Midland RockHounds (13-14) at Corpus Christi Hooks (16-11) Friday, May 3, 2013 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 7:05 pm ON THE RECORD: 10-3 Home 6-8 Road 4-1-3 Series 1-1 Sweeps W 3 Streak 3-2 Last 5 7-3 Last 10 SEEK THE SWEEP: The Hooks made it three in a row over the RockHounds last night, knocking off Midland 6-1. Corpus Christi posted a four-spot in the first on a double steal by Austin Wates and George Springer. Domingo Santana added in an RBI single and Max Stassi, making his Double-A debut, belted his third regular-season pitch over the fence in right-center for a two-run home run. The support was more than enough for David Martinez, who continued his impressive start to the season. Martinez scattered five hits over five scoreless innings. He fanned two and did not walk a batter, throwing 54 of 84 pitches for strikes. Jorge De Leon notched a four-inning save, yielding just one run on three hits. The Hooks added a pair of insurance tallies in the fourth when singles by Jio Mier and Wates opened the inning. Following a sac from Ben Orloff, both came around to score on a Springer single and a grounder off the bat of J.D. Martinez. Corpus Christi has now won four of eight series, splitting three. PAGE 2 SECOND STARTER: RHP Matt Heidenreich is slated to follow Alaniz on the mound this evening. Heidenreich is 1-2 with an 8.15 ERA in 6 appearances. He has struck out 14 and walked 4 in 17.2 innings while the opposition features a.388 batting average. Heidenreich is coming off his best effort of the season. In a start on Monday in Frisco, he yielded just 1 unearned run on 4 hits and 1 walk over 4.0 innings. Heidenrech, who had allowed 5 home runs in his prior 3 outings, was responsible for 5 runs (3 ER) on 6 hits in 2.1 frames April 25 at Midland. In 3 appearances as a second starter, he has permitted 8 earned runs on 15 hits (4 home runs) over 6.2 innings. Originally selected by the White Sox in the fourth round of the 2009 draft, Heidenreich was traded to Houston last July as part of the Brett Myers deal. The 22-year-old right-hander went 12-5 with a 3.95 ERA in 25 starts (26 G) for Winston Salem, Birmingham and Corpus Christi. He was named Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for June 25 to July 2 after going 2-0 with 1 earned run allowed over 16.0 innings, including a complete game shutout. A CL Mid Season All-Star, Heidenreich was promoted to the Barons on Independence Day and yielded 2 runs, 1 earned, over 8.0 frames in his debut. He then scuffled in his next two starts, surrendering 11 earned runs over 10.1 innings. Heidenreich made his Hooks debut on July 26 at San Antonio, holding the Missions to an earned run over 8 frames for the victory. He last 6 innings just once the rest of the way. Overall for Corpus Christi, Heidenreich went 3-1 with a 3.93 ERA in 7 starts (8 G), striking out 26 while walking 7 in 34.1 innings. MR MARTINEZ: Corpus Christi has been bolstered by tremendous pitching this season and David Martinez carried the banner last night. Martinez, 3-0 with a 0.98 ERA in 7 appearances, is listed second on the Texas League leaderboard in ERA. His 3 wins are now tied for 2nd in the circuit and his WHIP of 0.90 ranks 5th. Martinez has not allowed a run in his 4 starts, walking 3 while striking out 10 in 20.0 IP. Opponents are batting just.167 against him when he is first out of the gate. The Hooks, who own the best record in the Texas League, also have the loop s top team ERA (2.44). San Antonio is next in line with a 2.67 mark. THE OTHER MARTINEZ: Astros OF J.D. Martinez, who has been on the DL since April 20 with a sprained right knee, is not in the Hooks lineup tonight. His rehab assignment may continue thru the weekend when Corpus Christi visits San Antonio. He is 3-for-11 with a double and an RBI. Martinez had started 12 of Houston s first 16 games, hitting.244 with two home runs and seven RBIs. Martinez hit.241 with 11 home runs and a club-leading 55 RBIs in 113 games for the Astros last season. The 20th-round pick in 2009 out of Nova Southeastern University was tabbed Houston s Rookie of the Year in 2011. Martinez open the season with Corpus Christi, hitting.338 with 25 doubles, 13 home runs and 72 RBIs in 88 games before making his big league debut on July 30 at Milwaukee. He finished the campaign with the Astros, batting.274 with 13 doubles, 6 home runs and 35 RBIs over 53 contests. Spanning parts of 2 seasons with the Hooks, Martinez batted.324 with 16 home runs and 97 RBIs in 138 games.
