As always in the Rapp Cup the competition was close as each club has to count two spinnaker boats and three non-spinnaker boats. After two days of racing in light to moderate winds RRYC prevailed over YPRCC 47 to 50. Thirteen boats competed in the Cup regatta the best turnout in years. Competing for RRYC in the spinnaker class were Tommy Asch s Moya, Hal Starke and Sam Marshall s Play It Again team and Doug Lyle on his Catalina 22. In the Non-Spinnaker class RRYC competitors were Tom Chapman s Hot Air, Pete Knight s Salute, Stu Polhamus s Equinox and Pete Winter s Sea Wind. YPRCC fielded their best light air racing group led by Warren Ryan s Whistler, the 2015 Turkey Shoot overall winner. (continued on page 3)

A large crowd enjoyed a first ever Motown night with Jerry Wachter as the RRYC official DJ. The cruisers Northern venture was delayed due to tropical storm Hermione, and the forecast of strong winds following the storm forced a change from a trip north to southern destinations. Eight boats enjoyed stops at several yacht clubs in the Norfolk area. The Typhoons have started their fall racing season. In the annual Rappahannock Cup competition, the racers returned the Cup back from Yankee Point Yacht Club. Kudos to Tom Chapman and the racers for their hard work on this event, and congratulations to all who participated. The September social, featuring an entrée of duck breasts, was well attended. Our new members are enjoying the Socials as well as the First Friday get-togethers. Remember that the October First Friday will be held on September 30 to coincide with the kick off of the Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta which we are co-sponsoring. Volunteers are always welcome. We are expecting over one hundred boats to compete. Although we have reached our membership goals for this year s budget thanks to the efforts of all our members, let s continue to introduce the club to our neighbors and friends. The prosperity of RRYC depends on adding new members and keeping those on our rosters active and involved. From the Rear Commodore By Ed Peake, Rear Commodore By now everyone should have gotten the notice that the pool was being closed for the season on the September 24. The Beavers will be doing the winterizing and installing the pool cover. Where did the summer go? Well, the pool might be closed but there is still plenty of good boating left in this season, whether it be Racing, Cruising, Kayaking or just for pleasure. The fall is a great time to be out on the water with cooler temperatures so get out and enjoy the water or you can come to the club and sit on the deck with your cocktails grill out and watch the sunset. Enjoy!

4 Page 4 October 2016 Cruise News: October 2016 By Tom Wicks Cruising Fleet Commander Voyage of Ariel Ariel arrived in Gibraltar on Sept. 6th, ( they speak English there with a nice accent ). After a short stay at the Ocean Village Marina on the Bay near the airport, they continued on into the Med and as of Sept 18, were sailing at 6.5 kts to Calpe, Spain, near Valencia, where some family live nearby. This is likely to be the resting spot for the boat for the winter. Sue will fly home from there while Charles stays on a bit to catch up with some maintenance and winterization. Sue admits that their blog is not current but hopes that with internet cafes nearby, she will be able to update it. cnspringett@gmail.com suckspringett@gmail.com suespringett@verizon.net Recent Cruising Fleet Activity While the cruise to the Pax River was canceled due to Hermine, some sailors joined Joe Sarnowski and Polly Cox inside for the annual Labor Day party on Sat. Sept 3rd. The music, food, drinks and company were all great and even the storm abated somewhat, with only light rain, which ended early. But then, the SoB (Southern Bay) cruise was born, with eight boats leaving Tues. AM for favorite spots in the Bottom of the Bay (YRYH, HYC, NYCC) and the Top of the Ditch, e.g., Mile Marker Zero and the Tidewater Portsmouth, with a return home via Cape Charles. See story within. Upcoming Cruise Join us on the last club cruise of the season, sailing north to visit the rivers on the west side, starting after the Turkey Shoot and returning by the 15th. After missing this earlier, we hope to dine at Vera s on St. Leonard s off the PAX and enjoy a number of other fine spots. See the Cruise Guide, available shortly. 5 October 2016 Motown Classic Night - August 27th By Jerry Wachter Page 5 What a great time! Sorry, some of you couldn t make it. We had great music, lots of horsd oeuvres and plenty of dancing. The event committee, Stepkos, Kirkbrides, DeCostes, Perrys, Julians, Wachters, Mikey & Roy Kime helped with the setup and then turned on the music. It was still a little warm but it didn t make any difference once you put on your dancing shoes. We shimmied, shaked, bukalooed, mashed potatoes, did the James Brown and an assortment of wild and crazy dance moves until 10:00. The clubhouse wooden floor is perfect for moving feet. This might need to become an annual event.

