RaPPahaNNOCK RIVeR yacht CLUB IRVINgTON, Va JULY 2018 The headway RRYC Spring PHRF Regatta By Tom Chapman Rattlesnake and Hot Air at a close start) On June 16th, perseverance by Ron Mihills and his race Committee, and patience by the racers paid off in a great afternoon of racing. A little wind came up around 9 am as racers and race committee headed out to the river. Unfortunately, by the starting time of 10:30 am the wind had all but disappeared. Finally, wind darkened water appeared under the Norris bridge about 2 miles from the signal boat and the RC swept into action, moving the marks to new locations and getting the first start off at 12:45 pm! The light winds forecast kept the participant count low with only two spinnaker boats, Team Hot Air (Tom Chapman, Jeff Branflick, Bill DeCoste, Jr. and Jesus Lapera) and Team Rattlesnake (Arabella Denvir, Gary Hooper, Jim Engle and David.) Non-spin boats included Team Hippo (Ed Johnson, Doug Jayne, Allison Jayne, Chris Volk and Bob Damon), Team Pocahontas (Ian Ormesher and Judy Fay), and YPRCC Team Silver Fox (Win Schwab and Jim Bearden). 3 JULY 2018 Page 3 Spring PHRF Regatta (continued from page 1) Ed Johnson s Hippo at the start of Race The first race was held in light 4-6 kts, with the second and third race in 8-10 kts with gusts kts. In the non-spin group, Hippo dominated with all firsts with Silver Fox second and Pocahontas third (with a second place in the third race). Ian and Judy had just launched Pocahontas, a Gloucester 22, Friday night after her long rest in their yard. (continued on page 4)
Page 4 JULY 2018 Spring PHRF Regatta (continued from page 3) In the spinnaker group there was some spirited racing, the high point being the start of the second race in which Arabella demonstrated her well developed match racing starting tactics locking up Hot Air and handily winning the start. After a close windward mark rounding Hot Air got their chute up quicker and kept the lead around the course. Racing is a team sport, especially with spinnakers going up and down on short windward leeward courses, and Team Hot Air proved superior in sets and douses. Team Rattlesnake, well a proven group of sailors had who not sailed together previously, as Arabella and Gary were helping to train Jim Engle and his crew (2018 Turkey Shoot winner) for their planned National Hospice Regatta appearance which will be raced in J-24s on Lake Ontario. Congratulations to Team Mihills, Brent, Ron and Rick, for winning the 2018 Typhoon Nationals, Championship Fleet, making this five times in a row! Congratulations to Stan Coloff and William DeCoste for winning the Corinthian Fleet division. The excitement for this biennial RRYC event began building several days before when Jim Key and Phil Ludwall arrived all the way from Michigan in time to sail in the last of our Wednesday night series. Three boats from Henderson Harbor New York arrived a couple of days later and lined up at John Friday s Custom Yacht Service. They were there to take advantage of John s discounted launch and retrieve package, which he kindly offers to race participants. The happy band then joined many others at the Ask the Experts panel featuring Ron Mihills, Arabella Denvir and Tom Linville for tips about sailing Typhoons in our local (continued on page 5)

A wonderful, fancy picnic followed, organized by Finlay Smith and hosted by Jerry Latell s Ullman Sails. Seventy people milled about on the porch, enjoying great conversation, food and drinks - including the traditional root beer floats. For a while on Saturday June 9 th, as twenty-six boats flopped about on the river waiting for a breath of wind in the mid morning heat, it looked as if no one was going anywhere! Fortunately, a breeze finally materialized and PRO Tom Linville was able to begin the first of four interesting races for the day. On Saturday, after club manager Kent White s signature delicious breakfast, the competitors were ready for anything! It served them well since once the wind did pick up it became a demanding day. PRO Linville devised four different courses designed to test skills as well as strategizing ability. That evening everyone was very ready to relax and enjoy the tasty food and good wine at the event dinner, masterfully organized by Leslie Damon. Another hearty Kent White breakfast set everyone up for Sunday s racing in the nice six to nine-knot breeze. It seemed that everyone was a little too keen to start! After two general recalls because too many boats were over early, PRO Linville resorted to the I flag. Two races followed before everyone repaired back to the clubhouse for the awards ceremony. A complete list of the results can be found on the RRYC website. Besides being the winners of the Championship Fleet, Ron Mihills also won the Alberg Trophy. Brad Perry won the Alberg Trophy for the Corinthian Fleet. The Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association donates this attractive trophy for the highest placed sailor in each fleet who is a member of CDSOA. With visiting sailors being welcomed into RRYC members homes; spaces found for all visiting boats; two days of professionally run races; great meals, and a number of RRYC member volunteers who have given of their time and talent for months prior to this event, everyone can be very proud of our club!!
