Tuesday evening, Liberty and Longwood will renew acquaintances for the 26th time. It will be the first time since 2011 that the two teams have met as non-conference opponents. Liberty leads the all-time series, The Flames defeated the Lancers, 2-1, at Osborne Stadium in their last meeting as Big South Conference foes, last season. Due to the rainfall from and scheduling conflicts caused by Hurricane Florence, the Flames have had their last two matches canceled and will have not played in 16 days. Liberty forward Tresor Mbuyu leads the ASUN with 15 points and is tied for first with six goals. Flames midfielder Kevin Mendoza netted Liberty s first ASUN goal at Stetson and is currently fifth in the conference with nine points. Liberty leads the ASUN in scoring with a 2.14 goals per game average. The Flames have allowed 1.57 goals per game. With Blake Myers scoring his first collegiate goal at Stetson, the Flames have seen seven different players score a goal this season. Liberty has added a match at American in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 16. The Flames were picked to finish in sixth place in the 2018 ASUN Preseason Men s Soccer Poll. NEW ERA OF LIBERTY SOCCER On Sept. 13, the Liberty Flames played the Stetson Hatters to a 3-3 tie in the first ever ASUN Conference match in program history. Midfielder Kevin Mendoza netted Liberty s first ASUN goal during the sixth minute for the Flames in the match in DeLand, Fla. The game was the first ASUN Conference match for any Liberty athletics team. On July 1, 2018, 17 of Liberty s 20 athletics programs joined the ASUN Conference and started competition in the conference with the athletics season. The ASUN Conference, headquartered in Macon, Ga., includes Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, NJIT, North Alabama, North Florida, and Stetson. ASUN men s soccer has seven programs competing, with the Flames joining Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Lipscomb, NJIT, North Florida and Stetson. HURRICANE FLORENCE CAUSES CANCELLATIONS Saturday s contest will be Liberty s first contest in 16 days. During the more than two-week span, the Flames had two home games canceled due to Hurricane Florence. Liberty s match against James Madison, scheduled for Sept. 18, was canceled due to rainfall and field conditions. This past Tuesday s non-conference match against USC Upstate was also canceled due to the Spartans having to makeup a conference contest that was postponed earlier due to Florence. MATCH ADDED AT AMERICAN Liberty announced on Monday it has added a match to its regular season schedule. On Oct. 16, the Flames will travel to Washington, D.C. for a contest against the American Eagles. Match time is scheduled for noon. LIBERTY PACES ASUN IN SCORING OFFENSE The Flames enter the weekend, leading the ASUN conference in scoring offense. Liberty has scored 2.14 goals per game and netted 15 goals to pace the conference. The Flames are tied for 14th nationally in scoring offense. MBUYU, MENDOZA AMONG ASUN LEADERS Tresor Mbuyu and Kevin Mendoza are currently among the ASUN leaders in several offensive categories. Currently, Mbuyu leads the conference with 15 points and is tied for ASUN lead with six goals. He is also tied for second in the conference with three assists. Meanwhile, Mendoza has netted three goals and three assists for nine points. His three assists tie him for second in the the league, while he is fifth in the conference in points. Brogan Engbers continues to see the majority of the playing time in the Liberty goal. Engbers enters the week with a 1.73 goals-against average and a.643 save percentage. North Florida will be playing its first ASUN Conference match of the season on Saturday. Both Liberty goal scorers in its victory over Longwood in 2017 are still on the Flames roster. 3 MEN S SOCCER GAME NOTES HEAD COACH JEFF ALDER THE ALDER FILE HEAD COACH 18th Season Alma Mater: Liberty, 1991 COACHING RECORD Year Record Career Record: Big South Record: ASUN Record: The Liberty men s soccer program has achieved new heights during Jeff Alder s tenure at his alma mater. In 2001, Alder took over a program which had been a consistent winner and built it into a perennial contender for the conference title. During his tenure, the Flames have won the program s only two conference championships (2007 & 2011), earning Liberty s inclusion in the NCAA Tournament field. This year, Alder will take his program into new territory as the Flames join the ASUN Conference. Alder s Flames have posted 10 or more wins in eight of their last 11 seasons, including five consecutive 10-plus win seasons ( ) for the first time in program history. The run of double-digit wins began with a record, the most victories in a season during his tenure, as the Flames captured their first ever Big South title in The Liberty alum captured his 100th coaching win on Sept. 13, 2011, with a 2-0 victory over No. 10 Virginia in Charlottesville, Va. Alder has seen 23 of his players move on to the professional ranks, with Sachem Wilson becoming the first Liberty player to ever play in the Europa League. Wilson made his debut in the June 2016 as a member of ND Gorcia. In addition, Alder has seen midfielder Joshua Boateng taken in the 2009 Major League Soccer (MLS) Super Draft and seven others picked in the MLS Supplemental Draft. Alder has seen several of his players earn prestigious honors during his tenure. In 2008, Boateng was listed on the Hermann Trophy watch list throughout the season and became the program s first Division I All-American. In 2002, Darryl Roberts, the program s all-time point leader, became Liberty s first Freshman All-American. Roberts and defender Osei Telesford went on to play for their country s national team, Trinidad and Tobago in In addition, junior forward Tresor Mbuyu became the first Liberty player to be named the Big South Attacking Player of the Year in 2016 and the second Flame in program history to be selected as a Big South Player of the Year. Mbuyu led the Big South with 29 points and tied for the conference lead with 10 goals. He finished the year second in the conference with nine assists. Off the field, Alder s program continues to make its mark in the classroom as well. The men s soccer team was recognized by the NCAA with a Public Recognition Award in 2012 and The award honors teams for their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores, and are given each year to teams with The facility, named after Liberty alumni Richard and Karin Osborne who gave the lead donation for the entire complex project, includes a 1,000 chairback seat grandstand, a fully-functioning press box with a permanent sound system and booth for video streaming use and red brick and wroughtiron fencing which surrounds the entire complex. Also, Alder has had two of his players named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in midfielder Phillip Aseweh in 2011 and defender Michael Gelatt in 2007 and The Flames also were honored with a NSCAA Team Academic Award for the academic year. Alder spent nine years as an assistant and four seasons as a player for 21-year head coach Bill Bell, before taking over as the program s third head coach. Alder also spent six years as the Director of Academics for Athletics, giving him more than 25 years on Liberty Mountain. During Alder s previous 17 years at the helm of the men s soccer program, the Flames have not only captured their first two Big South Conference titles in school history (2007 & 2011), but have recorded a top-three finish in the conference s regular-season standings nine times. Liberty has finished first (2001) in the Big South regularseason standings once, placed second (2003, 2004, 2007) three times and completed conference play third (2002, 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012) five times during his tenure. The Flames have also played in the Big South Championship title game five times under Alder, reaching the title contest in 2001, 2007, 2009, 2011 and Student-athletes under Alder have combined to earn one All-American honor, two Freshman All-American awards, three Capital One Academic All-America accolades, 18 all-region recognitions, one Big South Player of the Year honor, three Big South Freshman of the Year awards and 61 all-conference selections, including 32 first-team members.
