Springfield Cardinals (4-2, 37-37) at Corpus Christi Hooks (3-3, 45-31) Wednesday, June 26, 2013 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 7:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 23-13 Home 22-18 Road 9-2-10 Series 4-1 Sweeps W 2 Streak 2-3 Last 5 4-6 Last 10 BREAK S OVER: Following the two-day All-Star sabbatical, Corpus Christi returns Whataburger Field for the first of three against the defending Texas League Champion Springfield Cardinals. The Hooks salvaged a split of their series in Frisco with a 6-3 triumph Sunday afternoon. A pair of doubles by Enrique Hernandez and Drew Muren in the first gave CC a 1-0 lead. In the third, George Springer crushed a monster two-run home run to left that exited the ballpark. Promoted to Triple-A following the game, Springer also hit his first Texas League home run at Dr Pepper Ballpark. David Martinez and Mike Foltynewicz were both limited to three innings in anticipation of last night s TL All-Star Game. Martinez allowed a lead-off home run to Zach Zaneski in the third. Foltynewicz earned the victory to improve to 3-0. Patrick Urckfitz authored his second save of the series. The TL South First-Half Champs have taken on new form. RHP Jake Buchanan and Springer are in Triple-A and the minor league RBI leader, Preston Tucker, is now a Hook. The club has also shed its tandem pitching system for a six-man rotation. PAGE 2 HOOKS MEDIA INFORMATION WEDNESDAY, JUNE 26 2013 SPRINGFIELD SOUTH PREVAILS IN SPRINGDALE: The South continued its supremacy over the North last night with a 6-0 victory in the 77th installment of the Texas League All-Star Game at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, AR. OF George Springer was named MVP, going 2-for-3 with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs. C Rene Garcia scored a run, threw out a Northerner attempting to steal and picked off another. Corpus Christi hurlers David Martinez, Jake Buchanan and Mike Foltynewicz each worked a single frame. Springer becomes the 4th Hook to take home MVP honors, joining JB Shuck (2010), Jonny Ash (2007) and Josh Anderson (2006). He is the first CC representative to belt a home run. Corpus Christi s division now stands 7-2 in the TL showcase. ALL-STARS DEPART: Last night, Springer and Buchanan, key cogs in the Hooks first-half title said so long to the Texas League. The Astros announced their promotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City following Corpus Christi s Sunday matinee in Frisco. Buchanan went 7-2 with a 2.09 ERA in 18 games and 13 starts, walking 9 against 44 strikeouts in 82.0 IP. He earned Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Month honors in May after he did not allow an earned run and posted a 4-0 record. Buchanan led the TL in WHIP (0.93), ranked fourth in batting average against (.226) and fifth in innings pitched (82.0). In 2012, the 23-yearold North Carolina State product went 5-6 with a 5.00 earned run average in 19 starts before a move to the bullpen. Houston drafted Buchanan in the eighth round of the 2010 draft. He earned the Astros Minor League Pitcher of the Year award in 2011 after he went 5-10 with a 3.91 ERA for Advanced-A Lancaster. Springer was leading the run producer in the Texas League in the first half of the season, hitting.297 with 19 home runs and 55 RBIs. At the time of his promotion, he ranked among league leaders in hitting (6th), home runs (t-1st), runs batted in (t-2nd), stolen bases (23, t-2nd), hits (81, t-4th), doubles (20, 5th) and runs scored (56, 1st). Springer fell one long ball short of becoming the second Hook to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season. Drew Sutton hit 20 home runs and stole 20 bases in 2008. Houston selected the former Connecticut Huskie with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 draft. Springer played in 22 games for the Hooks in 2012 and hit.219 with two home runs and five RBIs. TUCKER & HALLOCK TO CC: OF Preston Tucker and LHP Kyle Hallock join the Hooks today from Lancaster. Tucker, who currently stands as the top run-producer in the minor leagues, hit.326 with 18 doubles, 1 triple, 15 home runs and 74 RBIs in 75 games for the JetHawks. A California League All-Star, he leaves the circuit ranking among the leaders in batting average (4th), home runs (t-5th), hits (97, t-1st), runs scored (61, t-2nd) and total bases (162, 1st). Tucker featured a.928 OPS, working 29 walks against 45 strikeouts. A 7th-round pick in last year s draft out of the University of Florida, Tucker owns 2 6-RBI performances. He last accomplished the feat on Sunday vs. Rancho Cucamonga, belting a pair of 2-run home runs. He was named CL Player of the Week for May 27 to June 3, going 11-for-29 with 12 runs, 4 doubles, 3 home runs and 19 RBIs. Tucker played 42 games for Tri-City last season, batting.321 with 7 doubles, 8 home runs and 38 RBIs. During his senior season, the left-handed slugger hit.321 and led the Gators with 78 hits. He was second on the club in runs (57), RBIs (50), walks (35), doubles (17) and homers (16). Tucker was a first-team All-SEC selection in 2012 after being a first-team choice in 2011 and a second-team pick in 2010. He was the 2009 SEC Co-Freshman of the Year. Tucker holds school records for games played (265), games started (259), total bases (596), at bats (1,035), hits (341), RBIs (258), doubles (70) and is second in long balls (57). Halllock is now making his 4th stop in 2013. Thru 20 appearances (6 starts) between Quad Cities, Lancaster and Oklahoma City, Hallock is 5-1 with a 4.10 ERA. He has struck out 31 batters while walking 22 in 59.1 IP. His time with the RiverCats was limited to 1 perfect frame of relief. Hallock made 9 appearances and 1 start with the RedHawks, going 1-0 with a 3.73 ERA. He last appeared on Friday for the JetHawks, tossing three shutout innings. The southpaw permitted just 2 hits and struck out 4. A 10th-round pick in 2011 out of Kent State, Hallock is slated to start for the Hooks tomorrow night. OKC SPOT START: After tossing 3 innings of hitless relief Friday in Frisco, the Astros shipped Bobby Doran to Oklahoma City for a spot start. Last night, Doran worked 4.2 frames in Game 2 of the RedHawks twin bill opposite Omaha. He surrendered a 2-out, 3-run home run to former Northwest Arkansas Natural Christian Colon. Doran has already re-joined the Hooks and is slated to start the finale of this homestand against Tulsa. In other news...doran s former tandem mate, Nick Tropeano, has been placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to June 22. LEADING ROLE: 2B Enrique Hernandez has thrived in his first pro starts as a lead-off hitter. Over the last 3 contetsts, Hernandez went 4-for-11 with 1 double, 3 runs and 4 walks. More impressively, Hernandez has seen 72 pitches in those 15 plate appearances. He is batting.545 (6-for-11) in the first inning this season with 4 runs, 1 double, 1 triple and 6 RBIs. Hernandez has now hit in every slot of the batting order sans for 3rd and the cleanup spot.
