The title marked the franchise's third regular-season division championship in franchise history, winning the South Division in 2004 and the Western Division in This year, the Curve led the West for 96 of 140 games and took over solo possession of the top spot for good on August 22. The Curve won 10 of their final 16 games, including a season-best five-game winning streak from August clinched the Western Division regularseason title with a walk-off win over Harrisburg on September 4 and a loss by Bowie at Richmond that afternoon. The Curve advanced to the ELCS with a three-game sweep over the Bowie Baysox in the Western Division Series. THE THUNDER: Trenton posted their best record in franchise history, going in the regular season, including a mark at home. They finished the year with the top pitching staff in the league, posting a franchise-record 2.83 ERA, the lowest in the Eastern League since 1976, with 1160 strikeouts. They also tossed 20 shutout wins this year, another franchise record. On Friday, Justin Sheffield and Taylor Widener combined to no-hit Binghamton in Game 2 of the Eastern Division Series. After losing Game 1 of their Division Series, the Thunder won their next three games to advance to the ELCS, outscoring the Rumble Ponies, Trenton is in the Eastern League postseason for the 12th time in their 24 seasons and the ninth time in the last 13 years. They have won three EL titles: 2007, 2008 and TONIGHT: The Curve face the Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, in Game 2 of the Eastern League Championship Series at ARM & HAMMER Park in Trenton, N.J. The Thunder are hosting the first two games of the ELCS, with the series shifting to for the final three games. The Curve have won all four playoff games and six straight games overall dating back to the regular season, their longest winning streak of the year. The Curve hold a 1-0 lead in the series after a 2-1 win in Game 1 behind six scoreless innings by Brandon Waddell. AGAINST THE THUNDER: The Curve went 5-8 against Trenton this season, with five losses coming by one run and two by two runs. On June 20, the Curve beat the Thunder 14-4, handing Trenton their worst loss of the season. went to Trenton for one series, going 1-2 at ARM & HAMMER Park, losing the finale in extra innings. The Thunder posted a 4.05 ERA against the Curve, their highest against any E.L. opponent this year, with a 2.71 ERA against the other ten teams. FOR ALTOONA: Right-hander J.T. Brubaker starts Game 2 after making 24 starts and two relief outings during the regular season for the Curve. Tonight marks his outing of these playoffs. In his most recent start, Brubaker worked six innings and allowed two earned runs with six strikeouts on Sept. 4 against Harrisburg. Over his last ten starts since July 18, Brubaker went 3-2 with a 3.00 ERA (20 ER/54 IP). Brubaker has made three playoff starts in his career, combining to go 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA (2 ER/18 IP). In 2015, he worked six innings and allowed one run against Staten Island in Game 1 of the New York-Penn League Championship Series. Last season with, he worked six scoreless innings in Game 2 of the semifinals as the Marauders advanced to the championship series and picked up a win in Game 4 of the FSL Championship Series over Tampa as clinched the league title. The Pirates selected Brubaker in the sixth round of the 2015 draft out of the University of Akron. For more on Brubaker, see page two. FOR TRENTON: Left-hander Justus Sheffield starts Game 2 after working four innings in a combined no-hitter in a Game 3 win for Trenton over Binghamton in the Division Series. Sheffield made 17 starts in the regular season for the Thunder, but missed most of July and August on the disabled list with an oblique injury. Sheffield was drafted by the Indians in the first round (31st overall) in 2015 and was traded to the Yankees along with Ben Heller, Clint Frazier and J.P. Feyereisen for LHP Andrew Miller. He's ranked as the Yankees' No. 5 prospect, the No. 86 overall prospect and the No. 7 LHP prospect by MLB.com. BACK TO THE PLAYOFFS: The Curve solidified a playoff berth for the third straight season with a 3-1 win on August 29 at Richmond. The Curve are the only team to reach the Eastern League postseason in each of the last three seasons. This year marks the second time in franchise history the Curve have reached the playoffs in three straight seasons (They went to the playoffs in four consecutive years from ). The Curve have won their division two other times: 2004 and In both of those seasons, they advanced to the Eastern League Championship series, losing in the finals to New Hampshire in 2004 and winning their only E.L. title to date in 2010 over Trenton. This year's Curve team posted the sixth-best record in team history (.529 winning percentage). CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES HISTORY: The Curve have picked up regular-season division titles three times including this year, and they have won their Division Series match-ups all three times to advance to the Eastern League Championship Series. In 2004, the Curve swept the Erie SeaWolves in the Division Series and were swept in three games in the ELCS by New Hampshire. In 2010, the Curve beat the Harrisburg Senators in the divisional round and faced the Trenton Thunder in the Championship Series, winning in four games. The Curve lost the first game at home, which was started by rehabbing Major Leaguer Andy Pettitte, but bounced back to win Game 2 at home and took the next two games in Trenton to lock up their first Eastern League title in franchise history. PITCH PERFECT: Over the last 19 games since August 20 (including playoffs), Curve starting pitchers have combined to go 11-3 with a 2.17 ERA (30 ER/124.1 IP). In that stretch, J.T. Brubaker is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA (10 ER/22 IP) in three starts, Brandon Waddell is 2-0 with a 1.09 ERA (3 ER/24.2 IP) in three starts, Mitch Keller is 3-1 with a 2.10 ERA (6 ER/25.2 IP) in three starts, Casey Sadler is 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA (1 ER/9.0 IP) in one start, Alex McRae is 2-0 with a 3.68 ERA (9 ER/22 IP) in four starts and Austin Coley is 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA in three starts (1 ER/21 IP). CLOSE CALLS: The Curve went in their last 45 regular-season games, and ten of those were by one run. Their last 21 losses since July 18 were by an average of 2.1 runs (44 runs/21 games). Kevin Kramer, Casey Hughston, Mitchell Tolman, Tate Scioneaux, Brandon Waddell, Tanner Anderson, J.T. Brubaker and Daniel Zamora played during the playoffs for the 2015 New York-Penn League-champion West Virginia Black Bears during their championship run. Tanner Anderson has a 1.07 ERA (3 ER/25.1 IP) in 12 appearances (including playoffs) since moving to the bullpen on July 31. Since July 3, Tate Scioneaux has converted all eight save chances and has a 1.86 ERA (6 ER/29 IP) in 20 games, including one playoff appearance. Right-hander Yeudy Garcia posted a 2.73 ERA (8 ER/26.1 IP) and added three saves over 16 outings since moving to the bullpen full time in early July, including one playoff outing.
