1 RAPPAHANNOCK RIVER YACHT CLUB IRVINGTON, VA March 2012 THE HEADWAY 2012 Cruising Schedule Promises Adventures Near and Far By Stephanie Chaufournier, Cruising Fleet Commander Maine, Rock Hall, MD, and Ocracoke Island are among the destinations for this yearʼs cruisers. This year s calendar includes a little of something for everyone. As tradition, two long cruises are lined up for the spring and fall and several where the wind blows cruises are scattered throughout the season. In between are new events to the calendar, including a Kid s Cruise geared to kids and grandkids. If there is sufficient interest, intrepid sailors will head north to the cruising grounds off the coast of Maine. Our season wraps up with an autumn cruise to the Choptank. Check out the updated cruising section of the Club s website for more details on upcoming events (continued on page 3)

The spirit of the RRYC was everywhere. Many people declared their pleasure in the feeling of camaraderie generated by the event and by the Club s members. Special thanks go to the dozens of people who organized and brought the food, prepared the Club before the gathering and cleaned up after. There were members and non-members at the Club from 7 A.M. on who made the event so incredibly successful. Many, many thanks to all of you! There have been questions about how the Club would use the contributions to the Capital Development Fund established in David s name. Kate would like us to set aside these monies to be used for major projects instead of general operating expenses. As an example: We anticipate that our dock will need to be replaced in about five years. Therefore, if we can put away funds over the next few years, we will be able to start improvements when the time comes in memory of David. The Club has two Boston Whalers which can be purchased by members: One 15 center steering boat, age unknown, with 60HP Evanrude which needs work, and a trailer, which also needs work. One 10 Whaler, no motor, age unknown, with new bottom paint. If you are interested in either of these boats, please call Kent or me to discuss. Warm weather is not far off, which means we ll be launching boats before you know it! We hope to see you at LAST Friday. Club Manager - Kent White

This cruise is tentative, pending sufficient interest. KID S CRUISE 8/25-26: Frank and Grace Ann Miller lead kids and grandkids in search of pirate s treasure. This overnight cruise will be a great introduction to club cruising for kids. Dinghy races and other fun games will be included. 4 Page 4 March 2012 Get Ready for Typhoon Racing By Ned Crockett, Typhoon Fleet Commander Heads up! April is the kick-off month for the Typhoon racing season. We begin the season with our annual cookout and racing seminar led by renowned sailboat racer, sail maker, and club member Jerry Latell. Anyone considering or planning to participate in Typhoon racing this year is encouraged to attend, 18:00 to 20:00, Wednesday, April 11. Following this special event, the first race of the Wednesday Spring Series will occur April 25 with a start time of 17:00. Racers should try to be in the Rappahannock River near the Carter Creek entrance before the start time. In case of potential inclement weather, a decision to race or not will be posted on the Typhoon Racing page of by 15:00. There will be eight scheduled Wednesday races: April 25, May 2 through the 30, and June 6 and 13. If you find that you cannot participate on a Wednesday or two, you can still be in the running with our throw out procedure. This is explained on our webpage. New this year, as a result of our survey, will be a gathering at RRYC after the race to have dinner, which we individually bring to cook on the grill, and to discuss our racing experiences that day. Do we really need a Protest Committee? We should try to motor to our docks as soon as possible after racing, secure our boats, and meet at the Club for dinner and fellowship. Another racing opportunity in April will be our first Sunday of racing with the Flying Scots, which will be on April 29. Check the Flying Scot racing page for time. The location will be in the River off of the Carter Creek entrance. There will be four Sundays Photo by Blanche Stevens of racing: April 29, and May 6, 20, and 27. Colorful Typhoons in 2011 racing on Carter Creek. With the Typhoon Nationals scheduled for June 22-24, other Club races in which to participate, our Fall Series, and the Turkey Shoot October 6-7, the Typhoon season will be full of racing opportunities again this year. Come join in on the fun. If you are still looking for racing adventures, be sure to sign up at the new RRYC Crew Finder page and race with the big guys and gals. Use that page for finding crew for yourselves too. PHRF Racing By Dwight Timm, PHRF Fleet Commander I have a new page for PHRF Racing on the club web site at under Sailing and then PHRF Racing. If you go to it, the first thing you will see is that it is not up to date and that is my next project which I hope to have done shortly after you read this. Page will include PHRF and CBYRA general information, where to go and how to apply for a PHRF Rating, Race Instruction and NORs for PHRF Racing, etc. As our Commodore said in the February Headway Remember, we are a sailing club, so plan to get on the water and have fun with your friends at RRYC this year. We have a very good Committee under (continued on page 5)

