2 Welcome We would like to take this opportunity to welcome all Responders to the 3 rd Annual Sissonville Fire & Rescue School. In 2008, the school was a huge success with over 400 Students trained in 27 Classes in our unique Two Weekend Event. This event will once again be held at Sissonville High School located at 6100 Sissonville Drive. Registration All Students should Pre-Register by the February 16, 2009 deadline to receive a Free Fire School T-Shirt. Registration may be made by mail or online at the Fire School Website. ALL registrations must be Pre-Paid or they will be disregarded. This is due to students registering and not showing up to pay the day of class. 3 Two Weekend Classes (March 6 8 & 13 15, 2009) 001 Cost: $100 Sun 6p-10p 8a-6p 8a-6p Both Weekends 002 Cost: $100 Sun 6p-10p Both Weekends 003 Cost: $150 Sun 6p-10p Both Weekends 004 Cost: $100 Sun Both Weekends WV Firefighter Level I (Jr.) Instructor: Lance Carney (St. Albans FD & Sissonville VFD) This basic Delmar Firefighter I training program meets the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 standard for firefighter training. Topics include fire department organization, protective clothing, fire behavior, SCBA, rescue, forcible entry, ropes, fire department apparatus, ladders, fire streams, hoses, salvage, overhaul, fire alarm communications, safety, and portable fire extinguishers. Equipment Required: Full Turnout Gear and SCBA w/ Spare Bottle Textbook: $65.00 Workbook: $25.00 WV Firefighter Level II (Jr.) Instructor: C.W. Sigman (Ret. Chief South Charleston FD) This Delmar Firefighter II course is the second level training of the WVU firefightertraining program and meets the NFPA 1001 standard for firefighter training. Topics include arson detection, breathing apparatus, fire ground operations, flammable and combustible liquid fires, hydraulics, water movement, ventilation, preplanning, and rescue. Pre-Requisites: WV Firefighter I (Recommended) Equipment Required: Full Turnout Gear and SCBA w/ Spare Bottle Textbook: $65.00 Workbook: $25.00 Fire Instructor I Instructor: Mike Freeman (Resa VII PST Coordinator) The objective of this course is to instruct fire service personnel in meeting the requirements of Level 1 of NFPA 1041 and is a requirement of the Fire Officer II Standard that goes into effect in West Virginia in This course is designed to train participants to organize and deliver basic firefighter programs. This program covers speech, psychology of learning, planning instruction, teaching techniques, presenting instruction, audiovisual materials and methods, testing and evaluation. This class cannot be used to obtain an Adult Teaching Permit and/or to teach for RESA and/or WVU. Pre-Requisites: Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, HazMat Awareness Textbook: $50.00 Aerial Apparatus Driver and Operator Instructor: Matt Jackson (Ret. Capt. Charleston FD) This course is designed to educate the driver/operators responsible for operating fire apparatus equipped with aerial devices. These include aerial ladders, aerial ladder platforms, articulating elevating platforms, telescoping elevating platforms, and water towers. It includes the information necessary to meet the job performance requirements of NFPA 1002, Standard for Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Professional Qualifications, Chapters 1, 2, 4, and 5. Equipment Required: Full Turnout Gear and SCBA w/ Spare Bottle Textbook: $40.00

4 Weekend One day Only (March 6, 2009) 101 Cost: $15 6p-10p day 102 Cost: $15 6p-10p day Swiftwater Awareness (Jr.) Instructor: Tom Miller (Sissonville VFD) level of swift-water rescue training. Course topics include organizational role(s) and objectives, safety, the drowning problem, water types, reading water and water flows, rescue failure(s), logistics, hand signals, risk versus benefit, environmental concerns, flood characteristics, response strategies, PPE, and types of water rescue. Thermal Imaging Cameras for the Fire Service (Jr.) Instructor: Rodney Winter (Charleston FD) This class will give the students an overview of thermal imaging cameras, their use in structural fire fighting and many other uses in the field. You are encouraged to bring your Fire Departments Thermal Imaging Camera for practice; however, it is not required. Weekend One urday Only (March 7, 2009) 110 Cost: $30 urday 111 Cost: $30 9a 5p urday Fire Department Planning and Response to Weather Emergencies Instructor: Casey Hall (Kentucky Fire Commission), Jason Franklin (NWS) Fire Departments today do much more than just respond to fires. The fire service has