1 Waterford Valley Sports Welcome Gerry Veitch Park Play slowpitch, fastpitch and basketball with us this summer... k Weather Update: All activities have been cancelled Tuesday August16th due to poor weather conditions. If you are unsure about anything please contact our supervisor at the shed. Welcome to the home of the Express! Waterford Valley is located in the west end of St. John s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The association offers programs in slowpitch and fastpitch softball in all minor divisions as well as a basketball program to all ages. We offer an eight week program during the summer months which is made possible by local volunteers. The City of St. John s provides an operating grant that covers the supervisor position and the other workers are paid through provincial and federal student grants. The program consists of daily skills development clinics, two games a week during the evenings and Friday is always a family fun day where children go on field trips around the city. Our goal is to promote physical fitness, sportsmanship and a spirit of fair play among our players at all levels. 2 News 2011 NL Selects Win Silver at Bantam Eastern Canadian Waterford Valley had half the players on the team including Jordan Noftal, Michael King, Adam Healey, Ryan Kenny, Jordan Boland and Isaac Davis-Power. The boys won four straight games on Saturday and Sunday to get to the final against Tavistock Ontario. The boys battled until the end but lost in the 8th inning in a back and fourth thrilling game. Along the way NL beat third place Kitchener Ontario 6-3 and first place St. Leonard, Quebec 9-5 to get to the final. It was a tremendous day for NL softball and we are all very proud! Waterford Valley Wins Bantam Provincial Waterford Valley Bantams defeated CBC 7-0 in 5 innings to win the 2011 Provincial title at Huck Willams Field in Kilbride. Isaac Davis-Power pitched the win surrendering just one hit and one walk in 5 innings of work. Waterford Valley went 5-0 in the tourney scoring 40 runs while giving up just 4 earned runs in 29 innings of work. Jordan Noftal and Isaac Davis-Power combined for an ERA. Jordan Boland led the Valley attack with 8 hits in 14 trips to the plate (0.571 BA) followed by Michael King with 6 hits in 14 at bats (0.429BA). The entire team combined for 38 hits in 110 at bats for an incredible team batting avergae of It was certainly a team win. Way to go Valley! Local Peewee Picked Up for Eastern Canadian Tournament Congratulations to Shane Dobbin on being selected by Goulds to travel to Nova Scotia to represent Newfoundland and Labrador at this years Peewee Boys Eastern Canadian Tournament. Shane came home with a bronze medal. Congratulations.

4 Basketball 2011 The basketball court is next to Gerry Veitch Field Waterford Valley Sports will be offering a summer basketball program to all participants. If you wish to register for basketball go to the registration tab above, download the form and return the form with payment to our supervisor at the Shed on Waterfordbridge Rd. Registrations will be accepted starting June 27th, All minor aged players male or female are welcome to signup regardless of where they live. All games and daytime clinics for T-Ball, Mite and Squirt is played at Gerry Veitch Field located near the west entrance to Bowering Park on Waterford Bridge road at the intersection of Brookfield Rd. and Waterford Bridge Rd. If coming from the east on Topsail Rd. turn right at the Brookfield Rd. Fire Station. 8 Tournaments 2011 Provincial Tournaments Each year Softball Newfoundland and Labrador hosts a provincial tournmament for each minor division that are held by the various softball associations around the province. Provincial Tournament Schedules Constable William Moss Memorial Tournament The Constable William Moss Minor Softball Tournament was inaugurated in 1980 through the personal efforts of Constable Gary Browne, Mr. Peter Harvey, then president of Softball Newfoundland, and Mrs. Gen Adams of the Cabot Street Recreation Association. Constable William (Bill) Moss of Port Blandford was a member of the constabulary who tragically lost his young life in a violent labour dispute at Badger in 1959 commonly referred to as The Badger Riot. Constable Moss died on March 12, 1959, at Grand Falls, two days after receiving a severe blow to the head from a piece of pulpwood during an altercation. Seventy-eight members of the constabulary were sent to assist the RCMP during the Badger Riot. The Const. Moss Memorial Tournament began in 1980 with just four St. John s inter-city teams. In just a few short years, the event had become, as it is to this day, the premier boys and girls tournament in our province, with as many as 30 teams participating. The tournament quickly far surpassed all police and community expectations relating to the breaking down of barriers between law enforcement members and our youth. This year s tournament is scheduled for July 11th - 15th in St. John s around the city ballparks depending on which division you play.

9 Waterford Valley History Present Waterford Valley Sports Association was started in 1981 and has taught over five thousand children over its rich 30 year history. Many people have volunteered to make this association successful and would not exist without them. As you can see from this website many hours go into such an organization and we would welcome anybody who would like to help continue the tradition.
