Port Hope Yacht Club The Rudder From The Helm May 2012 Message from the Helm It is a beautiful Sunday afternoon and the yacht club is a hub of activity. As many of you know, Mother s Day weekend is one of my favourite weekends of the year. The sheer excitement of putting the boat in the water brings a smile to my face. I am not sure whether it is because I look forward to the sailing season, getting out on the water, relaxing away from the regular grind, or whether it has to do with a more simplistic concept. Boats, specifically sailboats, do not belong on land. On the hard, they look awkward displaced like fish out of water. Graceless. However, once they are safely floating on the water, their grace returns. They become beautiful even majestic. They seem to glide effortlessly across the water, at peace with the world. In perfect balance. Boats are meant to be in the water. Seeing them back where they belong makes me happy. Simple, right? Can t wait! Around the Club A big thank you to Dirk, Shane, Geoff and Darren for the safe return of the Queen. She managed to make it all the way to Sandbanks. The story she would tell if only she could talk. Many people have been in to get sails measured. If you have not yet done so and plan to race this season, please contact Britt, Rob or James to see about getting your information recorded. We are looking for volunteers act as a committee boat for our racing season. If you, or anyone else you know, might be interested, please contact Britt as soon as possible. Thanks. Geoff has been working hard to get the moorings checked. There has had to be a bit of shuffling around and everything looks great. As it stands, we have no extra moorings. Any prospective members are being put on a waiting list. We would like to welcome Dirk s daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Lonney Sunday who have joined us as crewing members. Welcome and enjoy your time at the club!
Upcoming Events The 50 th Anniversary Committee will be meeting on Sunday, May 20 th following the race (around 2pm). We will be pulling together some ideas for the Brockport Weekend. We will be asking for everyone s support as we plan a super exciting weekend. Join us for the meeting if you can. Anniversary Items The Anniversary hats and shirts are in and look great. The new burgees have also arrived. These will be available at the various club functions. Hats: $15.00 Shirts: $35.00 We are offering a special deal which includes a hat and a burgee for $20.00 Cash would be appreciated for these items. Annual Spring Meeting Thank you to those who attended the General Meeting on Friday, April 27 th at 7pm. A copy of the Minutes are included in the Rudder. Launch May 12th Steve will be collecting monies for launch on Saturday. The cost will be $ Cash please. Remember to bring proof of your insurance as well. The Lease Fee is also due at this time. Cheques are accepted for this amount. Mother s Day Tea May 13 th The membership is asked to bring a sandwich tray or sweets Work Party May 26 th Please plan to be available as we have many clean up and repair projects on the list. We want to be sure that the Club looks its best for Sailpast and other activities coming up. Lazerette Items Past member, Bruce Dinner, passed away in early May. There will be a memorial service at a later date. A card will be sent to Debbie Reid on the Club s behalf.

PORT HOPE YACHT CLUB Spring General Meeting Unapproved Minutes April 27, 2012 Call to order: 7:10 pm Commodore's Comments: Jan welcomed everyone to the meeting. She thanked Gayle Martin for all her hard work and for taking on the challenge for the coming season. Kathy Boon was thanked for taking over the pop fridge. Dirk Boon, Geoff Boon, Darren Shaw, and Kate and Shane Wilson were thanked for rescuing The Queen from Presqu ile after it broke away during a storm. The membership was asked to volunteer for Brockport Weekend as this event will need people to help organize separate from the 50 th Committee. Jan also thanked Orn Haraldsson for selling the 50 th Anniversary apparel. Adoption of Fall General Meeting s Minutes: Motion by Dirk Boon. Seconded by Roger Godin. CARRIED. Business Arising from Fall General Meeting Minutes Vote on Motions from the Fall Meeting o Article 28, paragraph 6 Honorary Life Members Vote: Yes 27; Present voting members 17; By Proxy 2; Members not present counts as a yes 10 Vote: No 4; Present voting members Vote: Abstained 1; By present voting member Motion CARRIED to change Article 28 of the Constitution o Article 25, Term of Office Vote: Yes 15; Present voting members 5 yes; Members not present counts as a yes 10 Vote: No 18; 17 Present voting members, By Proxy 1 Vote : Abstain 1; By Proxy 1 Motion DEFEATED to change Article 25 of the Constitution Treasurer s Report: Steve Rhines pointed out that 2012 will be an expensive year due to the 50 th Anniversary, Brockport Weekend and repairs to The Queen. The budget for Social may seem high but Social always makes money to cover their expenses. Rob Prewer asked that the financials not be posted on the website. It was noted that there were copies available at the meeting for the membership and that the budget will be posted with the minutes at the Club. Secretary s Report: We have 22 voting members present plus the Commodore, 10 voting members are absent and we received 2 proxies. All reciprocals were sent out in February. The reciprocal binder is being updated and will be available at launch. The minutes of this meeting will be sent to Danny Lee to be published in the next Rudder. Please keep a copy of The Rudder so you will have the minutes for the Fall Meeting. Please make sure when the membership list becomes available, that you check your address to make sure it is correct. is the preferred way to communicate since it saves the Club money in printing and mailing costs.
