RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER YACHT CLUB IRVINGTON, VA October 2015 THE HEADWAY Cruise to Indian Creek By Cheryl and Tom Wicks Cruisers in four sailboats embarked in the anticipated July heat to sail on a mini-cruise to Indian Creek and anchor outside the Boat Basin and in Pittman s Cove inside lovely Indian Creek on Saturday, July 25. Participants included Bob and Jane Bierly on C mon Wind, David Hutchison on Menabilly, Joe and Beverly Oren on Bon Vivant, and Sve and Sheila Zukor on Wetted Bliss. Also already living on the creek with their sloop Eminence at the dock, were cruise leaders Tom and Cheryl Wicks. After a warm cruise to the creek with either light winds or wind on the nose, the sailors anchored and took a little time to relax or explore the many fingers of the creek by dinghy. By 16:00, they were ready for a dip in the Wicks pool and some libations. Former members of the RRYC, circumnavigators themselves, now neighbors to Wicks Ward and Judy LeHardy stopped by for cocktails and reminiscing. Indian Creek still has a working grain transfer station supported by the regular arrival and departure of barges although it was quiet that weekend as an empty barge had been delivered on Thursday. On what is now known as Waverly Wharf, there had once been a fish processing plant. It was also where theadam s Floating Theatre use to tie up. The theatre sat 500 people and was the inspiration for (continued on page 4)

Should you have suggestions please contact your Board. Final approval and implementation will occur at the October Board meeting. As the end of the year approaches, I wanted to remind everyone that the annual meeting will be on November 14, 2015, commencing at 1600 hours. The slate of proposed Officers and Directors will be officially nominated and, with your approval, selected to run the club for the forthcoming year. When the time comes, please get your proxy, if necessary, to Nancy Friday our Secretary. Fair winds, Pete From the Rear By Tom Decker, Rear Commodore Many members have noticed the new shed that has arrived at RRYC. It s a direct replacement for the metal shed that housed the lawn mower, fuel for the boats, and outboard motors for the dinghies. The old metal shed had seen its last days as screws would no longer hold the rust together. Because the new shed will also house the sails, rudders m and masts for the junior sailors, half the cost is being funded from the junior sailors budget. The junior sailors now have a separate space for storing their equipment and no longer have to worry about accidentally puncturing the new HVAC ducting in the Annex when storing their masts and sails. Hank Little, former Commodore, recently donated a table saw and a free standing drill press. These tools are located in the Annex for club members use. These items will make short work of many tasks that keep RRYC running and will be useful in maintaining the junior sailors equipment. Sail Away Quotes Life provides the Wind. You control the direction of the Sail.

October 2015 Report From The Treasurer Steve Harris, Treasurer Page 3 If you follow the RRYC Treasurer s Reports I post each month (on Member Connect and on the clubhouse bulletin board), you know that the club is doing well from an overall income and expense standpoint this year. However, I wanted to make members aware of an issue that has developed, which will require some changes to our current cash management practices before the end of the year. Based on a recommendation from the Long Range Planning Committee ( LRPC ), in October 2014 the Board approved a set of Financial Policies related to the club s various funds, consisting of an operating fund, a capital fund and a reserve fund. The policy requires, ingtern alia, a minimum of $50,000 be retained in the reserve fund for extraordinary purposes. Further, various items of income or cash flow are to be directed to the reserve fund, including net proceeds from dock and clubhouse rentals, initiation fees, and operating surplus at year-end. These policies were put in place effective January 1, In prior years - before these policies were adopted - the reserve fund was funded principally with cash flow attributable to depreciation. We continued that policy in the start of 2015, in addition to the dock income and initiation fees. As a result, the reserve fund has grown substantially, from an initial balance