SETTING THE SCENE Penn State will continue Big Ten play on Sunday when it hosts Northwestern (6-4-3, ) at 2 p.m. as part of a doubleheader day of Nittany Lion soccer action at Jeffrey Field. The conference match, which will follow the PSU women s game with Iowa, will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. LAST TIME OUT Penn State is coming off a hard-fought, hardluck 1-0 road loss to No. 5 Akron on Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions pressured the defending national champion Zips from the opening whistle, getting off five shots in the early going, including one that ricocheted off the crossbar. Despite playing down a man for much of the second half, after junior Julian Cardona was sent off with a red card in the 50th minute, Penn State outshot Akron, 5-3, and had an excellent chance to tie the game in its waning moments but was denied. The Nittany Lions were aggressive on the attack throughout the game, earning 10 corner kicks to Akron's three. Shots finished 10-8 in favor of the Zips. Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton recorded four saves in his 13th straight start. DEFENSIVELY DRIVEN Solid team defense continues to be the hallmark of the 2011 Nittany Lions. Penn State has allowed the fewest goals of any Big Ten team (8) and leads the conference in goals against average (0.60) and shutouts (8). The veteran back line, made up of seniors Mark Fetrow, Justin Lee, Matt Smallwood, and junior Brian Forgue, who have combined to start 218 career games, has played strong defense in front of freshman goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton. NORTHWESTERN PREVIEW Northwestern enters Sunday s contest as one of the Big Ten s hottest teams, going unbeaten in seven of its last games (5-1-2), including a 2-0 victory over Northern Illinois on Wednesday in Evanston. The Wildcats biggest win of the season came last weekend, when they knocked off Ohio State, 3-2, in Columbus. Senior forward Oliver Kupe is Northwestern s leading scorer, totaling five goals and 10 points, but Chris Ritter (3 goals, 1 assist), Lepe Seetane (2 goals, 3 assists), and Kyle Schickel (2 goals, 3 assists) have also been productive offensive contributors. Reed Losee tops the Cats in shots (33) and shots on goal (15) while both of Nikko Boxall s goals have been game winners. The Northwestern defense, which has allowed 13 goals in 13 games, is anchored by freshman goalkeeper Tyler Miller. Miller possesses a 0.80 goals against average and has recorded six shutouts. PENN STATE-NORTHWESTERN SERIES Penn State has posted more wins against Northwestern than any other Big Ten team, compiling a dominating series record. A year ago, the Nittany Lions drew, 1-1, with the Wildcats in Evanston during the regular season and won 3-1 in a first round match-up of the Big Ten Tournament in University Park. Penn State is all-time versus Northwestern at Jeffrey Field. NEXT UP FOR THE NITTANY LIONS Next week, Penn State will begin a grueling four-game road swing that will see the Nittany Lions log nearly 1,700 miles of round trip travel when it visits the Charm City on Wednesday, Oct. 19 for a 7 p.m. contest with UMBC (6-3-3). In 2010, the Lions fell to the Retrievers, 2-1, in overtime at Jeffrey Field in the first-ever meeting between the two programs. 2 GAME NOTES CARDONA EARNS CALL UP Julian Cardona was recently called into duty by the Puerto Rico National Team to play in two World Cup qualifying games. Cardona left Happy Valley following the Nittany Lions 2-0 win over Penn on October 4 to head to Puerto Rico and returned on October 11. Cardona started and earned 50-plus minutes of playing time in Puerto Rico s Group D World Cup qualifier with Caribbean rival Saint Kitts and Nevis on October 7 in Bayamon, P.R., which ended in a 1-1 draw. On October 11, Cardona and the Blue Hurricane met the Canadian National Team at BMO Field in Toronto. Canada had dominated Group D, scoring 14 goals while allowing just one but Puerto Rico played the home team to a 0-0 tie. However, based on its overall Group D record, Puerto Rico was eliminated from World Cup contention. Cardona has started 11 of 12 games in which he has appeared in his first season as a Nittany Lion and currently leads the team in goals with three and is tied for the team lead in points with seven. WOLVERTON ANCHORS DEFENSE Through the first 13 games of his collegiate career, freshman goalkeeper Andrew Wolverton has registered eight shutouts. Wolverton is just two shutouts shy of tying the Penn State single season record of 10 held by Angelo Nickas (1980), Whit Gibson (1998), and Conrad Taylor (2005). Ranks first in the Big Ten in goals against average (0.60), shutouts (8), and shutouts per game (0.62). Ranks No. 13 in the NCAA in goals against average. STRONG AT HOME Penn State finished out its non-conference home schedule unbeaten, posting a