Corpus Christi Hooks (25-21) at Arkansas Travelers (21-24) Friday, May 23, 2014 Dickey-Stephens Park North Little Rock, AR 7:10 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 13-9 Home 12-12 Road 7-4-2 Series 1-1 Sweeps W 3 Streak 4-1 Last 5 7-3 Last 10 PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF: The Hooks, held in check by Drew Rucinski for much of Thursday night, finally broke through in seventh, scoring three two-out runs en route to a 3-1 victory over the Travs. Trailing 1-0, Leo Heras was hit by a pitch from Brandon Sisk to open the frame. Tyler Heineman laced a double down the left-field line, posting a pair in scoring position with no outs. Jio Mier struck out before Telvin Nash worked a four-pitch walk. David Carpenter entered to face Delino DeShields, who jumped ahead 2-0 but popped up to second base for the second out. With Nolan Fontana at the plate, Carpenter uncorked a wild pitch and Heras raced home to tie the game. With the count 2-2, Fontana blistered a sharp single past a diving Alex Yarbrough and into center field, plating two for a 3-1 Corpus Christi advantage. The Hooks made two outs on the bases over the first six frames with Rucinski stranding five. Kyle Smith was sharp on the hill, tossing six innings of one-run ball for his first Double-A victory. Smith allowed four hits and one walk while striking out five. A lead-off double by Adam Melker in the home first resulted in the lone run for Arkansas. Thanks in part to right -fielder Preston Tucker tumbling into the stands for the first out in the seventh, Patrick Urckfitz fashioned two scoreless innings of relief. Michael Dimock struck out Vance Albitz, who represented the tying run, to end the game for his first Double-A save. PAGE 2 ROSTER ROTATION: To make room for RHP Brady Rodgers on Corpus Christi s 25-man roster, the Astros have placed RHP Kyle Smith on the inactive list. FOR STARTERS: Corpus Christi s starting staff has been sensational over the last 4 games. The quarter of Mike Hauschild, Luis Cruz, Tommy Shirley and Kyle Smith have combined to allow 2 runs on 9 hits through 25.1 innings for a 0.71 ERA. They boast 27 strikeouts against 4 walks during this stretch. Hauschild, the reining Texas League Pitcher of the Week, retired the first 14 RockHounds he faced on Sunday afternoon at Whataburger Field. The lefty Cruz followed up that performance by blanking Midland over 6.1 innings in Monday s finale, striking out, at one point, seven in a row. And Shirley retired 18 of the 20 batters he faced in Wednesday s series opener. TOUGH WITH TWO: Corpus Christi has scored 10 runs in this series and 7 of those tallies have come with two outs. The Hooks boast the best average in the circuit with two away and men in scoring position, hitting.261 with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs and 70 RBIs in 211 at-bats. Matt Duffy and Jio Mier are leading the charge with a.400 and.467 batting average, respectively. Nolan Fontana has notched 2 of his 9 2-out RBIs over the last couple nights. No. 2 in the Texas League in this category is the RockHounds, who bat at a.250 clip with men in scoring position and 2 out. ON THE ROAD: A win tonight would pull the Hooks over.500 when away from Whataburger Field and extend the club s road win streak against the Texas League North to 7 games. The lone interdivisional blemish outside of the friendly confines was Corpus Christi s 5-4 loss to Tulsa in 11 innings on Opening Night at ONEOK Field. The Hooks road mark against the South stands at 5-11. IT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE: Corpus Christi has won 3 in a row for the first time since a walk-off 6-5 victory over Midland on April 22 at Whataburger Field. The Hooks have claimed 6 of their last 8 contests, outscoring the opposition 41-32. The longest win streak for the club this year is 6, achieved April 4-10. BAILEY AT THE HELM: Hooks manager Keith Bodie has returned home to Gilbert, Arizona, to attend the high school graduation of his eldest daughter, Brittney. Bodie is expected to rejoin the club tomorrow night in Springdale. Mark Bailey, wearing No. 6, concludes this stint as interim manager tonight. For a second consecutive season, Bailey has acted as the development specialist for the Hooks, working with the club s catchers when the team is at home while touring the other Houston affiliates when Corpus Christi goes hits the road. Tom Lawless, who was originally appointed to the position this season, is currently serving as the interim manager in Oklahoma City. Following eight years as Houston s bullpen coach, Bailey was the Hooks hitting chief in 2010. It marked a return to the Texas League for the first time since 2001, when he coached then-double-a Round Rock. Now in his 17th year as a coach in the Houston organization, Bailey was selected by the Astros in the sixth round of the 1982 draft out of Southwest Missouri State (now Missouri State). A three-year letterman in both baseball and basketball for the Bears, He was a two-time Division II All-American in baseball and played in the Division II College World Series. Bailey caught for 13 seasons professionally, spending portions of seven years in the Major Leagues with Houston and San Francisco. His best season was 1985, when he hit.265 with 10 home runs and 45 RBIs, while starting in 96 games for Houston. Bailey played 57 games for the 1986 National League Western Division champion Astros. A switch-hitter, Bailey became the 13th player in National League history to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game when he clubbed a pair of solo shots at the Astrodome in Houston s 10-9 win over San Diego on September 16, 1984.
