10 ADMINISTRATION Dr. Bruce Grube President Sam Baker Athletic Director Dr. Bruce Grube assumed office as Georgia Southern s 11th president on July 1, 1999, signaling the start of a drive to national distinction. Grube accepted the presidency of Georgia Southern after four years as president of St. Cloud State University. Prior to his appointment at St. Cloud, Grube served as provost of the University of Southern Colorado, now Colorado State University-Pueblo, with responsibilities as the chief academic officer and chief operations officer. Grube spent 15 years at California State University, Ponoma, the last five years as provost and academic vice president. Grube s vision is predicated on his belief that no university ever became great without expecting to be great. To that goal, the University developed a strategic plan based on achieving academic distinction, supported by student-centered culture, technological advancement, transcultural opportunities, public-private partnerships and the physical enhancement of campus. In his first seven years, Grube has led Georgia Southern to unprecedented academic heights and public services. While many believed that higher admission standards and enrollment growth were mutually exclusive, the composite SAT scores of the University s incoming freshmen have surpassed state and national averages, rising more than 100 points since During this period, the University posted record enrollment figures four consecutive years. The University s academic programs are earning national recognition for degree programs, preparation of graduates and research. The addition of the new College of Information Technology points to Georgia Southern s significant participation in the region s economic growth. New and evolving academic disciplines, as well as the unprecedented growth of campus, illustrate the positive impact of the University. A major expansion of the library, new fine arts galleries and black box theatre, and additional fitness and recreational amenities will complement the recently completed facilities for academics, housing and athletics. Lifelong learning opportunities both on-campus and online, programs to enrich the lives of residents, and a variety of educational and cultural assets have established Georgia Southern as a cultural center for the region. It also serves as a rallying point for the region s intercollegiate athletics fans, fielding 15 men s and women s teams on the NCAA Division I level. Recognized for conference and regional championships, the Eagles have posted winning records that have earned nationally televised appearances in football, basketball, baseball and golf. The Eagle football team made history by capturing its unparalleled fifth and sixth national titles in 1999 and An active participant in numerous academic, athletics and community organizations, Grube is the state representative for Georgia for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities and serves on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors. Grube is also a member of the NCAA Division I-AA/I-AAA Presidential Advisory Group and was chair of the Southern Conference Council of Presidents. Grube holds a bachelor s degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. Grube is a member of the honor societies of Phi Kappa Phi, Pi Sigma Alpha, Phi Alpha Theta, Phil Beta Delta and Golden Key. As volunteers for civic and charitable organizations, Grube and his wife, Kathryn, serve on numerous community and regional boards and committees. Celebrating a full decade as Georgia Southern Athletics Director this year, Sam Baker has successfully steered Eagle Athletics from a period of transition and renewal to consistent success and national prominence. Under his leadership over the last 10 years, Georgia Southern has soared to national and conference championships, witnessed unprecedented growth in athletic facilities and reaffirmed its commitment to student-athlete welfare and academic performance. Eagle Athletics have enjoyed extraordinary achievement across the board over the course of Baker s ten years in Statesboro. Georgia Southern football has reasserted its national profile by winning seven Southern Conference titles, making eight NCAA I-AA playoff appearances in the last nine years, and capturing the 1999 and 2000 NCAA I-AA National Championships. In all, the Eagle and Lady Eagle programs have won 25 SoCon championships and made 20 appearances in NCAA Championships in the last decade. Since 2000, facility improvements have been a main focal point of Baker s efforts. Currently, the department is overseeing the final construction phase of the Gene Bishop Fieldhouse at Paulson Stadium and the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center. Last year saw the renovation of J. I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/Soccer Stadium, and significant upgrades in the Iron Works (Georgia Southern s strength and conditioning center) and Men s Basketball Locker Rooms (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation. Baker has also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building (completed in 2000) and the Troy Cowart Building (home to Southern Boosters and the GSU Ticket Office). Additionally, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. He just completed a decade-long stint as chair of the SoCon Football Committee. In January, he begins a term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its Promise of Tomorrow scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education. From , he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club. In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years ( ) as director of athletic promotions. Baker holds a 1976 master s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 30 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb (27 years old and a doctoral student at Emory), Elizabeth Ann (25, Director of Family Services in Hale County, Alabama) and Josie (18, incoming freshman at the University of Alabama) Georgia Southern Softball 2007 Georgia Southern Softball

