LOS ANGELES DODGERS CLIPS WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 2015 LA TIMES The 20 greatest Dodgers of all time, No. 18: Gil Hodges By Houston Mitchell We asked you to list your choices for the 10 greatest Dodgers of all time. You could vote via comment, Facebook, Twitter or . And vote you did. We received an amazing 14,383 ballots. So many, that we have decided to expand the list from the top 10 to the top 20. You were asked to rank your top 10 in order. We assigned points, with your choice for first getting 12 points, second getting nine points, third getting eight points, all the way down to one point for 10th place. Each weekday here, we will unveil the top 20, one at a time, until we reach No. 1. So without further ado: No. 18: Gil Hodges (No first-place votes, 11,344 points) Why isn't Gil Hodges in the Hall of Fame? The man is an eight-time All Star, hit 370 home runs, hit.273 with an on-base percentage of.359, is one of only 16 people to hit four homers in one game, was an integral part of two World Series championships as a first baseman and managed the Miracle Mets to the 1969 World Series title. Subscribe to our free Dodgers newsletter here OK, we're supposed to be focusing on his Dodgers career here. So, for the Dodgers he ranks 15th in slugging percentage (.488), fourth in games played (2,006), fifth in runs scored (1,088), ninth in hits (1,884), ninth in doubles (294), second in homers (361) and second in RBIs (1,254). He was a key member of the 1955 and 1959 World Series title teams. He won three gold gloves at first base, and would have had more, except they didn't start awarding gold gloves until near the end of his career. Hodges died of a heart attack in 1972 at the age of 49. After his death, many of his former Brooklyn teammates talked about what a great person and player he was.

Jackie Robinson: "He was the core of the Brooklyn Dodgers." Duke Snider: "Gil was a great player, but an even greater man." Don Drysdale: "Gil's death absolutely shattered me. I just flew apart. I didn't leave my apartment in Texas for three days. I didn't want to see anybody. I couldn't get myself to go to the funeral. It was like I'd lost a part of my family." No. 19 Don Sutton (No first-place votes, 10,332 points) You know you have a rich history when your team's all-time leader in wins and strikeouts can finish only as the 19th-best Dodger in history. Sutton pitched for the Dodgers from 1966 to 1980 and again in He leads the team in wins (233), games as a pitcher (550), innings pitched (3,816.1), strikeouts (2,696), shutouts (52) and losses (181). Sutton was the Dodgers' opening-day starter from 1972 to His seven opening-day starts tie him with Don Drysdale for most all-time for the Dodgers. Sutton's numbers were downplayed by some voters because of his longevity, with some voters saying that the only reason he is the career leader in so many categories is because he pitched for so long, with some not considering him to ever be an ace of the staff. Sutton was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 and had his number (20) retired by the Dodgers the same year. No. 20: Kirk Gibson (no first-place votes, 9,421 points) Gibson received a late surge of votes, probably due to his recent announcement that he has Parkinson's disease. The late surge moved him past Hall of Famer Zack Wheat for the No. 20 spot. Gibson is here for one reason and one reason only: The Home Run. The Oakland A's were heavily favored to defeat the Dodgers in the 1988 World Series, and it looked as if Oakland would move one step closer to the title in Game 1. With the A's leading, 4-3, closer Dennis Eckersley came on to pitch the ninth inning. After retiring the first two batters, Eckersley issued a walk to pinch-hitter Mike Davis, bringing a hobbled Gibson to the plate to bat for reliever Alejandro Pena. Gibson had two bad legs (a pulled left hamstring and a swollen right knee) and hadn't been expected to play at all in the game.

Gibson fouled off several Eckersley pitches, hobbling around the plate after every swing. It looked hopeless. Even if he hit the ball, it didn't seem like he would be able to run to first base. With the count 2-and-2, Gibson fouled off several pitches before taking ball 3 as Davis stole second. Gibson then drove the next pitch, a backdoor slider, into the right field bleachers to win the game. The Dodger Stadium crowd was as loud as it has ever been as Gibson limped around the bases, pumping his fist as he rounded second. The homer gave the Dodgers a 5-4 victory. It was Gibson's only at-bat of the series, which the Dodgers won in five games. By the time Kirk Gibson reached his locker after Game 1, bullpen coach Mark Cresse had written "R. HOBBS" on a piece of paper and taped it over Gibson's nameplate, a reference to the fictional slugger played by Robert Redford in "The Natural." In interviews after the game, Gibson said that Dodgers scout Mel Didier had provided a report on Eckersley that claimed with a 3 and-2 count against a left-handed power hitter, one could be absolutely certain that Eckersley would throw a backdoor slider. Gibson said that when the count reached 3 and-2, he stepped out of the batter's box and, in his mind, could hear Didier's voice, with its distinctive Southern drawl, reiterating that same piece of advice. And that was enough to lift a guy who played only three seasons in L.A. into a spot among the 20 greatest Dodgers of all time. You can watch the entire bottom of the ninth inning of that game in the video above. Watch Giancarlo Stanton hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium By Houston Mitchell Miami's Giancarlo Stanton became only the fourth player in history to hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium when he absolutely crushed a Mike Bolsinger pitch in the first inning on Tuesday. Though the run ended up being meaningless, as the Dodgers routed the Marlins, 11-1, it's still an impressive sight to behold. Subscribe to our free Dodgers newsletter here Stanton joins Willie Stargell (who did it twice), Mark McGwire and Mike Piazza as the only players to accomplish the feat. You can watch it in the video above.

