The more you hit the stake, it moves you up in rank. It's not the wins or losses, that make this sport so great, But challenges and exercise, and all the friends you make Now how does a pitcher make it to "Class A"? By practice and pitching a hundred shoes a day? No, it's not about the class that counts... when you play for fun. But pitching your very best and still lose the game by one! Thanks, all pitchers and all promoters of the shoe. Jacob The ichigan Horseshoe Pitcher s Association is hosting its 95th annual state championships Saturday, Aug. 25 and Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Kalamazoo Area Horseshoe Club behind VFW Post 1527 off of Kilgore Service Road. Admission is free. ore than 80 participants from across the state, representing a variety of skill levels are expected to compete in the event. Competitors must have pitched in at least four organized events in the state to quality. Depending on what class you re watching, like Class A, you would be amazed at how many ringers were thrown. If you watch Dick Frakes a lower class the, competition could make the pitcher s jaws ache. It is so intense. There s a lot more to the game than anybody thinks. Just being in the backyard nobody cares. But this this is blood," says Dick Frakes, president and a founder of the club. They re coming from all over the state and they re getting ready to have fun before they send the kids off to school in September. There are 18 lighted courts at the Kalamazoo Horseshoe Club, located next to the main landing path at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport. Before the club was founded in 1980, this area held rodeos and other horse events, and was covered with large piles of manure. Frakes and Doug Bailey is ready to welcome you. Kalamazoo Horseshoe Club Officers President: Dick Frakes Vice President: Clayton Champion Tournament Director: Josh Lull Overseers of all of the happenings; Josh Lull and Owen ergen Club Workers: Owen ergen, Chuck Osborn, Kary Christiansen, Will Plankenhorn, AJ Laporte, ike Walton, ikey Waldon. They work hard attracting new members and making club improvements. some friends got to work removing the waste, leveled the land and the courts were born. The humble game, like so many, has its standards and rules. Championship rounds go to 40 points. Ringers count for three points and shoes within six inches of the post count for one point. Pitchers must move counter-clockwise around the pit after they re done pitching, Frakes says. Competitive horseshoe pitching has rules, sure, but what most distinguishes it from the backyard is throwers keen appreciation of court-side etiquette, Frakes says. Rule No. One: Be Nice. The only difference between the backyard and this one is this one is a little more organized and less verbal, says Frakes. Live life to the fullest pitch horseshoes! What Frakes means by that is that strong language isn't acceptable in the championships, this is professional. OFFICIAL NWSLTTR argaret OF J. 2 The Ringer Report - ichigan Horseshoe Pitchers Association - June 2018 PRSIDNT S O Paul Bachelor 2018 State Tournament Again, just a reminder that this year s State Tournament will be held the weekend BFOR the Labor Day weekend and NOT on the Labor Day weekend as traditionally scheduled. The Kalamazoo Club will be our host. All entrants will need to get their required 4 minimum tournaments in. The last tournament before the State Tournament is Sunday, Aug. 19, at Jackson. As most of you know, a committee was formed to determining the pitching schedule for the 2-day weekend. They have been working hard and are finalizing the proposed schedule. It s a difficult task to get all the required activities in. I want to thank them for their work and effort. When the schedule is finalized, I m sure we can expect some changes from the traditional format. Some change is necessary for the shorter weekend. Please be open to things being a little bit different, and keep in mind the goal is to get more of our pitchers at the State Tournament Seniors Tournament The Seniors Tournament will be held Sunday, Aug. 12, at Lake Orion. This is the Sunday following the State Doubles Tournament. Note this change from the traditional Friday evening of the State Tournament. Hopefully, we ll have a large turnout. You must be 60 years of age or older to participate. World Tournament ichigan has 21 pitchers registered for this year s World Tournament in Florence, SC. This is a fairly normal turnout for our Charter. You can go to the NHPA website and view the registrants and their pitching times. And you ve got to learn how to breathe. When you get ready to throw the horseshoe you got to stop your breathing. Don t breathe in, don t breathe out. It ll change the way the shoe lands in the pit. To promote the sport of horseshoe pitching statewide and nationwide. No association can exist without dues paying members. We have people at both the state and national level who work hard to see we are a well organized and well recognized source for horseshoe pitching rules and regulations worldwide. 