record. The Nittany Lions didn t allow a goal to a nonconference opponent at Jeffrey Field in 2011, outscoring foes, 9-0. Penn State s loss to Michigan is its lone blemish at home this season and the two goals that the Wolverines tallies represent the lone scores surrendered by PSU. Penn State has Big Ten home games versus Northwestern (10/16) and Wisconsin (11/5) remaining on its schedule. Penn State was at home in 2010, outscoring opponents, PENN STATE IN THE STAT RANKINGS Penn State ranks No. 1 in the Big Ten in goals allowed (8), goals against average (0.60), shutouts (8), and corner kicks (83). Penn State ranks No. 4 in the NCAA in shutout percentage and No. 10 in team goals against average. WARMING REACHES MILESTONE With Penn State s 1-0 win over Florida International on September, head coach Bob Warming secured his 400th career win. Became just the 31st coach in NCAA men's soccer history to reach the 400-win milestone. Ranks sixth among active Division I head coaches and 15th all-time in career wins. Inducted into the Creighton University Athletics Hall of Fame in May AWARDS AND RECOGNITION Minh Vu was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week on August 29 for scoring his first Division I goal in his first game as a Nittany Lion in a 1-0 win over Siena. Andrew Wolverton was honored as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on September 12 following a 3-0 shutout of Saint Peter s. Jordan Tyler was named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week on September 12 for scoring two goals in 3-0 win over Saint Peter s. Andrew Wolverton was selected to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week on September 19 for recording shutouts versus Saint Francis (Pa.) and Hartford. ROSTER MAKEOVER Penn State lost 71% of its goals, 57% of its assists, and 66% of its points from last year s squad, including the NCAA scoring champion in Corey Hertzog (20 goals, 6 assists) and the nation s leader in assists in Matheus Braga (17). In all, 12 letterwinners and six starters are gone from the 2010 team that went , played for a Big Ten title, and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Championship. Replacing those losses on the 2011 roster are 12 newcomers, including five transfers and seven freshmen. Jacob Barron (UC Davis), Julian Cardona (Butler), and Hasani Sinclair (South Florida) transferred from Division I programs while Mihn Vu (Pima Community College) and Marvin Ledgister (North Iowa Area Community College) came to Penn State from junior colleges. Through 13 games, transfers have combined for 48 starts and accounted for 22 of Penn State s 41 points. Andrew Wolverton (13) and Owen Griffith (4) are the only freshmen to earn starts in CAPTAINS Senior defender Matt Smallwood was named the team captain prior to the start of the 2011 season. Smallwood exclusively served in that role until the week leading up to Penn State s match-up with Michigan State when head coach Bob Warming appointed fellow seniors Mackenzie Arment, Mark Fetrow, and Justin Lee as cocaptains. The four co-captains have combined to start 225 games at Penn State. COST JOINS WARMING S STAFF In late September, Penn State head coach Bob Warming added former Nittany Lion Drew Cost ( ) to his coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Cost was a team co-captain in 2010 and was a two-time All-Big Ten midfielder. Starting 70 career games, he finished with 30 points (10 goals, 10 assists) Selected by Real Salt Lake in the 2010 MLS Supplemental Draft with the No. 14 pick (32nd overall) in the second round. After spending training camp with the defending Real Salt Lake, he signed with the Rochester Rhinos of USL PRO. Appearing in 19 games, Cost scored two goals in his first professional season. WARMING S STAFF HAS NEW FACES IN assistants Jason Mims (Nebraska Omaha) and Isang Jacob (IUPUI) landed Division I head coaching jobs in the offseason. On May 11, Warming added Bo Oshoniyi, former assistant at Wake Forest and South Florida, to his staff. A two-time All-American goalkeeper at at Central Connecticut State, Oshoniyi won two Division II national championships. Drafted into the MLS by Columbus, he played 12 years as a professional, capturing a title with Kansas City in On June 27, Warming added Chad Duernberger, former head coach at Division II University of Charleston, to his bench. One of the youngest head coaches in the nation when he was hired by his alma mater in 2008, the 24-year-old Duernberger engineered an impressive and rapid turnaround after inheriting a Charleston program that went the year prior team went , advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals and earning a final No. 7 ranking. Named 2009 NSCAA Division II Coach of the Year. Was a four-year starter for Charleston ( ), earning First Team All-WVIAC honors three times and all-region recognition in 2002.