12 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE The Southern Conference, which enters its 85th season of intercollegiate competition in 2005, has become known as one of the nation s leaders in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premier Division I-AA football conference since earning that classification in The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the first super conference with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie Choo Choo Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes-Scholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference office is located in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, SC. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference s historical documents. The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. Fourteen institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of In 1922, six more schools - Florida, Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. A year later, the University of the South joined the ranks. Virginia Military Institute became a member in 1925 and Duke University came into the fold in Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions having been affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The first occurred in December 1932 when the Southeastern Conference was formed out of the 23- school Southern Conference. The league s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands that were present in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conference invited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond and Wake Forest to join the membership. The second major shift happened in 1953 when Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest officially withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. This change was brought about due to the desire of many of those schools to schedule a greater number of regular season basketball games against their local rivals. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. The most recent addition, Elon University, joined the Southern Conference on July 1, The Phoenix replaced Virginia Military Institute which left the conference on June 30, East Tennessee State, which joined the SoCon in 1978, left the conference following the conclusion of the academic year. 14 OUTLOOK The question that faces sixth-year head coach Natalie Poole is: what to do for an encore? Last season she led the Eagles to their first NCAA Tournament appearance and the second-most wins in the program s history. The pitching staff that was second in the league in earned run average returns intact. But the 2007 team will be without three influential seniors that include the Southern Conference player of the year, the program s all-time leading home run hitter and single-season RBI record holder. After losing their opening game of the conference tournament, the 2006 team rebounded for six straight wins, eventually capturing their second-ever tournament title. The season-long winning streak was snapped by Georgia in the NCAA Tournament, but the Eagles posted a win over Coastal Carolina before being eliminated. Last year opened the door to so much for our team, said Poole. Not only physically, knowing that physically they can do the job and that they re good enough, but also mentally. This game is so mental and for them to think that they re mentally tough enough, to work through slumps and confidence issues, it was a huge stepping stone for us. The offense needs to be rebuilt as it loses SoCon Player of the Year Shanita Black to graduation. Black set 12 school records in 2006 and was named the SoCon Tournament Most Outstanding Player. Black hit.410 with a school-record 38 stolen bases in the leadoff spot. Replacing a four-year starter is tough but Poole believes freshman second baseman Nina Iduate is capable of filling that role. Whenever we went out recruiting, we went out with the mindset of finding someone who would start things off and be a good leadoff for us and we think we ve found that tendency in Nina. I never want her to think she is a replacement for Shanita - she has her own qualities that are exceptional - but she has developed into a type of athlete that can be a momentum starter and a good leadoff. Also contributing at second base will be senior Katie Smith. Freshman Sam Russo will fill in on several positions in the infield and will also see time at DH. The team loses four of its top five hitters, including Aurora Johnson who will sit out the year with a medical redshirt, but does return senior first baseman Heather Smith. There s no doubt that we have lost basically four of our top five hitters from last year. Heather is the only one who s returning that s in our top five. Aurora is a huge loss because she is powerful. She did a lot to help us offensively in scoring runs. Shanita was a momentum starter. That s difficult to replace. Smith topped the squad in slugging percentage (.500), on base percentage (.443) and doubles (14), and was the toughest on the team to strikeout. Heather has done an exceptional job of being an RBI leader