Austin Coley worked seven scoreless innings and struck out eight, matching a career high. Cole Tucker put the Curve on the board with an RBI single in the fifth inning, Wyatt Mathisen singled home a run in the sixth and Tucker added another RBI hit in the seventh to put the Curve ahead, 3-0. Yeudy Garcia worked a scoreless eighth inning and allowed one run in the ninth before stranding the tying run on base. TODAY: The Curve play the third of a four-game road series against the Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants. The Curve won two of three games in their first series against Richmond this year from April at The Diamond and swept a two-game set in form May 2-3. Richmond won two of three games at The Diamond from May 8-10 and took three of four games in from June entered this series having split a four-game series at home against Bowie and have eight wins over the last 12 games. Richmond split a four-game series against Trenton prior to this series, dropping the final two games, but have won eight of their last 12 games overall. FOR ALTOONA: Right-hander J.T. Brubaker makes his 23rd start and his 25th overall appearance of the season for the Curve. He last pitched on Friday against Bowie, picking up a loss despite allowing one earned run on two hits, working around five walks with seven strikeouts. Over his last eight starts since July 18, Brubaker is 3-1 with a 2.80 ERA (14 ER/45 IP). Brubaker began 2016 with Single-A West Virginia, where he went 4-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 12 starts. He was promoted to A-Adv. in June and went 2-6 with a 5.32 ERA over 14 starts. The Pirates selected Brubaker in the sixth round of the 2015 draft out of the University of Akron. He went 6-4 with a 2.82 in his professional debut season with the West Virginia Black Bears in 2015 en route to a New York-Penn League championship. For more on Brubaker, see page two. FOR RICHMOND: Left-hander Nate Reed makes his eighth start of the season and his 10th overall appearance for the Flying Squirrels. In his last start, he worked seven scoreless innings and allowed four hits in a win at Trenton. He made 11 starts this season for Lancaster of the independent Atlantic League before signing with the Giants. Reed played collegiality at the University of Pittsburgh before transferring to Kutztown to finish his career. PLAYOFF BOUND: The Curve solidified a playoff berth for the third straight season with Tuesday night's win at Richmond. They currently lead the Western Division by one game over Bowie. This year marks the second time in franchise history the Curve have reached the playoffs in three straight seasons (They went to the playoffs in four consecutive years from ). The Curve have won their division two times: 2004 and In both of those seasons, they advanced to the Eastern League Championship series, losing in the finals to New Hampshire in 2004 and winning their only E.L. title to date in 2010 over Trenton. The win on Tuesday also locked up the Curve's 12th winning season in their first 19 years. PITCH PERFECT: Over the last 10 games since August 20, Curve starting pitchers have combined to go 5-2 with a 2.31 ERA (16/62.1 IP). In that stretch, J.T. Brubaker is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA (4 ER/13 IP) in two starts, Brandon Waddell is 1-0 with a 0.77 ERA (1 ER/11.2 IP) in two starts, Mitch Keller is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA (6 ER/10.2 IP) in two starts, Casey Sadler is 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA (1 ER/9.0 IP) in one start and Alex McRae is 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA (4 ER/11 IP) in two starts. COLE WORLD: Cole Tucker is batting.363 (16/44) over his last 11 games with 10 RBIs, two doubles, a triple and one homer. He has picked up five go-ahead hits for the Curve dating back to Aug. 20, when he hit an RBI single in the 10th inning at New Hampshire to lift the Curve to a 6-5 win. On Aug. 21, he clubbed a two-run homer in a 2-0 win at Hartford. On Aug. 22, he gave the Curve a lead with a two-run triple to give the Curve the lead in a 5-4 win at Hartford. On Saturday, Tucker broke a 1-1 tie with a go-ahead single in the sixth inning in a win over the Baysox. He broke a scoreless tie in a 3-1 win on Tuesday at Richmond as the Curve clinched a postseason berth. CLOSE CALLS: The Curve have gone in their last 39 games, and eight of those losses have been by one run. Their last 18 losses since July 18 have been by an average of 2.1 runs (37 runs/18 games). The Curve have played 51 one-run games this year, the most in the Eastern League, and have posted a record in those games. SEARCHING FOR HITS: The Curve are hitting.242 in the month of August, the lowest in the Eastern League and the lowest for the Curve in a single month this season. The team average for the season is currently.254, which would be the second-lowest in franchise history (Next closest is the 2008 Curve, who hit.255), trailing only the 2013 team, which hit.252. C-N-O: Reliever Tate Scioneaux has held opposing batters to a.210 average, tied for third-best in the league among relievers. Scioneaux is ranked third in the league with 44 appearances, has the lowest BB/9 IP ratio (1.47) and has allowed the second-fewest baserunners (8.62/9 IP). He has converted each of his last eight save attempts. SAVE IT: The Curve lead the Eastern League with 44 saves this season, tied for their second-highest total in a year since 2008 (They had 47 in 2010 and 44 in 2015). The team record for saves in a single season is 49, which the Curve posted in Montana DuRapau (14) and Tate Scioneaux (14) are the third duo of relievers in franchise history to individually record double-digit saves in a single season. He lifted the Curve to a 3-2 win with a walk-off single against Trenton on August 12 in the first game of a double-header. The next day, he drove a walk-off single in the bottom of the tenth to hand the Curve a 5-4 win against the Thunder. He is the only Curve player to have multiple walk-off hits this season. Escobar has seven three-hit games this season, which is tied for most on the team. However, Escobar is 1-for-19 dating back to August 25. WHAT A RELIEF: Over 15 games since July 15, Luis Heredia posted a 0.87 ERA (2 ER/20.2 IP). Tanner Anderson has a 1.02 ERA (2 ER/17.2 IP) in eight appearances since moving to the bullpen on July 31. Since July 3, Tate Scioneaux has converted all eight save chances and has a 2.08 ERA (6 ER/26 IP) in 18 games. Right-hander Yeudy Garcia has posted a 3.09 ERA (8 ER/23.1 IP) and added three saves over 14 outings since moving to the bullpen full time in early July.
