Getting that win against Iowa was a building block that we need to learn from and continue to improve upon, Head Coach Keylor Chan said. We ve been getting better each week, and I look for us to improve even more in these upcoming matches. Purdue (10-6, 3-3 Big Ten) is coming off a weekend in which they suffered two losses against a pair of top-10 teams No. 5 Penn State and No. 8 Ohio State. The Boilermakers fell in both matches by a score of 3-0. Purdue s offense is led by Kim McConaha and Leah Wischmeier, who have 249 and 265 kills, respectively. The Boilermakers have a strong defense as well with four players over 100 digs on the year Daren Poe leads the team with 212. Indiana comes to Evanston after dropping two home matches to No. 5 Penn State and No. 8 Ohio State. Northwestern s match against Indiana will mark the first televised match of the year for the Cats. The contest will air the following day (Sunday, Oct. 17) at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Chicago. The Hoosiers Katie Pollom paced IU last week with 22 kills with a 3.14 kills per game average, while Tasha Arsenych set up most of Pollom s kills with 63 assists. Pollom also came up big at the net for eight blocks, while Lindsay Cochrane swept the floor with 20 digs. On the year, Christina Archibald and Pollom lead IU s offense with 240 and 256 kills, respectively. Mandy Eberle is a force in the middle for the Hoosiers with 46.5 blocks, averaging 1.31 per game. The Cats split their matches against Purdue and Indiana in 2003, winning at home, while dropping both road matches. For NU, sophomore Julie Purcell (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) boasts a team-leading 151 kills, while freshman Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) has a 3.52 kills per game average. Paulus has come on strong as of late, posting a career-high 27 kills against Iowa. Junior co-captain Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend) anchors the back row for the Cats with 231 digs, while freshman Brittney Aldridge (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) boasts 26.5 total blocks on the, with five solos. Senior co-captain Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) now stands at second place all-time with 4,511 assists and is just 232 shy of overtaking Liz Renius school record of 4,743. Robertson needs to average about 16 assists in each of the Cats remaining 14 regular season matches. She has averaged 36 assists over NU s first 16 matches. The win marked the first conference victory of the season for NU, now 6-10 on the season and 1-5 in the Big Ten. Freshmen Courtnie Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Ozaukee) and Lindsay Anderson (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) lit NU s offense with career-high kill totals of 28 and 21, respectively. Freshman Brittney Aldridge (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) recorded two blocks and eight kills. While the freshmen came of age Friday, they were not the only ones to assault the stat sheet. Senior Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) was in the zone for the Cats, recording a double-double 64 assists and 11 digs. Paulus also had a double-double by adding 14 digs to her 28 kills. Senior Leah Delcourt (Rock Island, Ill./Rock Island) had her best performance since gradually returning to the lineup after coming off a preseason finger injur y. Delcourt star ted for the Cats and posted a season-high nine kills and 3.5 blocks. While the great individual efforts were hard to miss, the win was a total team effort, as five Cats ended the night with doubledigit dig totals and NU recorded seven ser vice aces, 11 blocks, 78 kills and 85 digs. Northwestern fell to No. 3 Minnesota Saturday, Oct. 9 in three close games (21-30, 26-30, 27-30). The Cats earned a split on the weekend though, after beating Iowa the previous night 3-2. I saw some great things from our team tonight, Head Coach Keylor Chan said. We played right with one of the top teams in the nation and we are continuing to get better. Robertson recorded her second-consecutive double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs, and also added two service aces. Robertson's service aces came at key spots for the Cats in the third game, pushing NU's lead to The Gophers battled back to win in close fashion though, Anderson led the offense with 12 kills, while Aldridge was solid with nine kills and a.389 hitting percentage. On the defensive end, junior co-captain Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend) recorded 