on January 1 of $46,465 (less than the $50,000 minimum) to $78,109 as of July 31. Including depreciation in the calculation of the transfer amount boosted the reserve fund by $11,006 through July, beyond the minimum associated with the LRPC recommendation. We in essence over-deposited to the reserve fund. Funds for the reserve fund are transferred from our separate operating account to the reserve fund account. While the transfer of additional cash associated with depreciation has had a positive impact on the reserve fund, it has drawn down our operating fund balance significantly. As we approach year-end, it s important to not only fund the reserve fund to the greatest extent possible, but also to maintain sufficient cash in our operating account to pay our bills. Prudent cash management is a part of the Treasurer s charge. So, to ensure we have sufficient cash in our operating account, I will be freezing transfers from operating to the reserve fund until the end of the year. At that time, we can determine the amount that can be transferred into the reserve fund, consistent to the greatest extent possible with existing policy. The Treasurer and the Board then can and should review the policy to see if any tweaks are required. Typhoons Tom Watkins, Typhoon Fleet Commander The Typhoons fall racing series concluded on September 30 after a very successful 6-week season with many spirited Wednesday afternoon races followed by spectacular sunsets. As the season ended, most Typhoon skippers moved right on into preparation for the Turkey Shoot, hosted by RRYC, on October 3 and 4. In a field of about 100 boats for the Turkey Shoot, 21 Typhoons registered to race. To celebrate the fall season, we invite all Typhoon skippers, crew and spouses to join us on Wednesday, October 21stat 6:00 p.m. for the fall awards event. We will serve heavy hors d heourves and drinks for $25 per person and we will present trophies and awards for the fall series. Since we need to give the caterer a head count, please contact Harry Wells at hwells37@gmail.comto sign up (before October 16, please) if you plan to attend. Thanks to all skippers, crew, PROs, race committee volunteers, social and publicity chairmen and RRYC for support and encouragement during this beautiful autumn of Typhoon racing.

Page 4 October 2015 Spring Cruise (continued from page 1) the book and movie Showboat. Adjacent to this area is now the Boys Camp, which is also the site of a Kilmarnock mystery regarding a four-story wooden castle built on that property by Captain Hackney in the early 1900 s. Cheryl entertained the group by showing pictures of the local Castle built by Capt. Hackney on what is now the Boys Camp and sharing what research has revealed regarding the mystery of what happened to the Hackneys and the castle, now dismantled, but living on in the names Castle Lane and the Castle Cove Association, our community there. Cheryl can provide the details upon request (cawicks@aol.com). Tom fired up the grill and cooked meat brought for dinner ranging from hamburgers, turkey burgers, steak, and even bison sausage. Appetizers, sides, and desserts were provided. Conversation lingered well past dark before the cruisers reclaimed their dinghies and returned to their boats for the evening. After a quiet night, the cruisers departed, either returning to their homeports or on to others (eg., Onancock and Cockrell Creek) for an extra night or two on the water, this time with fair and brisk breezes. RRYC Cruise to Southern Shores/Duck, NC: 8/15/2015 to 8/23/2015 On August 15 the Asches, Germans, and Latell s plus kids braved the high winds and channel traffic to head to OBX. While each family had their own accommodations, fun times were spent together. We had a Sunday Night Cruise/ Birthday Party at the Asches for everyone who had a birthday in the last 30 days. Dinner was a seafood extravagance: shrimp, clams, crabs, and ahi tuna all prepared by Captain Tom. Drinks were prepared by Bob German with a heavy pour. And Brenda and Andrea were in charge of kids (oh dear...no one drowned or was lost in the boiling pot {aka HOT TUB}). On Wednesday, we went to the Latell s for a short happy hour but with great food and drinks and the pleasure of Andrea s parents. The final day before all cruised back (but us) we were back at the Asches for a fond farewell and Bob was trying to catch dinner. Great time had by all.

