1 COACHING STAFF KATIE WEISMILLER HEAD COACH 14TH YEAR AT INDIANA 16TH YEAR AS HEAD COACH The winningest volleyball coach in Indiana University history in terms of victories, Katie Weismiller has completely changed the fortunes of the IU volleyball program during her 13-year tenure in Bloomington. Weismiller has led the Hoosiers to four appearances in the last 11 years, which includes an NCAA berth in 2002, when the Hoosiers nearly upset highly-regarded Texas during a first-round match at Tucson, Ariz. To say that Weismiller completely altered the fortunes of the program may be understating her accomplishments. Prior to her arrival in Bloomington in 1993, Indiana had never made an appearance in the sport of volleyball. Never before had the Hoosiers received as much as a single vote in the AVCA volleyball poll and not once had Indiana finished higher than fifth in Big Ten Conference play. Katie Weismiller has led the Hoosiers to all four of their berths. Indiana also claimed a pair of tourney wins during that time. With four NCAA tournament appearances since 1995, and the other aforementioned benchmarks achieved, the Hoosier head coach continues to raise the bar for the Indiana University volleyball program. To do so, Weismiller has established lofty objectives--both on and off the court--that mirror the IU Athletic Department's mission of preparing student-athletes for championship competition on the field, in the classroom and for life. In 2002, with only one senior on the roster, IU recorded a overall record, which marked Indiana's fifth winning season in six years. That season, an accompanying NCAA tournament invitation became Indiana's fourth such selection in Weismiller's tenure. Additionally, Christina Archibald etched her name into the Hoosiers' record book by breaking former IU standout Melissa Brewer's career kill mark in Archibald finished her career with 1,808 putaways. Meanwhile, Katie Pollom earned All-Big Ten honorable mention in To add to the successes of the campaign, Weismiller moved into first place on IU's career coaching victories list. In addition, because attendance at IU volleyball matches continues to increase, Weismiller and her staff have exhibited the ability to target and land several of the nation's top volleyball recruits during the past several years. Such detailed attention to recruiting should ensure the success of Weismiller's program for years to come. While on-the-court performance may be the ultimate measuring stick, Weismiller's squads have also earned a reputation for their impressive academic achievement. Additionally, her implementation of many new community relations initiatives has set the standard for outreach programs within the IU Athletics Department and throughout the Big Ten Conference. After dissecting Weismiller's successful coaching background, it isn't surprising that she has taken the Indiana volleyball program to new heights. One year prior to setting foot on the IU campus, Weismiller, as an assistant coach to Mary Wise at Florida, helped lead the Gators to the school's initial NCAA Final Four appearance. In 1992, the Gators won the East Regional prior to falling to UCLA, 3-0, in the national semifinals. One year earlier, she helped lead the UF squad to the South Regional finals, where the Gators lost on LSU's home court. In the two years that Weismiller spent as an assistant at Florida, the Gators posted a 69-7 overall record. Prior to her impressive stint in Gainesville, Weismiller gained invaluable head coaching experience during two seasons at Saint Louis University, where she compiled an overall record of She led the Billikens to the 1989 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship and presently maintains the best career winning percentage in school history (.676). While at Saint Louis, Weismiller also served as head coach of the school's softball team. Her softball charges finished the 1990 season as runners-up in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. For her efforts, she earned MCC Coach of the Year honors. Katie Weismiller is the winningest volleyball coach in terms of victories at Indiana with 188 triumphs in 13 seasons at the Hoosier helm. 2 COACHING STAFF Increased attendance has mirrored Indiana's improved on-court performance. Eight of the top 10 single-game attendance figures ever recorded at University Gymnasium, Indiana's on-campus volleyball home, have occurred during Weismiller's tenure. At Assembly Hall on Oct. 14, 1994, the biggest home crowd in IU volleyball history (1,740) watched the Hoosiers take three games from the Purdue Boilermakers. A fast-paced, interactive atmosphere at IU home matches has created a tough environment for opponents, as the Hoosiers have compiled a record at University Gym since the beginning of the 1996 campaign, the first year that IU played all of its games at that facility. In addition to on-the-court success, Weismiller's teams have earned a reputation for their presence in the Bloomington community and on campus. The IU volleyball program has participated in the Monroe County Adopt-A-Road program, picking up garbage and recyclable items along their adopted road in Bloomington. Other programs have included Read Across America, painting for Shelter, Inc., and the Hoosier Hitters, which are informal clinics for boys and girls ages 6-13 who are not yet in ninth grade. Weismiller has led the Hoosiers to