Dodgers get season-high 21 hits in 11-1 win over Miami Marlins By Dylan Hernandez As Giancarlo Stanton rounded the bases at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, the fans there did something they rarely do when a visiting player hits a home run. They applauded. Stanton unofficially became the fourth player to ever send a baseball out of the 53-year-old stadium in a game, his estimated 478-foot blast off Mike Bolsinger bouncing off the back of the metal roof covering the left field pavilion and presumably landing in a concourse that was previously part of the parking lot. The last player to hit the ball out of the ballpark was Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire, who did it in 1999 while playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Mike Piazza did it in Willie Stargell did it twice, in 1969 and But the Miami Marlins' $325-million right fielder couldn't defeat the Dodgers' $270-million roster on his own. Not even close. Stanton's first-inning blast accounted for the Marlins' only run of the night as the Dodgers extended their winning streak to five games with an 11-1 victory. The Dodgers won in a familiar manner. They received a solid start from a triple-a call-up, as Bolsinger limited the Marlins to a run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings. The opposing starting pitcher, former Dodger Dan Haren, lasted only 4 1/3 and was charged with six runs and 11 hits. Six Dodgers recorded multi-hit games, including Howie Kendrick and Andre Ethier, who both homered. The team finished the game with a season-high 21 hits, five of them by Ethier and four by Kendrick. Ethier drove in three runs. The Dodgers are now Their lead in the National League West over the second-place San Francisco Giants is up to 5 1/2 games. The only team in baseball with a better record is the St. Louis Cardinals, who are Considering everything that has gone wrong for the Dodgers, Manager Don Mattingly acknowledged he was surprised by the team's record. All-Star right fielder Yasiel Puig is on the disabled list and isn't expected back any time soon. Puig underwent an MRI examination Monday that confirmed suspicions he again strained his left hamstring while on a minor league rehabilitation assignment over the weekend.

"Just kind of what we thought," Mattingly said. "He's had a little bit of a setback." Puig first injured the hamstring April 13. He wasn't in the lineup for four of the next five games and landed on the disabled list April 26. Puig is part of a disabled list that would have crippled most teams. Fellow Dodgers outfielder Carl Crawford is sidelined with a torn side muscle. Two starting pitchers, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brandon McCarthy, are down. Ryu hasn't pitched this season because of a shoulder irritation. McCarthy underwent a season-ending elbow operations. Closer Kenley Jansen had a foot operation before the start of spring training and isn't expected to be activated until Saturday. The Dodgers' record is a credit to the team's depth. Ethier, Scott Van Slyke and Alex Guerrero have stepped into the outfield positions that belonged to Puig and Crawford. Van Slyke, who hit a walk-off home run the previous night and raised his average to.373 with a three-hit game, batted eighth the last two games. "That's a pretty good eighth-hole guy," Mattingly said. As well as the Dodgers have played, Mattingly said he views Puig and Jansen's returns as important. "I think over the long period of time, it will kind of play itself out," Mattingly said. You would not be as good if you don't have all your guys. "It's hard to say you're going to be better without Yasiel. You can play well and we can possibly win the whole thing and not know if you're still going to be a better club. I think everybody wants to be full strength. We'd like to be able to have Yasiel, we'd like to have Kenley." Dodgers make Miami's Dan Haren pay in return to Dodger Stadium By Dylan Hernandez KEY MOMENT: The Dodgers broke the game open with a four-run fifth inning that increased their lead to 6-1. Jimmy Rollins led off the inning with a popup single and advanced to second base on a wild pitch by Dan Haren. With one out and Rollins at third, Adrian Gonzalez was struck by a pitch to put runners at the corners. Alex Guerrero doubled in Rollins, after which Yasmani Grandal singled in Gonzalez and