Page 6 JULY 2018 Ty Fleet Honors Ron Mihills The RRYC Typhoon fleet honored Ron Mihills during the closing ceremonies of the 2018 Ty Nationals for his continuing efforts to build the Typhoon fleet and create the Nationals. His infectious enthusiasm and unwavering persistence brought an initial small group of Ty owners at RRYC to over sixty boats in the Northumberland, Middlesex, and Lancaster counties area. There are now three fleets in the tri counties who compete individually and collectively. The fifth biennial Ty Nationals attracted owners from as far away as New York and Michigan, with approximately thirty boats competing in Corinthian and Championship fleets. Not uncharacteristically, the Mihills boys won the championship trophy. Ron also created the Typhoon cheer which he leads at every opportunity. TYYYYYYY PHOOOON!! Mike Kennedy presents Ron Mihills the plaque for his efforts in leading and building the Ty fleet at RRYC.
JULY 2018 Page 7 Rendezvous RRYC Harborfest By Jack Chamberlain Jack and Jo Chamberlain, aboard their Cape Dory 33 Maggie Rose, represented RRYC for the fifth time June 9-11 th at the Yacht Club Rendezvous of the 41 st annual Norfolk Harborfest, which also celebrated the 100 th anniversary of the Norfolk Naval Base. Maggie Rose, the only RRYC vessel at the rendezvous, was among 50 boats rafted up in Freemason Harbor, including six from the Yankee Point Racing & Cruising Club. They almost had seven, but one had to turn back because of engine problems. We also had volunteered to lead the Harborfest cruise last year. No one signed up so we cancelled the voyage, breaking our fouryear run of Harborfests and two consecutive years of winning the Bloody Mary contest - that s mixing, not drinking! No one signed up this year, either, but we went anyway. I just had to recover my Bloody Mary title. Some RRYC sailors told us they don t like rafting up and can t stand the thought of an entire weekend without shore power. Note for next year: the Rendezvous will include a non-rafting option for those addicted to shore power. (continued on page 8)
Page 8 JULY 2018 Rendezvous (continued from page 7) The trip down was exciting the first day, with Northeast winds of kts and following seas of one to two feet, and more exciting the second day with winds of kts and seas of two to three feet, smacking Maggie Rose in the behind, leaving a zigzag trail in her wake. After anchoring in the East River off Mobjack Bay, we proceeded to one of our favorite spots, the Hampton Yacht Club, which has a great bar and restaurant. We dressed Maggie Rose with decorative signal flags, and then proceeded on Friday morning to meet the tall ships at buoy number 10 on the Elizabeth River. Maggie Rose was assigned to escort the Coast Guard s three-masted barque Eagle in the parade of (continued on page 9)
JULY 2018 Page 9 Rendezvous (continued from page 8) sails up the Elizabeth River to Norfolk s Town Point Park. Parade speeds varied from zero to more than six knots, and Maggie Rose struggled to keep up. But we never made it to the park where crowds had gathered to review the tall ships. For some reason unknown to us, Eagle abandoned the parade and was tugged into her berth. Other tall ships included the three-masted vessels BAP Union of Peru, Esmerala of Chile, Bae Guayas of Ecuador, El Galeon of Spain, a domestic three-masted ship Susan Constant. Several domestic two-masted vessels included the Schooner Virginia, American Rover, Bonny Rover, and Victory Rover. A U.S. Navy destroyer USS Bulkeley completed the list. Over the weekend I toured the Eagle, which was a prize of war from Germany after WW II. It is believed that Hitler once trod its decks, and maybe even spent a night aboard. I especially wanted to tour the El Galeon, which, of course, is a replica of a Spanish galleon of the 15 th and 16 th centuries. It looked so authentic - no paint, just natural wood turned dark with age. Beyond the rendezvous, the park was teeming with food, drinks and entertainment. What we found most fascinating and entertaining was, The Colours Junkanoo Street Party, a lively and colorful march through the park by 36 island musicians from Nassau, Bahamas. The men, dressed head to toe in multicolored costumes made mostly of feathers, and the girls, dressed in significantly fewer feathers, highstepped briskly while making loud and lively music from goatskins, cowbells, whistles, horns, conch shells, and steel drums made of 55-gallon oil drums. Other live entertainment included the U.S. Atlantic Fleet Forces Band, Travis Tritt, Sister Sledge, Brackish Water Jamboree Bluegrass band, and dozens of others from Latin to reggae. The Waterside market, which was abandoned by merchants and closed several years ago, has (continued on page 10)
