Knighten was one of 18 players to earn first-team All-America accolades from the NFCA in 2016 (1 of 11 position players and 1 of 5 infielders). Knighten is one of eight 2016 first-team All-Americans who return for the 2017 season. Three of those eight players are from the Big Ten Conference. In addition to being a 2016 first-team All-American, Knighten earned first-team All-Midwest Region accolades in both 2015 and Knighten is also the only player on the Huskers 2017 roster who has earned All-Big Ten honors in her career. Knighten is a three-time All-Big Ten selection, earning second-team accolades as a freshman in 2014, before being a first-team selection in both 2015 and While Knighten is the only Husker on the 2017 roster who has earned All-Big Ten recognition, senior Cassie McClure was a second-team All-Big 12 selection as a freshman at Texas Tech in McClure is also a three-time all-region pick. She has earned first-team All-Midwest Region honors in each of her first two seasons at Nebraska after being named to the All-Central Region third team as a freshman at Texas Tech in McClure, who has been recognized on the all-region team at the pitcher/utility position, is one of only four active Division I pitchers to be a three-time all-region performer. Nebraska s captains this spring are seniors MJ Knighten and Lotte Sjulin and junior Madi Unzicker. Junior Madi Unzicker is serving as team captain, but she will miss the 2017 season after undergoing season-ending knee surgery last fall. Nebraska s 2017 roster consists of 21 players, which ties for the largest roster in school history (also 1992). The Husker roster features eight Nebraska natives, tying for the program s most in-state players since softball became an NCAA sport in The roster features seven freshmen, tied for the most in Rhonda Revelle s 25 seasons. The last time Revelle had seven freshmen was in 2013, when the Huskers made their last trip to the Women s College World Series. Four Huskers were named their state s high school player of the year: freshman Haley Donaldson (Colorado); juniors Kaylan Jablonski and Madi Unzicker (Nebraska); and senior Cassie McClure (Texas). Rhonda Revelle is in her 25th season leading her alma mater in Revelle is the second-longest serving female head coach in the history of Nebraska Athletics. Revelle owns 913 wins at NU. She is the all-time wins leader (male or female) in Nebraska Athletics history. Associate Head Coach Lori Sippel is in her 28th year at Nebraska. Sippel is the longest-tenured female assistant coach in the history of Nebraska Athletics. Revelle ( ) and Sippel ( ) also played for Nebraska. Counting their time as both a player and coach, Revelle and Sippel have been a part of 1,217 of Nebraska s 1,394 all-time victories (87 percent). Assistant coach Diane Miller rounds out the Husker coaching staff. In her ninth season, Miller has helped Nebraska s offense set more than 35 school records. Fourteen of Nebraska s 28 opponents made the 2016 NCAA Tournament, and 23 of the Huskers 52 games come against 2016 postseason teams (44 percent). NU will also play 41 of its 52 games against teams from a Power Five conference (79 percent). Including the Big Ten Tournament, Nebraska is scheduled to travel more than 20,000 miles in 2017 while playing games in 11 states and Mexico NEBRASKA NUMERICAL ROSTER No. Name Ht. Yr. Pos. 3 3 WHAT NEBRASKA RETURNS: OFFENSE Nebraska brings back the majority of its offensive production from 2016, but the Huskers must also replace four talented hitters from last year s lineup, a quartet that combined to start more than 800 games in their careers. The 2016 Husker offense ranked second in school history in home runs (65), third in slugging percentage (.474) and on-base percentage (.390), fourth in (299) and extrabase hits (144) and fifth in runs scored (321). Nebraska returns more than half of that production in nearly every offensive category this spring. The top returner is MJ Knighten, who earned first-team All- America honors in 2016 after hitting.376 with 21 homers, 60, 39 walks and a.749 slugging percentage. She ranked fourth nationally in home runs, 13th in runs per game, 19th in per game and 23rd in slugging percentage. In the NU record book, Knighten finished second in home runs, runs and slugging percentage while ranking fourth in and sixth in walks. Knighten enters her final season with a.368 career average, 35 home runs and 158. Classmate Cassie McClure also boasts a career average above.300, as the three-time all-region selection ranks second to Knighten among all 2017 Huskers with a.323 career average, 17 homers and 106. Junior Laura Barrow (.313) is the only other current Husker with a career batting average above.260, although the returning Huskers - minus junior Madi Unzicker, who will miss the 2017 season due to injury - boast a collective.303 career average. The Huskers must replace four regulars from last year s lineup, including two-time All-American Kiki Stokes, twotime All-Big Ten selection Alicia Armstrong, 2016 All-Big Ten honoree Mattie Fowler and Dawna Tyson. Together, that group produced four of Nebraska s top six batting averages in Stokes led the Huskers with a.409 average, 74 hits, 12 doubles, three triples, and 20 stolen bases last season. NU returns four of its five pitchers, led by senior Cassie McClure and junior Kaylan Jablonski. McClure led Nebraska in wins (17), appearances (40), starts (23), complete games (11), innings pitched (156.1), strikeouts (113) and saves (5) last spring, while posting a record with a 3.49 ERA. McClure saw the most extensive action of her career in 2016 and responded with her best season, posting three wins over top-10 teams and twice being recognized as the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week en route to earning first-team all-region accolades. Jablonski finished her sophomore season with an 8-5 record and a 4.81 ERA. She finished second on the team behind McClure in appearances (30), starts (18), innings (106.1) and strikeouts (73), all of which were career highs. Juniors Caitlin Bartsch (0-0, 3.32 ERA in 6.1 IP) and Tayor Kadavy (0-0, 8.08 ERA in 4.1 IP) also return. The four returners fared well last fall. In six games totaling 47.0 innings against Division I opponents in the fall, NU posted a 0.77 ERA while allowing a total of only 11 runs. While four pitchers return, NU must replace Emily Lockman, a two-time All-Big Ten performer and two-time first-team All-Midwest selection. Lockman s career totals in wins, starts, innings and strikeouts are all greater than that of Nebraska s four returning pitchers combined. RETURNING PITCHING IN 2017 Category 2016 Total Returned Pct.
