Every stadium from the National League right down to the North West Counties League has its own characteristics, often carried through with the club right from the day they were formed. Take Hallam FC, for example, who play in Sheffield at the world s oldest football ground. Their pitch is on one of the most significant slopes you could ever imagine football to be played on. Or sometimes it is the little things that catch your attention, like how Ramsbottom United of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League insist of serving your half-time brew in a mug, before their trusty volunteers walk around the ground with a collection basket. There is a unique quirky element to most non-league grounds making no match-day experience the same. There are hundreds and hundreds of semi-professional clubs up and down the country and barely any of them have full-time staff. The football pyramid s foundations are held in place by the band of volunteers who dedicate their lives to ensuring that each and every football club makes it from one Saturday to the next without a hitch. They mow the pitch, sweep the changing rooms, wash the kits, do the paperwork, serve behind the bar, make the pies and so much more. These people are volunteers. They are the people who Non-League Day should be about. The people who ensure there is football to be watched on a week-to week basis. What they do on a weekly basis is truly special. 3 PITCH SIDE SPONSORS AT SHERWOOD COLLIERY FC FOR 2016/2017 Message from the Chairman I want to start by welcoming all of you to Debdale Park for the season. It promises to be an exciting one for the club as we compete in a number of competitions. The first team are again playing the South section of the Central Midlands League which promises to be very competitive with some excellent clubs and teams to pit ourselves against. With the CML cup, Floodlit Cup and Notts FA Senior Cup to play for it promises to be a busy season for Wayne Savage and his team. We have for the first time also entered the FA Vase and have been given a tough draw in the second qualifying round away at Clipstone on September 24 th. The reserve team are under new management this season as Scott Rogers takes the helm. Scott is a former Sherwood Colliery player he actually scored the goal that brought the MAA League title to the cub in 2011 and last season managed the Heanor Town Reserves who were widely acclaimed as the best footballing team in the CML. We moved swiftly to appoint Scott when Heanor decided to disband their reserve team this season. Scott will help our young players progress and support the First team this season. Another first for the club is the advent of our new Under 21 team Since becoming chairman I have been keen to introduce an Under 21 team so I am really pleased we have managed to bring that to fruition this season the games are played midweek under the lights so we get more football and increased revenue into the club. Dave Carver has assumed the managerial duties alongside his first team coaching duties and he will be assisted by Wayne, Scott and Phil Kirkland who (now he s back from the USA!) is combining his secretarial duties with coaching. Off the field we have been busy again. You may notice a lick of paint around the ground and also new box style goal nets to add a touch of class to the pitch. Chris the groundsman has worked tirelessly to get the pitch in tip top condition for the season ahead and he has done a great job. New advertising boards are in the process of being erected around the pitch so keep an eye on that. Finally, I want to extend a warm welcome the officials, players and supporters of Borrowash Victoria who visit Debdale Park this evening We hope you enjoy your visit. 4 MINUTES SLIENCE TONIGHT IN MEMORY OF DANIEL WILKINSON A non-league footballer died after collapsing on the pitch during a match on Monday, his club has announced. Shaw Lane defender Daniel Wilkinson, 26, collapsed during a cup game at Brighouse Town's St Giles Road stadium. He was treated on the pitch before being taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax. "He was such a great lad. I don't how we move on," Craig Elliot, manager of the Barnsleybased club, who play in England's eighth tier, told BBC Sport. "It's just devastating. Everyone went to the hospital. We all deal with it in different ways, but we just have to support the family as much as we can. "His mum and dad are such brave people. We signed him in pre-season, he had just finished university at Loughborough and moved in with his girlfriend in Sheffield." The Northern Premier League Division One South side led the preliminaryround game 2-0 when Wilkinson collapsed with an hour played. The match was abandoned. Wilkinson started his career at Hull City, before loan moves to Harrogate Town and North Ferriby United. He later played for Loughborough University, Scarborough Athletic and Goole, and joined Shaw Lane from Rushall Olympic in the summer. Shaw Lane chairman Craig Wood said in a statement: "The club would like to thank everyone for their heartfelt messages. There are no more words at this time." In their own statement, Brighouse said: "Words are not enough to capture the complete sense of despair and desolation that surrounds the club this morning following last night's tragic event. "Our thoughts and support also go out to our footballing friends at Shaw Lane and huge thanks also must be paid to the volunteers and emergency response teams who tried valiantly to save Dan's life. "Rest in peace young man - the world is a poorer place without you."
