San Antonio Missions (18-19, 54-53) at Corpus Christi Hooks (17-20, 51-56) Monday, July 28, 2014 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 7:10 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 30-24 Home 21-32 Road 10-13-7 Series 3-2 Sweeps L 2 Streak 1-4 Last 5 2-8 Last 10 HOUNDS TAKE SERIES: The RockHounds consistent offensive barrage Sunday night resulted in an 11-3 triumph over the Hooks and secured the series victory at Whataburger Field. Hiroyuki Nakajima set the tone with a three-run home run off Jordan Jankowski in the first. Nakajima handed the Hounds a 4-3 advantage in the third with an RBI double to left. With two away in the fifth, a two-run two-bagger off the bat of Dusty Coleman made it 6-3 Midland. The Hounds scored in three of the final four frames, culminating with a Kent Matthes solo blast in the ninth. Drew Granier earned the victory, spreading three runs and six hits over 5.2 innings. He worked around four walks and struck out two. Omar Duran and Murphy Smith teamed to allow one base runner over the final three innings. The Hooks struck for a couple of runs against Granier in the first. Tony Kemp began the frame with a home run onto the left-field berm. Ruben Sosa followed with an infield single and, two outs and a wild pitch later, Telvin Nash sent a base hit into left, scoring Sosa from third base. Brandon Meredith led off the fourth by belting his first Double-A blast, a no-doubter into the left-centerfield bullpen. Corpus Christi has hit home runs in a season-high seven consecutive games. The Hooks stranded seven on base and went 1- for-7 with men in scoring position. PAGE 2 NASH TO DL, APPEL ARRIVES Telvin Nash has been placed on the disabled list following a collision at first base last night with Kent Matthes. Nash is hitting.228 with a Texas League leading 18 home runs and 35 RBIs in 62 games for Corpus Christi. He heads to the shelf having belted home runs in 3 of the last 4 games. For the month of July, Nash is batting.328 with 10 homers, 20 RBIs and a 1.247 OPS in 20 games. Filling Nash s place on Corpus Christi s active roster is last year s No. 1 overall pick, RHP Mark Appel. The Stanford product is slated to start Wednesday with RHP Chris Devenski following out of the bullpen. Appel, rated the 13th best prospect in all of baseball by MLB.com, went 2-5 with a 9.74 ERA in 12 starts for the JetHawks. His last start for Lancaster came Thursday, when he worked six innings against Stockton. Appel picked up his second victory after he allowed 2 earned runs on 5 hits with no walks and 7 strikeouts. Following an off-season appendectomy that sidelined him for much of Spring Training, he broke camp with the JetHawks, but returned the Astros training facility in Kissimmee, Fla. for just over a month after an April 23 start. Appel made his return to Lancaster May 31 and later strung together 3 straight starts in which he worked 5 innings and allowed 3 earned runs June 22-July 4, going 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA. Owner of the Houston minor league system s best slider entering the 2014 season according to Baseball America, Appel was a two-time Louisville Slugger first team All-American at Stanford and left Palo Alto as the program s all-time strikeout leader. During his 2013 senior season, he went 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA and 4 complete games en route to first team All-Pac 12 conference honors. Appel was drafted 3 times: in the 15th round out of Monte Vista High School in Danville, Calif. by Detroit in 2009, eighth overall by Pittsburgh in 2012 and first overall by Houston last year. He became one of just 17 players in history to be selected in the first round of two different June drafts. WEILAND DEBUTS RHP Kyle Weiland yielded 2 runs on 1 hit and 2 walks in 1.0 IP last night. Prior to joining Corpus Christi Sunday, Weiland, working his way back from a shoulder injury, made 9 appearances (2 starts) between the Gulf Coast League and Tri-City, going 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA. The Austin resident struck out 11 against 2 walks in 12.0 IP. Weiland was acquired by Houston, along with IF Jed Lowrie, for RHP Mark Melancon in a trade with Boston in December 2011. He was originally a 3rdround pick of the Red Sox in 2008 out of the University of Notre Dame. Weiland went 0-3 with a 7.66 ERA in 7 games (5 starts) for Boston in 2011. He won a spot on the Astros 2012 starting rotation but made only 3 starts before being shutdown due to injury. Weiland missed all of 2013 after multiple shoulder surgeries revealed an infection in the biceps tendon. During his recovery, Weiland attended classes at the University of Texas, which he's applying towards a degree in anthropology from Notre Dame. His last minor league action was at Triple-A Pawtucket in 2011. Weiland posted an 8-10 record and a 3.58 ERA in 24 International League starts, striking out 126 against 55 walks in 128.1 IP. DOG DAYS The RockHounds outscored Corpus Christi 31-16 in their series victory at Whataburger Field. Midland hit.252 with 8 doubles and 7 home runs in the 4-game set. The Hooks managed a.248 batting average with 4 doubles and 8 home runs. All but of 1 of the Corpus Christi blasts were solo shots. The margin widens when looking at walks and efficiency with runners in scoring position. The Hounds hit.250 in the clutch while Corpus Christi batted at a.194 clip. Midland walked 29 times in the series, producing 10 additional runs. Meanwhile the Hooks coaxed 15 free passes and 3 came home to score. HOOKS REELING Midland handed Corpus Christi it s 2nd consecutive series loss and the first at home since June 7-10 (series finale at Minute Maid Park) vs. San Antonio. The Hooks have not won a set since a sweep of the Drillers July 5-7. Corpus Christi opened July with an 8-1 record. The club is 5-11 since and has dropped 8 of its last 9 games. Luis Cruz aims to snap the Hooks 6-game skid against San Antonio.
