Trenton took the lead on a sac fly by Jorge Saez in the second, added a run in the fourth on a solo homer by Mike Ford and pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the sixth when a run scored on a double-play groundout. The Curve scored two runs in the eighth to pull within a run. Elvis Escobar brought in a run with a groundout and Michael Suchy scored on a wild pitch. Trenton added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI hit by Ryan McBroom. Austin Coley allowed three runs over six innings and was charged with third loss of the year. Tanner Anderson pitched two relief innings and allowed one unearned run. TODAY: The Curve play the second of a three-game road series against the Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees. The two teams split a two-game series in from June 20-21, with the third game being postponed due to rain on June 22. The Curve lost three of four at home against the Thunder from July Trenton returns to for a four-game, three-day series from Aug The Curve are in a span of playing 11 of 18 games against the Thunder. FOR ALTOONA: Left-hander Brandon Waddell takes the mound for his tenth start of the season. Last time out, he picked up his first win of the year after allowing three runs (two earned) in five innings against Erie, making his first start since missing seven weeks with a forearm strain. He began his rehab work on July 14 with three scoreless innings in the GCL. He made two rehab starts for the New York-Penn League's West Virginia Black Bears on July 20 and 25, allowing one run over seven innings with 11 strikeouts. He began 2016 with A-Adv. and went 4-0 with a 0.93 ERA in five starts. He was 7-9 with a 4.12 ERA in 22 outings (20 starts) for the Curve after being promoted in May Waddell was a 2016 MiLB.com Pittsburgh Organization All-Star. He was drafted in the fifth round in 2015 out of the University of Virginia, where he picked up a win in the clinching game of the 2015 College World Series against Vanderbilt. For more on Waddell, see page two. FOR TRENTON: Right-hander Domingo Acevedo makes his 12th start of the year for the Thunder. He faced the Curve on Sunday at PNG Field and allowed two runs over five innings on four hits. He began the year with A-Adv. Tampa, where he went 0-4 with a 4.57 ERA in seven starts before a promotion in mid-may to Double-A. He also made two starts with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, going 1-1 with a 4.38 ERA. Over his first seven starts for Trenton this year, Acevedo went 3-0 with a 1.39 ERA. Acevedo is ranked by MLB.com as the Yankees' No. 10 prospect. TRENTON MAKES FOR CLOSE GAMES: The Curve have gone 2-5 against the Thunder this year, with four losses by one run and one loss by two runs. The Thunder broke a 4-4 tie with a homer by Thairo Estrada last Thursday. The Curve walked in the winning run on Sunday in a 5-4, 11-inning loss. Ryan McBroom gave the Thunder an 8-7 win with a homer in the eighth on Saturday. The Curve handed the Thunder their worst loss of the year on June 20 in a 14-4 victory. PLAYOFF POSITIONING: The Curve clinched a winning record against Erie this season with Monday's win, an important victory in the event of a tie in the final regular-season standings, with head-to-head records serving as the first tiebreaker. The Curve have gone 3-12 against first-place Bowie this year, but have posted a record against the rest of the Eastern League (Bowie is against the league excluding ). went against fourthplace Akron. CLOSE CALLS: The Curve have gone 8-8 in their last 16 games, and five of those losses have been by one run. Their last eight losses since July 18 have been by an average of 1.5 runs (12 runs/8 games). The Curve have played 41 onerun games this year, the most in the Eastern League, and have posted an record in those games. STARTING IMPROVEMENT: Over the last 31 games since July 3, Curve starting pitchers have combined to go 13-5 with a 3.01 ERA (59 ER/176.2 IP), an improvement over the previous 79 starts, when the starters combined to go with a 4.63 ERA. In that span, Alex McRae is 3-0 with a 2.18 ERA (8 ER/33 IP) in five starts, Tanner Anderson is 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA (10 ER/34 IP) in four starts and Austin Coley is 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA (14 ER/44.0) in seven starts. Over the last 13 games, Curve starters have combined to go 8-2 with a 2.34 ERA (19 ER/73 IP). WY NOT: All-Star third baseman Wyatt Mathisen is ranked tenth in the league with a.296 batting average and fourth with a.380 on-base percentage. On Thursday, Mathisen went 5-for-5, tying the Curve franchise record for most hits in a single game. It was the 15th five-hit game in Curve history. THE SUMMER OF GEORGE: The Curve added OF/INF Jordan George from A-Adv. on Friday, and he had a memorable Double-A debut in Saturday's double-header. In the first game, he clubbed a two-run homer to pick up his first hit with the Curve and added a two-run double, finishing the game with four RBIs. Behind the plate, he has thrown out 51.4 percent (18/35) of base stealing attempts this season, the best in the Eastern League this season, well above the league-average of 35.6 percent. THE 'PEN IS MIGHTY: Reliever Tate Scioneaux has held opposing batters to a.203 average, third-best in the league among relievers. Scioneaux is tied for second in the league with 36 appearances, has the second-lowest BB/9 IP ratio (1.70) and has allowed the third-fewest baserunners (8.61/9 IP). Out of relievers with at least 45 innings pitched this year, Miguel Rosario is first with a 1.80 ERA and Scioneaux is third with a 1.96 ERA.
