For Immediate Release: March 11, 2003 Players to Watch 4Lisa Wangler, Sr., OF Wangler went 5-for-10 (.500) with two doubles, a triple and four runs scored in three games at the Seminole Invitational March 7-8. Wangler has hit safely in 14 of NU s 16 games, and she leads NU with eight multiple-hit games. The No. 2 batter in the lineup, Wangler ranks first on the team with a.444 average, six doubles, five home runs, 13 runs scored and 23 RBIs. 4Summer Tobias, Fr., RHP After allowing teams to combine for five earned runs in her first four collegiate appearances, Tobias has given up just one earned run in her last four appearances on the mound. Tobias struck out 10 batters in her first four games, compared to 19 in her last four. Tobias is 6-1 with a 1.07 ERA. 4Kim Ogee, Sr., OF Ogee continues to inch toward the Nebraska career stolen bases record, which she would break with eight more steals. Ogee has four stolen bases in her last six games after stealing just one base in her first 10 games of Huskers Hope to Get Back on Track at Competitive Kia Classic The third-ranked Nebraska softball team will make its first-ever appearance in the Kia Classic hosted by Cal State Fullerton March The event, which is widely regarded as one of the most elite collegiate tournaments in the nation, features five teams that qualified for the 2002 NCAA Women s College World Series. Ten of the 16 teams are ranked in this week s USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll, and six are ranked in the top eight, including No. 2 Arizona, Nebraska, No. 4 Washington, No. 5 Texas, No. 6 Oklahoma and No. 8 Cal State Fullerton. The 16-team field will be separated into four pools. Following the conclusion of pool play Saturday morning, teams will be seeded into a 16-team single-elimination bracket. The tournament champion will be crowed Sunday at 2 p.m. The Huskers will enter the Kia Classic with redemption on their minds after suffering a surprising upset to unranked Troy State, 4-3, in eight innings March 8 in their most recent contest. However, NU, which has played just six games in the past three weeks because of rain outs and weather problems, faces a challenging slate in its attempt to get back on track. Nebraska s pool includes three opponents who finished the 2002 season ranked among the top 20 in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches poll. The Huskers open pool play against No. 13 DePaul Thursday, March 13, at 7 p.m. before taking on previously-ranked Notre Dame at 9 p.m. NU concludes pool play Friday, March 14, against Fresno State. NU is winless against DePaul in four meetings, most recently dropping a 3-1 decision Feb. 24, The Huskers are 5-1 all-time vs. Notre Dame, and the teams split last year. NU defeated the Fighting Irish, 5-1, May 19, 2002, in the NCAA regional final at Iowa City, Iowa. Nebraska owns a 7-10 series record against Fresno State, but the Huskers have already defeated the Bulldogs once this season. NU took a 1-0 win in the season opener for both teams Feb. 7 at the ASU/Fiesta Bowl Classic. 4DePaul (10-3) No. 13 DePaul is coming off its biggest win of the season, a 1-0 upset of top-ranked UCLA March 9. Blue Demons ace Lindsay Chouinard allowed six hits but struck out eight Bruins and did not allow a walk. Chouinard improved to 6-2 with the victory and lowered her ERA to 0.76 in 59 innings pitched. Outfielder Sara Martz drove in the winning run against UCLA with an RBI single in the top of the sixth. Martz leads DePaul with a.415 average, a.585 slugging percentage and a.432 on-base percentage. The Blue Demons are batting.265 on the season while holding teams to a.174 average. 4Fresno State (5-12) The Bulldogs opened the season ranked 15th but fell out of the poll after a rocky start. Fresno State, which has lost to Big 12 teams Texas A&M and Texas, has dropped three straight games. NU defeated Fresno State in the teams season opener Feb. 7 at the Arizona State Fiesta Bowl Classic. Junior Peaches James tossed a four-hit shutout in the teams first match up, and senior center fielder Kim Ogee produced the only run of the game with an RBI single in the top of the sixth. The Bulldogs are led by Jamie Southern (4-6), who owns a 0.63 ERA with 94 strikeouts in 66.1 innings pitched. Junior outfielder Lori Hoffman leads Fresno State at the plate with a.310 average. 