1 Up Hill & Down Vale October Newsletter AIDA VALE ASTERS SWIMMING Presidents Prose: Blah blah etc etc (Oops should have deleted that!!! Ed.) October 2009 Welcome to the first newsletter featuring the Club s brand new logo. Lots of thought, discussion and effort has gone into redesigning the Club s image and I m sure you ll agree that it is gives us a fresh and distinctive look. Well done to all involved. Keep an eye out and place an order soon for a new Club t-shirt featuring the design. Bathers, caps and jackets will be offered in the near future as well. We have a valuable Stretching Clinic happening next Monday (12 th ) provided using some of the funds from the Healthway Grant we received earlier in the year. Stretching is an important part of our routine as we get older to maintain our flexibility and doing it safely is vital. Please come along and support this special event. The celebration of Anita s 90 th birthday last month was a lovely occasion and fitting recognition of her achievements. Thanks to Claire and Alan for opening their home to us all, to Elspeth for the amazing commemorative album we presented to Anita and to Marilyn for making the gorgeous cake. Likewise, I believe the bushwalk and breakfast was a fantastic morning combining exercise with fresh air, great food, friendship and fun. Thanks to Kim and Shelley for being our hosts and organising us so well (again!). Claire has plans well in hand for our Lake Leschenaultia Swim in November but will I m sure be calling on helpers for the day in the coming weeks. Please put up your hand to offer support in any way you can. Happy swimming in the meantime! Lesley Contact Details: President: Lesley Hart Ph: lesleyjane62@hotmail.com Secretary: Lynne Duncan Ph: lynne.duncan@oss.wa.gov.au Coach Don Reynolds Ph: milaroo@dodo.com.au Editor: Maggie Read margaret.read@det.wa.edu.au
2 SWIMMING NEWS, UPCOMING EVENTS ETC. The Club s Lake Leschenaultia will take place on Sunday 14 November. This year we are having a " Liquid " theme to our raffle for the Lake swim. I'd like to put together various baskets based around a drink of some description. For example it could be wine, tea, coffee, sports drinks, fruit juices, beer or any other you can think of. Along with the drink itself I'd like to add appropriate accompaniments. So in a tea basket we could add sugar, a cup and saucer, biscuits, napkins etc. This is a great opportunity to use your imagination and, for those who'd rather not, I'm more than happy to accept $5 to $10 ( or more ) and spend it on your behalf. You can catch me at the pool or contact me with any queries on or at gebinckes@iinet.net.au. Elspeth is coordinating the raffle so she can take any of the above items off your hands. This is main swimming event hosted by our club this year and it is usually one of the most popular events on the swimming calendar. Car Rally : Ian Stewart is again organising the car rally which will be held on 25 October. Look out for details on the board at the pool or flyer in your in box! Stretching Clinic: (Should provide some good photos for the next newsletter!) Come along on Monday, 12 October and learn how to do it properly.. With some of our Healthway Grant we have organised for Cody Gilham from Moz Quinn Physiotherapy to conduct a clinic with practical tips for appropriate and safe stretching for senior swimmers. The clinic will run from with some time to swim after if you feel the need. Moz Quinn, Physiotherapy 61 Canning Road Kalamunda 6076 Ph
3 Congratulations to the following members who are having birthdays this month: Leisa Garner 2 nd Peter Den Boer 6 th Elaine Fraser 13 th Particia DalleNogare 18 th Rosemary Gojanovich 20 th Alan Ware 28th SWIMMING POOL 25M OR 50M? There seemed to be some confusion in the last committee minutes about the length of the pool at St Brigids, 25 m or 50 m. Does it really matter, because opposite is the pool to do laps in! It is located in San Alfonso del Mar in Chile, this artificial lagoon and swimming pool is eight hectares in size and contains an incredible 250,000 cubic metres of water. One lap equals one kilometre equals one training session! At the moment it is the largest pool in the world, but apparently an even bigger one is planned for Dubai might check it out next year!! Coming Social Events: 25 October is the date to mark for the Car Rally being organised by Ian Stewart. Apparently last year s was a great success so grab your compass, GPS and come join in the fun of getting lost!!! More details will be ed and on the notice board at the pool.