2. To improve your pitching ability. When records are kept, and organized rules are followed, there is a better chance to improve your ringer percentage, and overall game. This happens by participating in a horseshoe club or in a reasonable number of sanctioned tournaments. You will also have the opportunity to enter a HPA state tournament, or even a World Tournaments. 3. To help stay physically fit. Horseshoe pitching can have a positive effect on our health. The throwing, walking, and bending are a good moderate form of exercise. If you do have back problems, our sport allows you to use a pick-up hook device to retrieve your horseshoes, and eliminate the bending. 4. To be a well informed participant. By joining the HPA you become a subscriber to the Ringer Report, the ichigan State Official horseshoe pitching newsletter. This helps to keep you informed on happenings in our state. You may also subscribe to the online national newsletter, Newsline, which will keep you informed of what s happening on the national scene. 5. To make new and lasting friendships. Horseshoe pitchers are great people! ost have a lot of fun, whether they are winning or losing. They look forward to getting together on a regular basis. any close and lasting friendships are formed between those who have been competitors while out on the courts. 6. Because it is a game that is very affordable. Without a doubt, horseshoes is one of the most affordable games out there. Tournament entry fees are very reasonable, and a pair of horseshoes can last a long time. Stay connected with the NHPA through the new electronic version of Newsline. Free. No commitment. Simply provide your today. (Your will NOT be used or sold for any other purpose.) SUBSCRIB > Anyone can pitch any brand of shoe. Adjustments are needed. In a world tournament game against Casey Jones, I was so intense, I took another pitcher s shoes off the fence and pitched the whole game without noticing it. I hit 85% and defeated Jones. 5 Tournament Director & Club Reports Berkley - ark Lankin mwlankin@sbcglobal.net Brighton - Paul Bachelor paulbachelor@aol.com Brighton had some celebrity guests show up at our tournament on Saturday June 2. Alan and Amy Francis came from Defiance, Ohio, to pitch with us. The weather was good (not too hot or too cold) and the pitching was even better. I think our out-ofstate guests enjoyed pitching with us; our members that were present did a great job of representing our Charter The Ringer Report - ichigan Horseshoe Pitchers Association - June 2018 Hello, veryone. I want to thank those who braved the predictably unpredictable weather which is Berkley Days. A good time was had by all. As far as the status of the club, it will not be decided till the end of the year. Any updates, I will pass them along. Thanks again to everyone who helped me out during Berkley Days weekend. ark Lankin Alan Francis Quincy Johnson both from a competition and a hospitality standpoint. I wouldn t be surprised if Alan and Amy came back to ichigan to pitch in the future. Bob and Terry Beagle arranged for this event, and I want to personally thank them for their efforts in pulling it off. Not only did they arrange for the Francis s to come, but also arranged for many of our top pitchers to attend, to insure Alan and Amy had strong competition. The Brighton League started Tuesday, ay 1. We ve had a couple of new members join and possibly another. So that is encouraging. Paul Bachelor Kalamazoo - Josh Lull joshlull@gmail.com Our new doubles league has started and attendance of the singles league has been great. We cannot wait to see everyone for the state tournament. Josh Lull, Tournament Director (President continued from Page 2) will also have webcams where you can watch the pitchers in real time, as well as daily updates on results for games pitched that day. I wish all the ichigan pitchers good luck (and good skill). Officer lections As I mentioned in the last Ringer Report, I will not be seeking re-election to the President Office at the State Tournament. I have been enjoying the time as your president, and do not find it to be too taxing. However, the main reason I m not running is for personal reasons. y wife thinks watching a horseshoe tournament is like watching paint dry she s not too excited by it. I spend quite a bit of time running the Brighton League and HPA