5 March 2012 Page 5 PHRF Racing (continued from page 4) the leadership of your Vice Commodore, Tommy Ash and Fleet Captain, Debbie Cycotte, working on what started out as PHRF racing and is now covering all aspects of racing, cruising, training, etc. Our Committee s goal is to provide a well coordinated and fun year on the water for all RRYC members. I will be pushing PHRF racing as part of RRYC s on the water activities. So let s get started by taking advantage of all the seminars and training activities both at RRYC and around the area. These are well listed in The Headway and will be on the web pages. I would like to see all of you who own a sailboat that can be PHRF rated, renew your rating or apply for a new rating so you can come out and race our PHRF Regattas and the Rappahannock Cup Races. If you had a PHRF Rating in 2011 you should have already received a renewal notice. When you send it back, be sure your address is listed and correct, as you will receive your new rating by . Also list any changes, and if you think you might like to fly spinnaker or asymmetric spinnaker be sure to check the boxes and fill in needed information so you can be rated for both spinnaker and non-spinnaker. If you want to add spinnaker later it will cost you $15 where it is free at a renewal price of $25 before April 1. If you want to apply for a new rating go to and you will find all the information you need to apply plus forms. I will be happy to provide help if you need it. The committee I mentioned above is made up of RRYC and Yankee Point Racing and Cruising Club (YPRCC) members. We have agreed on a number of issues to try ro improve our racing. One is the incorporation of a Cruising Class for the joint PHRF Regattas and maybe the Rappahannock Cup races. Between our two clubs we need to get enough boats interested to have a cruising class start. We encourage you to get a valid PHRF rating; however if you don t, the two clubs may jointly assign you a rating for At the February Committee meeting the two clubs agreed to assign two delegates each to be the Executive Committee for the Rappahannock River Yacht Racing Fleet (RRYRF). RRYC s two Delegates are Vice Commodore Tommy Ash and Fleet Captain Debbie Cycotte. Executive Committee will be responsible for managing fleet business and revising the RRYRF Constitution and By-Laws to better reflect present Fleet make up of just the two clubs. They will also be responsible for coordinating the PHRF Regattas, the Rappahannock Cup Races, and the River High Point Award program. Watch the calendar as One Design and Junior racing starts late April along with YPRCC Wednesday evening Spring Race Series on the Corrotoman River. YPRCC would welcome our participation and those short informal Wednesday evening races are a great way to hone your crew or just get started racing. Our first PHRF Regatta is May 12 hosted by YPRCC. I will continue to provide more information on our PHRF program in future issues of The Headway as well as on the web site. So...keep tuned and let s think SAILING AND RACING. In Memoriam Cruiser, racer, Beaver, mentor, and former Commodore David Raffetto died on February 4 th, 2012, leaving a huge hole in the life of RRYC. A member since 2002, David touched every aspect of the Club at some point, always imparting humor and a positive outlook. His quick laugh and love of sailing enriched the lives of many, and will be greatly missed.

7 March 2012 P l e a s e w e l c o m e F r a n Westbrook as Chair of the newly re-formed Social Committee. Fran has attended the Culinary Institute of America and brings a lot of fresh ideas and talent to enhance the Club s social experience. As you are reading this, Fran and the Social Committee are planning to use a mix of catering and inhouse volunteers to provide a variety of culinary delights for your enjoyment during the coming months. Fran and her committee are looking forward to creating a low-key, yet rewarding social experience for the rest of us. If you would like to work with Fran, either in the kitchen, planning themed events, decorating tables, or organizing after-dinner programs, please contact her at fwestbrook1106@ Social News verizon.net or XXX-XXX-X. All are welcome in whatever capacity you are willing to serve! Everyone should have received via the link to the Social Survey, which will also be used to help plan events. It is a very short survey, only ten questions, so please take a few minutes to respond to it if you have not already done so. All responses are anonymous and will be greatly appreciated. If you did not receive the all hands e- mail, the survey can be found at: s/9nbtblp. Be sure to wear the green on March 17, as we celebrate St. Patrick s Day at RRYC. Dinner will be catered by Windows on the Water, and will consist of proper fare for the occasion. See Page 7 menu box below. Remember to make your dinner reservations via to dinner@rryc.org by Saturday, March 10. Cost is $20 per adult, which includes wine, beer, and mixers. Following dinner, we will be treated to a presentation by relatively new member Clark Meader on Sailing the Baltic Sea. In the summer of 2009, Clark joined a friend and professor at the University of Kiel in a 36 Polish-made boat, on a threeday sail from Kiel, Germany to Sønderby, Denmark, as part of Kiel Week, the biggest sailing event in the world. Most of us have not sailed that far afield, and will really enjoy seeing pictures and hearing about this adventure!