Guerrero. Left-hander Brad Hand replaced Haren with runners on first and second base, and promptly gave up a run-scoring single to Scott Van Slyke. ON THE MOUND: Mike Bolsinger threw a pitch that Giancarlo Stanton hit out of Dodger Stadium, but was otherwise solid. Bolsinger, who was promoted from triple-a Oklahoma City earlier in the day, pitched 5 2/3 innings and was charged with one run and five hits. He struck out three. Paco Rodriguez recorded the final out of the sixth inning. Sergio Santos pitched the seventh inning, Juan Nicascio the eighth and J.P. Howell the ninth. AT THE PLATE: The Dodgers collected a season-high 21 hits. Howie Kendrick hit a home run in the third inning and Andre Ethier hit one in the fourth. Ethier had five hits, which tied a career high. Kendrick had four hits. Guerrero and Van Slyke each had three. Haren, whom the Dodgers traded to the Marlins over the off-season, lasted only 41/3 innings and was charged with six runs. EXTRA BASES: Bolsinger replaced outfielder Chris Heisey on the active roster. Heisey was optioned to Oklahoma City late Monday night. UP NEXT: Carlos Frias (3-0, 2.13 ERA) will face the Marlins and Jarred Cosart (1-3, 3.67) on Wednesday at at 4:45 p.m. at Dodger Stadium. TV: SportsNet LA; Radio: 570, Dodgers crush Miami Marlins with 21-hit attack in 11-1 win By Steve Dilbeck Neither an absolutely stupefying, Paul Bunyanesque home run from Giancarlo Stanton, the return of another old friend nor having to reach down for yet another spot starter could deter the Dodgers Tuesday. After Stanton hit a towering solo home run an estimated 478 feet in the first inning that club officials said hit the back of the awning covering left field, you could say the Dodgers recovered nicely. They went on to dominate the rest of the night, beating the Marlins, 11-1, behind a season-high 21-hit attack that ruined the Dodger Stadium return of former teammate Dan Haren, which seemed only fair since they are paying his $10-million salary. Stanton made Haren feel just fine in the first when he hit his rocket out to left. He hit it so hard, most lost sight of the ball. Only three players have unofficially hit a home run out of Dodger Stadium on the fly -- Willie Stargell (twice), Mike Piazza and current Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire. After Stanton's blast, however, everything in the night belonged to the Dodgers who won their fifth consecutive game.

The Dodgers took back the lead with homers of their own. Howie Kendrick hit a solo shot in the third to tie it and Andre Ethier hit another in the fourth. Ethier finished the night with five hits and three RBIs, and Kendrick with four hits. The Dodgers chased Haren (4-2) with four runs in the fifth. Haren, Dee Gordon and Miguel Rojas were traded to the Marlins in the off-season for left-hander Andrew Heaney, reliever Chris Hatcher, Enrique Hernandez and catcher Austin Barnes. Then the flood just kept pouring down on the Marlins in the sixth, the Dodgers scoring five more times against the Miami bullpen. Every Dodgers position player had at least one hit and six had at least two. The beneficiary of all this was right-hander Mike Bolsinger, making his second spot star for the Dodgers. He got his jaw back off the ground after Stanton's blast to pitch an effective 5 2/3 innings. He allowed five hits and walked two, striking out three. The Dodgers bullpen continued to its strong play, Paco Rodriguez, Sergio Santos, Juan Nicasio and J.P. Howell holding the Marlins scoreless the final 3 1/3 innings. The Dodgers increased their baseball-best run differential to plus-64 and their home record to They are the first Dodgers team in the modern era to start a season 15-2 at home. DODGERS.COM Pederson doesn't want to be mentioned with his idols yet By Lyle Spencer LOS ANGELES -- An off-hand remark caught Joc Pederson's attention and produced a swift rebuttal. Knowing it's wildly premature, he said he is adamantly opposed to including his name in the same sentence with Major League Baseball's official home run king, similarities in hitting approach notwithstanding. Reprimand accepted. But the Dodgers' youthful center fielder said nothing about Bobby Bonds, who several generations ago set the template for Pederson's future leadoff profile while teaching the game to Joc's favorite player. Since moving from the bottom to the top of the Dodgers' lineup, Pederson has been a remarkable source of walks, home runs and strikeouts. His boyhood hero's dad, Bobby Bonds, had a.275/.361/.480 career slash line and 177 home runs in the leadoff role across a 14-year career with nine clubs. Growing up in Palo Alto, Calif., approximately 35 miles south of San Francisco's AT&T Park, Pederson cheered the Giants' left fielder who also is the all-time walks leader -- with 799 fewer singles than Hank

Aaron. Calling Bobby's son "the greatest player of all time," Joc seemingly wouldn't be interested in the compelling case for Willie Mays, Aaron's contemporary and Bobby Bonds' teammate and mentor. Through six weeks, Pederson is delivering at a high level for the National League West leaders. His production is similar to that of Nationals star Bryce Harper, who has been all the rage with a surge of home runs accompanying a dramatic rise in free passes. Pederson, with 28 walks, trails MLB leader Harper by one. Pederson has a.422 on-base percentage and a.582 slugging mark, compared to.442 and.675, respectively, for Harper. These guys are on the attack all day long. Pederson's nine homers have him tied for sixth in the Majors, and he's also sixth in strikeouts with 43. Pederson, who turns 23 in eight days, is six months older than Harper. Both were taken in the 2010 First- Year Player Draft out of high school -- Pederson in the 11th round, No. 352 overall, Harper in the first round, No. 1 overall. Harper was 19 when he made his Major League debut in 2012 for the Nationals at Dodger Stadium. This is in his fourth season in the Majors, after playing just 139 Minor League games. Pederson made his MLB debut last September at 22 with 441 games of Minor League experience. With their glut of quality outfielders, the Dodgers had no need to rush Pederson, sparing him some of Harper's early scuffles. While neither Harper nor Pederson has reached Mike Trout's level, it's unfair to compare anyone with the Angels' superstar -- just as it was with Mays. Pederson eventually could evolve into a left-handed version of Trout, but he swats away that notion as firmly as any link to his boyhood idol. "He's the best player in the game right now," Pederson said of Trout. "I'm just trying to compete." There was a fascinating interplay between the two in Arizona during a Cactus League game this spring. Pederson launched a home run to the left of dead center field at Tempe Diablo Stadium. Trout stepped up and, just to show he's the boss, planted one in the same location -- at least 20 feet farther. "I remember that," Pederson said. "He introduced himself to me. He's the best. I'm just trying to be the best I can be." Like Trout, Pederson has a visible confidence and a natural swagger. You get the sense that this most humbling of games will bring neither player to his knees. Trout grew up in Millville, N.J., with Derek Jeter as his favorite player, and it shows. Aware of his stature, Trout is responsive to fans and media, embracing the prospect of succeeding Jeter as the face of the sport.