tournaments, as well as maintaining the courts and grounds. When I add the time and energy I spend on the president s responsibilities, my wife is not too supportive, and it is creating a little tension between us. And this is something I just cannot allow to continue. So something has to give. Please give some thought to potential candidates for this position. There is still much that needs to be done to strengthen our Charter and improve the pitching experience for our members. Paul Bachelor, HPA President Holt - Tina Schafer tschafer59@yahoo.com Sanctioned Tournament - Sat., June 30 From I-96 xit 104/Cedar St. Take Cedar St. South 1/2 mile to Willoughby and turn right. Travel west 1/2 mile to ifert Road and turn left. Go approximately 2.5 miles south on ifert Road and we are located on the right side. From Highway 127 xit on to Holt Road and travel west for 3.5 miles to ifert Road, turn left. Go approximately 1 mile south on ifert and we are located on the right side. Jackson - ark Burns burnsmo@umich.edu The Jackson Horseshoe club is going well so far this summer. We have had great weather, which is always a bonus when you are pitching shoes outside. We are one week away from our first round position night and it looks like it could come down to about 4-5 teams fighting for first place. Jackson is looking forward to the Terry Beagle Open on June 16th and the Tom Burns emorial July 1st Tournaments again this year. Both tournaments had great turn outs last year and we hope for the same this year with the Tom Burns emorial being moved outside. See you on the courts! ark Burns Kalamazoo Hotel Accommodations for State Tournament A block of rooms have been set-up at the Country Inn and Suites in Kalamazoo for the weekend of the state tournament. (The block begins Friday evening.) King rooms and double Queen rooms have been secured. (Other room accommodations are usually possible) The rate is $ a night. For those not familiar with our club or Kalamazoo, this is the hotel right next door to the courts. Depending on the room, you can literally walk out of your room and directly onto our courts. When reserving, let them know you are there for the state tournament that weekend and would like to take advantage of the block set up by the Kalamazoo Area Horseshoe club for the ichigan Horseshoe Pitchers Association. Country Inn & Suites by Radisson 1912 Kilgore Road Portage, I If anyone has any trouble, let Josh Lull know Constitution and By-laws Changes The Constitution and By-laws may be revised by submitting changes at any membership meeting or sent to the chairperson of the Constitution and Bylaws Committee, 1st Vice-President John Stephenson, by July 15th. All proposed revisions are voted on at the State Tournament meeting. Any additions, deletions and/or changes takes a two-thirds vote of members present at the meeting and become effective January 1st of the following year. Hall of Fame nomination forms must be received by June 15th for the nominee to be included in the voting for that year. Send HOF form to Doug Bailey. (See page 2 for addresses.) 6 The Ringer Report - ichigan Horseshoe Pitchers Association - June 2018 Tournament Director & Club Reports Lincoln Park - Derrick Gyorkos unclederrick6870@yahoo.com As I see it. The ay 12th and 13th tournaments at Lincoln Park were cancelled, due to inclement weather. As all tournament directors know, the real work of hosting outside tournaments takes a lot of preparation time. If you are attending a tournament, and it is cancelled, please thank the director for putting forth a time consuming effort to get the tournament ready. With the world tournament close at hand, try to set aside time to watch the pitchers on the NHPA website. It is fun to watch and makes you wish you were there. It is a great experience being there. The HPA state tournament was moved from Labor day weekend to August 24th thru the 26th in order to increase participation for more pitchers. Please make every effort to attend. It is a great time for camaraderie and competition. ark Wolffradt Lansing - Randall Kamm (517) automerch@yahoo.com The Greater Lansing Area Horseshoe Club is growing again. We have 9 new members including 6 adults, 2 cadets and 1 junior in our sanctioned league. It is a pleasure to be pitching with youth again. ost of the adults and all of the youth are new to horseshoe pitching. After having played for a few weeks, they are all glad they joined. They have a lot of fun every week. We hope they will further their interest by participating in other NHPA related activities. Our Friday evening tournament in ay went off without a hitch. The lights stayed on, the weather was good and the courts were in good condition. The Saturday