Welcome... Hello and welcome to Old Timers Day and also Say Goodbye to #1 as a Grass Surface Day. * Two weeks later than originally planned but a good day in store I m sure. Old Timers Day is something we wish to develop into an event that everyone looks forward to so please enjoy your day and share a glass or two with those that graced the field in years gone by. We have a rich history so I have no doubt the stories will grow as the day unfolds! I m sure many of our guests today will have their favourite memories of #1, memories that go back much further than my 18 year history at the club but a couple of interesting recollections I have include: Adam Price vomiting on my new Manager s Jacket after an injury when I was coaching the 3rd team (claims it was concussion but I m sure it was the booze); Ian Goode providing a dodgy stand-in keeper for the 3rd team (due to injuries and illness), who claimed to be outstanding in his field which is exactly where he was found several times during the game; Being allowed to assist maestro Barry Pickering with net erection duties over the years although I ve never actually received the certificate so perhaps failed the test; and Watching the 1st team defeat Team Taranaki in the 1st leg of the 2007 Central League play-off, a game that set us up for a 7-0 away victory the following weekend and promotion.) I never scored a goal on #1 for the Armanis, but did have the privilege of playing in a 9-0 victory over Upper Hutt a few years ago. The problem was that John Groves recorded the game, then sold copies to the team to raise funds for his new boots. Watching it now reminds me of the new super slowmo camera that Sky Sports employs for golf swings and cricket shots. Always said that man Groves was ahead of his time but unfortunately he had one of those cameras that also adds 10 pounds! Ah, the memories..... Good luck to all Petone teams this weekend and remember to play hard but play fair. Craig Deadman Chairman *at time of printing... NO SMOKING ON THE BALCONY Please note: there is now NO smoking on the balcony when a game is being played on #1.

` Our visitors: Wairarapa United The Club has its origins in the formation of Masterton United, arising from the merger of Lansdowne United and Masterton Athletic. Masterton United merged with Douglas Villa to form Masterton in 1974, and continued under that name following the latter s withdrawal from the amalgamation in There was another merger with Douglas Villa to form Wairarapa United in 1991, but that venture lasted one year. The club reverted to Masterton, before merging with Carterton to form Wairarapa United in The club has competed in the Central Premier League since In Wairarapa s first season in the Central Premier League, the club finished sixth. Wairarapa s highest finish in the League is third place, which they achieved in both 2010 and The club defeated four time champions Napier Rovers 2-1 to win the Chatham Cup in This was Wairarapa s first appearance in a Chatham Cup Final. 4 Improving Junior Football at Petone Custom and Ready-Made Packaging Specialists Downer Street, Lower Hutt THE STATION sports café & bar The Hutt Valley s leading sports bar, proudly supporting Petone FC. With the season now almost three quarters of the way through, the new Whole of Football format implemented at the junior level is taking shape. As mentioned in the previous junior update, the Whole of Football plan was developed by New Zealand Football in an effort to produce a professional and consistent approach to player development. Whilst the plan affects many of the junior grades in some way, the most significant change has been seen in grades 7 and 8. The way the format is structured now sees Petone running two weeks of in-house sessions. These sessions run for an hour on Saturday mornings and combine a warm up with four small sided games. On the third week a festival day against other clubs from the Hutt Valley is run at Fraser Park. This incorporates a warm up and five 10 minute games. The reduced pitch sizes this year mean that games are limited to a maximum of 5 v 5, with no goalkeepers. This allows for the greatest number of touches on the ball, and coaches are encouraged to referee games from the sideline, allowing the children to take greater control of the game. The aim of this format is to allow children to enjoy football whilst improving skills and developing their knowledge of the game. Technical development, decision making skills, and game awareness have already begun to improve amongst the younger age groups, and many coaches have commented on how they are now seeing players of all abilities getting a greater number of touches and becoming more involved in the game. Stu Pyne has been working with coaches and players in all grades to improve essential and basic ball skills that allow the players to approach the game and their opposition with greater levels of confidence and skill. In addition to the 7th and 8th grades, the First Kicks programme, which has 4-6 year olds playing in a similar format, operates on a Saturday morning and now has over 70 enthusiastic children playing each weekend. For more information about the Whole of Football plan visit the New Zealand Football website:

From The Balcony! Okay this time So to the final game on number #1! We all know it was supposed to be against Napier but the weather had other plans. The great rains came in and turned Memorial into a bowl of soup similar to the kind you would be served in a japanese sushi bar or establishment of that ilk. Is it Miso soup? Always has lots of floaties in it and looks a bit muddy? Let s go with that. I was so pumped for the Napier game. I had done my little article and was going around the town singing farewell to old number #1, so many emotions but your time has come. Then it got changed to Wellington and I threw a strop. I didn t go to the game, very disappointing on my half. Maybe it s all a blessing. Petone get to play the last game against Wairarapa, the league leaders and Chatham Cup holders. It s Old Timers Day. Frankie Martini will be in the building later on. Craig Deadman will be shouting me drinks. Magical! Now the EPL is not to far away from starting again. I m hoping Manchester United can go one better and regain the title off City. City bought their way to the title mind you. United aren t ones to throw cash around willy nilly, no way. Looks like RVP is leaving Arsenal. God they love losing their prized assets; no wonder Arsene has a face like a beaten favourite. I like Rodgers as a manager but his main problem at Liverpool will be that Downing, Henderson and Carrol are still there. European champions (pass the bucket) Chelsea will be up there as usual, even though The Predator aka Didier Drogba has gone. Spain took out the Euro 2012 crown. They were ridiculously sexy in dismantling Italy. Xavi is so good it s not funny. Spain play football the way I drive, with precision and with a beard. Petone are still yet to draw this season. With that in mind I will pick them to win 2-1. Then it will be up to the clubrooms for a right old shindig and to have a good chinwag on this historic day. Go the Blues! 