3 FROM THE EO S DESK Hi all welcome to another addition to our newsletter. It has been another busy month with the Australian Age Championships; well done to those swimmers (and to the Team Managers who did a great job looking after them) that competed you did us proud. The Arafura Games have been and gone and were the best Games ever for Swimming! A huge thank you has to go to our President Clare and also to Tracey Netherway who were the driving force behind a great crew of volunteers who work tirelessly to get the Arafura events off the ground. The pool events started on the 10 th May and continued until the 12 th and the Open Water Event were at Lake Bennett on Wednesday the 13 th. Congratulation Team NT you did a great job, I especially liked the AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE call after the New Zealanders Haka. One of the big highlights was the relays, you guys did magnificent performances. I also liked the medal ceremony after the Men s with the relay team from Papua New Guinea singing Advance Australia Fair like locals. Stephen Hollis joined us on the 27 th April to take over the Indigenous Sport Program he comes to us with an amazing background which includes working with Indigenous youths and aquatics, he hit the ground running with a Sport Development Meeting in Queensland on the 28 th these meetings gave us a chance to talk to the other Development teams all around Australia and find out what other states are doing with not only Indigenous development but also with other programs such as JX. We are also happy to announce that Swimming has retained a place at the NTIS (Northern Territory Institute of Sport) for the next 4 years. This is a great opportunity for our swimmers to help them achieve their dreams for the future. We are looking forward to working with the NTIS to develop swimmers to reach their full potential. 3

5 Introducing the Office Staff MEET OUR NEW INDIGENOUS SUPPORT OFFICER Hi All my name is Stephen Hollis. I settled here in Darwin in 2004 after many years of adventures in remote corners of the world. Shortly after arriving in Darwin I began working with the Indigenous students at Kormilda College as the recreational officer for the boarding community. This Experience has given me some valuable insights to the indigenous youth culture of today and personnel satisfaction that i could take home in return for making a difference to these young adults lives. The Job at Kormilda College led me to work with the YMCA of the top end with whom I eventually became the pool operation co-ordinator of Palmerston, A role which still heavily involved working with young people in the public sector. Wanting to make a further difference i enrolled in the teacher of swimming course with Austswim, came into contact with the swimming community and went on to take on the role of Indigenous sport development officer here at the SNTI office. I look forward to working with this small group of people that are as passionate as i am about swimming, health and education. 5
6 HAVING A LOOK AT WHAT WE RE DOING Current SNTI programs -Australian Age Championships This years Australian Age championships was held in Sydney Olympic Park, with 7 of our swimmers heading down to represent their clubs and the Northern Territory on the national stage. Most of the swimmers swam fantastic times at this year s Nationals bringing home many PB s and in the case of Stevie Nibbs and Robert Gerlach, Finals rankings. whilst the swimmers were taking care of business at the pool Greg Fuller and Virginia Burrows were working their buts off keeping our kids fed, rested and comfortable and on time with their base of operation s, 2 3 bedroom apartments high up in the Meridan Hotel in Sydney s CBD -Arafura Games A superb event for all of our kids who represented the NT at this meet. This was definitely on e of the best NT performances we have seen to date, with fantastic performances across the board. Highlights include the relay wins by both the Men s and Women s teams, Rachael McLean s sub 2 hour 10KM swim (1Hr 58min) and the 49 records Broken (Arafura, BBNT and All comers) -Indigenous Program Our newest team member Stephen Hollis has hit the ground running getting in contact with the many remote communities who are involved in the Sport development program. This week Stephen is in the Alice region facilitating meeting with the key stakeholders in Areyonga, Yuendamu and Kintore to reorganise the program in the region and next week he will be heading to Wadeye to participate in the Wadeye sports carnival. -Teams Short course (Sept) A team of 9 swimmers have been selected from those who nominated. using results gained between NT Open & Age and Arafura. These swimmers will be heading to Canberra in September to represent the NT against other state teams in a competition where teams sill be handicapped according to size. 6

12 ASADA Many of our young athlete got a real surprise on day 3 of the Arafura games competition when several of our team members were pulled aside after their races and told that they were going to have to perform a drug test. The testing process involves the collection of a urine sample from the athlete which will be tested onsite and sent away for further testing in specialist labs. From the moment that an athlete is singled out for testing the ASADA testers cannot let them out of their site until a sample is collected. This is so that they can ensure that there is no cheating going on. For one of our athletes at Arafura they had to be followed for almost and hour, around the team, at marshalling and to races, before they were able to supply a sample. When the sample is collected the athlete is required to be facing the tester as they fill the vile, again this is to make sure that no cheating can occur (it has happened). All athletes have the right to nominate a representative to accompany them to the doping control station. ASADA provides an up to date list of all banned substances and testing procedures on their webite GO CLUB PB Its that time of year again with the Australian Unity Go Club PB workbooks due in. To get a copy for your club to work through, visit the Swimming Australia Limited website and check out the section for clubs. 12
