Rappahannock RiveR Yacht club irvington, va September 2013 the headway Junior Regatta The 2013 RRYC Junior Regatta saw boats on the creek and the river, and fun was had by all. Photos by Doug Lyle This year s RRYC Junior Regatta was held on July 27th and was another great success! For a day in late July, the weather could not have been better, with temperatures in the mid-80 s, and there was wind! There were fifty-six racers from RRYC, WRYC, FBYC, HYC, ICYCC, and Premier Sailing. Fifty-two boats entered and competed on three separate courses. The Optimist Green Fleet raced in the creek. The other Optis raced in the river south of the channel, and the Sunfish, Laser Radials, and the 420 s raced on the river north of the channel. While the wind started out good, it died down at noon. Luckily though, it built back up and each course was able to get five races completed. The races were followed by a hamburger and hotdog dinner and the awards ceremony. RRYC Juniors had a great day racing, too. Of the four RRYC Juniors that raced, three placed. John (continued on page 3)

The weather is starting to cool down, which means it s the start of the fall sailing season. RRYC has several major events, but one premier sailing event which is new to us this year is the Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta. Please make an effort to volunteer for this premier event, as well as other sailing and social events that have been planned. I would like to remind everyone about the bagged and block ice Honor System. Please remember to fill out the purchase form which is on the clipboard inside ice box. If you feel it s necessary to send out a RRYC Club-related message to the membership, please have it approved by our Club Manager, Officers or a Board Member to be sent out by either the Commodore or Secretary. From the Vice Commodore By Tom Chapman As most of you know, RRYC is the host yacht club for the Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta this year, October Our primary activity is Race Management. The on-shore festivities (cocktail parties, breakfasts, dinners, etc.) will be held on Bruce Sanders field, through his generous sponsorship. Since this is the first year the Turkey Shoot Regatta will be hosted in Irvington, we want to make it the most successful ever. I would like to urge all of you with even a passing interest in racing, or just looking for a great way to end the sailing season, to enter the regatta. For many of the entrants it is the only regatta/race they do all year, so it is an easy- going event and a lot of fun. It is also for a wonderful cause, Hospice Services of the Northern Neck and Riverside Hospice. Please join us and register today. The Notice of Race and registrations information can be found on the Club website. September s Boating Safety Tip: Use Common Sense: One of the most important parts of boating safety is to use your common sense. This means operating at a safe speed at all times, especially in crowded areas. Be alert at all times, and steer clear of large vessels and watercraft that can be restricted in their ability to stop or turn. Also be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids, all of which have been placed there for one reason only- to ensure your own boating safety.

September 2013 Vail placed 2nd in the OptiBlue Fleet. Hannah Richardson placed 2nd in the Laser Radial fleet, with Daniel Resio finishing right behind her in 3rd. Alex Resio finished 11th out of the twenty-three Optis. Junior Regatta (continued from page 1) The race officials, Arabella Denvir, Bo Bragg, and Scott Vail, along with all of the RRYC volunteers made this a huge success on and off the water. Plans to Page 3 make next year s regatta just as great - if not better - are already in progress. See more news of our Juniors racing on page 5. John Vail and Alex Resio take to the open water in their Optis at the 2013 Junior Regatta. Fall Racing and Cruising Begin By Dwight Timm, RRYC Fleet Captain Photos by Camille Bragg The passing of Jim Young, member of YPRCC, saddens the Northern Neck racing community. Jim was a racer for many years and then in the 1990 s became the mainstay of racing for YPRCC. He ran most all the races for YPRCC as well as providing help for many other races in the local area as Race Officer, with his assistant Gary Fricke, on his boat Dwindle Down. He was always ready to help and will be dearly missed. A wonderful gathering of YPRCC members and friends at YPRCC Clubhouse was held on August 14 to celebrate Jim s life and his contribution to our community. RRYC starts fall racing on August 25 for Typhoons, Flying Scots, and the Junior Program. YPRCC begins their fall Wednesday Evening race series on the Corrotman River August 28. This series will run through October 16. YPRCC will host their Fall Regatta on September 7. RRYC will host the Rappahannock Cup Regatta on September 21 & 22 and then the RRYC Commodore s Cup Regatta on October 5. Fall racing for both RRYC and YPRCC will end just past mid-october. Steve Zukor s cruising program has run through the summer and has two more scheduled cruises to go; Follow the Wind cruise departed August 31 and Up the Bay cruise sets out October 14. The October 14 cruise really sounds great, being at a time when it should be cool with good fall wind a comfortable and fun time to be on the Bay. (Editor s note: Steve announces a newly scheduled cruise elsewhere in this issue.) For all the racing and cruising details as well as NORs and Sailing Instructions, go to RRYC s website. Have a great fall on the water where ever and for whatever reason it may be.

