6 HEAD COACH JAMIE APICELLA 6 Jamie APICELLA Head Coach 14th Season 6 Jamie Apicella enters his 14th season as the head softball coach at C.W. Post. Since taking over as head coach in 1999, Apicella has transformed the program into a nationally competitive team and has become one of the most accomplished coaches in the region. He has guided the Pioneers to a mark and is the program s all-time winningest coach. The Pioneers have won seven East Coast Conference titles and have qualified for the NCAA Championships in 12 of the last 13 seasons. During the 2007, 2008 and 2011 seasons, Apicella guided the Pioneers to their highest ascent in the history of the program, capturing the East Region title to advance to the College World Series. Playing one of the strongest schedules in the region, Apicella s teams have annually won 30-plus games and C.W. Post s active streak in that category now stands at 16 years. Apicella, who was honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association for reaching 500 wins in 2011, has helped distinguish C.W. Post as one of the premier programs in the country. The Pioneers have averaged 39 wins a season since his arrival in 1999 and Apicella ranks 11th among all active Division II coaches in winning percentage, and 16th among all-time active and inactive coaches. Overall, his winning percentage puts him 49th among all active and inactive coaches and 55th all-time in victories across all three divisions. Apicella has mentored five NFCA All-Americans and 79 All-Conference selections, including nine Players of the Year, three Pitchers of the Year, seven Rookies of the Year and four ECC Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The Pioneers earned NFCA Division II All-Academic team recognition for the past six years. Samantha Yodowitz, who graduated in 2008, pitched for the Philadelphia Force - a former member of the National Pro Fastpitch league - in Apicella has received many honors for his coaching accomplishments. He and his coaching staff have been honored as NFCA Coaching Staff of the Year in 2000, 2002, 2007, 2008 and He was also voted Coach of the Year by the former NYCAC conference in For the past six years, Apicella s squads have earned NFCA Division II All-Academic Team recognition and numerous players have been named to the ECC Commissioner s Honor Roll. C.W. Post advanced to its third College World Series in 2011 after sweeping through the NCAA East regional and defeating Merrimack in a best-of-three series. The Pioneers completed the season with a overall record and finished the year ranked ninth in the final NFCA Top 25. Six players were named ECC All-Conference and Nicole Hagenah was recognized as an NFCA First Team All-American and ECC Rookie of the Year after leading the team with a.452 batting average. Apicella led the 2010 team to its ninth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and the Pioneers posted a season record. C.W. Post finished atop the ECC regular season standings and was ranked in the NFCA national poll throughout the season. Christie Softy put the finishing touches on her stellar career by setting numerous career batting records, including home runs (48), doubles (56) RBI (216) and games played (235). Melissa Medina was one of the premier outfielders during her four years and set new career marks in at

7 bats (747), runs scored (188) and hits (294). The 2009 Pioneers were once again one of the highest ranked teams in the region as they won their second straight ECC title and advanced to NCAA Regional play for the eighth straight year. The Pioneers were ranked as high as No. 14 in the NFCA national poll during the season. Six players were named All-Conference and pitcher Sarah Kiser garnered Pitcher of the Year honors while infielder Kerry Fisher was the Rookie of the Year. Kiser dominated in the pitching circle with an 18-4 record and a conference-leading 1.03 ERA. Softy had a strong year at the plate and was recognized as an NFCA All-Region First Team and ECC First Team selection for the third straight season as well as a Daktronics All-Region First Team selection and ECAC All-Star. Softy, Kiser and Medina were named to NFCA/Louisville Slugger and Daktronics All-Region teams. In 2008, Apicella led his team to a record, setting a new school record for wins for the third straight season en route to a seventh consecutive NCAA Division II Tournament berth. The Pioneers captured their second consecutive NCAA Division II Northeast Region championship, and advanced to the Division II College World Series in Houston, Texas. Yodowitz was named the ECC Player of the Year, and seven players were named to All-Conference teams. Four players earned Daktronics All-Region honors and five players earned NFCA/Louisville Slugger All-Region recognition. In addition, Yodowitz was named an All-American for the second time in her career. In 2007, C.W. Post finished the season ranked No. 8 nationally in the Division II poll, matching the highest ranking in Apicella s tenure. The Pioneers also featured two-time All-American, Yodowitz and Softy, eight All-ECC selections including Rookie of the Year (Softy), and six NFCA All-Region selections saw Apicella guide C.W. Post to a record, including a perfect 18-0 regular season conference record and a 3-0 sweep to win the East Coast Conference Championship. The Pioneers made their fifth consecutive appearance in the East Region Championships and advanced for the second straight year to the final game before finishing as regional runner-up. Danielle Stallone was named the ECC Pitcher of the Year and Jill Fisher was named the ECC Player of the Year. Seven players were named to the All-NYCAC teams and five were named to the NFCA All-Region teams. In 2005, Apicella led the team to 39 victories and a New York Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season title, leading the team to a runner-up finish in the Northeast Region Championships. Apicella originally joined the team as an assistant, but was elevated to the top spot shortly before the start of the 1999 season. Prior to his arrival, Apicella spent three seasons in the coaching box for the C.W. Post baseball team. He was a three-year standout baseball player for C.W. Post, compiling a batting average of over.350 with 21 home runs and 126 runs batted in for his career. His 49 RBI in 1994 ranks as the fifth best single-season total in school history, while his 113 total bases ranks fourth. