2 GAMEDAY CENTRAL Scouting UNLV UNLV enters Friday's contest against Colorado State tied atop the Mountain West with a record in non-conference play. The Rebels are tied for third in the Mountain West with 13 goals for and 10 goals allowed on the year. UNLV has also racked up 14 assists on the year, leading the entire conference. Key Players The Rebels are led by junior midfielder Denali Murnan. The Colorado native leads the team with two goals and four assists. Her eight points currently is tied for fourth in the Mountain West, while her four assists are tied for the league's most. Series vs. UNLV Friday's meeting is the second meeting all-time between the two schools. Colorado State fell just short on the road in Las Vegas last year, losing to UNLV, 1-0, after a goal in the 70th minute. Scouting Nevada Nevada enters this weekend's competition boasting a record on the year. The Wolf Pack have totaled six goals and have allowed 22 goals this season, the second most in the Mountain West. Nevada is most recently coming off of a 1-0 win at home over UC Davis. Key Players The Wolf Pack are led by freshman forward Angel Meriwether, who leads the team in goals (3), points (7), shots (14) shots on goal (9) and game-winning goals (2). The freshman has been dynmaic early on and is tied for fifth in the conference in goals and tied for seventh in points. Series vs. Eastern Washington Sunday's meeting is the second meeting all-time between the two programs. Last year, Colorado State walked away from Reno with a 1-0 win at Nevada. Where to Watch Both Friday's and Sunday's matches will be streamed for free on the Mountain West Network. Video: Stats: Follow Along on Twitter Match updates will also be provided on twitter Rams Open Up Conference Slate After a non-conference schedule that tested Colorado State both at home and on the road, the Rams will host a pair of Nevada schools to open up Mountain West play. CSU first plays host to UNLV, who the Rams lost to 1-0 last year. Following UNLV, CSU will take on Nevada, who the Rams beat in Nevada for their only conference win of The Colorado State Rams embark on the program's second season ever with a schedule featuring some of the premier programs in the sport. On the year, the Rams will play 10 matches at home, eight on the road and one at a neutral site. The Iron Woman Through eight matches this season, only senior defender Jami Vaughn has played every possible minute in the field for the Rams. This a familiar sight for Colorado State, as the Kansas transfer was one of just three players in the entire Mountain West to play every possible minute in Dating back to last year when she first came to Colorado State, Vaughn has now plaed every possible minute in 26-consecutive matches, a streak that spans 2,349 minutes without a sub. Vaughn's streak leads the Mountain West. A Pair Of Wins For The Rams Will... Give Colorado State its first winning streak in program history. Improve CSU to in 2014 Set a new program record for wins in a season. Give the Rams their first Mountain West wins of the year. In 2013, CSU went in conference play. Improve Head Coach Bill Hempen's career record to He currently ranks No. 19 among Division I active coaches in all-time wins. Eckert's Moment Without a goal in the 2014 campaign, sophomore midfielder Amy Eckert chose a timely moment for her first goal of the season, and second of her career. Three minutes into overtime against College of Charleston, Eckert snuck behind the defense and received a pass from junior forward Gianna Bertana. Just inside the edge of the box, Eckert one-timed the pass and slotted the ball into the corner of the net to give CSU it's second win of the year, matching the team's total from last year. Attacking From The Back It's no secret that Colorado State loves to use its wing backs as part of its attack. That trend is never more clear than when looking at the Rams' senior left back, Catherine Ruder. Through eight matches, Ruder leads the team with 14 shots and five shots on goal, including a team-most three vs. SMU on Sept. 12. Fellow senior defender Jami Vaughn is third on the team with four shots. Depth is Key Head Coach Bill Hempen has not been afraid to go to his bench early in this 2014 season. As the team continues to improve upon its fitness and experiment with different lineups, Hempen has played 24 different girls already this season, with all 24 girls seeing action in at least two matches. Experience At The Back While Colorado State returns just nine players from last year's team, the 2014 Rams feature plenty of experence at key positions. CSU returns its entire starting defense from last year, including co-captains Megan Speed and Jami Vaughn. Out of a possible 26 matches, Speed, Vaughn, Stauffer and Ruder have been the starting defense for 22 of them. In 2013, Stauffer missed two matches due to a broken wrist. Jumping On The Opponent Early Colorado State knows the importance of getting off to a quick start in a match. An early goal can completely tilt the entire momentum of the match. All three of the Rams' wins have come when they have scored the first goal. All-time, CSU is