Page 4 September 2013 Kids Cruise 2013 By Frank Miller, Cruise Leader Question : What do jet ski, tubing, crabbing, Slip and Slide, water balloons, squirt guns, rocket launches, tire swing, beach, slack line, sand castles, tree house, glow sticks, lightening bugs, hot dogs, beans, cole slaw, macaroni and cheese, and watermelon ice cream have in common? Answer: Nine great kids: Four from Wetted Bliss (Zukor), four from Windblown (Miller) and one from Inspiration (Brydon). And six of them spent the night on board the respective boats. Photos from Frank Miller The 2013 Kids Cruise was fun for kids of all ages! New Cruise! It s a Sail-In at the Tred Avon Yacht Club, October By Steve Zukor, Cruise Captain The Tred Avon Yacht Club has invited RRYC members to come to their club in Oxford, MD, for a Sail-In on Friday & Saturday, October There will be an informal dinner at TAYC on Friday night and a more formal sit-down dinner and dancing on Saturday night. Note: Jackets required Saturday for the gents. $35 per person. Dock space is available on a first come/first served basis. In addition, some moorings and limited anchorage spaces are also available. (continued on page 5)

September 2013 New Cruise! (continued from page 4) Page 5 During the day on Saturday, there may be an opportunity to tour the MEBA school in Oxford and try out the large ship simulator that they use to train bay pilots. This is supposedly very cool - giving you the experience of piloting a 500-foot freighter out of Baltimore Harbor. We will let you know if this works out. Coleman Brydon (ncbrydon@gmail.com or ) is the cruise leader. Please contact him immediately to sign up because the dinner/dance is limited to the first 100 people. Summer Escapades of RRYC Junior Racers By Daryl Resio, Junior Sailing Director Our young sailors have headed out in many different directions this summer. RRYC had six sailors who sailed competitively, Hannah Richardson, Daniel Resio, Alex Resio, Boyd Bragg, John Vail, and Reese Bragg. Here are their adventures: Hannah Richardson Hannah had a busy summer working a summer job but managed to race her Laser Radial in both the Virginia Commonwealth Cup at FBYC and our RRYC Annual Junior Regatta. The Commonwealth Cup had some stiff competition as well as wind this year, as can be seen in the picture of Hannah sailing there on the 2nd day. Hannah had a great series of races at RRYC and took home second place. (continued on page 6) Alex Resio Alex has spent a large part of his summer on the water. Only part of it was spent racing though. He raced in the VA Commonwealth Cup, ICYCC, RRYC Annual Junior Regatta, and Ware River Yacht Club. He finished in the top ten in both our RRYC regatta and at WRYC, and he took 2nd place at ICYCC. While spending time at the Club this summer he has also ventured into sailing other boat classes. He started sailing Sunfish and hopes to race it in 2014 or He also has been sailing his newly acquired 1967 Flying Junior and has become proficient at both the skipper and crew position.