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1994 and played in the Giant s minor league system, and was inducted into the C.W. Post Baseball Hall of Fame in February 2000, in recognition of his achievements on the field. He was also inducted into the Smithtown Hall of Fame. Apicella serves on the NCAA East Regional Advisory Committee and is in his second term as the NFCA East Region Top 25 Committee representative. In addition to his coaching and associate athletic director duties at C.W. Post, Apicella is the owner and director of the New York Softball Academy. Apicella and his wife Kimberly reside in Holbrook, N.Y., with their two children, Madison (7) and Alexander (5). 9 Matt WHITTINGTON Assistant Coach Second Season Tracey POWELL Assistant Coach Second Season Matt Whittington begins his second season on the softball staff. He oversees strength and conditioning, outfield and the pitching staff. Whittington previously served for two seasons as an assistant on the C.W. Post baseball staff. The 2011 softball team posted a record, won the East Region Championship and advanced to the College World Series. The Pioneers ended the year ranked ninth in the nation, along with a 1.67 team ERA, which was 14th nationally. The 2011 team featured two All-Americans, three All-Region selections, and six ECC All-Conference members. The coaching staff received the NFCA East Region Coaching Staff of the Year Award. During his time with the baseball team overseeing strength and conditioning and assisting with the pitching staff, the 2010 team set a school record for wins (32), was ranked third nationally with a 2.99 ERA, and featured the ECC player of the year and one MLB signee. That year, the team won both the ECC regular season and tournament championships, and went on to win the program s first regional game in 25 years. Whittington came to C.W. Post with an impressive baseball resume, as he played for the University of Notre Dame from He was part of a Fighting Irish squad that won the 2004 Big East Conference Championship, advanced to the NCAA Regional Final, and was ranked second nationally at one point during the season. A native of Melbourne, FL, Whittington was inducted into the Melbourne Central Catholic Baseball Hall of Fame. He currently serves as Assistant Director of the New York Softball Academy. He is a member of the NFCA, and serves on the Division II Recruiting Committee. Whittington graduated with a Political Science degree from Notre Dame in 2007, and recently completed his master s degree in Sports Management from St. John s University. He resides in Huntington, N.Y. Tracey Powell enters her second season as an assistant on the softball staff. She works with the catchers and assists with all aspects of offense and infield play. She currently serves as the head instructor at the Frozen Ropes Training Center in Garden City. She previously served as an assistant coach of the Razorbacks, a women s fastpitch 18 and older club team in Lancaster, Pa. She also played international softball in China in As a collegiate athlete, Powell s primary position was catcher when she was a member of the Big South Conference member, Liberty University, in Lynchburg, Va. from She graduated with a degree in Kinesiology: Exercise Sciences in Julie SOVIERO Pitching Specialist Second Season PIONEER COACHING STAFF Julie Soviero begins her second season at C.W. Post. She has mentored numerous Long Island college-bound pitchers and will work with the Pioneer pitching staff. Soviero has over 15 years of pitching experience and 12 years of teaching experience. She was a four-time Academic All-American while pitching for Division I Manhattan College and graduated as the class valedictorian in She was the recipient of the 2001 NIT Student/Athlete Award. Her past coaching experiences have come overseas as a pitching coach for the Italian Professional League. Soviero also serves as a contributing writer for Baseball Player Magazine and The Sandlot Magazine and is a certified personal trainor 9 9

10 2012 SEASON OUTLOOK 10 Senior Kerry Fisher C.W. Post head coach Jamie Apicella is entering his 14th season at the helm of the Pioneers and his program could not be in a better place. Since 2007, three of Apicella s teams have clinched NCAA East region titles to advance to the World Series. Last season s squad swept through the NCAA regionals and finished the season with a overall record. Apicella and his assistant coaches Matt Whittington, Tracey Powell, and Julie Soviero were recognized as the East Region Coaching Staff of the Year and Apicella collected his 500th career victory. This year s roster size is the largest of any of Apicella s teams in his career with 22 players and he is confident and enthusiastic about the team s potential. The offense from top to bottom is loaded with power and speed and Apicella predicts he will have a lot of options on offense. Overall, the team has a renewed energy this year and boasts a group of newcomers who will be impact players. The Pioneers reached their goal of advancing to the World Series last season and are hungry for another chance to win a national Senior Kendall Bright title. Pitching One of the biggest question marks this season is pitching after both of last season s pitchers Sarah Kiser and Christina Berardi graduated, but Apicella hopes to get over that hump quickly as he and Whittington have assembled an all-star pitching staff that will challenge the region s best hitters. Freshman Megan Salcido (Brawley, Calif.) is a promising rookie that has an array of pitches to make her effective in the circle. She had a positive fall campaign, including 14 scoreless innings pitched against Stony Brook, and is ready to settle in and make an impact this season. Apicella brought in another big game pitcher in sophomore Liz Weber (Brightwaters, N.Y.), who was a Northeast-10 First Team selection while playing at LeMoyne last season. Weber was also the New York State Pitcher of the Year her senior year of high school at Bay Shore. She also had a strong fall and had a strong command of the strike zone, which makes her an immediate difference maker. 