Oklahoma State head coach Kenny Gajewski was a member of Oklahoma s national championship baseball team in 1994 and spent 10 years as OU s turf and maintenance director. LAST TIME THEY MET The teams met earlier this year at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium as Oklahoma won the series opener, 10-2, in five innings. OU led 3-2 after four innings before hitting three homers in a seven-run fifth inning. CLIFTON ENJOYING A STREAK OF HER OWN Caleigh Clifton has a streak of reaching base in 26 straight games, the longest by an OU player this season and the longest since Lauren Chamberlain reached safely in the final 25 games of 2014 and the first 13 of 2015 for a 38-game streak. During her run, Clifton has 24 hits, 23 walks and 12 hit by pitches. Four times during the streak she s failed to get a hit or walk, but was hit by a pitch to keep the streak alive and four times she s had a hit, walk and hit by pitch in the same game. She s posted a slash line of.429/.641/.732 during those 26 games and has scored 28 runs with 19 RBI, three doubles, a triple, four home runs and eight stolen bases. Clifton is the team s leader in walks and hit by pitch this year. Additionally, she leads the Big 12 and is eighth nationally in OBP at.577, a figure that would rank fifth in OU annals. SOONERS TITLE RUN REACHES FIVE Oklahoma has won an unprecedented five straight Big 12 championships. Prior to this current run, no team in league history had even won three straight conference crowns. Oklahoma has won nine Big 12 regular season titles and four conference tournament championships. It s the highest ranking in each poll this season for OU. Oklahoma is the only program to be ranked every week of the NFCA poll, 319 straight polls. OU slipped one spot to No. 4 in the RPI poll after spending three weeks at No. 3. SELECTION COMMITTEE RANKS OU THIRD On May 1, for the first time ever during the season, the NCAA Softball Championship Sport Committee released a top-10 ranking and the Sooners were No. 3. Florida was No. 1 in the bracket, followed by Michigan, OU, Auburn, Alabama, James Madison, Oregon, Florida State, Washington and Louisiana Lafayette. Though it has no bearing on the final bracket, the same criteria was used: strength of schedule, RPI, head-to-head competition, results versus common opponents, significant wins and losses and locations of contests. TAKING ON THE TOP 25 Through 5/8, OU is 8-4 against top-25 teams, including six straight wins. That ranks tied for third in the country in win pct. (min. 10 games) and tied for 14th in top-25 wins. The Sooners are also tied for 28th in most games top-25 games played. The top five teams in each category are listed below. Wins 1. Florida Alabama Washington Tennessee Six Teams 10 TOUGH SCHEDULE FOR SOONERS IN 2016 Fifteen opponents that reached the 2015 NCAA Softball Tournament, including half of the field from the Women s College World Series, highlight Oklahoma s 2016 schedule. Nine of OU s opponents are ranked in the latest polls and two are receiving votes. Oklahoma has gone 11-5 vs. those teams. Oklahoma s seven losses this year have come to six teams that are a combined (.725). In fact, OU has played the eighth toughest schedule in the country to date based on opponents cumulative win percentage (games as of 5/8). Looking ahead to OU s final two games, Oklahoma State has a.563 winning percentage, which ranks 22nd in the country. Combining OU s past opponents with its future foe, OU opponents have a.616 cumulative win percentage, which ranks eighth in the country. PARKER S WINS FOURTH BIG 12 WEEKLY HONOR Paige Parker was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season on May 10. In going 3-0 over Tulsa and Texas Tech, she gave up one unearned run and seven hits while striking out 25 and walking just two in 19.0 innings. Parker made three starts and threw three complete games with two shutouts, while opponents hit just.115 off her. Parker also won Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on April 12, March 15 and Feb. 23. She has 11 such honors in her career, putting her in fifth place all-time in league annals behind Texas Cat Osterman (25), OU s Keilani Ricketts (16), Texas Blaire Luna (13) and Missouri s Chelsea Thomas (12). Parker was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week, the ESPNW National Player of the Week and the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on April 12 after OU swept Baylor. She was 4-0 on the week and threw three complete games with two shutouts in four starts with a 0.81 earned run average as she gave up three earned runs in 26.0 innings. Parker struck out 19 and walked six while opponents hit just.234 off her. This is the second time in her career that Parker has been named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week, also doing so on April 6 last year. She joins Ricketts as the only players in program history to win the award more than once. Her second Big 12 Pitcher of the Week award came on March 15 when she went 4-0, did not allow a run in 18.0 innings of work and threw the fifth no-hitter of career. She gave up just four hits and struck out 22 against just three walks while throwing two shutouts and combining on another. Opponents hit just.070 against Parker on the weekend. In taking her first honor of the year, she won both starts in complete game efforts at the Troy Cox Classic, giving up one run in 11.0 innings while striking out 15 and walking one. PARKER EMBARKS ON ANOTHER DOMINANT RUN Paige Parker hasn t given up an earned run in 23.0 straight innings and has allowed just two in her last 40.2 frames (0.34 ERA). Earlier this year, Parker had a run of 30.1 scoreless innings from the sixth inning on April 1 against Kansas to the third inning on April 10 at Baylor. It was the longest streak by an OU pitcher since Keilani Ricketts had a 34.1 inning scoreless streak from Feb March 2, The 30.1 scoreless march for Parker was the best of her career and her seventh streak of at least 20 innings. Knighten leads the Sooners with 11 homers and ranks second in slugging percentage (.679), runs batted