October 2015 The Hotter Than Hell Hundred Cruise Report RRYC Fall Cruise to the Choptank River By Coleman Brydon (continued on page 6) Page 5 False advertising! Neither the temperature, nor the humidity, nor total distance covered reached one hundred. The third week of August featured moderate temperatures and humidity, as well as steady breezes, and no late afternoon thunderstorms. The week offered sailors near perfect conditions. Wetted Bliss (Zukor) and Bon Vivant (Oren) joined Starview (Bober) Saturday evening at Tabbs Creek for a fine social hour after an uncomfortable slog heading north, with winds over twenty knots (from the north) and lumpy seas at Windmill Point Light. The Sunday leg from Tabbs Creek to Onancock was a quick romp with favorable 10 to 15 knot winds and pleasant weather. A word about Onancock, it could not have been a better spot to spend some time. While the original plan called for going to Crisfield from Onancock, the mostly northerly breezes coupled with local reports about conditions at Crisfield caused a change in the itinerary. Crisfield was eliminated and extra time was spent in Onancock, which worked out well in the face of threatening weather. With the northern winds, there was some consideration of heading south, perhaps towards Havana. This consideration was halted by the discovery of the Cuban sandwich at Janet s General Store Café. The Irish pub still serves a meal worth the walk from the harbor. Onancock was a treat, no cooking aboard. On Wednesday, the small craft warnings were lifted at Departing Onancock Creek at 1000 resulted in a spirited sail (under single reefed main and yankee on Starview) to the upper portion of Dividing Creek. Are there more Dividing Creeks than Mill Creeks on the Chesapeake? After a peaceful night at anchor in Dividing Creek it was time to head for home. This cruise was regarded by those participating as perhaps the finest RRYC cruise in recent memory although the Hotter Than Hell Hundred will probably be best remembered as the forgotten cruise. Full details will be forwarded to the Club s Historian. Twenty-two cruisers participated in the RRYC Fall Cruise to the Choptank River and other destinations. Not all twenty-two did the whole trip, but as some departed others joined so that we had good groups at all destinations. The participants were: Bob and Jane Bierly on C mon Wind, Coleman and Terry Brydon on Inspiration, Bob and Eve German ( with children) on Pegasus, Carl and Debbi Isbrandtsen on River Rat, Ted and Ene-Mai Kvell on Bottlenose, Frank and Grace Ann Miller on Windblown, Joe and Bev Oren on Bon Vivant, Darryl and Jen Resio (with Children and Darryl s mother, Harriet) on Delphinus, Mike and Polli Romey on Chinoook, Ken and Kay Vincent on Autumn Wind, Tom and Cheryl Wicks on Eminence. The traditional starting point of the fall cruise is Joe Sarnowski s Labor Day Picnic. It is possible that many of the newer members of our club are unaware of what a great event this is. The club provides beverages, cruisers and other guests bring a meat to cook and a side dish to share. Joe provides his wonderful Dymer Creek venue and a band for entertainment - the locally famous Lumpfish Daddy and the Backfin Boys. This is the TWENTY-FIRST YEAR that this event has taken place. The weather this year was perfect (thank you, Carole) and Inspiration, River Rat, Bon Vivant, Windblown, C mon Wind, Delphinus, and Pegasus looked great anchored in the creek. The winds had been strong all day, providing good sailing for most of the trip. After good food, drink, dancing, and company, cruisers retired to their boats. Next morning we were treated to a Sunday paper and doughnuts delivered to their boats by the second generation Sarnowski Doughnut Boys. The original doughnut boy is now the dad and his children have taken up the role. This act of kindness is greatly appreciated by all cruisers. Thank you, Joe.