Page 10 JULY 2018 Rendezvous (continued from page 9) reopened under city management in a new format of food and beverage stations specializing in oysters, gourmet sandwiches, beers, wines and mixed drinks. The place was packed and the noise deafening. The climax of the festival was the fireworks over the river for 30 or 40 minutes, and it was so grand and extensive that fireworks ashes and debris wound up on the deck of Maggie Rose. Messy. The rendezvous wound up on Sunday with a buffet breakfast and the Bloody Mary contest, which had five entries. They didn t announce the vote, but I came in second behind a woman who won last year, in my absence. I won t say the game was rigged, but while the other contestants sat passively, the winner had set herself up at the end of the buffet line and served her samples like tomato juice, soliciting votes. I hope things will be different next year. Besides a Bloody Mary contest with no thumbs on the scale, I hope a few RRYC sailors will join Maggie Rose. I need the votes! Typhoon Battle at RRYC Singlehanded Regatta By Tom Chapman Forecasts for thundershowers June 23rd, Saturday afternoon kept participation down to four racers; Tom Chapman (Hot Air), Bob Damon (Leilani), Gary Hooper (Grand Cru) and George Kuper (Ty Affair) were not deterred. PRO Mosby West and RC Team set up a twice around triangle course of a total of 2.7 miles with the wind coming out of the West at 8-12 kts at the 11:00 am start. As Bob Damon said at the awards presentation, I learned a lot about current today. The current prediction, based on astronomical data was for slack water at 11:00 am with a peak ebb current of.56kts at 1:50 pm. Gary Hooper won the start with Bob Damon close behind on starboard tack. Hot Air was 15 seconds late also on starboard. George Kuper, with the best strategy, crossed the line late on port tack heading west to catch the ebb from Carter s Creek. It was clear that George had correctly figured that with all the rain we have had the ebb would be stronger than the astronomical predictions and he was right. Grand Cru seeing Ty Affair heading west on port, tacked over no doubt thinking, good strategy. At the windward mark on the first lap, Hot Air (a J-24) rounded first and noted the current on the mark as well as a 30-degree veer and a drop in velocity to 5 kts. The course to the jibe mark was almost dead down wind. Ty Affair led the Tys at the windward mark and held the lead all the way to the windward mark on the second lap. Current at the windward mark on the second lap was likely close to 1 kt. In the dying wind all boats had to tack again at the mark to round it. (continued on page 11)
JULY 2018 Page 11 Typhoon Battle (continued from page 10) On the downwind reach, Ty Affair was overtaken by Grand Cru with better speed. As they rounded the jibe mark, with Grand Cru having built up a multi boat length lead, Kuper once again demonstrated his feel for the current and headed higher on the reach than Grand Cru who headed more directly for the pin. With the wind dying and the building current, the boats were within a boat length at the finish and having to tack to get to the line. Grand Cru held off Ty Affair for second place, with Ty Affair third. Bob Damon fighting the current in the middle of the second beat decided that the better part of valor was to DNF and fight another day. Hot Air finished first, due as much to being a faster boat that got around the course in stronger wind as much as any skill. Pro Mosby West and his RC of Debbie Cycotte, Coleman Brydon, Danielle Kuper (she was cheering George on at the finish), Ed Johnson, and Stu Polhamus were thanked by all at the awards presentation. Ed Johnson, PHRF Fleet Commander, provided excellent refreshments and awards amid discussion of how the current could have been so strong. Junior Training Week Reminder! 12 Page 12 JULY 2018 RRYC Juniors and Kayak Fleet Fun! On Sunday, June 24th some of our RRYC juniors and kayak fleet members joined forces for the club s 2 nd annual kayak and paddleboard across the Rappahannock River. The group of 10 paddleboard and kayakers started on the Topping side of the Norris Bridge and finished up at Willaby s just in time for brunch. Beautiful weather and accompanied by stingrays, it took the group about an hour to make the crossing. A special thank you goes out to Marine Police Officer Austin Brown, who navigating his impressive inflatable, did an excellent job of keeping us safe. We even witnessed him stop a boat after it blasted past the kayaks with no intent on slowing down, reminding us all that boat safety rules are there for a reason and to be enforced. 