Page 6 September 2013 Reese Bragg Reese has amped her up racing schedule this year. She raced in the Green Fleet at the VA Commonwealth Cup, Junior Olympics at Baltimore County Sailing I (finished 1st) Center, AYC Junior Regatta, SSA Sandy MacVickar regatta, HYC Junior Regatta, and West River Sailing Club Boyd. She managed to have two 1st place finishes and one 3rd. After flying into Philly from Glasgow, Scotland, Reese, Boyd and their parents kept heading north with their Optis on top of the Suburban to Summer Escapades (continued from page 5) Portland, Maine for the USODA New England Championship. This was Reese s first white fleet event with 292 boats in the fleet. She finished 269th place wearing a lobster hat all three days that she bought downtown. Reese also received the Top Girl award at the FBYC AOD. Daniel Resio (continued on page 7) For the second year in a row, the US Sunfish Association invited Daniel to race at the Sunfish Worlds for the US. Daniel raced his Sunfish in both the North Americans and the Youth Worlds, which were held at the Brant Beach Yacht Club in New Jersey this year. This international competition is world class with the countries that use the Sunfish as a standard boat between the Optimist and the Laser Radial bringing the best sailors. This year, Daniel moved up in the small fleet of boats and finished 22nd in the North Americans and 21st in the Worlds. He also ventured into the world of Laser Radial racing this year, sailing in the Virginia Commonwealth Cup, at ICYCC, RRYC, and WRYC. He took 1st at ICYCC and 3rd in our RRYC Annual Regatta. His sailing was cut short at WRYC when his mast broke. Daniel found another way to stay on the water as much as possible this summer, sharing his love for sailing and helping to train young and new sailors this year working at Premier Sailing School. He plans to continue racing his Laser in 2014 and fit some Sunfish races in when he can.

September 2013 Page 7 Boyd Bragg Summer Escapades (continued from page 6) John Vail John has also kept a busy schedule this summer, filling up his racing resume with some impressive finishes in six regattas. He raced in the Virginia Commonwealth Cup at FBYC, ICYCC, Tred Avon Yacht Club, RRYC Annual Junior Regatta, Ware River Yacht Club, and the FBYC Annual One Design. John finished 3rd in his fleet at the Virginia Commonwealth Cup against stiff competition and 4th in his fleet at the FBYC AOD where only three races were completed. At our RRYC regatta John finished 4th overall. John really found his speed taking 1st overall in both the ICYCC and the WRYC regattas. The second day of racing at Ware River was a challenge with strong winds throughout the day, but even with a capsize in the final race, John conquered the winds and the rest of the Optimists. This past spring Boyd finished 29th out of 117 boats in the team trials qualifying him for the US Team heading to the Volvo Gill Optimists Nationals in Largs, Scotland. Boyd was sitting in 8th place after day one, but the winds on the fourth and fifth days of the regatta were unlike anything he had ever seen, gusting up to 27 knots. Many competitors did not even go out to race, but Boyd did and finished every race. On the last race of the regatta the seas were 3 feet and on the downwind leg about five boat lengths from the gate, Boyd was surfing down a wave when another boat on his port side tried to duck under him, but ended up running his bow under Boyd s stern pushing his stern and rudder out of the water. The other boat continued to plow and Boyd s boat capsized. He was able to right it and finish the race. Later when telling his father about it, he said, Dad I knew the race was over for me even though I was in top 20 but I just decided to have fun and see how fast I could sail my boat. Boyd also raced in the: VA Commonwealth Cup at FBYC - 9th of 48 boats, Junior Olympics at Baltimore County Sailing Center - 12th of 51, AYC Junior Regatta - 22nd of 48, SSA Sandy MacVickar regatta - 7th of 45, HYC Junior Regatta 2nd in blue fleet, West River Sailing Club - 3rd of 32 and 1st in blue fleet, USODA National Championship - 23rd out of 160 boats and qualified for team trials in Stamford, CT in 2014, USODA New England Championship - 84th place and qualified a second time for 2014 team trials and FBYC AOD - 3rd overall and 2nd in blue fleet. Boyd plans to continue training and racing this fall and winter. Boyd will be working towards making the USA Team for 2014 at USODA Team Trials at Stamford Yacht Club in CT next spring.