Page 6 October 2015 Robert Morris Inn in Oxford (continued on page 7) Cruise to Choptank River (continued from page 5) Sunday the group departed for Reedville, but encountering strong northerly winds opted for Indian Creek instead. This is the beauty of cruising. Your goal is to visit places on this wonderful Chesapeake Bay not seen by 99.9% of the population. If one isn t convenient, you pick another one. Delphinus and Pegasus departed for home, Eminence joined the group, and after a quiet day, the group met for cocktails in the ICYCC dock gazebo. Monday, Labor Day, the group departed early for the long trek to Solomon s Island Yacht Club. Despite some engine overheating and faulty auto pilot issues, all boats made the fifty mile slog in good order, arriving in time for the delicious SIYC Labor Day Picnic - hamburgers, Italian sausage, lots of side dishes, not to mention the fresh strawberries and ice cream for dessert. The club closed early, but Frank Miller smooth-talked the manager of Solomon s Pier restaurant across the street into letting us watch the VA Tech/OSU game after she closed. (It didn t help Tech.) Tuesday, we took a lay day, using the time to fix engines and work on auto pilots. We were joined by Bottlenose. We had dinner at local restaurants, then sat around and sang old songs in front of the yacht club. The weather continued to be good. Wednesday, we departed for Tred Avon Yacht Club, Oxford, MD. This was our best sailing day. Most of the thirty one mile trip was a broad reach with winds that started off light and built. River Rat deployed their big, beautiful spinnaker and made a leisurely progress up the bay. At Tred Avon Yacht Club, we were given a warm welcome by Sandy King, Fleet Captain, and attended a roast beef dinner. Sandy also brought newspapers and fresh bagels the next morning for each boat. Frank Miller, the first to arrive, offended the instead. Winds were strong from the North when we left Oxford, but gradually died out during the trip, only to pick up again as we entered the Cambridge Yacht Club docks.. This created a strong cross wind situation that made docking difficult. All made it safely. We were joined by Autumn Wind and Chinook who had to catch up due to late starts. Dinner was at the Cambridge Yacht Club. Saturday was cold and rainy. The group decided they wanted a Cambridge lay day. Cambridge also has many interesting old houses and a museum. There is also a unique brewery/ bar named RAR Brewing, where our Jellyfish gods by by boasting on the radio that there were NO jellyfish and he was going swimming in the river. When he tied up at TAYC, he was then surrounded by thousands of small jellyfish that clogged up his AC intake three times. The Choptank was thick with jellyfish for the remainder of the trip. Thursday, we took a lay day to explore Oxford, and eat at the famous Robert Morris Inn. Oxford, one of the oldest towns on the Chesapeake, is a great spot to explore the old houses and marinas. River Rat departed for home to get ready for a big trip south. Friday, the group left for a leisurely ten mile sail to Cambridge, the second oldest city on the Eastern Shore except for Windblown who decided to go to Annapolis Cruisers in Tred Avon Yacht Club dock area

October 2015 Cruise to Choptank River (continued from page 6) Page 7 cruisers enjoyed watching football or tennis. The building used to be a garage and has no front walls or windows. When they are open, they just roll up the garage doors. Sunday dawned with strong winds from the northwest, forcing another lay day. Would we ever leave Cambridge? We were beginning to wonder. We did have cocktails aboard Bottlenose which improved spirits. The winds continued to howl most of the night with boats heeling over in their slips. Towards dawn they abated enough for the group to depart for San Domingo Creek. Monday, the combination of northeast winds and tide made a very uncomfortable slog up the Choptank with large waves around buoy 16. Bottlenose, the 37 foot Prout Catamaran which sails best in heavy weather opted to The group enjoying cocktails aboard Bottlenose in Cambridge head south to take advantage of the sailing. The rest of the group motored on until they were able to bear off into Broad Creek where they could sail or motor sail up to the end of San Domingo Creek. After anchoring, we deployed the dinghies and went into St Michaels. The dinghy dock is a mere two blocks from the main downtown street - close to all the shops and restaurants. The weather was gorgeous and everyone enjoyed eating and shopping before returning to our boats, gathering for cocktails aboard Inspiration, then spending a quiet night on the hook. Tuesday, we departed early for Solomon s Island. Grumpy at the Solomon Island Yacht Club Dock Winds were light, so an uneventful motor sail brought us back to the SIYC. Chinook and C mon Wind opted to stay in the Choptank for another couple of days. The highlight of the day was the arrival of Grumpy - a 117 foot Yacht that took up the entire face dock of the yacht club. Bon Vivant had just anchored quite near the dock and definitely had some tense moments as Grumpy s immense bow headed for them while docking. Our group, now down to four boats had a delightful al fresco dinner at Solomon s Pier and watched the sunset over the Patuxent River. Wednesday, we had light winds, but a strong current that kicked us down the bay to Jutland Creek, home of Point Lookout Marina. The restaurant was closed, but a gorgeous sunset that lasted almost an hour was enjoyed by all. Thursday, the group departed early for Tangier Island so that we could have lunch at Hilda Crockett s Chesapeake House restaurant. Inspiration, Bon Vivant, and Eminence arrived around noon when the tidal current was flooding in, making docking at Parks Marina exciting. Inspiration ran aground waiting for docking instructions adding to the docking excitement. (Autumn Wind had opted to sail to Sandy Point in the Great Wicomico River). Eventually, all were safely docked, and following celebratory Bloody Marys we had a delicious lunch, having arrived just before the Captain Thomas debarked its 100 passengers who were also headed to Ms. Crocketts. Friday, all boats returned safely to their home ports to savor the memories of places visited, adventures shared, and the friendships formed that are the hallmarks of a good RRYC cruise. The cruise covered 250 miles in 14 days.