an increasing role as an all-hazard response agency. Each year, West Virginia experiences a wide variety of weather phenomena, which ultimately leads to responses from the local fire department and other public safety agencies. The morning session of this course will include information about some of the more common weather phenomena experiences, how to pre-plan for it, ways to anticipate its arrival, and discuss ways to improve fire department response in its aftermath. In the afternoon session, the National Weather Service will present a SKYWARN Weather Spotter Class. This course meets all requirements for FRT 112, Emergency/Disaster Planning. Calling the MAYDAY Instructor: Paul Niedbalski (Charleston FD) After Classroom time, the hands-on portion of this course will simulate the following conditions: being trapped or lost in a room, being in a collapsed ceiling situation, being hung/snagged on debris, and falling through a floor or roof all with PPE including SCBA. The firefighter must perform a MAYDAY call and demonstrate firefighter rescue skills at the master level. Equipment Required: Full Turnout Gear and SCBA w/ Spare Bottle Weekend One Only (March 8, 2009) 112 Cost: $30 Sun GPS & Mapping (Jr.) Instructor: Larry Boggs (Major, WV Army National Guard) The class will cover the basics of Land Navigation and review of Topographical maps. Students will learn the basics of the GPS and obtain the knowledge needed to evaluate hand held GPS s for the uses in there work environment. Equipment Required: GPS unit if your Department has one

5 Weekend Two & Three Day Classes (March 7 & 8, 2009) 120 Sun urday & 121 Sun urday & 122 Sun urday & 123 Sun urday & 124 Sun urday & 125 Sun urday & Vehicle Machinery Search and Rescue Awareness / Operations (Jr.) Instructor: Steve Cavender (Pt. Pleasant VFD) This hands-on course will go beyond the basic skills acquired in Basic Auto Extrication concentrating on problem solving and using advanced tools. NFPA Equipment Required: Full PPE, Eye Protection Rope Rescue Awareness / Low Angle Operations (Jr.) Instructor: Rodney Winter (Charleston FD) Low-angle Rope Rescue is intended to address specific low-angle rope rescue techniques as outlines in the operations level of NFPA 1670 as well as the rope requirements in Rescue Technician of NFPA Topics Include: rope-rescue knots, lowering and raising systems, simple and compound mechanical-advantage systems, safety lines, ladder gins for high-point rescue, and patient packaging. Equipment Required: Helmet, Gloves and Boots Arson I Arson Detection for the Responder (Jr.) Instructor: Paul Gill (WV State Fire Marshal s Office & Institute VFD) This National Fire Academy (NFA) course introduces beginning-level fire cause and determination, basic scene investigation, evidence collection, and elements required to prove arson. This class is a requirement for Fire Officer I certification. Firefighter Survival Tactics Instructor: Donald Longerbeam (Resa VIII) This will provide the firefighter with skills and the knowledge to effective self-rescue during adverse emergency conditions that may occur on the fire ground. Areas to be covered include Mayday procedures, SCBA emergencies, disorientation emergencies, and emergency escape techniques. 8 practical skill stations will teach the firefighter how to call for a Mayday, escape a hostile environment by breaching, escaping out a window, and escaping out a window or opening using a personal rescue rope, and much more. Pre-Requisites: Firefighter I or Basic Firefighting Equipment Required: Full Turnout Gear and SCBA w/ Spare Bottle Introduction to Technical Rescue (Jr.) Instructor: Scott Chinn (Ripley VFD) It is designed to teach rescuers the basics of the nine technical rescue disciplines their basic operations and the hazards associated with each. The course will also instruct the students on site operations, victim management, and ropes and rigging-foundational knowledge for all nine disciplines. After completing the class, the student will meet the awareness level in the following nine rescue disciplines: Confined Space, Dive Rescue, Rope Rescue, Structural Collapse Rescue, Surface Water Rescue, Sub Terrain Rescue, Trench Rescue, Vehicle Extrication, and Wilderness Rescue. Flood Fight Operations Instructor: Larry Allen This course is for emergency managers, public works officials, levee district representatives, and others responsible for planning, preparing, and managing a response to a flood. Using a combination of lectures, discussions, activities, and exercises, the course will take participants through the complete process from well before the flood to clean up afterwards. Officials from every community at risk of flooding should take this training. Equipment Required: Outdoor Appropriate PPE