Committee Reports Social: Gayle Martin is enjoying being Social Chair. She thanked Kate Wilson for all the mentoring she has provided. The Executive and past Commodores were thanked for their support and help. Gayle is trying to do different events to draw people to the Club that may not attend social events. There have been 12 events since the Fall meeting including 22 people that went to War Horse in Toronto. Sail Past is June 3 and it is going to be a huge event. Gayle is looking for volunteers to organize a Back to the 60 s event on September 8. Sailing: Britt Earl appreciates that so many people in the Club work so hard and make such a large contribution so that we don t have to call in outside help. This really keeps our costs down. The Club has been re-instated by PHRF. About half of the sails at the Club have been measured and these measurements will be sent to PHRF. The Sailing Program was presented to sailors at a recent meeting. There will be 2 Wednesday series, 7 races each. There will be one Sunday series with 7 races, in addition to the Specialty Races and Regatta. Awards will be pendants this year. The specialty awards will still be trophies as previously awarded. Parks & Recreation are putting out tenders for dredging, as told to Britt when he called to follow up on dredging. Since there is no consensus about having a committee boat, Britt has reorganized the race course. It was necessary to vote for Britt and accept him as Sailing Master since he now has been a member for one year. This was CARRIED. Property: Fred Reid has scheduled a work party for the second Saturday after launch. The major project this year is the chimney. There has been damage from the wind to the porch, please be careful about leaning on the rails. Harbour: The Queen was retrieved from the Sand Banks. Geoff Boon purchased a full barrel of chain. The moorings are being checked. Currently, the harbour is full and we have no space available. Membership: Darren Shaw reported that there is great interest in the Club but we are full. There is a waiting list maintained which has about 6 people on it. People who inquire are encouraged to become a Social Member so they can get to know people at the Club. New Business Brockport Weekend Committee: Jan asked for a volunteer to Chair this committee. This is separate from the 50 th Committee. The responsibilities would include Friday night dinner; Saturday dinner, entertainment and races; Sunday breakfast; drinks and cleanup. Kate Wilson said she would look after the liquor license and whatever beverages are required. We will be put up a sign up sheet breaking down what is needed and people can sign up. There is going to be a huge turnout from Brockport this year and the membership needs to step up. 50 th Anniversary Report: Dirk Boon presented to the membership the generous donations Cameco will make to the Club to honour of our 50 th Anniversary. The full details are recorded in the minutes of the March Executive meeting. The Northumberland News is writing some articles about PHYC and the harbour. If any members have any photos or information, please let Jan know. Some past and founding members have already been interviewed. The next meeting of the committee is May 20. Franz Kruez is home from the hospital. Glyn Marr presented a motion to update the Smoking bylaw, Bylaw 16. Seconded by John Shaw. CARRIED. The bylaw is to be changed to: There will be no smoking in the Club House or in any other building that is on the PHYC leased property. John Shaw proposed that there be a floor installed under the pavilion. He has a quote of $ for either a concrete pad or a pressure treated deck. Glyn Marr asked that other materials be quoted as well such as
interlocking brick. John also suggested we name the pavilion instead of calling it the Shelter. The name that was bantered around was The Anchorage. The floor should be completed before Brockport Weekend. A motion was put forward by John to have the approval to spend up to $3000 to put a floor under The Anchorage. Moved by Orn and seconded by Shane Wilson. CARRIED. Property is going to fix the porch railing and put a caution sign on the rail in the mean time. Shane asked that the old stuff from the garage and station house be removed so that useful items can be stored there. In particular, the cans of gas marked old gas should be removed. Ruby Evans Shaw will plant the gardens and flower pots and she would like some help. Danny Lee will continue to make himself available at the Club from launch until the Duty Roster starts, to do clean up. Stuart Mill requested a copy of the lease and that it be available to the membership. He has requested that the Constitution and Bylaws be reprinted to include the new changes and be available to the membership. Adjournment: 8:50 pm Attendance: Dirk Boon Jan Marani Darren Shaw Geoff Boon Glyn Marr John Shaw Gerald Cox Bob McCaw & Donna Eastwood Maurice Sneep Gayle Duncan Wayne McLean Shane & Kate Wilson Britt & Jennifer Earl Stuart Mill & Glynis Tomkinson Ruby Evans Shaw Ric Newman-Jones Ken Garrett Lynn Pearce Roger Godin Tony Peters Orn Haraldsson Rob & Lynn Prewer Steve Hunter & Sandra Fred Reid Danny Lee Steve Rhines
