RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER YACHT CLUB Irvington, VA DECEMBER 2018 The Headway RRYC: Annual Meeting 2018 By Tom Wicks The crowd had gathered and the Annual Meeting was called to order on November 17 th at 16:05 by Commodore Tom Chapman. After welcomes, he introduced Mike Kennedy who provided an overview of the plans for the new dock/marina. While estimates are preliminary at $300, ,000, the structure will be a fixed dock with fiberglass pilings and 32 slips, some larger than the present to accommodate members boats. Mike noted that the new construction would begin in the fall of 2019/winter After responding to members questions, Mike concluded and yielded the podium to 2018 treasurer Tom Richardson. Tom reported that the number of current memberships is 133, the checking balance is $47,153, and the current reserve is $146,508. He summarized some dock financing options and answered additional questions from the audience. Tom went on to offer the option of paying the annual dues in monthly payments instead of the lump sum. This will be voted upon at the December Board Meeting on Dec.8. (continued on page 5)

Officers and Directors: The 2019 Officers and Directors were elected at our well-attended meeting. Your board is grateful for the membership s confidence and support. Officers for 2019 are Tom Chapman, Commodore; Daniele Kuper, Vice Commodore; Ed Peake, Rear Commodore; Art Gilbert, Treasurer; Candace Franco, Secretary. Directors are Ken Vincent, Jen Resio, Martha Little, Ian Ormesher, Brad Perry and Ann Vaden. We welcome Art, Ian, Brad and Ann to the board. Thanks to outgoing Treasurer Tom Richardson and Directors Dave Bronson, Mike Kennedy and Ted Kvell for their dedication and valuable service to RRYC. DIRECTORS Past Commodore Tom Decker (C) decker@kaballero.com Director - Martha Little (804) mlittle2814@gmail.com Director - Brad Perry skywatchers@cox.net Director - Ian Ormesher ian.ormesher@cox.net Director - Jennifer Resio (540) , resiomob@gmail.com Director - Ann Vaden annvaden@gmail.com As reported by Tom Richardson, RRYC is in good financial shape as we face the challenge of our Dock Replacement project. Membership is healthy but more members are both welcome and encouraged. A few new events of 2018 are noteworthy; Martha Little s Rockin on the River, the Branflick s Rappa Days Cardboard Boat regatta and Arabella and Ian s Dinghy Regatta. Also noteworthy was change to using club china reducing the club s plastic waste. For 2019, I look forward to increased participation and volunteering by all members in club activities both on and off the water. A club is only as good as the participation of the membership. Don t miss the Christmas Music and sing along program by members Brad and Joan Perry (aka Alabaster Grace) at the December 8 th Social. Make your reservations today. Director - Ken Vincent (540) kenvincent@nnwifi.com Club Manager - Kent White
DECEMBER 2018 Page 3 From the Vice Commodore By Danielle Kuper The weather was not always kind to us this year, but still a lot of sailing went on at RRYC! None of the racing events could happen without all those members who volunteered on the race committees. Thirty-six RRYC members and some non-member friends volunteered at least once. Our heartfelt thanks to: Coleman Brydon, Pete Clay, Roy Combs, Ned Crockett, Stan Crockett, Art Gilbert, Ed Johnson, Mikey Kennedy, Danielle Kuper, Tom Linville, Ron Mihills, Marshall Orr, Hal Starke, Margo van Kaneal, Chris Volk, Sam van Saun, Mike Miller, Finlay Smith, Scott Vail, Ron Jenkins, Lance Franke, Stephanie Chaufournier, Jesse Swartz, Arabella Denvir, Sissy Crowther, Missy Bozarth. These intrepid RRYC members volunteered three or more times: Tom Blencowe Debbie Cycotte Fred Pevahouse Randy Romaine Lloyd Redlin Moseby West Cynthia Volk Stu Polhamus George Kuper Steve Harris Race Committee duty is a great way to spend time on the water with friends, especially for new members. No experience is required! Please let me, Moseby West or Ed Johnson know if you are interested. This year we introduced a new Dinghy Race where people could race their smaller, non-keel boat dinghies. People of all ages came out to have fun. Thanks to Arabella Denvir and Ian Ormesher for organizing that. We plan to do it again! The annual Women s Clinic and Community Sailing Day were well attended. Thanks to Stephanie Chaufournier, and Greg and Sue Kirkbride for organizing those events. We had some PHRF racing, including a new race just for J24 s. Unfortunately, the Rappahannock Cup was cancelled again this year first due to both bad weather, and then because of difficulty in rounding up participants from the two clubs, especially Yankee Point. This is the second year that the Rapp Cup has been cancelled. We are going to give it another try next year because this is the one race where strategies change because participants race as a club, and not as individuals. Ed Johnson has agreed to be PHRF Fleet Commander again next year, but he is going to need more commitment from the PHRF racers to support these events. The cruisers had some great adventures together. Cruising Fleet Commander Ken Vincent did an excellent job of describing the details in his Headway articles. Thank you Ken! Cheryl Wicks has agreed to be next year s Cruising Fleet Commander. On Junior Rappa Days during the summer, this club was just buzzing with youngsters! Thanks to Louise and Jeff Branflick for organizing these events. Unfortunately, the Junior Regatta organized by Jen Resio and Sam Van Saun had to be cancelled due to storms. Since both these ladies will be out of town next year, I am looking for a volunteer to run the Junior Regatta. The weather also played havoc with the Kayak Fleet although Sandy and Peter Porteous planned several events. Thanks Sandy and Peter! Sandy will be Kayak Fleet Commander again next year. Rather than setting up events, Sandy will facilitate communication between kayakers. Hopefully, this should allow for more spontaneous kayaking get-togethers. (continued on page 4)