Page 8 October 2015 September 20, 2015 RRYC s Inaugural Kayak Outing The RRYC kayak fleet officially started their paddling season with a 4.5 mile paddle on Carter s creek Sunday. We met at 9:00 AM and paddled around the creek down to where the Hope & Glory vineyard tents have their kayak rack. We had a great turnout for such a short notice. Participating were: Greg & Susan Kirkbride, Finlay Smith, Stephanie Chaufournier, Bob German, Bruce Julien and me. It was a perfect morning for a great paddle and we were back by 12:00. We were hoping that Mike Kennedy had set up a Starbucks in his boat house but no such luck! We are shooting for a moonlight paddle on either Saturday September 26th or Sunday September 27th. After that we will most likely plan a paddle near Warsaw on the Totuskey Creek. If you are interested be sure to add your name to the fleet listing in our Members website and I ll be sure to keep you informed of future outings. While it was not planned with either the Cuban government or the Vatican, it was kinda neat to be eating Cuban food on Carter Creek the evening that the Pope was visiting Cuba. And for those who have a bit of an adventurous palate, it was fun to do something a little different for the fourth annual Men in the Kitchen, or for this particular night, should I say, Los Caballeros en la Concina. Everyone who attended the dinner Saturday night seemed to enjoy the citrus flavors and Caribbean spices. The meal started with the usual cocktails and appetizers, followed by a meal of lechon azado (grilled pork), ensalada de aguacado, frijol, maíz, y cilantro (avocado, bean, corn, and cilantro salad), y arroz amarillo (and yellow rice), and topped of with a flan de coco (coconut flan) for dessert. Thanks first to Terry & Coleman Brydon, Sissy Crowther, Patti Hope, Kate Raffetto, and Pam & Jim Ward, who prepared the delicious appetizers; and thanks to Fran Westbrook for organizing the appetizers. A special thanks to Coleman Brydon, Dick Franco, Carl Isbrandtsen, Greg Kirkbride, Clark Meader, and Jim Ward for helping with all the slicing and dicing on Saturday morning. It was a record morning starting at 10:00 and finishing up a little after 11:00. And thanks also to Jim Schmidt, Jim Ward, Carl Isbrandtsen, Greg Kirkbride for also helping to serve Saturday night. And as always, thanks to Diane and Kent and to everybody who helped to clean up after the dinner. And a super special thanks to Jan Akers, Harriet Meader, and Sue Kirkbride for helping with their fantastic help outside the galley. Come out and join us in October. While the oyster roast is perennially popular for those who look forward to it, we have had multiple conflicts in the past two years making it difficult to break even because of the price of oysters, equipment rentals, etc. We also anticipate that this year will have some of the same conflicts. Therefore, we will likely do something on the Oktoberfest theme. Stay tuned. More information will be sent out via soon.