when scoring first, and all-time when conceding the first goal of the match. Second Half Action In Colorado State's eight matches this season, the matches have started to open up in the second half. Across the board, CSU's stats have gone up across the board in the second half of matches. While the Rams have tallied 20 total shots in the first half of matches this season, that total jumps to 48 in the second half of matches. Similarly, CSU's corners jump from seven in the first half to 24 in the second half this year. Both of CSU's goals this season have also been scored after the intermission. For Nevada, this trend also holds true. The Wolf Pack have been outscored 16-1 in the first halves of matches this year, but have played fairly even against their opponents, being outscored just 6-5 in the second halves. Fresh Faces Fans can expect to see plenty of fresh faces on the 2014 Rams. The second-year program brings in a total of 18 newcomers, including 11 freshmen and seven transfers. The new additions are expected to give the Rams plenty of competition and depth. Colorado Cup With a win over Northern Colorado, Colorado State earned its first win in the Colorado Cup. The Colorado Cup is a season-long tournament between the six division I teams in Colorado. This is CSU's first year as part of the Colorado Cup, which Head Coach Bill Hempen helped create. The Rams lost their first match of the Colorado Cup, 2-0 at Colorado, and knocked off UNC 1-0 at home. With four points through two matches, the Rams are in fifth place Colorado Cup Table Pl. In its first match in the Montana Invitational, the Colorado State Rams (2-5- 0) couldn t overcome two first-half goals from Montana (4-4-0) on Friday afternoon, falling to the home side 2-0. The first half was even and physical for the first 19 minutes, until the Grizzlies opened the scoring with a Tyler Adair goal. Senior forward Peytyn Wheeler delivered a low cross from just inside the 18-yard box, which skirted under the foot of a Rams defender and onto the right foot of Adair. Adair had an easy finish from just inside the six-yard box, after a hard run to get behind the Rams defense, to give Montana the early lead. This was Adair s second goal of 2014, and the seventh of her career. Montana took this momentum and turned it into a second first-half goal, as freshman Allie Widner fired a shot from beyond the 18-yard box and snuck it inside the far post in the 33rd minute. The Rams began to calm down after 35 minutes, connecting passes and maintaining possession, and gave themselves two chances off of dangerous crosses. The first came off a free kick, as senior defender Jami Vaughn delivered a beautiful ball just outside the six-yard box, but CSU s glancing header went just over the bar. Freshman forward Janelle Stone sent in a low cross that took an unexpected bounce past a Montana defender, but there wasn t a Ram to place the ball in the back of the net. The Grizzlies outshot the Rams 5-1 in the opening half, on the way to their 2-0 lead at the intermission. The Rams played the second half with noticeably more energy and delivered a flurry of shots on goal, including one from Bri Sweeney, her first shot-on-target of the year. Despite forcing Montana s keeper Kailey Norman to make three saves, CSU couldn t convert and dropped its Montana Invitational opener 2-0. Vaughn played the full-90 for the 25th-consecutive match, a streak that dates back to the first match of 2013 and spans 2,259 minutes. The Rams will return to South Campus Stadium on Sunday morning for a 10 a.m. start against Eastern Washington. Eastern Washington, which made the three-hour drive east to Missoula, was defeated by Hawai i earlier on Friday, 3-1. MISSOULA, Mont. The Colorado State Rams (2-6-0) were not able to overcome two early Eastern Washington goals, as they dropped their second match in three days on Sunday morning. The Eagles got on the board in the sixth minute when freshman Savannah Hoekstra scored on a two-on-one. Hoekstra, a native of Liberty Lake, Wash., added another goal nine minutes later. On the second goal, the Rams turned the ball over leading to an easy goal for Hoekstra. Eastern Washington extended its program record scoring a goal for the sixth consecutive match. Head Coach Bill Hempen gave senior goalie Maggie Sherman the starting nod on Sunday morning, her third appearance this season and first start. Sherman registered three saves in her 45 minutes of action. Hempen elected to play sophomore Jesse McGinley in the second half. The sophomore keeper didn t allow a goal and made two saves. The second half was a different story for the Rams, as they racked up 11 shots and had constant pressure on the Eagles. Substitute Janelle Stone gave Eastern Washington fits, as she was constantly attacking along the left sideline in the second half. The Rams had two corner kicks near the end of the game that gave them their best chance to score, but just weren t able to connect. At the end of the day, the Rams outshot the Eagles The Rams concluded non-conference play with a record, and will open up their Mountain West slate on Friday, Sept. 26 at home vs. UNLV.