10 Senior Kristen Morcone Senior Hayley Bettles (Surrey, British Columbia) has the potential to be a No. 1 or No. 2 starter and will compete for innings this spring. Freshmen Catherine Havens (Eastport, N.Y.) and Nicole Ehlinger (Hauppauge, N.Y.) had success pitching in the fall and will also compete for innings this spring. Junior Linda Amarante (Cheshire, Conn.) is also an option as a left-handed specialist and could see time at first base. Catcher The catching position is deep with talent this season with senior Kristen Morcone (Milford, Mass.) expected to be the starter behind the plate. Morcone works well with the pitching staff and is a vocal team leader with a tremendous presence around her teammates. Junior Nicole Capella (Shirley, N.Y.) was an ECC Second Team selection last season. She is a good defensive catcher with a strong arm and will see time behind the dish and in the lineup. Newcomer Aly Dzierzynski (Deer Park, N.Y.) was a bright spot during the fall and Apicella likes her potential. With her power at the

11 Senior Krysta Palazzo plate, she is deserving of being in the lineup at catcher or as a designated player. Senior Kim Kessel (Glen Cove, N.Y.) will provide solid depth as the fourth catcher on the roster and could also see time in the lineup as a DP. Infield Sophomore Nicole Hagenah (Commack, N.Y.), who was voted the 2012 ECC Preseason Player of the Year by the league s coaches, had a monstrous freshman season at the plate, batting.452 with 14 home runs and 62 RBI. The NFCA First Team All-American will make the switch from third base to shortstop this season and will continue to challenge opposing pitchers from the plate. Hagenah s move to short opens up the third base position for sophomore Alexis Gonzalez (Hauppauge, N.Y.), who transferred from Siena and was a standout player at Hauppauge. Gonzalez, who is expected to bat third in the lineup in front of Hagenah, is a 5-tool player with tremendous power and speed on offense and great range on defense, and will solidify the hot Junior Nicole Capella corner. Senior Kendall Bright (Manlius, N.Y.) had a breakout season in 2011 and improved her offensive numbers enough to garner ECC First Team as well as NFCA First Team All-Region and Daktronics Inc. Third Team All-America honors. She is expected to bat fifth in the lineup and should put up outstanding numbers again this season. Junior Kaci Hopkins (New Egypt, N.J.) has an outstanding glove at first base and the ability to play small ball. She had an outstanding glove at first base and provided power at the plate while batting in the 2-hole. Junior Nicole Fierro (East Hampton, N.Y.) has been a solid utility player in the infield and saw time at shortstop last season. She will challenge for multiple positions this season, including shortstop and third base. Sophomore Angela Carmine (Westbury, N.Y.) proved to be a valuable pinch hitter last season. She will provide depth at second base and will have a lot of pinch hitting opportunities. Apicella can also call on sophomore Andrea Smith (Milford, Mass.) to fill in at 11 Junior Kaci Hopkins multiple infield positions and she will challenge for a starting role at first, third and shortstop. Outfield The Pioneers outfield is one of the most talented in the region and with only three positions and five available players, there will be stiff competition. Senior Kerry Fisher (Barto, Pa.) returns to patrol centerfield. Fisher is the veteran of the group and enters her third straight year in the outfield. She earned ECC Second Team all-conference honors last season and her timely hitting was lethal, especially during the NCAA regionals. Defensively, her speed allows her great range to haul in long fly balls. She is primed to finish her career with an outstanding season that could earn her postseason recognition. Sophomore Carly Chamberlain (Nesco, N.J.) earned ECC Second Team honors in her rookie season last year and returns this season in great physical shape. 12 2012 SEASON OUTLOOK 12 Junior Nicole Fierro Cliff, N.Y.) had a slow start to the fall season due to an injury but is the leading candidate to play right field. She found her stride as a hitter last season and is swinging the bat well. Sophomore Jessica Julich (Kings Park, N.Y.) has a strong throwing arm and had a very successful fall campaign. She showed power at the plate last season with multiple extra base hits and may see starting opportunities in the lineup. Freshman Samantha Miller (East Meadow, N.Y.) impressed the coaches during the fall. She is described by Apicella as a scrappy hitter who puts the ball in play and will vie for time in the outfield. In addition to her pitching duties, Havens will also challenge for starting time in center and left field. She has an accurate throw and is one of the most versatile players on the team. With the improvement of teams in the ECC, the overall competition in the East is getting stronger. The Pioneers open their season on March 4 at the Spring Rebel Games in Kissimmee Fla. against St. Cloud and Ferris State. They will also see a College World Series rematch against Saginaw Valley as well as matchups against CWS participant Minnesota-Mankato as well as University of the Sciences- 12 Sophomore Carly Chamberlain Philadelphia, Ashland, Seton Hill, Northwood and California (Pa.). C.W. Post returns to open up a four-game homestand, beginning March 15 against Dominican and followed by Southern Connecticut (March 17), American International (March 18) and Queens (N.Y.) on March 20 to open ECC play. Additional non-conference opponents include Adelphi (March 22), Merrimack (March 24), Southern New Hampshire (March 25), New Haven (April 4) and Caldwell (April 18). The ECC Championships will be hosted by the school with the highest seed, beginning April 26 with NCAA Regional play starting May 4. 