Hall Aquatic Center Annual Presentation FY2016 Background: The Board of Commissioners has requested an update on the Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center. Discussion: Attached is the FY2016 Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center Annual Presentation. The Parks & Recreation staff will present this update on March 7, Conclusion/Recommendation: None

3 Purpose To provide an overview of Park and Recreation s Aquatic financials, activities, and accomplishments for the 2016 Fiscal Year. 2

6 Hall Hours Hours of Operation: Monday-Friday 6am 9pm Saturday 8am 9pm Sunday 8am 8pm On average the Hall is open to the public 100 hours per week, 340 days a year. Closing only for Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and our annual cleaning. 5

7 Hall Staffing Merit Employees Aquatic Supervisor Directs the overall operation of Calvert County s Aquatics Division to include the year round Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center and the two seasonal venues, Cove Point Park Pool and Kings Landing pool. Aquatic Facility Manager Supervises the day to day operation of the Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center. Aquatics Coordinator Develops, plans, and supervises a comprehensive aquatics program for the year round Edward T. Hall Aquatic Center and seasonal Cove Point Pool. Office Specialist I The Office Specialist I supervises the Edward T. Hall s front counter staff in support of the venues day to day operation. 2 Custodians One daytime custodian and one evening custodian 6

9 Staff Training Over the past year the lifeguards and pool managers, as a whole, made over 350 water rescues and responded to numerous medical emergencies which included; seizures, shock, diabetic emergency, head trauma, heat exhaustion, and multiple: abrasions, contusions, and lacerations. o o o o All Aquatic staff, at a minimum, receive CPR and AED training. In addition to their initial 30 hours of training all Lifeguards and pool managers attend 8-10 hours of in-service training per month. Water Safety Instructors attend 4 hours of training per month. New this year: o Administering Emergency Oxygen o Nonviolent Crisis Intervention o Active Shooter Moving forward all full-time staff members will receive 50 hours of Emergency Medical Responder training. 8

Certifications Courses Lifeguarding CPR/AED, & First Aid Water Safety Instructor Babysitting NEW - Emergency Oxygen Therapy NEW - Lifeguard Management NEW GuardStart Junior Lifeguarding Camp NEW Pool Operators Course NEW Longfellow s WHALE Tales Longfellow WHALE Tales is taught to raise children s awareness of safe behavior in, on and around the water. Private Lessons We provide one-on-one lessons for all ages and abilities with certified American Red Cross Instructors. 9

25 Moving Forward Future Goals Safety must be everyone s number one priority! Financial goal - Aquatics to be Self Sustaining at all Venues. Analyze existing fees Analyze hours of operation Increase programming Continue to build partnerships with local businesses and companies Continue to scrutinize budget Increase advertising and marketing Train and support the operational staff Keep things fresh Provide our users with a safe, enjoyable, clean facility that meets or exceeds their expectations. Continue to excel at customer service. Continue to ensure facilities meet or exceed local, state, and federal regulations Major changes coming. Balance public needs vs. programming and rental space Keep them happy, Keep them coming back! Customer service is key at all levels. 24