When he broke in with the Angels in 2011, playing sparingly and nowhere close to his standards, Trout kept a low profile. He spoke rarely and was always respectful. Deep down, he must have been thinking, "My time will come." Pederson, like Trout, has acquired the respect of teammates with his youthful enthusiasm and desire to learn the game's finer points. "He's a good kid," Dodgers second baseman Howie Kendrick said. "He works hard. He's good, and he's going to get better." When Trout ascended to greatness with stunning swiftness in 2012, Kendrick dressed right next door in the home clubhouse. "In demeanor, attitude, they're very similar," Kendrick said. "They love to play. Mike is an unselfish superstar. Joc is just getting started." Dodgers highly perceptive co-ace Zack Greinke has been impressed with Pederson's development. "Things he struggled with last year when he came up, he's made adjustments," Greinke said. "Even though he didn't hit [.143 in 38 plate appearances], he still had a high [.351] on-base percentage. Any time you're facing someone with his power, you can't just throw a pitch down the middle. He's done a good job of being selective and going after his pitch." Dodgers veterans such as Adrian Gonzalez are keeping Pederson grounded. "He's in over his skis," Gonzalez said through a wide smile recently after one of Pederson's brilliant performances. Gonzalez was joking, but the kid is a rookie -- surely unworthy, for now, of being mentioned in the same sentence as Barry Bonds. Ethier, Dodgers drub Fish with 21 hits By Joe Frisaro and Ken Gurnick LOS ANGELES -- Giancarlo Stanton launched a historic blast in the first inning at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, but after that it was all Dodgers in a 21-hit attack in an 11-1 rout of the Marlins. Andre Ethier matched a career high with five hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs as Los Angeles won its fifth straight. Howie Kendrick also homered and had three hits as the Dodgers easily overcame a prodigious shot by Stanton that cleared the Dodger Stadium left-field pavilion, believed to

be only the fifth home run ever hit out of the 53-year-old ballpark. It traveled a projected 475 feet, according to Statcast. "We needed to hang in there, and we couldn't slow them down," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "After the fifth inning, the momentum changed. We couldn't stop them. They got 21 hits. It wasn't our night." Mike Bolsinger went 5 2/3 innings to earn his first Dodgers victory in his second start of the year. Bolsinger was called up before the game to oppose Dan Haren, whose trade to the Marlins by the Dodgers over the winter led to the acquisition of Kendrick. The Dodgers had six players with multiple hits, five with multiple runs scored and four with multiple RBIs. "We did a good job forcing [Haren] to throw the ball in the strike zone and kept the pressure on him," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "We did a good job of passing the baton." Ethier on the rebound: The third-inning tie-breaking home run to center by Ethier, starting in place of injured right fielder Yasiel Puig, was the 150th of his career and fifth this year, one more than he hit in His 5-for-5 night has him batting.329. Stanton leaves the park: Stanton's shot was the third-longest homer this season tracked by Statcast -- behind Nelson Cruz (483), Josh Donaldson (481). Stanton's homer was impressive, but it wasn't his hardest-hit ball. His single to left in the sixth inning was tracked by Statcast to have an exit speed of 120 mph, Haren tagged on left arm: Along with giving up six runs in 4 1/3 innings, Haren's night also was hurt by a hard grounder that struck him above the glove on his left arm. The smash, off the bat of Kendrick in the first inning, left a bruise. Haren was looked at by the trainer, but opted to stay in after throwing two warmup pitches. matching his fastest exit speed of the season. Haren tagged on left arm: Along with giving up six runs in 4 1/3 innings, Haren's night also was hurt by a hard grounder that struck him above the glove on his left arm. The smash, off the bat of Kendrick in the first inning, left a bruise. Haren was looked at by the trainer, but opted to stay in after throwing two warmup pitches. No radar gun needed: Starting pitchers Bolsinger and Haren combined to throw 167 pitches, none faster than 89 mph. QUOTABLE "Any time I've got to come out of the game early is not good for the team. Luckily we're off in a day or two. We've got to come out tomorrow and try to win a game and salvage this thing." -- Haren on his season-short night "He came into Spring Training on a little bit of a mission. He voiced he wanted to play every day and backed it up with his play." -- Mattingly on Ethier

SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS The 21 hits allowed by the Marlins tied for the third most in franchise history. The most hits given up by the club was 28 on June 27, 2003, at Boston. REHAB ASSIGNMENT Miami's Opening Day starter, Henderson Alvarez, began his rehab assignment on Tuesday night, throwing six scoreless innings, giving up four hits and no walks while striking out five for Class A Jupiter. Alvarez has been on the disabled list since April 13 with right shoulder inflammation. Alvarez probably will have at least one more rehab start, but he is close to being reinstated from the DL. WHAT'S NEXT Marlins: In Wednesday's series finale at 7:50 p.m. ET, Jarred Cosart takes the mound in search of his first win since April 22 at Philadelphia, which has been his only win of the year. Cosart has labored in his last two starts, both losses, giving up seven runs in nine innings. Dodgers: Carlos Frias makes his third start for the Dodgers and is close to actually being considered part of the rotation, with Brandon McCarthy out for the year and Hyun-Jin Ryu out indefinitely. Frias made it five innings in his last start against the Brewers, allowing three runs. He has never faced the Marlins. Ethier's 5-for-5 latest feat in healthy season By Ken Gurnick LOS ANGELES -- Fans were expecting games like this from the Dodgers right fielder. They just didn't expect the right fielder to be Andre Ethier. But that wasn't Yasiel Puig going 5-for-5 with a homer to lead a 21-hit assault and an 11-1 rout of the Marlins on Tuesday night. Puig is out with a nagging hamstring, and in his place is Ethier, back in right field, back in the lineup, back in the spotlight. A former All-Star, Gold Glove Award winner and Silver Slugger Award winner, Ethier's body and career were in decline and he was trade bait once Puig burst on the scene. But Matt Kemp drew the better trade package and went to San Diego, while Ethier returned to the Dodgers intent on showing new management he was more than an extra outfielder. "You can complain about any situation, but sometimes you just grin and bear it," said Ethier, who matched his career single-game high in hits. "I knew the type of player I was capable of. Not everything goes the way you want. You have to grind through things. You have to figure ways to ride them out." He showed the payoff for an offseason of hard work with an impressive Spring Training, and he's still showing what he can do when he's healthy, which he said he hasn't been for multiple seasons. A broken

finger, knee surgery, a hairline ankle fracture all conspired to keep Ethier from being the player he once was, and now appears to be again. "They made for long, tough, daunting seasons," he said. "Knock on wood, I'm healthy." He's batting.329 with five homers, one more than he hit all last year. His fourth-inning blast to center field broke a 1-1 tie in this game, then he added singles in the four-run fifth inning and five-run sixth. The Dodgers had six players with multiple hits, five with multiple runs scored and four with multiple RBIs. In this lineup alone, Ethier is one of three Dodgers who weren't even supposed to be playing. Alex Guerrero, who has hit his way into playing time at third base and left field, had three hits, two RBIs and two runs. Scott Van Slyke, Monday night's walk-off hero, had three hits and two RBIs. Ethier, Guerrero and Van Slyke are joined by Howie Kendrick (four hits, including a homer), Adrian Gonzalez and Yasmani Grandal to give the Dodgers six hitters with batting averages above.300. Ethier predicted that Monday night's dramatic win could create momentum, giving the Dodgers "something to build off." The Dodgers now have a five-game win streak and are a remarkable 15-2 at home, their best home start in the modern era, to go with a 10th consecutive winning home series, the longest in Los Angeles history. They are 19-0 when they score four runs or more. Puig's rehab stopped after setback By Ken Gurnick LOS ANGELES -- An MRI exam of Yasiel Puig's left hamstring confirmed a setback in the healing process, and his rehab assignment has been stopped, manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday. "I don't know about it starting all the way over," Mattingly said. "It wasn't necessarily good news, but I don't feel we're starting all the way over. The MRI shows a strain and we know there is one." Puig has been troubled by the left hamstring since April 13. He missed four of the next five games, then went on the disabled list April 26. He was eligible to be activated Sunday, but reinjured the leg playing for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night. Mattingly suggested that players in general "get caught in the timetable and think that's the timetable they have to be ready. Guys always think they can play through stuff. But the reason he goes on the disabled list in the first place is to get healthy." Mattingly said the contributions of Monday night walk-off hero Scott Van Slyke, Andre Ethier playing "like the Andre of old" while getting the bulk of time in right field, and the offense from rookies Joc