37 In July of 2006 the conference formerly known as the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference adopted a new name, the East Coast Conference (ECC), and branding, reflective of the growth the league experienced since debuting in The conference was formed to enhance intercollegiate athletic competition among member institutions and to assist them in integrating their athletics into their academic program in a fiscally sound way. 51 buildings and grounds. David Steinberg - President, Long Island University Dr. David J. Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since The son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of Manhattan s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the Philippines and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis University as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in The author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His first book, Philippine Collaboration in World War II, won the University Press Award in The Philippines: A Singular and a Plural Place, now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as the best singlevolume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present. He also edited and co-authored both editions of In Search of Southeast Asia, one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the world to co-author The Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia, a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addition, he is a co-author of Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds, which was published in Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies, the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the C.W. Post Campus. The couple has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accomplishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. His greatest pleasure: watching his grandchildren grow. Paul H. Forestell - Provost, C.W. Post Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal scientist, was appointed provost of the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University in July A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacific Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University, and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at C.W. Post. As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduate and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, financial aid, athletics, student affairs, public safety, and His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at C.W. Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and field research opportunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior. LIU/C.W. POST ADMINISTRATION Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor s degree in psychology and philosophy in 1972 and a master s degree in experimental psychology in He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in He is the author of several peer-reviewed science articles and four books, including Humpbacks of Hawai i: The Long Journey Back

52 Bryan Collins enters his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at C.W. Post. Under Collins leadership, the Pioneers athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels of athletic performance and academics. During Collins tenure, the Pioneers have achieved both athletic and academic success. Notable achievements include 26 conference titles as well as NCAA championship titles from the 2007 women s lacrosse and 2009 and 2010 men s lacrosse teams. DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS - BRYAN COLLINS This past season, the men s and women s cross country, women s swimming, men s lacrosse, and softball teams all participated in NCAA tournaments. C.W. Post boasts some of top-ranked programs in the country that are frequently ranked in national polls. The Pioneers finished first in the East Coast Conference Commissioner s Cup standings for the second Cup win ( ) during Collins tenure. Prior to the academic year, the football and field hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Off the field, Collins has included community service as a part of his players responsibilities. Among the efforts since his arrival have been visitations to the St. Mary s Children s Hospital in Bayside, N.Y., while also volunteering with other charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the academic year, C.W. Post student-athletes completed over 3,200 hours of service. Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic achievements in the classroom. In addition, C.W. Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program. During , Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete awards banquet to recognize both athletic and academic success. The department also established an Academic Honor Roll to honor student-athletes who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average. Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf on Hickox Field as well as a brand new state-of-the art sound system for the stadium. In addition, all of the outdoor athletic fields have undergone improvements to their playing surface. The Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basketball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations staff. A former student-athlete at St. John s University, Collins played linebacker on the Red Storm s football team and was the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. John s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifice in seeking to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor s degree in Business Administration in Collins and his wife, Patti, reside in Sayville, N.Y. with their son, Tyler (16) and daughter, Megan (11)
