3 from the oval office High appeal for new venue The official opening of Highgate Recreation Reserve this weekend marks a new venue for football in Victoria. As we join the national tribute for our fallen Anzac heroes on this historic weekend, Victorian football welcomes an exciting new chapter with the official opening of Craigieburn s Highgate Recreation Reserve. The $10 million sports complex, a partnership involving Hume City Council, AFL Victoria, AFL, State Government and land developers Stocklands, heralds a new dawn for football in north-west Melbourne. All involved are to be congratulated for their vision, commitment and support for developing a facility that is unique in so many ways. Such an investment can not be understated. The facility presents a wonderful opportunity for all tiers of football, stretching from local team Craigieburn Eagles, to TAC Cup side Calder Cannons. VFL team Coburg Tigers, and their AFL-affiliate Richmond, will also benefit through the state-of-the-art facility. The Highgate establishment will serve the Essendon District Football league, TAC Cup, VFL and AFL, highlighting its value as a community centre. Further to this, adjoining the main football field, which mirrors the dimensions of the MCG, is another ground that is designed to be available for the community, in particular junior football. In as much, Highgate Recreation Reserve embraces football from grassroots to the elite level. The development of the Highgate facility has been as rapid as it has been stunning. In the space of little more than three years, a green field site has been developed into a marvelous complex that taps into the evolving demographic dynamics of Melbourne s urban expansion. Along with Casey Fields, which opened just four years ago, AFL Victoria is well placed to serve aspiring footballers well into the future. As time goes on, Highgate Reserve s profile will further blossom with its potential to host NAB Cup games, preseason AFL games and AFL Under-16 and 18 National Championship fixtures. Its lighting strength also provides the opportunity for night games. During season 2010, the Calder Cannons and Coburg Tigers will play a combined total of 11 home games at Highgate, also functioning as the offfield headquarters for the Cannons. Further ground development into the future will bolster the current infrastructure, with additional seating around the field to be added among a number of other trimmings to truly make it a fan-friendly venue. The official opening of Highgate Recreation Reserve coincides with Coburg Tigers hosting in the now traditional Anzac Day match. Anzac Day is a significant day on our national calendar, a day where we can proudly reflect on the selfless acts of so many of our forefathers. Football recognises and honours the importance of the Anzacs. Lest we forget.
