reviewed regularly and hopefully we may be able to offer a revised members discount scheme in the future. While we know that some people will be disappointed, we consider that this step is unavoidable. We ask for your continued understanding and support as we seek to restore the club to financial sustainability. ASC Board of Management What s coming in the next edition of Tell Tales?