17 kills against one of the top offenses in the Big Ten. Head Coach Keylor Chan Keylor Chan is in his fifth season as the Wildcats head coach. In just four short years, Chan has accomplished many things at Northwestern that few others have. In 2003, Chan led his Wildcats to their best overall record in six years, along with a second-consecutive NCAA appearance. That campaign came on the heels of a successful 2002, in which the Cats had their highest conference finish in more than a decade and the team s first NCAA appearance since His overall record since becoming the Northwestern head coach in 2000 is 58-81, while his all-time coaching record is Chan s staff consists of first-year assistant coach Ryan Theis, while assistant coach Jenny Manz and volunteer assistant Bill Dewar return for the second year with the Wildcats. Up-and-Coming Cats After graduating four seniors from the 2003 squad including All-Big Ten performer Erika Lange NU has injected some youth into its starting lineup this year. Freshmen Stefanie Alde, Brittney Aldridge, Lindsay Anderson, Stephanie Jurivich and Courtnie Paulus have all seen time as a starter for the Cats so far this year. Through 16

3 2004 NORTHWESTERN VOLLEYBALL matches, at least four freshmen have cracked the starting lineup. Despite being thrown into starting roles so early in their careers, the freshmen have responded well by posting 519 kills, 246 digs and 83.5 blocks between them. Jurivich in particular has been vital to NU s success. She holds the No. 2 spot on the team for blocks and assists with and 20.5 and 81, respectively. Cats On The Small Screen Twice during the 2004 season, the Wildcats will be a part of the Big Ten television package carried by ESPN and Fox Sports Net. Northwestern s first televised match comes when it battles Indiana in Welsh-Ryan Arena on Saturday, Oct. 16. The contest will air the following day (Sunday, Oct. 17) at 3 p.m. on Fox Sports Chicago. Northwestern s second televised match will be when the Cats tangle with their intrastate rival, Illinois, in Champaign at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6. The game will be broadcast by ESPN2 on a tape-delay basis the following day (Sunday, Nov. 7) at 3 p.m. The 2004 Wildcat Captains The captains for the 2004 season are Christie Gardner and Drew Robertson. The duo represents 50 percent of the upperclassmen on a youthful NU team that feature four freshmen starters. But the Cats could not ask for two more quality leaders, as both Gardner and Robertson were key players in Northwestern s two most recent trips to the NCAA tournament. Robertson accepts the honor as captain for the second consecutive year, while it is Gardner s first tour as team captain. The duo has combined for 72 kills, 583 assists and 384 digs in 16 matches this year. Aces of Wildcats Being a libero, junior Christie Gardner never really gets too involved in Northwestern s offense during the flow of a play. She only has seven kills through 16 matches, but she s found a way to help the Cats score points some other way: her service game. Gardner has one of the most overpowering jump serves on the team, if not the Big Ten, and she has smoked that serve over the net to the tune of 12 service aces so far on the year. She is on pace to surpass her total of 26 service aces from last year. While Gardner brings a certain sense of violence to the game with her serving style, senior Drew Robertson mixes in a little precision to complement her power. She leads the team with 16 service aces by using a softer, more surgical serves that exploit the weakness of the opposition. As a team. the Cats have 68 service aces on the year, averaging 1.26 per game. Freshman Stefanie Alde and junior Lizzie Carlson are also have double-digit service aces the duo has 10 apiece. Nice to Meet You Three teams on this year s schedule are unfamiliar to the Wildcats. Northwestern s matches against IPFW, Long Beach State, and Western Kentucky marked the first time in school history that the Cats battled these opponents. NU took on IPFW in the NU Labor Day Invite, beating the Mastodons 3-0. NU traveled to Drew Robertson s hometown of Long Beach, Calif. on Sept. 12, to face the 49ers, losing 0-3. Ranked ahead of NU were Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin, Michigan State, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio State and Purdue. Indiana and Iowa rounded out the poll. Big Ten Competition starts this weekend when Penn State and Wisconsin come to Evanston, Ill. for Friday and Saturday evening matches. Stiff Competition