(March 7 & 8, 2009) 126 Sun urday & 127 Sun urday & 128 Sun 6p 9p Weekend 129 Sun urday & 130 Sun 6p 10p Weekend Emergency Vehicle Operations Course Instructor: Tom Miller (Sissonville VFD) This VFIS course is a combination classroom and practical skills training about emergency vehicle operations. Safety, legal aspects, inspection, and driver responsibilities are covered. Both written and practical examinations are administered. This class meets WV State Fire Commission and State EMS initial driver training requirements/recommendations. The course is designed to meet DOT and NFPA standards. Pre-Requisites: Valid Drivers License Equipment Required: Apparatus to Drive in Course Air Bag Rescue (Jr.) Instructor: Kevin Clendenin (Chief Clendenin VFD) This course is intended to familiarize students with use of low and high-pressure air bags in various rescue situations. Equipment Required: Full Turnout Gear Wilderness Search and Rescue Awareness / Operations (Jr.) Instructor: Chad Cox (Mullens VFD & HealthNet V) This course is designed to provide the participants with the core knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform search and rescue operations in a wilderness environment. A heavy focus is placed on the need for the Incident Command System, safety, search team coordination and communication(s), PPE, search techniques, land/air navigation, and practical skill exercises. NOTE: This Class Begins day Evening at 6:00 P.M. Equipment Required: Outdoor Appropriate PPE NIMS ICS-300 (Intermediate Incident Command System) (Jr.) Instructor: John Smoot (Teays Valley VFD) This course provides training on and resources for personnel who require advanced application of the Incident Command System (ICS). The target audience includes all individuals who may assume a supervisory role in expanding incidents. Pre-Requisites: ICS-100 & ICS-200 Wildland Firefighting I-100, S-190, S-130 (Jr.) Instructor: Tom Oxley (WV Division of Forestry) The I-100 (Introduction to ICS) course is module addressing the ICS organization, basic terminology, and common responsibilities. S-190 (Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior) is a course that provides instruction in the primary environmental factors that affect the start and spread of wildfire, and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. The S- 130 (Firefighting Training) course is designed to provide entry-level firefighters practical skills. Every student that completes this class will receive Nomex Shirt & Pants, hardhat and gloves. NOTE: This Class Begins day Evening at 6:00 P.M. Equipment Required: Outdoor Appropriate PPE

VFIS Intersection Safety & Rollover Prevention (Jr.) Instructor: Tom Miller (Sissonville VFD) This special program stresses eight guidelines that may help reduce the number and severity of intersection accidents and is intended for emergency service organizations responding to incidents in both department and personal vehicles. Emergency Vehicle Rollover Prevention will also be addressed in this seminar. Weekend Two urday Only (March 14, 2009) 210 Cost: $30 urday 211 Cost: $30 Sun urdy Bomb Technician Assistant Instructor: Keith Vititoe (Kanawha County Sheriff s Department) The student will become familiar with the basic operations and equipment of an active bomb and/or hazardous device team. Responder students will gain basic knowledge that will allow them to assist on scene of emergencies involving hazardous devices. Responding to Propane Emergencies (Jr.) Instructor: Thomas Peal (Fayetteville VFD & Ret. Lt. Beckley FD) This class will discuss how to safely respond to propane emergencies and covers standards, codes, and regulations; physical properties and characteristics of propane; container design and construction features; bulk transportation design and construction features; general emergency response procedures; tactical response guidelines for propane emergencies. Weekend Two Only (March 15, 2009) 212 Cost: $30 6p-10p Clandestine Meth Laboratory Awareness (Jr.) Instructor: Mike Oakley (Lt. Kanawha County Sheriffs Dept. & Sissonville VFD) This course is for the benefit of first responders who may encounter a clandestine methamphetamine lab process. This course will cover the components of the lab process, elements of risk, hazards associated, and understanding the risks associated with the components of the clandestine labs along with protecting yourself and others.