for us and I expect her to do the same thing this year. She plays with a lot of confidence and she knows how to lead our infield. She is an outstanding vocal leader and also leads by example. You ll see her out there everyday working hard - not just talking the talk, but walking the walk behind it. She is someone you can count on to be steady through the year. Teaming up with Smith for a potent one-two punch in the middle of the order is sophomore Robyne Siliga, the 2005 SoCon Freshman of the Year. Siliga hit.304 with nine home runs in her rookie campaign, one shy of the school record. Robyne s return definitely fills a hole for us. When you re off for a year, you aren t sure how that person is going to be physically, losing out on some workouts and maybe some confidence from what they had before or if mentally they re going to be there, if they have the desire and passion to play. She definitely has all of that. She s hitting the ball every day at practice and she s in a state where she s not satisfied so she s going to continue to work to get better. She wants to play, she wants to be on the field and she is going to do good things for us. Siliga will spend part of the time behind the plate, but could move to third based on the production from the left side of the infield and the development of freshman Jenny Side. Anchoring the aforementioned left side of the infield is senior Maria Laurato. The 2004 SoCon Freshman of the Year has struggled at the plate the last two seasons but made up for it with her glove, posting a career-best.954 fielding percentage in Maria has done a lot of things for me. She started out as the freshman of the year at third base and was an all-conference shortstop. She was back at third last year and did an outstanding job defensively. This year I d like to see her leave on a good note offensively the way she is capable of doing. She may see time at third and short and we feel like she can hold down either position. She has also developed into a good vocal leader and is always an extremely hard worker. To her left will be junior Aubrey Thweatt who hit just.128 last year, but did her part by laying down 12 sacrifice bunts, second-highest on the team. The loss of Black and Johnson, combined with the departure of Carrie Mixon, means an entirely new and very inexperienced outfield. Just as she will do with the infield, Poole will determine the outfield based on who is hot at the plate and all three positions will be platooned Georgia Southern Softball 2007 Georgia Southern Softball

15 The outfield has had to put in quite a bit of work this year, and not because we re not capable, but because we needed to mature a young outfield quickly. We worked from the bottom up, starting with fundamentals to communication and leadership. We feel like whoever we stick out there will do the job. It s going to come down to who offensively is going to step up. Senior Ashley Bluestein is the veteran of the group but has limited experience in the outfield and has just 56 career at-bats. Sophomore Michelle Beasley made 15 starts last season, but mostly in a defensive role, and sophomore Jordyn Nail only came on as a pinch-runner. We ve got some good athletes out there. Michelle saw some time in the outfield last year and I expect her to be there. Ashley is an infielder but she s done some work in the outfield and if she s hitting she could definitely see some time. (Jordyn) has worked for a year in maturing herself defensively and offensively. In center, Beasley, redshirt freshman Lindsey Hopkins and true freshman Elizabeth Branan will battle for the starting position. Hopkins is coming off of a season-ending ankle injury she suffered in the third game of the 2006 campaign. With Michelle, Lindsey and Elizabeth, it s going to be a matter of who can outhit who because all of them can cover a lot of ground and make some plays. With the offense looking for new leaders, the pitching staff will be counted on for support. The Eagles have a more than capable duo in senior Logan Free and junior Melissa Laliberte. The pair combined for 31 of the team s 35 wins and 11 shutouts, and during PREVIEW the team s SoCon Tournament run, posted a 0.88 ERA, earning Free a spot on the alltournament team. We have a good combination in Mel and Logan. They worked hand-in-hand a lot last year. Both of them throw the ball hard and are able to move the ball well. They have some confidence going into this year - they know they can do it. We re working through some minor things that we always have to work through at the beginning of the year - minimizing walks and making sure our mechanics are consistent. As far as the belief that they can work their way through their opponents and beat them, it is definitely there and they know they can do it together. Laliberte led the conference in earned run average (1.90) and shutouts (8) and was second behind Free in batting average against (.209). Her shutout total was a new school record. Mel has a year under her belt and she accomplished some good things last year. My expectations are higher of course, and I think her expectations are higher too. Free is a two-time all-conference honoree and has posted 34 wins and 10 shutouts with a 2.38 ERA in her three years. Logan has been a blessing to have here for four years. She knows exactly what I want and what it s going to take to make it happen. She wants to leave on a good note and has put in the work to do that. She is going to be a good leader for us on the mound and I expect her to do her job which is keeping the ball down. Senior A.J. Street will resume her dual