6 Life Member: John Bradbury John joined the club as a 7 year old in He was given a half-game each week in the under-12s or junior 6th grade, (our only other team were under- 16s), coached by 1949 Settlers fullback Bob Reid. John s father managed the side and John s major contribution was (at a time when many people didn t have phones) cycling to Gear Street each home game to hassle the 1st team captain and ask him to referee. After a couple of years, the team went down to the junior sevenths, as older boys moving on enabled the team to play in a lower grade. Many parents didn t have cars, and cycling to games as far away as Naenae was the norm for his age group. He can also recall training in the late 1950s on the Petone Recreation Ground near the Scout Hall, using floodlights on Udy Street lampposts. In the 1950s he helped in the Hilton-Petone Tournament with setting up the grounds, with the blanket collection for coin donations, and in selling the programmes. In his last year at Wilford School, John s initiative led to posts being erected in the school ground. From the age of 12 he represented Hutt Valley in various age group teams. He used to enjoy playing for his team and later filling-in for an older or senior team. With his father a long-time executive of the club, John learned about administration at an early age. In 1962, school certificate year, he took on the position of secretary/treasurer of the junior management committee (JMC), at that time looking after eight teams, and introduced more formal management and reporting. Sundays were spent writing a weekly column that he started in the Petone Chronicle, reporting on every game played by a Petone senior or junior team the previous Saturday. At the end of the 1962 season, aged 16, John made his 1st team debut against Stop Out at Te Whiti Park. He was next invited to play in the 1963 Hilton- Petone End of Season Tournament. Petone were the beaten finalists, losing to Marist after the day before having beaten Northern 3-2. John played each game in the tournament, and scored the winning goal against Northern with its five New Zealand representatives. He player/coached the under-16 and under-18 sides through to 1964, and also refereed and helped to coach various younger sides. From 1965, he was a junior coach and also selector/coach of a Hutt Valley representative side. He arranged the first game of football played by and at Hutt Valley High School, in which they thrashed secondary school champions Naenae College. He also represented the club on the Hutt Valley FA, becoming deputy chairman of it from After four years as JMC secretary, he became chairman through At that time the biggest junior club in the Hutt Valley with12 teams, he sought and secured separate financial responsibility for the JMC. He also led by example in fun fund-raising like bottle drives, including mapping the streets for each vehicle and the mailbox drops beforehand, and annual raffle selling. And he was involved in lots of working bees for maintaining and painting the gym, which had opened in April1968. From 1965, John made regular 1st team appearances. The start of the Central League in 1968 and its good record-keeping saw him become the first Petone player to reach 100 Central League games and just the fifth player in the Central Regional League to record 100 games for one club. He played in the midfield, at centre back and finally at right back. He retired from 1st team football at the end of the 1976 season, having across all seasons made well over 170 league appearances. From 1976, John played for, and in some years coached, the successful 2nd and then 3rd teams, and finished his playing days in his mid-50s. John was elected to the management committee from the 1971 season and took over organising the Hilton Petone Tournament: changing it into pre-season; introducing round-robin games; spreading it around numerous grounds; and introducing significant sponsorship funding. From 1977, after a year aside, John managed all aspects of the tournament without the management committee having to be involved through to 1986, when it became part of the Club Manager s duties. In 1972, John was elected chairman, a position he held until 1995, except for a few months in It was a unique position for a 1st team player - very much a case of building a committee and leading people inexperienced in management. Features of his chairmanship were: a high standard of administration, acknowledged by the WFA; establishing an unprecedented period of management stability, which has kept Petone at the forefront of local football; leadership and management in arranging the building and later extensions of the clubrooms, and in the floodlighting of No.3 pitch; ensuring financial sustainability; keeping members informed through a monthly newsletter; introducing a fulltime manager role and making it work; and tinkling the ivories for many great sing-alongs in the clubrooms. In 1975 John was elected a life member of the club for his very intensive and wideranging contribution on and off the field, most often in positions of responsibility. In 1982 he was awarded the Boyden Silver Badge by the Wellington Football Association recognising twenty years administrative and coaching service to football. John was one of Petone s two directors on Hutt Valley United s Board in But was more notable for the very long hours he spent researching and writing much of the Centenary booklet, and organising the Centenary celebrations. In 1995, he was elected President and was very active in that role, giving leadership, guidance and advice, through to In more recent years, his most active contributions have been in thoroughly researching the club s foundation date and revising it to 1898, and researching and writing the club s history to provide information for the Honours Board, the Timeline boards, and articles on all life members for the website. This season John will have completed 60 years of very active club membership.