Northwestern is again facing one of the nation s most challenging schedules in 2004, taking on nine teams that advanced to the 2003 NCAA Tournament and playing six matches against teams ranked in the Top 25 USA Today/AVCA poll. NU wasted little time before facing its highest-ranked opponent in preseason polls in the season-opening NU Labor Day Invite when the Cats played then-no. 5 Florida. Then-No. 11 Stanford came to Evanston for the Wildcat Classic Sept. 18. As Big Ten season started last weekend, NU took on two top-20 teams in Penn State and Ohio State. The Cats fell in three games to both No. 6 Penn State and No. 8 Ohio State. The Cats faced their highest-ranked opponent of 2004 this past weekend when they traveled to No. 2 Minnesota Saturday, Oct. 9. The Gophers had been ranked No. 1 in the nation for two straight weeks before being knocked off by Ohio State this past weekend. Earlier this season, Minnesota beat then-no. 1 USC the two-time defending NCAA Champion. 5 2004 NORTHWESTERN VOLLEYBALL Iron Cats How many people can claim to have never missed a single day of work in two straight years? That s no sick days. No days off. No hitting the snooze button. Probably not many, except for Lizzie Carlson (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto) and Christie Gardner (West Bend, Wis./West Bend East). Sure, they were bumped and most definitely bruised from rough Big Ten schedules, but Carlson and Gardner have played in every single match in their careers at Nor thwestern. As a freshman, Carlson came right in and started all 33 matches. Last year, she split the starting libero slot with then-senior co-captain Erica Knavel, but Carlson still managed to see the court in every match. In Gardner s freshman campaign, the outside hitter appeared in all 126 games, helping NU to its first trip to the NCAA tournament since Gardner followed it up by not missing a single game for the Cats last year, as well. As expected, the two juniors have par ticipated in every single game this year, leading the way as a key 50 percent of the upperclassmen on the Wildcats roster. Set It and Forget It Senior setter Drew Robertson has made her mark on the Northwestern record book in her three years wearing the Purple and White. Last season, the Long Beach, Calif. native recorded 1,463 assists, good for second place in Northwestern s all-time single-season record book. Robertson also has a firm hold on the top spot with 1,515 assists, which she accomplished her sophomore year. She now stands at second all-time with 4,511 and is just 232 assists shy of overtaking Liz Renius school record of 4,743. Robertson needs to average about 16 assists in each of the Cats remaining 14 regular season matches. She has averaged 36 assists over NU s first 16 matches. Fountain of Talented Youth Head Coach Keylor Chan s incoming freshman class is ranked No. 20 nationally by PrepVolleyball.com. The six-member class also ranks fourth in the Big Ten, just behind Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin. The 2004 recruiting class was ranked ahead of Big Ten rivals Penn State (No. 21), Minnesota (No. 22), Illinois (No. 23), Purdue (No. 27) and Michigan State (No. 29). We are thrilled to have such an athletically and academically talented class coming to join us in 2004, said Chan. My staff and I worked extremely hard to recruit these individuals and we are all excited to see them make the next step into collegiate athletics. The class is made up of middle blockers Stefanie Alde and Brittney Aldridge outside hitters Lindsay Anderson, Courtnie Paulus and Cally Stolbach (Tampa, Fla./Berkley Prep), and libero Vanessa Bezic (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes). 1,000 KILL CLUB Janine Makar Erika Lange Dawn Reig Madelyn Meneghetti Liz Douglass Stacey Kammes Jessica Holloway Shelley Brzozowski Carmen Burbach Alison Krumbein , , , , , , , , , ,246 All-Tournament Honors Courtnie Paulus Fr. The senior outside hitter recorded 25 kills and a.600 hitting percentage against the Wolverines and followed with an 18-kill performance over the Spartans. Belter led No. 24 Illinois to a pair of wins this past weekend, including a 3-2 victor y over Michigan - the lone Conference matchup to extend to five games. She hit.567 for the weekend, which raised her season hitting percentage from.256 to.320. This marks the second consecutive week Belter has posted impressive numbers. She had 19 kills versus Wisconsin and 12 against Nor thwestern the week before, giving her a four-match total of 74 kills and a.454 clip in the past two weeks.
