2 Nebraka Cooperative Extenion EC UNIVERSfiY OF NEBR. I ''.:l!:l "~ r:-~ C t r d P. 1 G V: )1~Y o er 1 1e erenn1a ra arietie RecoiTIInended for Nebraka Bruce Anderon, Extenion Forage Specialit Ken Hladek, State Range Conervationit, U.S. Soil Conervation Service Roger Kanable, State Conervation Agronomit, U.S. Soil Conervation Service More than 100 pecie of perennial grae are adapted to and grown in Nebraka. They are claified a either "cooleaon" or "warm-eaon" grae. Cool-eaon grae grow rapidly during pring, often uing mot of the readily available oil moiture and nitrogen. They are nearly dormant during ummer. Regrowth in late ummer and fall occur a cool temperature and oil moiture return. Often they remain partly green throughout winter but will not grow until frot become le frequent and le evere. Warm-eaon grae begin low growth about one month later than cool-eaon grae. Growth i rapid in late pring and early ummer a thee grae make efficient ue of available oil moiture and nutrient. Growth generally ceae by late ummer or early fall although live, green tiue uually remain until a hard freeze kill all top growth. Full eaon pature program uually benefit from having eparate pature of warm-eaon grae and cool-eaon grae. Both tocking rate and average daily gain can be increaed 25 percent by grazing cool-eaon grae in pring and fall and warm-eaon grae in ummer compared to grazing jut one type of gra the entire growing eaon. Mixture containing cool- and warm-eaon grae in the ame pature uually are impractical, except for certain range planting. Good grazing management i difficult becaue livetock will electively overgraze certain grae while nearly avoiding other grae. In addition, an uneven ditribution of rainfall during the eaon will encourage growth of certain grae while weakening other grae. Advantage of Recommended Varietie The election of adapted varietie can be jut a critical to a ucceful eeding a the pecie choice. About 25 gra pecie in Nebraka are known to have characteritic that make them valuable enough to develop improved varietie for new eeding. Thee pecie grow over broad geographic area and have divere genetic trait that help individual plant adapt to pecific oil and ite condition. Varietie of thee pecie have been developed to perform ignificantly better in their adapted area than other varietie or natural wild train. Adapted varietie are predictably uperior in vigor, production, peritance, and reitance to inect and dieae within their area of adaptation. Importance of Uing Certified Seed Planting certified eed aure the genetic purity and eed quality deignated on the eed tag. Certified eed i planted, grown, harveted, proceed, and marketed following trict tandard. Inpection during production and proceing help aure that thee tandard have been met. Only eed that meet thee tandard may carry the certified eed label. Planting eed of quetionable or unknown origin and performance i a gamble that mot people cannot afford. Uing the Map and Table The following map, Major Land Reource Area ForSelecting Adapted Gra Varietie, depict 16 region within the tate. The table, Varietie of Grae for Ue in Major Land Reource Area of Nebraka, how which gra varietie are bet adapted to different ite in each region. After identifying the region on the map, ue the table to elect an appropriate gra variety for your ite. (Site are further decribed in Footnote 2 of the table.) Gra varietie are lited alphabetically under two ubheading: Warm-eaon and Cool-eaon Grae. Iued in furtherance of Cooperative Extenion work, Act of May 8 and June 30, 1914, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Leo E. Luca, Director of Cooperative Extenion, Univerity of Nebraka, Intitute of Agriculture and Natural Reource.