Page 8 September 2013 Other Junior Sailing 2013 at RRYC By Arabella Denvir We had two Junior Sailing weeks at RRYC this season, one in early June and the next in mid-july. The June 3-7 session was attended by Eliza Carr Schmidt, Nolan Marfiak, grandson of Kent White, Frances Hope, granddaughter of Patti Hope, Mary Malone Johnson, Millie Tompkins, Harrison Tompkins, Photo from Arabella Denvir Jackson Latell and Eric Blandford chatting on a run in their Optis. September Typhoon Update By Chuck Carmichael, Typhoon Fleet Commander and Reese Bragg. The focus of the week was to progress each student through the stages of the sailing syllabus. The July session was attended by Mary Rose DeCoste, granddaughter of Bill and Linda DeCoste, Sarah Berkeley Whitley and, Drew and Eric Blandford, grandchildren of Frank and Grace Anne Miller, and Jackson Latell. This was a learning but fun based week Mary Rose learned to sail a Sunfish, Sarah Berkely learned to sail a Phantom, Drew sailed an Optimist, and Eric and Jackson had fun and some crazy moments in Optimists. Things have been fairly quiet around the RRYC Typhoon program this past month, although a few of us ventured off to the 74th annual One Design at FBYC for what was intended to be a two-day multiple race regatta. We got in just one race Saturday morning, and the balance of the day was cancelled due to the threat of inclement weather. We showed up Sunday morning and there was a one hour postponement for lack of wind. During the postponement it started to rain so the balance of the regatta was canceled. In the only completed race the Anthem team took first, Creampuff took second, and Ladybug got the third. The Sunday Typhoon and Flying Scott Sunday Program commenced on Sunday, August 25. The Sunday Start Times have been moved back to 13:00 to accommodate the needs of many Typhooners, and we thank the Scotts for their co-operation. This will be an opportunity to get the rust off before the start of the Wednesday night program. The Wednesday night Typhoon Program gets underway on September 4th. The projected sunset for the 4th is 7:30 pm, so we will move our Wednesday Night Start Time to 5:30 pm. I repeat, the Start Time on September 4 is 5:30 pm. As the daylight hours get shorter as the season progresses we may again change the start time. Due mainly to the Typhoon Nationals close proximity to the October Turkey Shoot and the difficulty of hosting two major regattas in a two week time frame we are reluctantly deferring the Typhoon National Regatta until 2014 and thereafter we hope to hold it on a biennial basis on even numbered years. We intend to devote our time and enthusiasm solely to the Hospice Turkey Shoot Regatta, and we hope to have the largest Typhoon fleet in the history of the Annual Hospice Turkey Shoot, which is now in its 18th year. Put this on your To Do list. Register now for the Turkey Shoot. Early registration for the Turkey Shoot Regatta ends September 15. This Regatta is a major fund raiser for the Northern Neck Hospice Support Services. It deserves our support. Contact Ullman Sails for registration material.

September 2013 Page 9 From the Galley By Craig Akers, Social Chairman Last September the Men in the Kitchen was a big hit (and they didn t even turn on the grill). No hotdogs hamburgers, or ribs. Who knew the RRYC men could cook so well? But hey, everybody ate too much and hung around til late enjoying the camaraderie. This month the fall social season kicks off on Saturday, September 21, when the men plan to do it again, assuming enough men volunteer. We will serve up a luscious Greek salmon en croute with Basmati rice and salad, plus cheescake for dessert. Make your reservations via to dinner@rryc.org by Sunday, September 15. I hope we see you all at the Club. Any men who would like to participate, please let me know ASAP. As usual, there will be prep work in the morning, and finishing touches and serving in the evening. Last year was a lot of fun in the kitchen, and this year will be more of the same. Have your personal dates on the RRYC calendar!