6 Page 6 October 2016 The Winter Getaway Continued -- By Carl Isbrandtsen What would a cruise to the Exumas be without a stop in Georgetown, where hundreds of cruisers spend months at a time on the hook? We head out through Galliot Cut into Exuma Sound and then sail SE to the Georgetown area. The wind is blowing only kts., so the beam reach is easy. Out goes my fishing line dragging my red cedar plug, which I m told is just the thing for Wahoo and Tuna in feet of water in the Sound, so I m ready for whatever s out there. An hour later we haul in a fish, but alas, it s just an ugly Barracuda. A couple of hours later I get another strike. My line is pulled off the reel fast as Debi heads into the wind to slow the boat speed, which will help me bring this monster in. Drat! My line goes slack, and when I reel it in I see that my $25.00 red cedar plug is nowhere to be found. Whatever it was ate my plug, the leader and the swivels. The run to Georgetown is about 35 miles. We approach the entrance to Elizabeth Harbour (bounded to the N by Stocking Island and to the S by Great Exuma Island including Georgetown) with caution, as we must follow and connect a series of way points to make it in safely, avoiding shallows and reefs. At about 1500 we drop our hook amongst about 200+ other cruisers. I m pretty sure that this is not going to be my favorite place, but I can guarantee that Debi will make lots of new friends, and when she s happy, I m happy. We drop our dinghy and head ashore to Chat and Chill, a beach bar/restaurant/ beach volleyball/cruisers hangout mainstay on Stocking Island, where we meet up with our cruiser friends on Finley and toast our arrival with Sands beer, followed by Hog Snapper, peas and rice and salad. We dinghy home before dark and we re sawing logs by 19:30. Morning arrives and the Admiral tells me it s shopping day; not my favorite activity, but it s important to have provisions, and Georgetown is the place to get them. We dinghy a couple of miles across the Elizabeth Harbour, under a small bridge and into Lake Victoria, a smallish lake with a big dinghy dock for the many cruisers. We head up the dock s ramp onto the street that encircles Lake Victoria. Our first stop is Exuma Market and it s a gold mine of produce and fresh foods. We spend an hour or so filling 4 recyclable grocery bags and then I go in search of a watch band pin for my super special Wal-Mart Casio watch. Bingo, in Top II Bottom, a small marine store, I find just what I need. Debi hits the liquor store for more wine and we re ready to head back home to River Rat with our booty. It s the first day of the Exuma National Cruisers Regatta week, so there are all sorts of activities for cruisers and locals alike. Everyone s gathering on Volley Ball Beach in front of Chat and Chill to meet and greet, eat, sip some cold ones and register for everything from sailboat races to volleyball and Bocce Ball tournaments. This afternoon, the developers of Active Captain give a first aid presentation on the beach. We connect with old and make some new friends and then make our way back to River Rat just before dark. At 08:45 the next day Debi s off in the dinghy for Yoga on the beach. I fill River Rat s fuel tank with (continued on page 7)

7 October 2016 The Winter Getaway (continued from page 6) Page 7 the Gerry jugs of diesel I keep on deck. I can carry about 1/4th of our boat s fuel capacity in these jugs, and I find it much easier to top off by using them, rather than taking the boat to a fuel dock. I can then throw the empty jugs in the dinghy and take them to a fuel dock to refill. I have a super siphon hose thing that allows me to easily empty each jug into a very fine filter, so the fuel is clean as it enters the tanks. Once Debi returns, we cross the harbor with our computers and beach chairs. First, we stop and split a $10 burger and beer at a restaurant called Red Boone, which also has free internet. We pay our bills electronically and catch up on s, etc. Next, we re off to the Cruisers Regatta variety show to be held in town at Regatta Park, a show put on by the Georgetown community and cruisers. There s dancing and singing, and local primary school kids show off dance routines. There are men s and women s tug of wars, cabaret and folk singers, high school bands and food booths serving hot dogs, hamburgers, conch fritters, beer and all sorts of rum drinks. As the show winds down we board our dinghy and make our way back to River Rat at about 16:00 for some R&R. The next morning after coffee we head ashore to hike across Stocking Island. There s a trail there that splits, allowing us to walk the Sound side coast N and S. We hike both, taking pictures from the top of the island of the boats in Elizabeth Harbour and the rocks and crashing waves on the Sound side. Today is Pig Roast Day at Chat and Chill, so at noon we head in with Kendra and Jeff to get our tickets. $22 gets you roast pig, mac and cheese, peas and rice and cole slaw. Soon the beach is packed. Along with many others, we overindulge, so back to our boat we go to watch a spectacular sunset before an early bedtime. We re up and in town by 09:00 the next day with Ron, Vicky, Jeff and Kendra to pick up our rental van to explore Great and Little Exuma Islands by land. First we drive N to Prime Meats and stock up on fish, steaks, sausage, lobster tails, cheeses and other good stuff. Then its S to Darville Lumber for marine supplies and to the first of many liquor stores to buy rum and wine. By noon we re headed way S on Little Exuma Island for lunch at Santanna s Bar & Grill for fresh lobster lunch (of course served with peas and rice, mac and cheese and cole slaw). We sit by the water under an umbrella and enjoy our feast. Then, we head next door to buy some of Mom s rum cake and take pictures with her. She s been selling her cakes and dispensing free hugs to locals and cruisers alike for many, many years and is now 86 and still hugging! Back in the car we head N toward Georgetown, stopping occasionally at local liquor stores to pick up cold Kalik beers. It s now March 1, and we ve decided to take our leave from our new and not so new buddies. We head northwesterly about 48 nm across Exuma Sound toward Cat Island. This is Debi s call, to split from the safety of our cruising buddies in the Exumas and head across open seas to an unknown destination, but I m up for it. Our loose plan is to spend a few days in several anchorages around this unspoiled island while the winds are light and then sail W from the northern tip of Cat Island to Little San Salvador for a night and then to Eleuthera. The water we traverse is 4,000-5,000+ feet deep, but after we approach our first (continued on page 8)

