Dr. Kevin M. Hurley Middle School Parent Newsletter Education A Journey Without End June 8, 2012 Visit our web page at This newsletter will be sent out weekly by to keep you informed of programs and events at Hurley Middle School. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns at jfargnoli@seekonk.k12.ma.us. Upcoming Dates: It is hard to believe that another school year is almost completed! June 15 8 th grade dance June 18 Last day of school for the school year A message from Dr. Fargnoli At the close of this school year I will be officially retiring after 40 years in education. My years here in Seekonk have been a pleasure. I have had the opportunity to work with a truly dedicated staff and for a wonderful community. I have found this past year personally challenging due to the unexpected changes I have had to endure. I now realize how precious and short life is and I want to take this time to enjoy my family and my good health. Mrs. Westcoat will remain as Assistant Principal and the district will appoint a new principal by next week. Once this appointment is finalized I will announce the person in my final newsletter on June 15 th. I would like to thank all of you for your support over the past four years and I leave you with wishes for good health, happiness, and much success. Sincerely, Dr. Joan C. Fargnoli The Seekonk Town Meeting is June 11 th We need your support for the school budget The Seekonk Town Meeting will be held on June 7 PM in the SHS auditorium. This is the meeting where the school budget and all warrant articles are presented and passed.

PTO News Officers Needed The PTO Board is looking for volunteers to fill the vacant positions of Vice- President and Secretary for the school year. The VP works collaboratively with the President on much of the behind the scenes coordination of events. The Secretary is responsible for recording the details of what is discussed at the monthly meetings. Please consider joining us for the next school year! If you have any questions about the positions please contact Jenn Hess at or School Supplies Program The HMS PTO will once again offer the Staples Schoolkidz Program. This program offers families a way to purchase school supplies in one easy online visit. The program offers a 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade package that contains all school supplies needed for your student to start the next school year. The items contained in the supply packs were specifically designed from lists submitted by the HMS teachers and approved by administration. By using this online ordering process you will save time and money. The Schoolkidz offers discount pricing because of the quantity of items needed to fill orders. The supply pack that you order will be waiting for your student at the middle school on the first day of school. This eliminates the need for shopping for supplies during the "back to school rush" and driving from store to store trying to find the supplies your student needs. You can place your order now, make your payment with a credit card, and that's it! You don't have to do anything else! Please refer to the attached flyer for ordering information. ALL ORDERS MUST BE PLACED BY JUNE 22nd. NO EXCEPTIONS!! This is a date set by Staples and no orders will be accepted online after that date. It is as simple as this: To order your kit(s) online, please follow these simple steps: 1. Go to 2. Enter the school's account number 3. Choose the appropriate grade level kit - REMEMBER TO CHOOSE THE GRADE YOUR CHILD WILL BE ENTERING IN THE FALL! 4. Enter your child s first and last name 5. Add to cart; confirm your order and checkout IMPORTANT NOTE: YOU DO NOT NEED TO SIGN IN OR CREATE AN ACCOUNT WHEN CHECKING OUT. YOU MAY CHECKOUT WITHOUT AN ACCOUNT BY ENTERING YOUR ADDRESS ONLY.

If you have any questions about the program please contact Jennifer Hess at or Fall We would like to let our HMS families know that we will have 2 different fundraisers in the fall for the next school year. First, we will offer the Magazine fundraiser like the one we offered last year, so if you have subscriptions that will be ready for renewal please hold on to them for the September 28 th kickoff. The second fundraiser is a Jump-A-Thon and will be held during Spirit Week. This will be a physical task and classrooms will have the opportunity to compete for prizes. We are in need of somebody to run the Magazine fundraiser and someone to coordinate the Jump-A-Thon. If you are interested in helping with either of the fundraisers please contact Jen Hess at jbhess@att.net. Thank you, Hurley Middle School PTO Band News ELEMENTARY TOUR-TUESDAY, JUNE 12 FOR HMS CONCERT BAND ONLY If you do not have your permission form in by Monday you cannot attend. School Nurse BICYCLE SAFETY School-aged children, 5-18, account for more than 50% of all nonfatal bicycle injuries in Massachusetts. Each year, approximately 5,566 school aged children, are hospitalized or treated in emergency rooms for bicycle injuries. Among this population, most nonfatal bike injuries occur in 10 to 14 year olds; boys are also 3 times more likely to be injured as bicyclists than girls. Most bike-related deaths are associated with head injury. Without proper protection, a fall from a bike can result in a skull fracture or a traumatic brain injury. Approved bike helmets (ANSI or SNELL) have been shown to reduce head injury by as much as 85%, yet in a recent study only 41% of children 5-14 years of age were observed to be wearing helmets. Massachusetts General Law c.85,s.11b(2) requires that a secured, approved, fitted helmet be worn by persons 16 years of age and under who are operating or being carried as a passenger on a bicycle, in-line skates, a skate board, a scooter or other manually-propelled wheeled vehicle. IT is not enough to simply buy a bicycle helmet it should be properly fitted, adjusted, and worn each time you ride. Helmets come in various sizes, just like hats. Size can vary between manufacturers. For the most comprehensive list of helmet sizes according to manufacturers, go to the

Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute (BHSI) site: http// Things to know when selecting a bicycle helmet: Measure your head for size. Try the helmet on to ensure it fits snuggly. Make sure the helmet does not rock side to side or rock forward into your eyes. Sizing pads come with most helmets so make sure to use them if needed. The helmet should sit level on your head and low on your forehead one to 2 fingerwidths above your eyebrow. Center the left buckle under your chin. Adjust the slider on both straps to form a V shape under and slightly in front of the ears. The chin strap should be snug so that no more than 2 fingers fit under the strap. Buy a helmet that fits now, not a helmet to grow into. Replace any helmet that has been outgrown. A BICYCLE HELMET CAN PROTECT YOUR HEAD AND BRAIN ONLYIF YOU WEAR IT EACH TIME YOU RIDE! For more information on bicycle safety, visit the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA) website at: or Jill Dumont, RN, BSN School Nurse Please continue reading for information on a very interesting summer camp for teens, SEEKONK YOUTH SOCCER FALL 2012 REGISTRATION information, The Seekonk Junior Golf League, and the Seekonk Parks & Recreation Summer Programs, and a free summer band program.

The Seekonk Junior Golf League (SJGL) is now accepting players of all ability levels for its 2012 campaign. The League, starting its 10th season, will begin play with Clinics held June 27th and 28 th, and Opening day planned for June 30th. The season will run every Saturday throughout the summer with play concluding the 18th of August. The league was founded by Dan Preston in 2002 with support from local businesses as well as the Seekonk Lions Club, and the Seekonk Recreation Committee. Over 90 plus players registered and on Saturday, July 12th, 2003 the Seekonk Junior Golf League was in full swing! Today, the Seekonk Junior Golf League (SJGL) is a tax exempt, non-profit organization, which allows boys & girls, ages 10 to 16, the opportunity to play golf and receive golf instruction at a low cost during an eight-week period over the summer. The league is open not just to Seekonk residents, but prospective golfers from the surrounding communities.. Special financial consideration is available to those experiencing financial hardship. Now boasting a roster of over 120 junior golfers, the SJGL provides a safe and positive environment for those learning to play the game of golf with their peers. The players are organized into teams, sponsored by local businesses, competing for the rights to the Carner Cup, named after local golf legend and LPGA Hall of Famer, Joanne Carner. The unique scoring system allows for golfers of varying ability levels to contribute to their team either through a relaxed individual play or a more competitive match play format. While the league s home course is Hillside Country Club, located in Rehoboth, MA, other locations throughout the Southern Massachusetts and Eastern Rhode Island are utilized. Registration for the 2012 season is open now through June 1 st on the league s website, The game of golf offers several valuable lessons of life that are embraced and taught to our players. The unspoken rules of golf etiquette reinforce the values of honesty, team play, courtesy, respect and responsibility. The Seekonk Junior Golf League is dedicated to ensure all our players enjoy the game of golf, but also recognize the area s rich golf heritage and instill the values that this great game demands. Come join us for the 2012 season! If you are interested in supporting the league through a donation, please contact the league through the website or use the registration form on the website as their suggested levels for donations.

Fit2cook4Kids Summer Camps CAMP LOCATIONS: SAINT PHILIP SCHOOL 618 Putnam Pike, Greenville, RI TRINITY CHURCH 139 Ocean Avenue, Cranston, RI BROAD ROCK MIDDLE SCHOOL 351 Broad Rock Road, Wakefield, RI CENTRAL BAPTIST 99 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown, RI NORTH KINGSTOWN COMMUNITY CENTER Beach Street, North Kingstown, RI CAMP INFORMATION: Healthy meal preparation with a real chef, fitness with a yoga instructor, and social skills training to prepare for success! For students (age exceptions made) Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, with drop off as early as 8:30 AM. Each week starting July 1 - August 24. Imagine arriving home from work to enjoy a nutritious family meal competently prepared by your child who has also learned how to stay fit and communicate well! OPTIONAL TUITION REBATE You can pay your child to learn how to cook your meals in a simulated work environment by funding a tuition rebate (we can t call it a paycheck). At $3.00 per hour, this incentive/motivator adds up to your child receiving $120 (or any amount you wish to pay), for 40 hours of productive camp attendance. On Friday, each camper receives an envelope containing a live check or a PlayChek. This is tied to an exercise on financial literacy where campers learn about bank account options and discuss how they would budget an income of $120 per week. We know that after 40 hours of training, or one week of camp, the child s self esteem is measurably increased. To have your $20 registration fee waived, be sure to select the option pay by check while registering online at Write Dr. Kevin M Hurley MS in the check memo section to receive the credit.