Petone Memorial Park, snowed out, Tuesday 26 th July 2011 Memorial Park # Memorial Park s transformation from the Gear Island market garden, full of yummy lettuces, to the best playing surface in the Hutt Valley was complete. The groundsman, Arthur Porter, lived in the house across the park and he prepared a manicured pitch like a bowling green for us through every Winter he was there The 1 st team debut on No.1 was a 2-0 loss against Miramar Rangers on 6th May The 1 st team s 15-1 victory over Caledonian Thistle was their highest score achieved on No.1. That season the team scored more than 10 goals in three other home matches, and repeated the effort against the Greeks in 1967 and against Northern in The one and only game ever to be televised live from Memorial Park No.1 was the Hilton-Petone Tournament Final in which Wellington Diamond United beat Naenae by 3 goals to Junior National Cup Football (under 18) came to Memorial No.1 with the Final between Petone and Mt Wellington. The Aucklanders had several NZ youth players in their team and were coached by Clive Herbert, father of All Whites and Phoenix coach, Ricki. The ground was heavy and this probably favoured the home team but it was Mt Wellington who had a golden opportunity to open the scoring when they were awarded a penalty midway through the first half. Petone s goalkeeper, Rudi Feitsma had other thoughts and as the shot was taken he flew to his left to palm the ball away. This fired up the team and in the second half they came out motivated and looking for their chance. It came by way of an error in the Mt Wellington defence. Frances Phelan had chased a through ball and pressured the Mt Wellington defender, Des Dudley, to turn and knock the ball back to his keeper. Unbeknown to Dudley, the keeper had come off his line and was standing directly behind the player. His chase back to the goal ended in a desperate dive which only succeeded in propelling him and the ball through the mud and into the back of the net. The score remained 1 0 until the end and the crowd of cheered the young lads off the field in what was to be the last final of the Junior National Cup. NZFA decided not to continue with the tournament that had mirrored the Chatham Cup as a national knockout competition.

Memorial Park #1 cont.. Early 1980s In the early 1980s a 1 st team game against Wellington Olympic was held up while a sheep that had escaped from the meat works in Petone raced around the park. Eventually it was brothers, Eddie and Frank Phelan, who took control. They tackled the animal and then carried it off upside down, by the legs. Both had experience in animal handling gained from their parents farm in Levin. Their actions provoked several comments from the crowd about meat packs, Frank s previously unseen tackling ability, and whether or not the sheep should be selected the following week Petone had drawn a home match in the Chatham Cup against National League Champions, Gisborne City. The Gisborne squad included seven current All Whites and were coached by the All Whites coach, Kevin Fallon. No goals were scored in the regulation 90 minutes but with scores locked at 0-0 going into the last five minutes of extra-time, the referee awarded a penalty to Petone. All hell let loose amongst the Gisborne players and officials and some Petone players were also brought into the fracas. But one man stood clear of it all, with the ball tucked under his arm. Grant Turner, a former Gisborne player who had returned to Petone, knew that when it all died down, he was going to have to take a penalty that could probably result in the biggest cup upset for many a year. Eventually he placed the ball and the rest, as they say, is history. More than 2500 surrounded the No.1 pitch that day - probably the biggest crowd to attend a match there. Over the years, seagulls have often turned a wet and cut up Memorial No.1 into a quagmire. At Petone Rec. they used to shoot a seagull and hang it from a crossbar. Phil Pickering had amazing success with a more refined method. He would politely request over our PA system Would the seagulls on No.1 please get off the ground as you are causing further damage. This was followed by a Thank you as the seagulls flew away. Entertainment in the clubrooms was fairly limited in those days. Trevor Brooking (current Director of Coaching for the FA) taking a junior coaching session on Memorial #1 in The club fenced the No.1 pitch so as to comply with the strict criteria issued by the NZFA for those clubs vying for entry into the National League to have a charge ground. The Hutt Council agreed to give us year-round access. Inspired by Napier s approach with Park Island, shrubs were planted all around the fence aimed at denying those outside the fence a view and to preserve the aesthetics of the park as a whole. The NZFA shortly thereafter changed the composition and entry requirements for the National League. The Council had selected and planted the rather slow-growing shrubs, which were not assisted (one suspects) by the selective poisoning from year to year of the surrounding weed-growth. The shrubs were removed just a few years ago because of their uneven growth years on, and perhaps the grass on No.1 has been cut for the last time!* * At time of printing...