role of pitcher and designated player. In the circle she went 4-9 and relied on changing speeds rather than power. I don t think we would have made it as far as we did without A.J. working with our two kids that throw hard. She puts in her innings and does what she does best, which is moving the ball around. I look for her to do a good job whether it s giving us a full game or part of a game. At the plate Street slugged a career-high three home runs and 10 RBI and came through in key situations. She can put the ball in play and can be a heavy hitter. She s a clutch hitter - she was able to drive in some runs at some important times and we re counting on her to do that. Providing Poole with another change-of-pace option out of the bullpen is junior Mandi Stophlet. This team has probably the best chemistry that I ve seen going in to a season at this point. We ve worked on team building, team chemistry and sports psychology to mentally train ourselves. We have emphasized that a lot more and I think that we re going to be more mature earlier in the season. We re going to be more supportive of each other and it s going to be a lot of fun to watch, from the seniors down to the freshmen. It s going to take a combination of all of them to make it work Southern Conference Tournament Champions 2006 NCAA Tournament 13

The 2002 Southern Conference Coach of the Year has a overall record in her four seasons in Statesboro but has excelled in Southern Conference play, posting a mark including a 12-9 slate last season, third in the league standings. Last season Poole guided Georgia Southern to its first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance after winning the SoCon Tournament with six straight wins. The SoCon title was just the second in the school s history. Poole rallied the team from a 1-7 start to post a overall record. The 35 wins are secondmost in school history. The Eagles received several record-breaking performances under her guidance in 2006, specifically Shanita Black, who was named the league s Player of the Year, as well as the Tournament s Most Outstanding Player and All- Southeast Region. Black broke 12 school records by herself and was part of an offense that set six more as a team including batting average (.277), slugging percentage (.393), runs (274), hits (508), home runs (38) and walks (182). The pitching staff held their own and finished the season second in earned run average at 2.72 and first in batting average against and tied for first in shutouts, led by Melissa Laliberte s school-record eight. The 2005 schedule featured games against five ranked opponents, including Alabama, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Tennessee and Georgia, each of whom advanced to the NCAA Regionals. The Eagles split a doubleheader with Florida State, ranked 10th in the nation. Her 2005 team set several school records, most notably the new home run record of 34, besting the previous mark of 26 set in In fact, the three top home run totals in school history have all come under Poole s watch. GSU also set new school highs in slugging percentage (.368) and tied the walk record of 144. Georgia Southern hasn t just excelled at the plate in Poole s tenure. 19 books, and posted 14 shutouts, equaling GSU s high mark set twice previously. Poole made an immediate impact on the program in her first year, guiding the Eagles to a overall record, but more significantly, a 15-6 mark in the Southern Conference, setting a new school record for league victories in a season. The 25 wins were also the most by a first-year coach in school history. That season began with nine straight losses and a 5-18 record before turning it around and winning 18 of 24. A second-place finish in the SoCon earned her Coach of the Year honors. Poole became the third head coach in GSU fastpitch history when she was named to the position on June 7, 2001, ending a three-year stint as an assistant coach at McNeese State (La.) University. 40 SEASON REVIEW Black Named Socon Player Of The Year Georgia Southern outfielder Shanita Black was named the 2006 Southern Conference Softball Player of the Year, the league announced at its award banquet May 10 in Chattanooga. Black s Player of the Year nod is the first for the program since the conference began sponsoring softball in Black earned All-SoCon recognition for the third time, including two-straight first team honors. A senior from Fayetteville, N.C., Black set 12 school records last season, including a 30-game hitting streak in March and April. She is GSU s all-time leader in hits (282), runs (162), triples (13), batting average (.350) and stolen bases (88). Her 2006 totals in runs (64), hits (97), triples (8) and stolen bases (37) led the Southern Conference and are also new school records. Black held a.408 batting average on the season, secondhighest in the SoCon and second-best in school history. She set a new league mark for single-season hits and was two triples, three stolen bases and three runs from becoming the new conference leader in those categories. She ranked in the top 50 in the nation in stolen bases per game (11th), triples per game (13th), runs per game (13th) and batting average (37th). Twice last season Black was named Player of the Week, and she was dubbed the SoCon s Player of the Month for April. Against league foes she hit.467, tops in the conference. Steiner Sets New Home Run Record... Sam Steiner set a new Georgia Southern career home run record in an 11-2 win over Florida A&M on Feb. 12. Steiner entered the season in second place all-time with 15 homers and tied Kim Griffin s