Corpus Christi Hooks (21-15, 63-43) at Midland RockHounds (15-21, 48-58) Sunday, July 28, 2013 Citibank Ballpark Midland, TX 6:00 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 31-22 Home 32-21 Road 14-4-12 Series 5-2 Sweeps W 5 Streak 5-0 Last 5 8-2 Last 10 MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD: Corpus Christi s bullpen retired 22 of the final 23 RockHounds last night as the Hooks pushed their win streak to five with a 7-6 triumph. Preston Tucker broke a 6-6 tie in the seventh with a home run into the rightfield bullpen. The Hooks had established an early 4-0 lead via back-to-back blasts by Max Stassi and Domingo Santana. The RockHounds responded with six unanswered runs - three in the first and three in the second off Ross Seaton. T.J. Geith, recently called up from Lancaster, set down each of the eight men he faced, striking out three. Jonas Dufek, who notched the victory in his Double-A debut, turned in an identical line. Both relievers were bolstered by a pair of outstanding defensive players from Jio Mier at shortstop. Patrick Urckfitz held the line with a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Chia-Jen Lo came on in the ninth and induced a roller up the third base line off the bat of lead-off hitter Tyler Ladendorf. The ball bounced off the bag and kicked past Jonathan Meyer for a bad-hop double. Lo notched the final two outs with the tying run 90 feet away. DEBUT W : RHP Jonas Dufek retired all 8 men he faced during his Double-A debut last night, striking out 3 en route to the win. Promoted from Lancaster on Thursday, Dufek stood 2-2 with a 4.28 ERA in 36 appearances for the JetHawks. He walked 19 and fanned 54 in 48.0 innings, holding the California League to 4 home runs and a.259 batting average. Away from Lancaster s hitter-friendly home park, Dufek notched an ERA of 2.42. Selected by the Astros in the 9th round of the 2011 draft out of Creighton, he was 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA over 8 June appearances, striking out 17 against 4 walks. Dufek pitched all of last year at Lexington where he went 6-5 with a 5.47 ERA in 25 outings (24 starts). He fanned 117 batters, walked 37 and allowed 16 home runs in 126.2 frames. Dufek was also tabbed MVP of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on May 28th after going 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA and leading Creighton to its second tournament crown. ROAD WARRIORS: The Hooks have now won 9 of their last 10 games on the road. Corpus Christi is 10-3 away from Whataburger Field in July and 32-21 on the season. No other Texas League club has a winning road record. The 2013 Hooks are aiming to become the first squad in club history to end the regular year with a road record above.500. GO WEST: The Permian Basin has not been kind to the Hooks over the years. The club sported a 49-75 record (.395) in Midland from 2005-2012. The slide came to a halt in 2013 as Corpus Christi claimed its first season-series victory in West Texas. The Hooks have won 10 of its 15 games at Citibank Ballpark and are in position to notch the first Rocky Town sweep in club history.