8 Page 8 October 2016 The Winter Getaway (continued from page 7) TY News By Ned Crockett waypoint (Hawks Nest Point), the depth changes dramatically in a 1/8th mile distance to 16 feet. As we arrive in the Bight, we see 4 or 5 vessels peacefully anchored. One is Ti Amo (friends Glenda and Greg), home-ported at Regent Point in Middlesex County. The 80 degree water here is crystal clear as we drop the hook. When I jump overboard with my mask and snorkel to check our anchor set, I can see that the anchor s dug in deep from 50 feet away. Our adventure continues, so if you can stand it, there s more to come next month. The Typhoon Fall Series began August 24th. To date we have had eight individual races with one Wednesday canceled because of threatening weather. Eleven Typhoons have raced. Our last Series race is scheduled for September 28th, the Wednesday before the Hospice Turkey Shoot. We have invited the Piankatank River Typhoon Fleet to come race with us and stay for the Turkey Shoot. On Wednesday, September 14th, Typhoon racers and race committee were invited to dinner at RRYC following racing. Tom Watkins provided the main course and dessert while others brought appetizers. George Kuper tended bar while all enjoyed gathering and swapping sailing stories. As of September 15, seventy-seven racers have registered for the Turkey Shoot. Of those, fourteen are Typhoons. The numbers are growing almost daily and we are hoping for twenty Typhoons racing. Although our Fall Series ends the end of September, the month of October offers more Typhoon racing opportunities. A fun event offered by YPRCC is their annual Single-Handed race to be held October 8th. That is followed by the Commodore s Cup October 22nd. Our annual Fall Awards and Dinner event will take place October 19th. That is always well attended and much fun. 9 October 2016 From the Galley By Craig Akers Page 9 The fourth annual Men in the Galley dinner was another YUGE success. Thanks to Marsha & Tom Chapman, Ene-Mai & Ted Kvell, Kathy Hegler & Ed Peake, Kelly & Pete Winters, and the Jane & Harry Wells for the wonderful appetizers. They were so delectable that the dinner had a hard act to follow, but the crew of Dick Franco, Carl Isbrandtsen, Greg Kirkbride, and Jim Ward met the challenge by spending the morning putting together an awesome meal of seared duck breast with a cherry and port wine reduction that was to die for. The duck was served with seasoned wild rice, roasted root vegetables, an tossed garden salad. And on top of that, some thought the dessert of ice cream Brandy Alexanders were the best part of the meal. Lots of members made comments about how much they enjoyed the meal; best yet!, I don t do dessert, but I ate all of mine, etc., so many, many kudosto the galley crew. As Tony the Tiger would say, you guys are GRREEEAAAAT!!! While it was a relatively small crowd of 44 members and guests, the weather was delightful, so cocktails and dinner were enjoyed on the porch overlooking a gorgeous sunset on Carter Creek, and the cool dessert was perfect for the weather. In addition to the kitchen crew, Ed Peake and Harry Wells joined Greg Kirkbride on the serving line to fill plates, and several members who were not on the Social Committee pitched in and helped with the cleanup; THANKS to you all as well! Then everyone sat around and shared in the wonderful camaraderie that makes RRYC such a fantastic place. Come out next month and enjoy an Oktoberfest feast of sauerbraten, German potato salad, sautéed kale with garlic, shallots, and capers, and a fruit and hazelnut küchen with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Make your dinner reservations by sending an to dinner@rryc.org.. The deadline for reservations is 06:00 on Monday, October 10. We look forward to seeing you there.