4Notre Dame (7-7) Notre Dame, which opened the season with a top-20 ranking, is 7-7 after splitting a doubleheader with Cal State Northridge. Freshman infielder Meagan Ruthrauff leads the team with a.356 average and five doubles. On the mound, Notre Dame ace Heather Booth (5-3) owns a 2.08 ERA in 40.1 innings pitched. Nebraska will see Notre Dame at least two more times this season. The Fighting Irish will travel to Lincoln Tuesday, April 15, for a double header at 3 p.m. Notre Dame Coach Deanna Gumpf played collegiately at Nebraska from 1989 to Single-game reserved tickets are $6. Single-game general admission tickets are $4. University of Nebraska students receive free admission. To purchase tickets, call the Nebraska ticket office at BIGRED. Offensive Team Notes 4Nebraska owns a Big-12 best.315 batting average despite facing some of the top teams and pitchers in the nation. The Huskers hit.278 last

The last time NU finished a season with a.280 average or better was in Five Nebraska players are hitting.311 or better, and three are hitting over.360. Only three Huskers finished the 2002 season hitting over Nebraska has scored 28 percent of its 74 runs in the fifth inning. NU is outscoring teams 21-2 in the fifth. 4Nebraska did not have a home run at the Seminole Invitational March 7-8, marking the first weekend this season that a Husker has failed to hit one out. Quick Starters At 14-2, Nebraska is off to one of the best starts in school history. Nebraska is on track to challenge the mark for the best 20-game start ever. The 1986, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2002 squads opened the season with a 15-5 record. NU already tied the mark for the best 13-game start in school history after going 12-1 in its first 13 contests. The Huskers also went 12-1 to start the 1996 and 2002 seasons. Wangler Watch Through the Huskers first 16 games, Lisa Wangler has shown surprising power at the plate. The senior left fielder leads the team with a.444 average (24-for-54) with five home runs, four doubles, 23 RBIs and an.870 slugging percentage. Wangler has drove in 35 percent of NU s 74 runs, and her 23 RBIs are 14 more than any other Husker has produced this season. The numbers are significant because even though Wangler finished 2002 with a.345 batting average, it was her speed, not her power, that the Huskers utilized. Batting second in the lineup, Wangler led NU with 11 sacrifice bunts and ranked second on the team in stolen bases (21) last year. The Mesa, Ariz., native produced 14 RBIs in 2002, 11 fewer than her current 2003 total. Wangler had zero home runs in In fact, her five homers in 2003 are the first five of her career. Wangler s success in 2003 has come against some of the top pitchers in the nation, as eight of Nebraska s 13 opponents have been ranked in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches top 25. Wangler has recorded four of her five home runs against ranked teams, including one against No. 10 Cal State Fullerton and NFCA All-American pitcher Gina Oaks, one against No. 3 California and two against No. 23 Oregon State. All About Peaches Just 16 games into the season, right-handed pitcher Peaches James has already laid the groundwork for a successful junior campaign. James is 8-1 in Five of her victories have come against top-25 teams, including No. 4 California and No. 7 Cal State Fullerton. James produced her third shutout against a ranked team this season when she held No. 12 Stanford scoreless on two hits Feb. 23 at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. On the season, James owns a 1.35 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 62.0 innings pitched. James already ranks among the Nebraska career leaders in victories, winning percentage, earned-run average, strikeouts, shutouts and saves. A second-team NFCA All-Midwest Region pick in 2002, James posted a 22-9 record with two wins over top-five teams. She finished the season with a 1.33 ERA, holding teams to a.182 average in 227 innings pitched. Sneaky Steffan Sophomore second baseman Anne Steffan has caught opponents by surprise with her effectiveness at the plate from the ninth spot in the lineup. NU s leadoff and No. 2 hitters, Kim Ogee and Lisa Wangler, have combined for