3 Recreation Casses Rec Cass Information: (858) (858) No casses: Juy 3, 4, 5 The Ocean is our payground, sort of... This beautifu resource on campus gives us the opportunity to participate in surf casses, Scuba casses, open water swim casses, tide poo tours, beach jogs, boogie boarding and a myriad of others way to froic. It s aways there for us, sometimes a passport to adventure, sometimes just a peacefu pace to go and chi. With the rights of having this wonderfu resource as part of our campus environment aso comes some responsibiities. We have to step in and be stewards for our partner in fun and be aware of the rues of engagement. Here s a quick ist of things to be aware of when using our beach: Swim or surf with a buddy. Pack out everything you pack in. Pick up extra trash you come across; the critters can t do it so it s up to you. Don t hang out directy under the ciffs, they are unstabe. If caught in a rip current, swim sideways unti free, don t swim against the current s pu. Don t bring gass containers or acohoic beverages to the beach. No dogs or pets aowed. UCSD s beach is part of the Scripps Coasta Reserve. No coecting of pants, animas, artifacts, shes or rocks is aowed. We are proud to announce our partnership with the Surfrider Foundation in estabishing a UCSD chapter. Through our Surfrider chapter we wi give the UCSD community an opportunity to be advocates for and stewards of our beach environs, addressing such issues as: water quaity, beach access, beach and surf spot preservation, sustaining marine and coasta ecosystems and beach ceaniness. This eve wi mark the beginning of true ocomotion skis and adds to sef-hep and basic rescue skis. Participants shoud be abe to foat on their backs and fronts, kick and gide. We wi work on entering and exiting the water, effective spotting for navigation, reaxing in the open water and modifications you need to make to your stroke. This cass is set up in a swim partner environment so you wi never be swimming aone. You shoud fee comfortabe swimming 500 yards in the poo using freestye, backstroke and breaststroke. If you have fins and/or a wetsuit, you can bring them aong. First cass meets at the grassy area of La Joa Cove. Come earn how to surf, right by campus at Scripps Pier! This comprehensive introduction to surfing wi teach you the fundamenta skis of the sport, in addition to understanding ocean conditions, safety and proper etiquette. Cassroom, and and water-based instruction is provided, and participants can take the Campus Shutte or MTS Bus directy to surf cass from campus! Surfboards are provided for cass use. 7 Scuba Basic certification, advanced, speciaty and eadership eve courses eading to PADI certification. Cassroom and poo meetings are on UCSD or SIO campus. Mandatory orientation meetings (a casses) are at Ocean Enterprises, 7710 Baboa Ave. (turn eft at first ight east of I-805). The foowing requirements appy to a courses: Be in good heath as defined by PADI Medica Form and verified by your doctor. Be abe to swim 200 yards continuousy and foat/tread water for 10-minutes. Fitness eve requires carrying 55 bs down beach and swim 200 yards for each ocean session. Have cear understanding of written and spoken Engish to demonstrate adequate knowedge of course materia. Attend a cassroom, poo and ocean meetings. Compete a course requirements. Students need to be punctua to a casses and respectfu of buddy procedures & compiant with a safety guideines. Students must demonstrate appropriate decision-making and preparedness for underwater activity. Students are responsibe for their own transportation to and from the dive store to pick up renta gear each week and to meet at off campus ocations for orientation and ocean sessions. Cass dives may be reschedued due to incement weather or poor water quaity. Individua make-ups are $60 per poo session or ocean dive. Basic Open Water Certification Four-week basic certification course trains students in safe diving practices. In addition to mandatory swim tryouts & orientation, cass incudes 3 cassroom meetings, 3 poo sessions and 4 ocean dives. No more than eight students per instructor in water sessions. Maximum depth: 60 feet. Fees: $275 incudes books, certification, and a Scuba renta gear. NO refunds after first poo session. (A refunds are minus a book kit of $60). Poo session incudes theory and skis review, new gear famiiarization, advanced work on buoyancy and trim, and night-dive accimatization. Five ocean dives incude Navigation, Deep, and three eectives chosen from: Night, Boat, Underwater Naturaist, Fish Identification, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Wreck and other speciaties. Leve 4 - Ages 5 and up Students in this eve must be abe to swim 15 yards of freestye and 10 yards of backstroke and eementary backstroke. Endurance is increased. The breaststroke kick and arms are introduced as we as dophin kick and treading water. 50 minute sessions. Leve 5 - Ages 5 and up Students in this eve must be abe to swim 25 yards of freestye and backstroke, 15 yards of eementary backstroke, and 10 yards of breaststroke kick. They must aso be abe to tread water for 1 minute. In this eve, strokes are continued for distance, the breaststroke is refined, and butterfy and diving from the board are introduced. 50 minute sessions. Leve 6 - Ages 5 and up Students enroed in this cass must be abe to swim 50 yards freestye, 50 yards of backstroke, 25 yards of the eementary backstroke, 10 yards of dophin kick and 25 yards of breaststroke. Butterfy is refined in this cass. The focus of this cass is poishing strokes in order to swim with greater ease, efficiency, and power over greater distances.