mark by crushing the first pitch she saw this season for a grand slam. Three games later, her round-tripper was one of five on the afternoon for the Eagles in a split with the Rattlers. After being tied at the top of the charts with teammate Aurora Johnson April 15, she regained her spot at No. 1 with two jacks vs. College of Charleston in the SoCon Tournament. Her seven homers last season were third-most at GSU and her total of six in her freshman year are tied for fourth....but Here Comes Aurora Steiner s hold on the career home run record was short as junior Aurora Johnson tied her later in the season. Johnson s round-tripper March 21 at Charleston Southern moved her past Griffin into second place all-time at GSU with 17. She later tied Steiner on April 15, going long in a 2-0 win over College of Charleston. She had eight in 2006, which surpassed her total from the 2005 season (six) and ranks fourth in single-season school history. Her prodigious home run hitting helped her tally the third-best slugging percentage in school history at.447. All Good Things Must Come To An End Shanita Black s school-record 30-game hitting streak was snapped April 19 at Georgia. The run, which started March 2, ended with an 0-for-4 performance in game one against the eighth-ranked Bulldogs. The streak began against South Carolina State with two hits. During the streak Black had 18 multi-hit games, including a run of six in a row, and hit.473 with 38 runs scored. She bested the previous mark of 17 held by Danelle Toole in April, Black Enjoys Record-Setting Season Senior Shanita Black had a season for the ages as she set or tied five different school career records. It took just three games for her to become the second player in school history to reach the 100-run plateau and she overtook the record Feb. 17 against Troy with her 103rd run. She then set her sights on the stolen base mark of 66 surpassing it March 26 at Appalachian State. Black began her GSU-record 30-game hitting streak March 2, helping her to the top of the career hits chart with 282. Her prowess at the plate moved her into first place in batting average (.350). She set the school s career triple mark with 13, thanks to a single-season record eight last year. In addition to her new triples achievement, she also broke the school s single-season at bats, runs, hits and stolen bases record. Her hit total set a new Southern Conference record. Laliberte, And Justice For All In just her first season at Georgia Southern, sophomore Melissa Laliberte made an impact on the GSU pitching staff. She ranked first in the SoCon in earned run average (1.86) and shutouts (8) and second in batting average against (.204) behind teammate Logan Free. Her shutout total was a new Georgia Southern singleseason record. She set the mark with two whitewashings in the SoCon Tournament, blanking UNC Greensboro 2-0 and Furman 4-0 in the title game. The Cobourg, Ontario native earned First Team All- Southern Conference honors in voting done by the league s eight head coaches. She was named the conference s Pitcher of the Week three times, the last coming after she threw two shutouts in the final weekend of the season against league champion Western Carolina. Free At Last, Free At Last The Eagles rode the arms of their two pitchers in winning the SoCon Tournament, notably Logan Free who was tabbed to the all-tournament team. The junior from Sandpoint, Idaho went 3-0 with a 0.52 earned run average while holding the opposition to a.147 batting average. In 27 innings she allowed two runs and 14 hits with 21 strikeouts and just three walks. During the regular season Free was also the toughest pitcher in the league to hit, leading the SoCon in batting average against and was named Second Team All-Southern Conference for the second straight year. Double No-No In GSU s sweep of South Carolina State, Melissa Laliberte and A.J. Street teamed up to throw a double no-hitter. Laliberte walked four and struck out five in a 9-0 shutout while Street walked one and K d seven, but didn t get the shutout as the Bulldogs took advantage of two GSU errors. The last Eagle no-hitter was thrown by Logan Free on Feb. 25, 2005 against St. Francis. Black Is April s Player Of The Month Georgia Southern senior Shanita Black was named the Southern Conference Softball Player of the Month for April. Black recorded a hit in 16 of the Eagles 20 games in April, including 10 multi-hit games. She went 9-for-9 on the basepaths and did not make an error in 31 chances. Five Eagles Named To All-SoCon Teams In addition to Shanita Black being tabbed the SoCon s Player of the Year, four of her teammates also earned all-conference distinction. Sophomore pitcher Melissa Laliberte and junior first baseman Heather Smith were placed on the first team while junior pitcher Logan Free and senior second baseman Gina Sterchi were named to the second team. The three first team honorees are the most the program has ever garnered and the five overall ties GSU s high set in Joining Black on the first team are Laliberte and Smith. Laliberte is with a league-leading 1.86 earned run average. The Cobourg, Ontario, Canada native is the back-to-back reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Week, having earned the award a total of three times this season, and is coming off two shutouts in the tournament. Opponents are hitting just.204 off her, second-best in the SoCon, and she has eight shutouts, tied for first in the league and a new school record. Laliberte saved her best for SoCon teams, tossing four shutouts and holding the opposition to a.172 batting average.