a.406 average (41-for-101). The Huskers who have filled the No. 8 and No. 9 spots the majority of the time, Jessica Yoachim and Anne Steffan, have combined for a.381 average (22-for-67). In 2002, Ogee and Wangler combined for a.351 average. NU used a combination of players in the No. 8 and No. 9 spots, and all of them finished with lower than a.225 average. Run for the Records The Huskers will almost certainly force a revision of the Nebraska record books this season. A look at where a few current players stand alltime at Nebraska: 4Senior outfielder Kim Ogee has 84 career stolen bases and needs just eight to break the career steals record of 91 set by Jennifer Lizama ( ). 4Ogee can also break into the top three all-time at NU with two runs scored. Ogee can take over third on the all-time charts with nine doubles, and she can move into a tie for fourth all-time with 11 more at bats. 4Junior pitcher Peaches James needs one save, two shutouts and six victories to break into the top five on all three NU career charts. 4Senior catcher Amber Burgess needs seven RBIs to take over fifth on the career chart. 4Burgess also needs four home runs to tie for fifth all-time at Nebraska. Hot Ticket In 2002, their first season at Bowlin Stadium, the Huskers were ranked eighth nationally in the NCAA Division I softball attendance rankings with 661 fans per game. The mark represented a 118 percent increase over their 2001 average of 356 fans per contest. Nebraska s attendance increase was the largest of any team in the top 10 and the second highest of any team ranked in the top 25 in average attendance. Tickets for the 2003 season can be purchased online at Huskers.com. Nebraska Coach Rhonda Revelle After leading Nebraska to three consecutive 50- win seasons, 2001 Big 12 Coach-of-the-Year Rhonda Revelle begins her 11th year at the helm of the Husker program. The former Nebraska player owns a record at NU, including a record during the past four seasons. Revelle captured her 400th career win on Valentine s Day when the Huskers defeated Cal Poly, 8-2, at the 2003 UNLV Desert Classic. Revelle led the Huskers to one of their most memorable seasons in NU went and captured the program s seventh Women s College World Series bid. Along the way, the Huskers earned a No. 4 ranking in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Division I Top 25 poll Feb. 27, and were ranked in the top five for nine consecutive weeks. NU also set a school record for consecutive wins with 23. Revelle's athletes have consistently earned national and conference awards for athletic and academic excellence. During the past nine years, 12 Huskers have won All-America awards, and 49 Huskers have garnered all-conference honors. A former pitcher for Nebraska from 1981 to 1983, Revelle was a member of the 1982 team that made the school's first-ever appearance in the College World Series and won its first-ever Big Eight Championship. Revelle still ranks among the school's career top 10 in saves (seven) and ERA (1.60). James Breaks Vertical Jump Record Junior pitcher/third baseman Peaches James broke the women s all-time, all-sport vertical jump record for the second time in her career with a leap of 30.5 inches Dec. 12 during the Nebraska softball team s winter performance testing. Last year, James became the first female in athletic department history to jump 30 inches, breaking the previous record of 29.5 inches set by All-American long jumper Angee Henry in Coach Buchholz Senior shortstop Amanda Buchholz is expected to graduate in May of 2004 with a teaching degree. In the meantime, she already has a job lined up for next fall. The Ogallala, Neb., native, will be the head softball coach at Lincoln North Star High School for the 2003 fall season. Thirteen NCAA Bids and Counting... Nebraska softball is in an elite class when it comes to postseason play. The Huskers are one of nine teams to appear in the past eight NCAA Tournaments. Nebraska also has a strong history of earning high seeds in the tournament. For the past six seasons, Nebraska has earned a two seed or higher in the NCAA Tournament. The only other teams to accomplish that feat are Arizona, Michigan, Oklahoma and Washington. Overall, NU has earned 13 NCAA Tournament bids, advancing to the College World Series seven times.