tournament was also good as the bad weather held off. It was cloudy most of the day so it helped the pitchers stay a little cooler. Our next tournament is scheduled for July 28th. It is a St. Jude benefit and will be run by Keith Schafer. All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to St. Jude Children's Hospital. Please plan to join us for this important tournament. We wish good luck to all who are going to the World Tournament this year in Florence South Carolina. The Lansing club has 5 members who will be attending. We wish them good travels and good luck pitching! Randall Kamm Lake Orion - Doug Bailey patanddougbailey@att.net Greetings from the Lake Orion Horseshoe Club. Our Tuesday night league is off to another great season with 52 members which includes 11 being new to horseshoes. Like many clubs, we are faced with many challenges, one of them is an aging member; our oldest member is Bill Vincent at 88 years young he still plays and travels playing horseshoes with the senior Olympics, He took Gold last year for his division. Butch Terry holds the seniority record with our club. He has 36 years and is still pitching with us. Sad to say we lost Budd Wethy on ; although health problems prevented him from pitching the last 2 years he was always there to support the club and the members. Our prayers go out to Budd s family and many friends; he will be greatly missed. The second challenge is to keep the membership you have, if possible, by involving them in the managing of the club. very member can become an Ambassador for horseshoes. Here is an example. Tim Kelly has been with our club 4 years now. We recently asked the membership to reach out to friends to bring in new people. Tim this year brought 5 new players to sign-up night. Tim also volunteered to become our statistician due our long time stats person, Russ DuRoss, moving to another city. This is a tough job and Tim is doing a great job. LOHC will be doing our lottery raffle this year, but the drawing month will be September. Thank you in advance for your support! We will be selling the raffle tickets shortly. Did you know that in 1910 the stake height was only 2 inches above ground level? Nine years later in 1919 it was raised to 8 inches. In 1920, raised to 10 inches. Twenty years later in 1940 it was raised to 12 inches and, finally, in State Doubles Championship Lake Orion 1950 it was raised to 15 inches. I guess it will stay this height! Some may like it higher. We have major construction going close to our courts. The Fire Station is being renovated to include outside restrooms. The construction will not be complete before the State Doubles, but we still promise you a wonderful experience. Plan on attending and visiting us in the beautiful Village of Lake Orion. Ron Price Lapeer - Debbie arkley dcdam1278@aol.com The Cramton Park horseshoe pits will be hopping busy Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, when the HPA hosts a tournament in Lapeer, bringing horseshoe enthusiasts from throughout ichigan. The Lapeer Horseshoe Club League begins play at 7 p.m. on ondays and continues until darkness overtakes the park. If horseshoes sounds like fun, drop by Cramton Park to speak with local club members. There is a $20 fee for the season that wraps up with a banquet where awards are presented and further camaraderie is enjoyed. St. Clair Shores - Dean Schmitz horseshoe48043@gmail.com Our lighting project may not be dead, as President John Thomachefski and I met with the Recreation Director June 8 to renew the bidding process. The August Thursday evening sanctioned tournament is cancelled. We held this tournament the past two years, but the lighting was so inadequate that pitchers had to use cell phone lights to determine a ringer. The heart of the SCSHC rests with the Tuesday Doubles Leagues. Twelve teams make up the early league and 22 teams are in the late league. That s 68 pitchers in one night. These leagues generate the majority of our new pitchers. After working an eighthour day, most want to pitch for an hour and half, then go home. They have been on their feet all day and don t have the energy to walk nearly another mile pitching in a singles league. As with most HPA clubs, the singles leagues seem to lacking in pitchers. The onday Recreation singles league has 12 pitchers and the sanctioned Thursday league has 10 pitchers this year. We may be down because sanctioned leaguers don t want to pay our $40 club fee. Also, the NHPA fee went up $8 which many pitchers are protesting. The 2018 version of our SCSHC Horseshoe Pitchers Guide Book has been published. It is free to all new members and can be purchased for $5 by all others and will be available at our sanctioned tournaments. Boyd Stonerock, of Lucky Shoe Pro Shop, returned for our emorial Tournament with a great display of horseshoes and paraphernalia. Our tournament on June 9th was attended by 15 participants and enough scorekeepers to hold off the threatening weather. July 7th will be our final yearly tournament. Dean Participants: Help the TD s by bringing the correct fee money. It will speed up check-in. Bring dollars for scorekeepers. It is good etiquette to wear a tournament shirt at all events. 6 of 12 OFFICIAL NWSLTTR OF TH ICHIGAN HORSSHO PITCHRS ASSOCIATION