Pederson and Alex Guerrero have allowed the Dodgers to remain in first place despite disabling injuries to Puig and Carl Crawford, as well as starting pitchers Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brandon McCarthy. HR doesn't rattle Bolsinger; another start likely By Ken Gurnick LOS ANGELES -- Mike Bolsinger joined two lists Tuesday night. He joined Alan Foster, Andy Messersmith, Frank Castillo and Jamie Arnold as pitchers that have allowed home runs hit out of Dodger Stadium. He also joined the list of Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Brett Anderson and Carlos Frias as a return member of the Dodgers' starting rotation. Both achievements brought a smile to Bolsinger's face. Yes, he actually smiled after allowing Giancarlo Stanton's monster shot that bounced off the back of the left-field pavilion canopy in the first inning. "I looked back and thought, 'That's awesome,' and then got on with the game," said Bolsinger, who was called up before Tuesday night's 11-1 win -- his second Dodgers start of the year and his first win with the club. Bolsinger said the single Stanton hit in the sixth inning might have been hit harder than the homer, if that's possible. "The ball the umpire gave me back had like a dent in it," he said. Bolsinger will make the highlights for serving up Stanton's homer, but the 5 2/3 innings he delivered were what made manager Don Mattingly say, "I would think so," when asked if Bolsinger will stick around for a Sunday start. "He kept us in the game, gave us a chance to win, and that's no different than what we ask from Clayton and Zack, what he did tonight," said Mattingly. In his only other start, Bolsinger threw almost an identical game (one run, five hits, 5 2/3 innings) in a no-decision in San Francisco, then got shuttled back to Triple-A in the daily roster churn. "You never know," Bolsinger said about his next assignment. "But I think I put myself in a good position." He said he didn't have fastball command, which is essential for a fastball that never touched 90 mph, but he made it through with curves and sliders, commending catchers Yasmani Grandal (who started) and A.J. Ellis (who didn't) for their communication and preparation.

Dodgers fans gave Bolsinger a standing ovation when he was relieved in the sixth inning. "It was awesome," he said. Jansen eyes season debut this weekend By Ken Gurnick LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen checked off another box on Tuesday in his deliberate recovery from left foot surgery, going through fielding drills with no setback. Jansen said his final exam will come Wednesday night, when he makes his last rehab appearance for Class A Advanced Rancho Cucamonga. If he comes out of that healthy, he is expected to be activated this weekend, roughly two months after having a benign growth removed from his foot. "Everything feels normal now," Jansen said. "I'll go all-out tomorrow and be back Saturday." Jansen said he will start Wednesday night's game and pitch one inning. There will be no limitations on fielding bunts or covering first base. "It's my last outing and I'll take it like a shutdown inning in the big leagues," he said. In other rehab news, reliever Joel Peralta said the strength is coming back in his right shoulder after a pinched nerve in his neck had him fearing surgery. He said he hopes to soon advance to playing catch. Frias eyes fourth straight win, sweep of Fish By Joe Frisaro LOS ANGELES -- A pair of hard-throwing right-handers will take the mound on Wednesday in the series finale at Dodger Stadium. Miami is going with Jarred Cosart, who has dropped two straight decisions, while Los Angeles is turning to Carlos Frias, who is making his third start of the season. Cosart and Frias each boast 96-mph fastballs. They've each had some mixed results of late. Cosart has yielded seven runs in his last nine innings. Frias has won three straight decisions, with two of them as a starter. He is coming off a five-inning win at Milwaukee, giving up three runs with six strikeouts. What you need to know about this game:

The Marlins' closer situation is up in the air. Steve Cishek, who has converted just three of seven save chances, will now be used in earlier innings. A.J. Ramos is the likely candidate to get the most chances, but it will depend on matchups. Mike Dunn, a lefty, could get some opportunities as well. The unusual start time of 4:50 p.m. PT (7:50 p.m. ET) was selected to comply with MLB travel rules, so the Marlins would have a day off Thursday without traveling. Giancarlo Stanton wowed the crowd with his home run that left Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night. According to Statcast, the projected distance was 475 feet. In 14 career games at Dodger Stadium, Stanton has six homers. Dodgers and Cardinals models of resilience By Richard Justice Perhaps the most impressive thing about the Los Angeles Dodgers is how this season hasn't turned into a mess. And this is why they're baseball's most impressive team. Yes, I see you, Cardinals, Yankees, Mets and Astros fans raising your hands. All of you have a very solid case to make on behalf of your team. All appear to be legitimate playoff contenders. In fact, we appear headed for a third straight Cardinals-Dodgers postseason series in the National League, and won't that be fun? Who would you take? Between them, they have the two best won-loss records in the Majors, as well as the two best run differentials. They've both remained in first place for most of the season despite some serious problems. Up-to-the-minute standings The Cardinals have potentially baseball's deepest rotation, even after the loss of ace Adam Wainwright to surgery on his left Achilles tendon. Meanwhile, the Dodgers have a very good, very deep lineup. If the Dodgers had known all of the problems that would arise in these early weeks, they'd probably be surprised to be and leading the NL West by five games. Two-thirds of their projected starting outfield and two of their five starting pitchers are on the disabled list. Their shortstop, Jimmy Rollins, is hitting.165, and their No. 1 starter, Clayton Kershaw, has won one of his seven starts and is sporting his highest ERA (4.26) since his rookie season. All these problems have done is reveal how good the Dodgers really are, that is, the depth and flexibility of the roster, as well as manager Don Mattingly's ability to keep things running smoothly and put people in a position to succeed.