13 JULY 2018 Page 13 It Is Just a Shakedown Cruise to Reedville What Could Go Wrong? By Ken Vincent It all started out so well The boat passed the USCG Auxiliary Safety Inspection, and we left on time. Other boats were already underway, and we made good progress out the Rappahannock and up the bay toward Reedville. Having postponed this cruise twice, we chose to go anyway, knowing that the weather was iffy, and that heavy rain was expected. Oh, well, cruisers get rained on. We are used to it. We were in sight of Menabilly, and the sky started to rumble thunder storm coming, so we increased speed a bit to get in as soon as possible. Then we stopped moving. The engine was still running, but no forward motion. I checked all the usual things, and it appeared as a repeat of our 2016 shakedown cruise debacle (where we didn t even get out of the Corrotoman before the propulsion system croaked). We called TowBoatUS, and were told that no tow was available. We called back. Still no tow was available, so we accepted Menabilly s kind offer to tow us to Reedville. We got underway at 1.5 knots. Nobody was impressed, and the thunderstorm was still out there. I had read in the instruction manual for my Dinghy Tow system that you can propel your boat in the event it becomes necessary by lowering your dinghy into the water, still attached to the Dinghy Tow apparatus, and running your dinghy engine in reverse. So in I went, and fired it up. My dinghy s outboard now has more hours in reverse than in forward. It gave maybe, optimistically, 0.2 more knots. The instruction manual was obviously written for pushing a guppy, not a whale. But we were glad to take what we could get. The water was getting rough, with waves of about three feet, and I couldn t get out of the dinghy with the engine running, so I hung on for dear life (yes, I was wearing a PFD and glad of it). The XO was at the helm. It happened that due to our slow speed, Menabilly s chart plotter would not work, so the XO was feeding course corrections to Menabilly over the radio. Menabilly was becoming increasingly concerned with engine overheating. Did I mention that the water was getting rougher, and the thunderstorm nearer? Meanwhile a larger sailboat passed by, and asked if they could help. Menabilly had the situation well in hand, so we said thanks, but declined. They said that a small sailboat towing a larger sailboat, being pushed by a dinghy was the funniest thing we have seen on the bay! Go ahead, rub salt in the wound. About three and a half hours after starting the tow (about eight miles), we arrived at our intended anchorage off The Crazy Crab in Reedville, and dropped the hook and went to dinner with the other cruisers. (continued on page 14)
Page 14 JULY 2018 Shakedown Cruise to Reedville (continued from page 13) But wait, there s more! While we were eating dinner (which was very good), the storm arrived. Thunder, lightning, and heavy rain. As we finished, there was, what (falsely) appeared to be a lull in the rain. So we got in our dinghies and made a run for it, and got a good rinse-off amidst a spectacular light show on the way back to our boats. On Sunday the other boats headed home. We called TowBoatUS, and the local operator said to call him on Monday. On Monday, he said the sea state on the bay was still too rough for a safe tow. So we played Scrabble. We played Solitaire, we read books, etc. On Tuesday things had settled down, and we got our tow south to Regent Point. So, What Could Go Wrong? Well, actually, a LOT. Not only did the boat get a shakedown, so did my wallet! Ty Spring Series By Arabella Denvir Our Typhoon Spring series comprised a total of 14 races over five Wednesdays from May 2 nd until June 6 th and gave us some nice evenings with wind and waves. We started with seven boats on the first evening, building every week to fourteen on the last evening. The final Wednesday included some visiting racers who used it as a tune up for the Nationals. Hal Starke did a wonderful job of coordinating and arranging race committees for each evening, and the race officers comprised of Mosby West, Debbie Cycotte, Tom Linville, and Hal Starke working with most excellent teams of mark boat operators and race committee crew. ~ Ned Crockett kept the fleet informed and inspired by all his notices and s. ~ Stephanie Chaufournier did all the complex calculations of results. ~ The fleet thanks all of you! ~ Brent Mihills and Ron Mihills won the series, with six firsts and 16 points. ~ Second was Tom Chapman sailing with Ed Johnson, with three firsts and 35 points. ~ Just one point behind in third place was Gary Hooper and Tom Richardson with two firsts and 36 points. ~ Fourth were Mikey Kennedy and Tom Watkins with 45 points. Summer Fun in August! Come and Join us for some hot, summer fun on Saturday August 11th beginning at 6:30 pm at RRYC.