winning seasons in five of the last nine years. In 2001, freshman Christina Archibald was named to the Big Ten All- Freshman team. It marked the third consecutive season that an IU freshman was named to the squad. In 2000, Weismiller strung together her fourth consecutive winning season, the first time the IU volleyball program had achieved such an accomplishment since The Hoosiers finished with an mark, despite starting four freshmen at times. In 1999, she coached IU to its third NCAA postseason tournament berth and watched as the squad advanced to the second round for the second consecutive year. The Hoosiers knocked off No. 16 Clemson on its home court in the opening round of the tournament, posting their second straight win over a top-20 team after closing out the regular season with a win over No. 20 Minnesota. The Hoosiers concluded the 1999 campaign with an overall record of and a final ranking of 27th in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches poll. Indiana's tournament run in 1999 came only one year after the Hoosiers reached the second round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history. The Hoosiers knocked off 24th-ranked Northern Iowa in the first round of the tournament before falling to Arkansas. Indiana finished the season with a record. The city of Bloomington and the IU community took notice of the Hoosiers' success, as Weismiller's squad played in front of three of the 10 largest crowds in University Gymnasium history that season. In 1997, Weismiller led her squad to victories in its first 15 outings to set a school record for most consecutive wins without a loss. With a 15-0 record and a No. 25 ranking, Indiana cracked the national polls for the first time in school history. Non-conference success certainly isn't alien to Weismiller's squads, as the Hoosiers got off to a 7-0 start in 2000 and won their first nine matches in The 1996 season saw Weismiller and the Hoosiers move into University Gymnasium on a permanent basis, while the 1995 campaign put Indiana on the volleyball map. After inheriting a team that had posted a 6-23 record in 1992 and a mark during the two years prior to her arrival in Bloomington, Weismiller led the Hoosiers to 27 wins in her first two seasons at the IU helm. However, it was her third season in Bloomington that served notice to the collegiate volleyball world. Picked to finish ninth in the 1995 Big Ten coaches preseason poll, the spirited Weismiller guided the Hoosiers to a 12-8 conference mark, the best Big Ten mark in school history. That same year, on Nov. 14, 1995, Indiana received votes in the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll for the initial time. IU went on to finish the season with a overall mark, its first 20-win season since Indiana also earned its first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament and Julie Flatley earned All-Big Ten honors. On Oct. 14, 1994, during Weismiller's second season in Bloomington, over 1,740 fans witnessed the Hoosiers defeat Purdue, 3-0. The crowd at Assembly Hall that day was the largest to attend an IU volleyball match in Bloomington. The very next night, IU posted a win over Illinois, the first victory over the Illini in more than a decade. One month earlier, IU had posted an upset victory over sixth-ranked Ohio State. In addition, Anne Eastman and Lynn Crawley earned All-Mideast Region accolades. Along with the individual recognition, the Hoosier record book has been rewritten during Weismiller's tenure. More than 50 school records have been broken during her 10 seasons. The school's all-time leaders in kills, assists, digs, service aces, block assists and total blocks have played during Weismiller's tenure. In 2003, Melissa Brewer concluded her amazing career, becoming the school's all-time block assists leader. For her efforts, Brewer was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection. Even more impressive may be the job Weismiller's athletes have done in the classroom. Amazingly, for the past four years IU volleyball players have earned Academic All-Big Ten on 38 occasions. Prior to her tenure at Saint Louis, Weismiller held the student assistant coaching position at the University of Texas-Arlington, her alma mater, from As both a coach and a player, she helped develop the UTA program into one of the nation's finest. As a player, Weismiller was a starting setter for four years and an All- Southland Conference selection. She was team captain from During her playing career, the Mavericks went from mediocrity to a top 20 ranking and earned two invitations to the NCAA tournament. Weismiller was also named All- South Region and the SLC Most Valuable Player in 1985 and Her freshman and sophomore seasons she received the Setter of the Year award. She was inducted into the school's Hall of Fame in Weismiller received a bachelor's degree in physical education from UTA in Currently, Weismiller serves as a voter on the USA Today/AVCA Coaches Top 25 Poll and was a member of and is a former chair for the AVCA All-America Committee. The mark also completed a one-year makeover after the previous three seasons witnessed the Salukis post an overall record of Affolder also mentored one of the all-time great players at SIU in Kristie Kemner. Kemner broke the SIU single-season standards for kills, attempts and digs in Along the way, Kemner also became the SIU career leader in all three