Los Angeles has the NL's highest-scoring offense, at 5.13 runs per game, and the league's fourth-best pitching staff (3.20 ERA). While all of that sounds impressive, it doesn't reveal how strong the Dodgers truly are. In the dozen games that outfielders Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford have spent on the DL, the Dodgers have gone 9-3, with Mattingly mixing and matching Andre Ethier and Scott Van Slyke into those two spots. Combined, they are hitting.306 with six home runs and 22 RBIs in 124 at-bats. So there's been no drop-off there. They've performed so well that it'll be interesting to see how Mattingly sorts out the playing time when the starters return. If nothing else, the Dodgers know they have plenty of flexibility if president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman decides to go outside the organization to shore up the rotation. And then, there's that rotation. Actually, there's not one. With Brandon McCarthy lost for the rest of the season and Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brandon Beachy not yet ready to pitch, Mattingly has pieced things together a week at a time. Mattingly has used nine starting pitchers in all, including lefty Mike Bolsinger, scheduled to start on Tuesday, and Carlos Frias, set to take the ball on Wednesday. So far, Bolsinger and Frias have made three starts, and the Dodgers have won two of those games. Throw in starts by Scott Baker, Joe Wieland and David Huff, and the Dodgers have a winning record (4-3) when someone other than Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Brett Anderson or McCarthy gets the ball. Through it all, Friedman has done nothing more than explore his options. He has a deep enough farm system to get almost any available starting pitcher, including Phillies ace Cole Hamels. But the Dodgers' two top young players -- center fielder Joc Pederson and 20-year-old shortstop Corey Seager, ranked as baseball's No. 7 prospect by MLB.com -- are thought to be untouchable. All Friedman will say is that it would be difficult to trade a future cornerstone piece to obtain help for So the Dodgers do what good organizations do. In fact, they do what the Cards traditionally have done. Both franchises long ago learned that patience is a huge virtue during the emotional roller coaster of a six-month regular season. The Dodgers' strengths are huge. Their bullpen has been tremendous. Greinke has been a prototypical No. 1 starter. Offensive contributions have come from almost every corner of the clubhouse, especially at first base, where Adrian Gonzalez is having an NL MVP-caliber season. If it's about measuring these two teams for October, the Dodgers could have Kershaw and Greinke lined up to open the postseason. But they had them lined up last year, when the Cardinals won a best-of-five series in four games.

And the Cards could line up John Lackey, Lance Lynn and Michael Wacha, a front three that has been as good as any in baseball. For now, the fun part is getting to watch both of these teams roll through the regular season. As Frank Robinson once said, "Baseball is the most beautiful game on earth when it's played right." And the Cardinals and Dodgers play it right. Bolsinger called up from Triple-A for second start By Ken Gurnick LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers, who optioned outfielder Chris Heisey to Triple-A Oklahoma City after Monday night's game, replaced him by recalling right-handed pitcher Mike Bolsinger, who starts Tuesday night against Miami. Bolsinger, 27, will be making his second start for the Dodgers this year. He allowed one run on five hits over 5 2/3 innings in a spot start on April 23 at San Francisco, earning a no-decision in a 3-2 loss. Bolsinger last pitched on May 6 for Oklahoma City, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out seven in a five-inning no-decision. He is one of nine starting pitchers the Dodgers have used this year. OC REGISTER Dodgers' hit parade dooms former teammate Haren By Pedro Moura LOS ANGELES The Marlins got 478 feet of offense from Giancarlo Stanton to start Tuesday s game at Dodger Stadium. But that was all they got, while the Dodgers followed it with about a mile s worth from all kinds of sources, rampaging former Dodger Dan Haren in an 11-1 victory over Miami. We did a good job of putting the pressure on him, up and down the lineup, continuing to pass the baton, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. The Dodgers produced 21 hits in all, five by Andre Ethier, four from Howie Kendrick, three from Alex Guerrero and Scott Van Slyke and two from a couple others. It was an outstanding offensive effort that gave the team a remarkable, best-in-baseball plus-63 run differential in 32 games this season. In other words, in every game they play, even their losses, the Dodgers (22-10) have averaged a two-run advantage. They ve won 16 of their 18 home games, too, by far the best mark in the sport.

