Altoona starter Taylor Hearn picked six innings and allowed one run on four hits with no walks and seven strikeouts, but was hit with the loss. Akron starter Shane Bieber threw seven scoreless innings, extending his season-opening scoreless streak to 20 innings overall. Mitch Brown worked the final two frames for his second save. Akron opened the scoring with an RBI double by Mark Mathias in the fifth inning and added a second run with an RBI by Ka'ai Tom in the seventh. Elvis Escobar had two of the Curve's four hits. TONIGHT: The 20th Season of Altoona Curve Baseball, presented by Stuckey Subaru, continues at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio against the Akron RubberDucks, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians in the third of a four-game series. THE CURVE: After taking three-of-four against Akron to open the season, the Curve split a shortened two-game series with Harrisburg at home. They followed with an abbreviated, two-game sweep at Erie. The Curve currently hold a 2.30 team ERA, second-best in the Eastern League. They have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season entering play tonight. THE RUBBERDUCKS: After losing three-of-four at Altoona to begin the year, Akron responded with a three-game road sweep at Bowie last week. In their first home series of 2018, Akron was swept in two games by Trenton, with the final scheduled game postponed due to rain on Sunday. The RubberDucks are hitting.167 as a team, last in the Eastern League, but have the league's best team ERA at FOR ALTOONA: Right-hander J.T. Brubaker makes his third start of the season. He was the Curve's Opening Day starter on Apirl 5 and worked five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) in the fifth inning against Akron. Brubaker totaled eight strikeouts in that start, including striking out the side in the first inning to open the season. Last time out last Wednesday, he picked up a loss against Harrisburg after allowing two earned runs in five innings. Dating back to July 18, 2017, Brubaker is 3-3 with a 3.29 ERA (23 ER/63 IP) in his last 12 starts. Brubaker was a member of the Altoona rotation in 2017 and Game 2 of the Eastern League Championship Series in Trenton on September 13, when he picked up a win after allowing two runs (one earned) over eight innings with six strikeouts. A native of Springfield, Ohio, Brubaker was drafted by the Pirates in the sixth round in 2015 out of the University of Akron. FOR AKRON: Right-hander Aaron Civale makes his third start of the season. Last time out last Wednesday, he picked up his first win after working six innings without allowing an earned run and striking out seven. He made his Double-A debut against the Curve on April 6 at Altoona and allowed six runs (one earned) in 3.2 innings in a no-decision. He entered the season ranked as the Indians' No. 10 prospect by MLB.com. Civale was drafted in the third round in 2016 out of Northwestern and he led the organization in wins last season while pitching for Single-A Lake County and A-Adv. Lynchburg. He went 6-0 with a 1.93 ERA in August last year to earn Carolina League Pitcher of the Month honors. THE STARTING LINE: Curve starting pitchers have combined to go 2-2 with a 1.28 ERA (8 ER/56.1 IP) over the first ten games of the 2018 season, the best start for Altoona starters since 2015, when they were 4-0 with a 0.33 ERA (2 ER/54.0 IP) through the first ten games. That year, starting pitchers Jason Creasy, Zack Dodson, Tyler Glasnow, Chad Kuhl and Angel Sanchez began the year 6-0 with a 0.71 ERA (6 ER/75.2 IP) over their first 14 games. A first-round pick by the Pirates in 2016, Craig hit 37 home runs over his three-year career at Wake Forest. So far as a professional, he has combined to hit 11 homers. COLE TRAIN: Dating back to August 19, 2017 through Monday, Cole Tucker held a 25-game on-base streak, which was the longest active streak in the Eastern League. In that span, the switch-hitter hit.365 (35/96) with seven doubles, three triples, two homers, 17 RBIs and 18 runs scored. The streak was snapped with his 0-for-4 game on Tuesday. He leads the Curve with a.324 batting average.