categories. During Affolder s stay in Carbondale, the Salukis boasted one first team Academic All-American and three MVC all-conference selections. Affolder is no stranger to the state of Indiana, as he is a native of Decatur. He also has 10 years of coaching experience in the state, and nine years of club coaching experience. "I think this is a tremendous opportunity for myself professionally and for my family. Being an Indiana native, it's a great opportunity to get close to home to help build the IU program into the best program in the state and the Big Ten. 4 COACHING STAFF DOTTIE PORCH ASSISTANT COACH SECOND YEAR AT INDIANA Dottie Porch is in her second season as an assistant coach with the Hoosiers after spending three seasons as a co-coach of the Indy Juniors Volleyball Club and as a member of the production crew of the WTHR-TV NBC Channel 13 team in Indianapolis. Dottie was a huge plus to our program this past year, Indiana head coach Katie Weismiller said. She came in and took over coaching the middles. Our middles had one of the most productive years that we have had in the history of the program. Annie Moddrell, early on, was a national leader in blocks. Mandy Eberle then finished as a singleseason leader in blocks. Dottie was a huge force in that. The middle blockers experienced a banner year under Porch during her first season with the Hoosiers. Mandy Eberle broke both the single-season block assists and total blocks school standards in The Sussex, Wis., product Mandy Eberle recorded a record year with Porch at the helm of the middles. She set both the block assist and total block season standards. posted 140 block assists to surpass former IU standouts Cydryce Carter s 1997 tally and Katie Pollom s 2002 total of 139. Additionally, Eberle s 155 total blocks eclipsed Pollom s previous program standard of 153 set in Meanwhile, current Hoosier Annie Moddrell notched 106 block assists in 2005 to tie for ninth all-time in school history. Traditionally, we have been very strong with our middles and our blocking, and that continued this past year under Dottie, Weismiller said. One of the things that Dottie brings to the table with her experience as a player, she can step on the court, compete and play to bring the team to a higher level in practice. We have utilized that often this year, and will continue to do so again this coming fall. Furthermore, the Hoosiers accumulated 560 block assists on the year to tie the school record set in 2002 with a matching total of 560. Additionally, Indiana recorded the most total blocks in school history with 328, breaking the previous program best of 319 in "I have learned a lot in my first season as an assistant with the Indiana University volleyball team, Porch said. I think this team has a lot of potential, and we are working every day to bring in tremendous talent to put this program on the map. I think I had to do some adjusting this season, along with our incoming freshmen, to the fast pace of the game from a coaching aspect as well as getting used to the tough competition of the Big Ten. During her tenure with the Indy Juniors, Porch's 18-1 squad not only qualified for the 2004 USA Nationals, but also advanced every senior into the collegiate volleyball ranks. Indiana State, Marshall and Fordham are a few of the schools which signed student-athletes from her club team. Previously, her 17-1 team moved on to the 2003 AAU Nationals. Additionally, she evaluated players and helped develop their skill base with specific attention to training the middle blocker corps with practice plans and drills. Another plus for Dottie is that fact that with working in Indiana and the club system, she knows so many of the coaches and recruits, Weismiller said. Dottie just flat out knows Indiana. She has made great contacts and we haven t missed a beat in-state. We have actually stepped up our communication with teams in state and with the club coaches. Before jumping into coaching, Porch played professionally in four separate European professional leagues. From , Porch served as the primary outside hitter of her squad in the Ankara, Turkey league. The season before, she performed as a outside hitter in the Lisbon, Portugal league. In , Porch was a utility player and outside hitter in the Vigevano, Italy league and in her rookie season, she was the primary outside hitter for her team in the Orividen Ponnistus league in Orivesi, Finland. During her maiden season, she helped her team to the Suomen Cup and garnered Suomen Cup Player of the Game and European Cup Player of the Game honors. Under Dottie Porch s leadership, Indiana s middles had a banner year in Overall, they set the school record for most total blocks. Prior to her time overseas, Porch began her career as a two-sport student-athlete for the IPFW Mastodons. After beginning her collegiate career as a basketball player for the Dons, the volleyball coaching staff at IPFW quickly discovered her talents and asked her to join the team. While at IPFW, the AVCA All-American was a two-time IPFW player of the year, three-time all-great Lakes Valley Conference and two-time all-region honoree. Dottie currently resides in Indianapolis surrounded by family. She has two sisters, Keisha and Erica, and one brother, Bobby. She also has one niece, Corrina (two) and three nephews, Christopher (14), Darrian (five) and Daunte (two). Her mother, Linda, also lives nearby.