In Tuesday s first two innings, Haren successfully scattered five singles to prevent the Dodgers from scoring. But Kendrick began the third inning with a first-pitch homer and Andre Ether commenced the fourth with a third-pitch homer, giving the Dodgers a 2-1 lead they would not relinquish. They broke through in the fifth. In a four-pitch span, Haren hit Adrian Gonzalez with a pitch, allowed Guerrero to hit a double, Yasmani Grandal to hit a single and Andre Ethier to hit another single, scoring three runs in all. After the Dodgers chased Haren, they added another run on a Van Slyke double, and then five more in the sixth. Ethier s 5-for-5 day was just the fourth such game by an MLB player this season, and the first by a Dodger since Jerry Hairston Jr. did it in May That s the best he s looked in a few years, Mattingly said of Ethier. During the bottom half of Tuesday's first inning, Ethier laughed in the dugout about the sheer length of Stanton's homer. Seen by starter Mike Bolsinger, who gave it up, Ethier then felt the need to apologize, but Bolsinger was laughing, too. That was the hardest hit I've ever seen, Bolsinger said. Actually, I take that back, his last hit against me was the hardest. Indeed, Stanton's last hit, a ripped sixth-inning single to left, traveled 120 miles per hour off the bat, according to MLB's Statcast system. The homer traveled 115 miles per hour, making it only the 12th hardest-hit homer this season. Bolsinger, up from Triple-A Oklahoma City, started and produced another solid outing that mirrored his performance in his first spot start last month. Bolsinger lasted 52/3 innings, exactly like last time, and gave up five hits and a run, just like last time. Stanton s first-inning homer was a big blemish, but it was Bolsinger s only one. He gave us a chance, which is all we really ask for from all of our starters, Mattingly said. The manager said after the game that Bolsinger will start the next time the Dodgers need a fifth starter Sunday. Neither Bolsinger nor Haren threw a single pitch that reached 90 miles per hour in 167 total offerings. Four Dodger relievers combined to get 10 outs without allowing a hit after Bolsinger exited. The Dodgers secured a series win over Miami with the victory. Dating to last season, the Dodgers have won 10 consecutive home series.

Final: Dodgers wallop Marlins, 11-1 By Pedro Moura LOS ANGELES The Marlins got 478 feet of offense from Giancarlo Stanton to start Tuesday s game at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers secured a series win over Miami with the victory. Dating to last season, the Dodgers have won 10 consecutive home series. Lineups: Marlins at Dodgers, as Dan Haren returns By Pedro Moura

LOS ANGELES -- Dan Haren's played for seven teams at this point in his major-league career. So it's not as if this is a ballyhooed return for the 34-year-old right-hander, but it's a return nonetheless. He'll start at 7:10 p.m. against Dodger spot starter Mike Bolsinger. It's his first time as a visitor since 2013, back when he was a member of the Washington Nationals. Clayton Kershaw out-dueled him on a May night that season. He's been having great, slightly-luck-fueled success for the Miami Marlins this year, with a 4-1 record and a 2.68 ERA in six starts. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly officially admitted this afternoon that the team has no set starter at third base. Juan Uribe unceremoniously lost that job after Alex Guerrero and Justin Turner continued their hot streaks. The 36-year-old Uribe has 16 plate appearances this month. Guerrero has 22, and Turner has 26. Guerrero gets the start tonight, and Scott Van Slyke gets a second consecutive start against a righthander. The Marlins start the same lineup as last night. Here are the full lineups: MARLINS Dee Gordon 2B Martin Prado 3B Giancarlo Stanton RF Marcell Ozuna CF Christian Yelich LF Michael Morse 1B J.T. Realmuto C Adeiny Hechavarria SS Dan Haren P DODGERS Joc Pederson CF Jimmy Rollins SS Howie Kendrick 2B Adrian Gonzalez 1B Alex Guerrero 3B Yasmani Grandal C Andre Ethier RF Scott Van Slyke LF Mike Bolsinger P

Dodgers Notes: Yasiel Puig's rehab is halted, for now By Pedro Moura LOS ANGELES In a best-case scenario, Dodgers right fielder Yasiel Puig is about two weeks away from returning to major-league games. In the worst case, who knows? Puig s recovery from a strained left hamstring was shut down over the weekend after he pulled up lame during a rehab appearance for High-A Rancho Cucamonga. The Dodgers have shut him down for the foreseeable future, after an MRI taken Monday revealed damage to the muscle. It wasn t necessarily good news, but I don t feel we re starting all the way over, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Tuesday. The MRI shows a strain. We know there is one. Mattingly did not characterize the state of his rehab as a total shutdown. He s still receiving treatment on the injury. But based on the timetable when Puig first hurt the hamstring, it seems unlikely he d make it back before the final week of May, and perhaps not until the beginning of June. So, yes, maybe he is really shut down. In a sense, Mattingly said. You know, they re always doing something, so you re never really shut down. I m sure they ll let it calm down a couple of days and then kind of get back on the program, as far as building toward doing bike work, doing bases, doing water. Puig told the Dodgers he was feeling fine leading up to the aggravation of the injury, but it s become clear he might not have been feeling as great as he said. The manager said he wanted to treat the incident as a learning experience for the 24-year-old outfielder, who was getting eager to return to games. That s where he just has to talk, Mattingly said. Guys get caught in timetables sometimes, I think. STANTON S HOMER Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton hit a mammoth homer in Tuesday s first inning, clearing the Dodger Stadium left-field pavilion entirely and becoming just the fourth player to do so. The Dodgers estimated that his home run to deep left field traveled 478 feet, meaning Stanton bested Alex Rodriguez s 477-foot blast earlier this month for the title of longest homer this season. Dodgers starter Mike Bolsinger threw him an 85 mph cutter over the middle of the plate, and Stanton swung ferociously. Bolsinger looked up and then away, almost immediately. He didn t want to see it. Everyone else in attendance did. Left fielder Scott Van Slyke didn t take a step in either direction after the ball was hit, only turning slowly to observe it as it flew past. The ball eventually hit the stadium s canopy, effectively clearing the stadium.