Pleasant VFD) This course provides responders with a comprehensive understanding of accidents involving vehicles and machinery incidents. This course teaches the responder how to recognize the hazard, access the victim, and stabilize the victim and the proper procedures for retrieval. Realistic training evolutions using the latest in equipment and techniques assure student retention of this material. This course will give the student practical experience operating extrication equipment on heavy equipment such as large trucks and multiple vehicles. Pre-Requisites: Vehicle Machinery Search and Rescue Operations Equipment Required: Full PPE, Gloves, Eye Protection Rope Rescue Operations High Angle Instructor: Rodney Winter (Charleston FD) High-angle rope rescue is intended to address specific high-angle rope rescue techniques as outlined in the operations level of NFPA 1670 as well as the rope requirements in Rescue Technician of NFPA The advanced skills taught in this course include multiple-point anchor systems, compound mechanical-advantage systems, ascending and descending fixed-rope systems, highline systems, and victim movement. Pre-Requisites: Rope Rescue Operations Low Angle Equipment Required: Helmet, Gloves and Boots Arson II Scene Examination Instructor: Mark Lambert (WV State Fire Marshal s Office) This course will show the student how to investigate an actual fire scene, reconstruct the scene, take trace samples, document, diagram and photograph the scene, determine and prove what started the fire. Pre-Requisites: Arson I Equipment Required: Helmet, Gloves and Boots Hazardous Materials Operations (Jr.) Instructor: Dan Taaffe (St. Albans FD) This course provides students with an understanding of ways to confine, contain, or divert a hazardous materials release using defensive methods, such as damming, diking, and diverting. The student will have the opportunity for hands-on experience in building different types of containment systems and setting up decontamination areas. Pre-Requisites: Hazardous Materials Awareness Advanced Structural Firefighting Instructor: Glenn Whittington (Buffalo VFD) This class is designed for the fire fighter that has had basic fire training and who wishes to increase his/her fire fighter skills. Class will cover advanced suppression techniques in a live burn situation. This class covers tank truck anatomy and design, damage assessment, repair, and transloading. This class meets NFPA 472, Chapter 6, Private sector specialist employee A and 29CFR (q) requirements. Pre-Requisites: Hazardous Materials Technician CPR / AED / Aid Instructor Program Instructor: Kim Morgan (Kanawha County EMS & Sissonville VFD) The American Heart Association (AHA) Core Instructor Course will prepare participants to serve as Basic Life Support Instructors for AHA CPR and Aid Courses. The course will cover topics such as effectively presenting core learning content, facilitating group discussions, developing insights into leaner characteristics and needs, and more. Pre-Requisites: Current HealthCare Provider Card Textbooks & Materials: $75.00 NIMS ICS-400 (Intermediate Incident Command System) (Jr.) Instructor: John Smoot (Teays Valley VFD) This course provides training on and resources for personnel who require advanced application of the Incident Command System (ICS). The target audience for this course is senior personnel who are expected to perform in a management capacity in an Area Command or Multi-agency Coordination Entity. Pre-Requisites: NIMS ICS-300 ATV Search and Rescue Instructor: Steve Conrad (Racine VFD) This course is designed to teach firefighters and emergency responders the basic skills necessary to perform search and rescue operations using ATVs. day students will learn basic search tactics and resources, land navigation skills, patient packaging and basic tracking.
