NOTES FROM THE NURSE S OFFICE Fall Sports Head Injuries With fall sports underway, it is important that parents/guardians are made aware of the signs and symptoms of a concussion. Even a seemingly mild hit to the head can disrupt neurological functions of a young athlete putting the child at risk for a prolonged and more complicated recovery when a concussion occurs. (Dr. Sherri Provencal, Dept. of Psychiatry at Brown University Warren Alpert Medical School) If your child sustains a head injury it is important that they see a doctor. Severe concussions, although rare, left untreated can lead to brain swelling and even death. Some of the common signs and symptoms of a concussion include: headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and noise, confusion, forgetfulness, loss of balance, dizziness, slurred speech. If your child has any of the above signs and symptoms lasting longer than 15 minutes, they should be taken out of the game, not allowed to continue to play that day, and be evaluated by a doctor before returning to the sport. (Seekonk Public School Policy and Procedure Manual) Have a safe and injury free fall season. Angie Volpe, RN, BSN, MS.

4 Mrs. Libby's Yellow Team Social Studies class has been studying early man. They have had an opportunity to describe a person based on objects that would have survived a fire and found that sometimes that is quite difficult to do based on what is left. They have begun an activity during our supercore class called Foursquare Archaeology. The students will act as archaeologists to determine the time period in which people lived in their particular area based upon the projectile points found. They will be drawing the site, determining the type of points at the site, what types of activities occurred in each part of the site, and then determining the time period in which it was inhabited. I hope they enjoy this activity as much as I enjoy listening to their discussions during it. Next week we will be moving on to an exploration of the transition from hunting and gathering to the beginnings of agriculture. Red Team progress reports are issued on Friday, September 28th. All progress reports are due back by Wednesday October 3rd. If it is brought back on Monday...bonus points will be issued! ATTENTION HURLEY FAMILIES - Drama Club is starting next week! Auditions for ALADDIN JR will take place Tuesday October 2nd and Thursday October 4th, 2:35 to 4:00! In order to audition, your child MUST complete a drama club contract and hand it in to Miss T / Mrs Handfield, or bring it with them to their audition. Forms will be handed out at lunch time (or come see one of the directors!) - - No student will be allowed to audition without a completed contract and auditions are only taking place 10/2 and 10/4! No student will be admitted into the play without an audition. Looking forward to a great Drama year and an awesome play in May! Thank you! Miss T and Mrs. Handfield

5 In 6 th grade math on the Yellow Team, we started our unit on Statistics and Graphs. We created class line plots on the number of pets we own. Some students own more than 10 pets! We also created a class histogram on the number of after school activities we participate in. We have some very busy and involved students on the Yellow team. We will be wrapping up the first half of the Statistics and Graphs unit soon and will be moving on to the second half where one of the concepts we ll be learning about is box- and- whisker plots. Stay tuned. Computer Applications Class News: - 6th grade students who have Computer Applications have been learning about how a computer works, through vocabulary, classroom discussions, a youtube video, and handheld responder review sessions, students have prepared for the difficult written assessment in the coming week. A reminder to those students that further study at home is definitely necessary! - 7th grade has begun researching information about the author of the book their group has chosen to use for several computer skills projects culminating in the making of a movie, a book trailer to promote the reading of the selected novel! - 8th grade is busy researching countries that speak French, Portuguese and Spanish (languages taught at the high school) and are eagerly awaiting their access to the online language learning tool by BYKI, Transparent Language (similar to the well- known Rosetta Stone, but a free online tool). Last call for golfers!! The Seekonk High School Athletic Boosters Golf Outing is this Monday, October 1st at 9:00am. It is not to late to join or donate to this very good cause. Feel free to contact Michele Silva with any questions at mick13@aol.com.

6 8th grade White and Orange teams began the OZ unit on Tuesday, September 18th. We will all be traveling down "roads of yellow brick" literally in the novel and metaphorically in our own lives. During our travels, we will learn not only about "going home" themes and "lions, tigers and bears,"but also about literary terms and reading strategies, writing skills and informational texts. This unit will last until Friday, October 26th. Students are challenged to revise their class notes and read/listen to one or two chapters each night for homework. Enjoy the journey with us:) The first JAZZ BAND rehearsal will be held on Monday, Oct.1st after school in the band room from 2:35-3:25. There are late buses that day. Most books are in (still waiting for more Standard of Excellence Clarinet) so please send in the payment for books ASAP. Please join us for the first HMS Band Parent Meeting on Wednesday, Oct 3 in the band room at 7:00. All are invited to attend. Student Council Elections will be held Thursday, October 4 th. - Wednesday, Oct. 3 is a Day 2. Homeroom will be extended for a few minutes so candidates can make a short speech to their classmates. The following morning, each homeroom can vote for their representative.

The Builders Club The Builders Club, an extension of the Kiwanis organization, has started up again at HMS with new advisors Mrs. Farrow & Miss Cordeiro. The Builder's Club is an organization that does charitable works in the community. Our first meeting was held on September 26, where we designed boxes & posters for our first project "The Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" campaign. This fundraiser will benefit women & her future newborns from a painful disease called tetanus. Money raised will buy vaccines that protect them from a highly preventable disease. We placed donation boxes to each homeroom & other locations throughout the school. The homeroom that collects the most donations will receive a mystery prize. Thank you in advance for sending in loose change found in your house (& couch), car, and pockets.