Basil (Budd) Wethy ( ) Wethy, Basil (Budd) of Lake Orion; was born August 6, 1935; in Lake Orion to loving parents, Basil and arvel (nee Dickinson) Wethy. Upon high school graduation, Budd married the love of his life, Lorraine (nee Abbey), with whom he spent the rest of his life, gloriously happy. After a stint in the army, Budd joined General otors and became a member of the lectrical Apprentice program. With the training and experience that he received at G, Budd started his own electrical contracting company, later adding heating and cooling to the skills and services he offered. As a self-employed contractor, Budd shared knowledge with his sons, son-inlaw, grandsons, nephews, and family friends and was proud that he lit the entrepreneurial spirit in several of them. A dedicated, hard-working man, Budd immensely enjoyed time with his family camping, fishing, hunting, or anything outdoors. If Budd wasn't working, he was probably at family property (affectionately called The Farm) in Sears, ichigan, playing on a backhoe and mucking around in ponds. Budd also had an artistic streak. Periodically, he would get out paints, pencils, or even a harmonica, and let his creative juices flow. He became an active member of the Lake Orion Horseshoe and Skymasters R/ C of ichigan clubs, building his own aircraft and dreaming of a sky full of his creations. Budd leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Lorraine; children Steve (Patsy) Wethy, Todd (Lyn) Wethy, and Patrice (Rob) Pullano; grandchildren Scott (mily) Wethy, Brad Wethy, Sarah (Jordan) Berry, Nick (Jessica) Pullano, onique Wethy; and great-granddaughter Anna Wethy. 8 The Ringer Report - ichigan Horseshoe Pitchers Association - June 2018 Constitution and By-laws Changes Proposed changes in 2018 Proposal 1 Article II: Administration - Section 2. Current: The Board of Directors is required to meet a minimum of two times each year with one such meeting at the State Championship Tournament. Proposed: The Board of Directors is required to meet a minimum of two times each year. Reason: There is never time at the State Tournament to conduct a meaningful meeting. Proposal 2 Article IV: Club Charters - Section 4. Current: Annual membership dues are $ Dues shall be distributed as follows: A. $17.00 NHPA embership Dues B. $5.00 General Fund C. $4.00 State Tournament Fund D. $7.00 Newsletter. $1.00 Secretary/Treasurer F. $1.00 Statistician Proposed: Annual membership dues shall be the cost of the NHPA annual membership dues (currently $25) plus $20 for the PHA annual dues (current total is $45). Dues shall be distributed as follows: A. $17.00 NHPA embership Dues B. $5.00 General Fund C. $6.00 State Tournament Fund D. $7.00 Newsletter. $1.00 Secretary/Treasurer F. $1.00 Statistician Reasons: 1. nable the mandatory changes to annual dues that the NHPA may impose, without requiring changes to the HPA by-laws. Because the HPA bylaws specifically define annual dues, any change to the NHPA dues requires a formal change to our constitution. 2. Increase the HPA dues by $2.00 per year. The increase would provide additional funding for the State Tournament awards and payouts. 3. It rounds up the current HPA dues from $43 to $45. Proposal #3 If Proposal #2 above is approved, this proposal is withdrawn. Article IV: Club Charters - Section 4. Annual membership dues are $ Dues shall be distributed as follows: Proposed: Annual membership dues shall be the cost of the NHPA annual membership dues (currently $25) plus $18 for the PHA annual dues (current total is $43). Dues shall be distributed as follows: Reason: Changes to the NHPA dues currently requires a formal change to our constitution. Proposal #4 Article VI: Tournaments - Section 4. ntry fees for district tournaments shall be $15.00 (minimum) with the following prize money breakdown. 