Page 4 From the Vice Commodore (continued from page 3) DECEMBER 2018 Our newest fleet, the Duffy Fleet ably led by Mary Carol Taylor, had yet another fun raft up party. As usual, there was tremendous participation in the Typhoon Fleet. To calculate the Typhoon Sailor of the Year award, we had to take into account thirty-six individual races! This was also a Typhoon Nationals year, and we attracted sailors from as far away as Michigan and New York for a well attended, fun time. Thanks to outgoing Ty Fleet Commander Arabella Denvir. Bob Damon has agreed to take up the mantle for next year. From the Rear Commodore By Ed Peake RRYC Dock Replacement Project-Slip Reservations Our current plans are to replace our existing dock during the Fall-Winter The design of the dock will be a fixed dock with fiberglass pilings and wider slips for the larger boats. The fiberglass pilings will solve the year dock life issue, and the wider slips are required as many of our members larger boats do not fit in our current slips. We currently have 32 slips, one of which is not usable due to shallow water and small size. Of the useable 31 slips, 2 are used for Club boats leaving 29 for rental. Currently all but three are rented, one skiff slip and two B slips. With the planned wider slips, to maintain our slip numbers at our current 32, we will have to go out another 54 feet from our current dock footprint. We are applying for a permit on this basis. We know that if we stay within the footprint of our existing dock we will not have any permit problems. Going the additional 54 feet might create approval problems. We will be able to accommodate all current slip holders within our current footprint, but for additional slip holders the extended area is required. In order to fully understand our club demand for slips we are asking you to make a commitment for a slip in the replaced dock. This commitment is simply a statement of your desire to have a slip at the future dock. All slips on the new dock will be on a first come, first served basis with existing slip holders having preference. So, if you desire a slip after the dock replacement please send the following information to Ed Peake or Kent White by December 12, Name: Boat Name: Boat Length (LOA): Thank you for your cooperation. Boat Beam: Boat Draft: Submitting Items to The Headway All items for publication should be submitted via to rrycheadwayeditors@gmail.com no later than the 20 th of the prior month (i.e. by December 20 th for January publication). For consistency s sake, whenever boat names are included, please italicize them only (not in all caps, not in quotation marks). Please provide photographer name with any photos submitted. For quality, photos should be jpeg files not inserted in a word file. Spell out numbers under 10 or that begin sentences. Use a 24-hour clock for all times (e.g., 16:00, not 4:00 P.M.). Articles should be limited to no more than 1,200 words, or alternately split into multiple parts with a 1,200 word limit per part, to run in contiguous issues of The Headway.
DECEMBER 2018 Page 5 Annual Meeting 2018 (continued from page 1) The podium was then offered to Vice-Commodore Danielle Kuper who announced the awards for the past year. See her report within this edition of The Headway additional details. Rear Commodore Ed Peake then summarized the capital projects completed in 2018 (new stove, refrigerator, HVAC unit and preliminary engineering/ design on the new dock), and expressed appreciation again for the work done by the Beavers in He thanked the Social Committee for all their efforts in preparing delicious meals as part of the club socials in He noted that Jim and Pam Ward would be stepping down as Directors of the Social Committee, and urged any members with a fondness for cooking who would enjoy working with a great bunch of fellow members on the Social Committee in 2019 to contact him. Ed also thanked Kent and Diane for their hard work and contributions to RRYC. Commodore Tom Chapman then took the podium to conduct further business. When asked, the Club Secretary Candace Franco confirmed that the required quorum of active members had signed in and were in attendance (including proxies mailed in), and that the election of new officers and Board members could be completed. After calling for any further nominations from the floor and hearing none, Tom affirmed that the election was complete and that the new officers were Commodore Tom Chapman, Vice- Commodore Danielle Kuper, Rear-Commodore Ed Peake, Treasurer Art Gilbert, and Secretary Candace Franco, each for a one-year term. New Board members are: Ian Ormesher, Brad Perry and Ann Vaden. They will replace out-going Board Members Mikey Kennedy, Ted Kvell and Dave Bronson, with Art Gilbert replacing outgoing Treasurer Tom Richardson. Their terms become effective on Dec. 1. Jen Resio, Martha Little and Ken Vincent will continue for the remainder of their two-year term on the BOD. The Annual Meeting was adjourned and the Social part of the event commenced. From left front row: Candace Franco, Danielle Kuper, Jen Resio, Ann Vaden, Brad Perry. Back Row from left: Ed Peake, Tom Chapman, Art Gilbert, Ian Ormesher and Ken Vincent (Martha Little, absent).
