March 2016 Annual General Meeting Notice The ACT Masters Squash Association AGM will be held at 10pm on Monday 4 April 2016 at the Woden club rooms.

As in previous years, Jenny Moylan and Mike De Nardi will be providing the supper at Woden, so a huge thanks to them both in advance.

1 March 2016 Annual General Meeting Notice The ACT Masters Squash Association AGM will be held at 10pm on Monday 4 April 2016 at the Woden club rooms. As is normal for the AGM evening, your match for the evening will comprise three games only (not best of three) so that people at Dickson can get to Woden and the meeting can start on time. As in previous years, Jenny Moylan and Mike De Nardi will be providing the supper at Woden, so a huge thanks to them both in advance. The committee numbers have dwindled in the last couple of years and we are certainly looking for some new faces to join us. Nomination forms are on the notice boards at the courts so if you are keen, please get your name down, or you can nominate on the night. If you are interested in being involved in the committee but don t know what it entails, please talk to one of the committee members at the courts prior to the AGM. By Scott Caban Rashes 2016 Bega Challenge April 2016 will mark the eighth anniversary of the Rashes, otherwise known as the Bega Challenge. Way back in 2009, when ACT MSA was holding the March Tournament and also celebrating our thirtieth year as a Masters organisation, there was a dedicated band of travelling squashies from Bega who came up for the tournament decked out in new uniforms celebrating the ACTMSA thirty year anniversary. First thing to say is, they all looked the part and it was still early on the Saturday morning when orders were hastily being placed by Canberra players for one of the new Bega shirts. Later that day, over a few quiet ales, a plan was hatched to have an annual event between Bega Squash and ACTMSA, hosted alternatively in Bega and Canberra. Therefore it came to pass that later on 2009 a merry band of about 20 ACTMSA players travelled to Bega for the inaugural event, which Bega managed to win due to the home court advantage. At the completion of the event, which coincided with the Ashes being played in England, the winning President was awarded the Rashes trophy. Why the Rashes? Bega held a ceremonial burning in a 44 gallon drum at the back of the courts of a number of squash items including wrist bands, head bands, a couple of balls and an old wooded racquet. All of this was duly collected and deposited into the urn as the Rashes. Competition for the Rashes is fierce and is played as a timed event. Four courts at a time have a 5 minute warm up and then 20 minutes of squash, point a rally. The Rashes will be played at Weston Creek this year. When Bega have confirmed their numbers for the event a call to arms will go out to ACTMSA players and hopefully we can re take the coveted urn that so rightly belongs with us! By Scott Caban

2 ACT Masters Championship By Mark Young (President) It feels like it was only yesterday when the 2016 ACT Masters March Tournament finished. For those of you who couldn't join us, it was another fantastic weekend, with 120 players participating in our annual March Tournament. From the feedback I've received, everybody had a great time, with a fantastic atmosphere at both Woden and Weston Creek courts, great food (prepared by Jenny and Michael) and the regular BBQ on Sunday being run by Richard at Woden and some great squash. We also had a very 'memorable' night, cruising on Lake Burley Griffin on the Saturday night. While there were a few quirky things that happened, I'm sure it will be something that will be remembered by the 105 of you who joined us on the night. Also presented were clocks to the players who have turned 70 or are turning 70 this year. Congratulations to these young people, Jeanette Williamson and Adele Slater. Bathurst and Tournament Squash By John Forrest As with the ACT Masters March tournament, it should come as no surprise that all the other states and territories also host Masters Squash

A few years ago the ACT regularly had up to twenty regular attendees at these events sometimes more. Alas, as squash numbers decline, so do the numbers at tournaments.

Yes, they are held over the weekend and it helps if you can get away on the Friday (and even come back on the Monday) but hey, it s a great way to spend a weekend.

After the long Christmas break the squash calendar is chockers at this time of the year.

The Bathurst Tournament attracted 90 entries of which around a dozen were from Canberra/Goulburn. The tournament was ability based with 12 grades and a mixed gender format.

Tournament, with the same format as Bathurst but point a rally scoring, attracted 84 entrants with, sadly, only 4 from the ACT.

And unlike the ACT, who only has the one March event, both NSW and Victoria hold regular Masters Tournaments throughout the year. A few years ago the ACT regularly had up to twenty regular attendees at these events sometimes more. Alas, as squash numbers decline, so do the numbers at tournaments. This is rather sad as they are such good fun! Yes, they are held over the weekend and it helps if you can get away on the Friday (and even come back on the Monday) but hey, it s a great way to spend a weekend. Sure, you re up for two nights in a motel and a tank or two of fuel but the squash is cheap as chips and you ll meet loads of new squash people who are probably just as nice as you! There were 8 Divisions (or Sections as Vic Masters like to call them) Runners Up Heather Campbell Div 8 Cons Rhonda Fry Div 8 (Thank god for the girls as both Richard Fry and John Forrest fell apart like buttercups) As mentioned above, the number of Masters attending tournaments is in steep decline. I think we should be proactive in this and I would suggest ACT Masters appoint a Tournament Co ordinator to facilitate this. In the meantime, if anyone reading this article wishes to try a tournament, have a chat with either myself, Sue Parker, Karreen Watt, Richard or Rhonda Fry. You will not regret the experience or be disappointed and you may just be a winner!

5 Tribute to Ted Kaminski By Richard O Rourke RIP Ted Kaminski 12th March th February 2016 For those of you who knew Ted, it would have become obvious over time that he was a reserved and quiet a private person, and you could only get to know him over a long period of time, the one trait that would have stood out was that he loved his squash and in particular all the friends he made playing the game,.he and his wife Janella moved down from their home town of Newcastle, and not long after, Ted and later Janella began playing with the Dickson squash club in the summer competition of 1973 in D5, Ted would have been 26yo at the time, I m pretty sure he had been playing squash before then but given his entry playing level here in Canberra I don t think for very long. Nevertheless it didn t take Ted long to grasp the game and push his way forward and by spring 1977 he reached the dizzy heights of A5, at his peak he was playing consistently between A2 and A3 and that was back in the day when competition and squash numbers were prolific. Ted got involved organising squash as well, he joined the Dickson squash club committee in 1982 and progressed to Club President by 1993, here are some extracts from his presidents report on his re election to that position in July 1998 What makes a club special? Over the years Dickson has been blessed with many special people who have served at committee level and as voluntary helpers, this blend of individuals all very different personalities, have helped to foster enthusiasm, loyalty and a sense of mateship within the club, this has seen Dickson grow and become the largest and one of the most popular squash club s in Canberra, to be president of such a club for these last years and now in to 1999 is a privilege, the culmination was the annual club championship which again was a wonderful event..as we progress in to 1999 and beyond, remember.. You are the club Ted finally called it a day as President in 2001 and left an outstanding legacy that has been hard to emulate, of course Teds squash career didn t just end there, he was still heavily involved in competition squash, he left the SRA pennant competition for the greener pastures of Masters Squash where he played and competed not only at local level but took part in tournaments all around the country. There are many attributes that one can associate to Tom Cat but none better describe him as being just a good bloke I m sure that we all acknowledge that It was our pleasure to have known you Ted

You play against people who are similar standard and age, 35 39, 40 44, 45 49 etc. Teams Event 12 September to 16 September 2016 You are allocated a team by ACT Masters before you go to Darwin.

The team consist of 3 players who are similar standard. You will require an ACT Masters team uniform. If you do not have a uniform, please contact Alan Martin who will organise this for you.