3-Person 4-Person 5- Person 6-Person 7-Person 8-Person 1 st - $20 1 st - $24 1 st - $25 1 st - $30 1 st - $30 1 st - $35 2 nd - $13 2 nd - $20 2 nd - $20 $2 nd - $21 2 nd - $22 2 nd - $25 3 rd - $10 3 rd - $15 3 rd - $15 3 rd - $18 4 th - $10 4 th - $10 Proposed: ntry fees for Indoor and Outdoor district tournaments shall be $15.00 (minimum). The HPA xecutive Council will be responsible for defining and publishing minimum payouts for both Indoor and Outdoor district tournaments. Reason: The prize money breakdown for outdoor tournaments is defined in the HPA Constitution and by-laws. However, the prize money for Indoor Tournaments does not follow the breakdown defined by the HPA Constitution and by-laws (and therefore is in violation of the HPA Constitution and by-laws). Placing the xecutive Council in charge of defining and publishing tournament payouts streamlines the process, and allows for quick response if changes are needed. The by-laws for the Charters of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin do NOT define prize money breakdown for tournaments. So this proposal puts HPA more in line with what neighboring charters do. Proposal #5 If Proposal #4 above is approved, this proposal will be withdrawn. Article VI: Tournaments - Section 4. ntry fees for district tournaments shall be $15.00 (minimum) with the following prize money breakdown. 3-Person 4-Person 5- Person 6-Person 7-Person 8-Person 1 st - $20 1 st - $24 1 st - $25 1 st - $30 1 st - $30 1 st - $35 2 nd - $13 2 nd - $20 2 nd - $20 $2 nd - $21 2 nd - $22 2 nd - $25 3 rd - $10 3 rd - $15 3 rd - $15 3 rd - $18 4 th - $10 4 th - $10 Proposed: ntry fees for Outdoor district tournaments will be $15.00 (minimum) with the following prize money breakdown. 2 -Person 3-Person 4-Person 5-Person 6-Person 7-Person 8-Person 1 st $9 $20 $24 $25 $30 $30 $35 2 nd $13 $20 $20 $21 $22 $25 3 rd $10 $15 $15 $18 4 th $10 $10 ntry fees for Indoor district tournaments shall be $15.00 (minimum), with $6.00 per entry paid to the host facility (Jackson) for facility usage, and with the following prize money breakdown. 2 -Person 3-Person 4-Person 5-Person 6-Person 7-Person 8-Person 1st $7 $15 $18 $20 $22 $22 $24 2nd $6 $10 $15 $15 $15 $16 3rd $7 $7 $10 4th $5 $6 Reason: The prize money breakdown for outdoor tournaments is defined in the HPA Constitution and by-laws. However, the prize money does not follow the breakdown defined by the HPA Constitution and by-laws (and therefore is in violation of the HPA Constitution and by-laws). This is due to the Facilities Charge paid to the host facility (Jackson Club). Since our by-laws define the entry fee and prize money for Tournaments (Article VI, Section 4), we are in conflict with our by-laws for all the indoor tournaments. Proposal #6 Judges at the State Tournament be paid $15.00 per session. Take the money out of the general fund instead of coming out of the President s pocket. 8 of 12 OFFICIAL NWSLTTR OF TH ICHIGAN HORSSHO PITCHRS ASSOCIATION

Before the Tournament started, a Judges clinic was held, where 17 individuals came for over an hour to hear the presentation. There were twenty teams from seven states represented. 11 INSTRUCTIONS - HPA State Doubles Tournament Scoresheet 1. Fill in info at top of scoresheet: CLASS, GA #, COURT #, DAT, TA 'A' ID, TA 'B' ID. 2. Fill in pitchers names on LH side of scoresheet. 'Team A #1' is highest ringer % pitcher from team A. Team B #1 is highest ringer % pitcher from team B. Team A #2 is lower ringer % pitcher from team A, and Team B #2 is lower ringer % pitcher from team #2. 3. All games start from the designated 'Start of Game' end. The Highest seeded pitchers from both teams will begin play from this end. All innings will start at this end. 4. Note the small number (1, 2, 3 or 4) in the upper LH side of the all boxes where the pitchers score is recorded. This number indicates which pitcher pitches 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th for that inning. Begin the game by having #1 pitch, followed by #2, then by #3 & #4 (opposite pit). 5. The pitchers walk to the opposite court, where they pitched the shoes. The Higher seeded team ALWAYS calls the score, calling their score first then their opponents (I.. 2-4). ALWAYS GT TH SCOR FRO TH HIGHR RINGR % PITCHRS FIRST, then from the lower % pitchers!!! This is how the score sheet is set up. It will be a big help in getting the scores right. Fill in the score for the inning as they are called. 6. Once the scores are recorded for an inning, fill in the "Running Totals" for each team: entally add Team A scores for Pitcher #1 and #2 for that inning. Add that to the running total scores from the previous inning, and record. Do the same for Team B pitchers. 7. Continue pitching innings and recording scores. Note, only the higher seeded pitchers (#1 Pitchers) pitch the last inning. The lower seeded pitchers do not pitch. 8. Games that are tied after 50 shoes will be broken by using a 'Down and Back' format by all 4 players (See scoresheet 9. Confirm score using boxes at the bottom half of the scoresheet.
