Commodores Comments Earlier this month the Icebreaker Fishing Contest unfortunately had to be cancelled due to the weather and the unknown state of the bar post flood. Many thanks to the members who cleaned up the ramp after the flood it was a mammoth task. Our Mid Winter Dinner and Dance was a great success, the food was great, Craven Nobel had the dance floor full most of the night, and his Talent Spots proved a lot of fun. The weather has been playing havoc with our web cameras lately but we are working on getting them up and running again. Clubs and Pubs throughout the country are struggling to keep their patronage and our Social Committee are working on some different attractions to draw you, as members, into the club. Sunday afternoon live music is on the 4 th Sunday in the month and starts 26 th July 4 7 pm, we are featuring easy listening music that you can sing along to or dance if you so wish. So for the next 3 months come along on the 4 th Sunday in the month. The kitchen will be open and Mick with have a blackboard menu of light meals. Then there is the Crazy Bingo which is on Friday 31 st July 8pm. This is fun social Bingo, not the eyes down and concentrating type but great fun all the same. There are also two members draws, Friday and Saturday night. The Friday night draw is $450 and Saturday has come up to $375. You must be in the club to claim the money. A big thank you must go to Tracey who has organised the Super 15 Rugby pics competition. This has been a huge success with so much interest created amongst our regulars. This is our last newsletter before the AGM, this year being held on Saturday 29 th August. There are positions available on the executive and if you think that you would like to become involved in the running of your club put your name forward. Nomination forms are in the club and also in this magazine. John Haverkamp Commodore 3

Fishing Report The chances for fishing have not been great in the last few months and unfortunately the week we planned the Ice Breaker Fishing Contest was not a good one. To compensate, Fishing Committee are planning to put in another contest early summer. We will keep you informed of dates. Several boats have been out in the past week reporting spinney s being the fish of the day but some good sized Gurnard have also been caught. The recent flood has changed the river mouth, sand bars have moved and we recommend that boaties take particular care and take your time to read the water before making your crossing. Gary Eccleston Fishing Co- ordinator Pool Our annual Pool Pairs Social Competition is coming up on 1 st August and is open to any MMBC member. This is the fourth year this competition has been run and competition is always great. The entry form is in this magazine and also at the Bar and needs to be in by 26 th July. The first of our two 12 week competitions have come to an end and over the past 2 months we have had some very keen inter club games with the Palmerston North RSA, Foxton RSA and Palmerston North Cossi Club. Our next inter club game is with the Manawatu Coast Guard on 30 th July Yours in Pool, Geoff 4

What's new in the kitchen & bar? We have a new promotion running in the bar from 24 July to 29 August on Friday and Saturday nights only. Come and enjoy DB Export Gold or DB Export 33 handle or DB Export Citrus 2% or 0% bottle and get a stamp on your card by Tracey. Once you have 6 stamps, you go in the draw to win a Charmate Charcoal Smoker & Grill - kindly donated by DB. The will be drawn on Saturday 29 August. We have lots of low alcohol wine & beer options and plenty of non- alcohol options available in the bar if you are driving, so don't sit at home, come along to the club and enjoy a laugh and chat at the new bar leaners and try out the new bar stools. There is lots happening in the kitchen also. Friday night is fresh fish Friday where you can enjoy the weeks fresh fish either battered, crumbed or panfried. Mick also has some awesome specials on Fridays and Saturdays, so come along and try a curry, butter chicken or the ever popular lamb shanks or seafood chowder - both of these always sell out. There are different specials each weekend for you to try. Saturday continues to have the roast, which is always a favourite. The lucky membership draws are running on Friday and Saturday nights, and both are starting to get higher. You have to be there to win. See you at the club. Julie Foxton Lucky Members Draw Now at $375 drawn each Saturday night 5

Crazy Bingo Fun, Social Games Come for a laugh Friday 31 st July 8pm Can anyone help The Coley Street Kindergarten is decorating its playground with a nautical theme. They are having trouble sourcing an old dinghy about 2-3 metres long for the sand pit. If you have one that you would like to donate or that is cheap please ring Sheree on between 9am and 3 pm. As it is a static display it does not have to be seaworthy but it does need to be safe no sharp edges etc. 6

Hi Boaties Winter is here with the colder days and the fishing has slowed down. The markers are not lined up at present so you need to read the water to see where the channel is, there is also a big sand bar just before you go around the corner to the bar. We hope to get the markers lined up again sometime soon. Our unit was called out to assist two people from their home that was flooded in June, the jet ski was used, Dean and Leighton did a great job getting the people out being it was at night and the current was very strong, the callout was 1.30am and the guys got home at 6.30am was a long night but the couple were very grateful as you can imagine. We have just purchased two new props for our Rescue Vessel to improve the towing capabilities of larger vessels and submerged vessels across the bar. Coastguard New Zealand run the Winter Lottery tickets which have been sent out to you in the mail, $3 from each of those tickets still gets shared around all units. Our Lottery tickets that we sell ourselves are due out November these are the ones where $7 comes back to our unit. We also had our annual swimming training at Levin pools, everybody passed the tests once again. Below a photo of us doing the Crocodile swim, you interlock your feet around each other and move your arms in a swimming motion and you can get along rather quickly. Don t forget your life jackets and be careful on the bar Safe boating Eddie Bambery 9