in (46) and total bases (95). Within the Big 12 she ranks third in RBI per game (0.98), is fourth in home runs and home runs per game (0.23), seventh in slugging and eighth in RBI. The Top Three will be revealed May 25, while the winner will be announced May 31. Teammate Sydney Romero joined Knighten as one of 25 finalists for the honor. KNIGHTEN NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Shay Knighten was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the first time in her career on April 19. Knighten becomes the first position player to win a weekly award from the Big 12 this year and is the first OU freshman to be Big 12 Player of the Week since Lauren Chamberlain on May 15, Knighten was nearly impossible to get out last week, reaching base 11 times in 13 plate appearances. She was 7-9 at the plate with four walks, three runs scored, a double, home run, eight runs batted in and two stolen bases. Her batting average was.778, while she slugged and posted an OBP of.846. YOUTH MOVEMENT COMING THROUGH FOR OU Of the 18 student-athletes on OU s roster, 12 are underclassmen (8 freshmen, 4 sophomores). However, they make up the bulk of the productivity at the plate and in the circle. And they ve done just that. Sydney Romero (3B), Caleigh Clifton (2B) and Shay Knighten (1B) have assumed starting roles in the infield, while Fale Aviu has been the starting designated player for the past 16 games. Outfielders Kylie Lundberg and Raegan Rogers have also seen playing time with Rogers serving as the team s top pinch runner. Clifton leads the team in OBP (.577), HBP (13) and walks (31), while Knighten has a team-high 11 home runs and Romero is tied with Clifton and senior Erin Miller for the team lead in triples (3). A freshman is among the team s top three leaders in average, slugging, OBP, runs, hits, RBI, doubles, triples, home runs, total bases, walks, hit by pitches, sac bunts and stolen bases. Pitchers Jayden Chestnut and Brittany Finney have combined to appear in 30 games with eight starts, going 10-0 with a 2.38 earned run average. Featuring eight freshman, the 2016 class is the largest ever under Patty Gasso and the largest for the program since nine were on the 1988 squad. For reference, the oldest member of this year s freshmen was born in SENIOR CLASS AMONG THE NATION S BEST The 2016 campaign marks the final season for seniors Erin Miller, Tori Nirschl, Kady Self, Kelsey Stevens and Paris Townsend. Over the last 3+ years (Stevens transferred to OU in 2014, Nirschl in 2015), only Florida has a better win percentage and only Florida and Michigan have more wins (as of 5/8). OFFENSE TRYING TO MATCH LAST YEAR S NUMBERS The 2015 OU offense was one of the best in school history, setting records for batting average (.361), slugging (.657), runs (487) and home runs (107). Nearing the end of the regular season, the 2016 squad isn t too far behind, and is even ahead of, what last year s team did at this same point in some categories. Paige Parker and Lea Wodach each had 4.00 GPAs to lead the first time honorees. They were joined on the first team by Erin Miller, Kelsey Stevens, Kady Self, Tori Nirschl and Nicole Pendley. The Sooners were represented on the second team by Paris Townsend and Kelsey Arnold. Parker was also named to the Academic All-District team. PARKER MAKES TOP 25 FOR NATIONAL POY Paige Parker was chosen as one of 25 finalists for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, but she did not make the the Top 10 Finalists when they were announced May 11. MILLER A FINALIST FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD Erin Miller is one of 10 finalists for the 2016 Senior CLASS Award in college softball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition. SOONERS WIN BIG 12 TITLE WITH SWEEP OF TEXAS TECH A five-run fifth pushed OU to an 8-0, run-rule win over Texas Tech in the series opener. Erin Miller reached in each plate appearance, going 2-2 with a homer, two walks and three RBI. OU clinched a share of the title in Saturday s 4-0 win. Lea Wodach and Shay Knighten each hit two-run homers, while Paige Parker faced the minimum 21 batters and struck out nine. The Sooners won the title outright with another run-rule, 10-1, Sunday. Oklahoma scored four runs in each of the first two innings and added two more runs in the third. WIN STREAK OVER ISU AT 27 AFTER SWEEP IN AMES OU s win streak over Iowa State is at 27 games after sweeping a three-game series in Ames. The Sooners only have longer active win streaks over Wichita State (32) and North Texas (28). In the opener, the Sooners trailed 2-1 after four innings before taking the lead back in the top of the fifth. OU then held off a late scoring chance in the bottom of the sixth to win 4-2. Kelsey Stevens threw her third complete game of the season in an 8-1 win in game two. She gave up just one unearned run and matched a season high by striking out nine. To close out the sweep, OU matched a season high in runs during a 12-1 victory. Four different Sooners had multi-hit games, including a career-high three hits from Fale Aviu. Shay Knighten and Caleigh Clifton each homered in the game, while Jayden Chestnut and Brittany Finney combined on the win. SOONERS MAKE STATEMENT IN TENNESSEE WEEKEND OU opened the Tennessee Classic with a 9-0 win over host- No. 12/13 Tennessee. Nicole Pendley keyed the offense with a three-run homer, while Paige Parker threw a five-hit shutout. The loss was the first at home this season for Tennessee and snapped a 19-game home winning streak dating back to last season. The 9-0 win was the team s largest margin of victory over a top-25 team since an 11-0, five-inning win over No. 24 Kentucky on Feb. 16, 2013 and the largest margin of victory over a ranked team on the road since a 10-0, five-inning win at No. 24 Kansas on March 23, The Sooners then scored seven runs over the first three innings Saturday en route to a 9-0, five-inning win over Radford. Jayden Chestnut had a career-high 12 strikeouts as OU finished unbeaten on the weekend with a 2-0 win over Lipscomb. RED RIVER SWEEP Oklahoma swept Texas last weekend in a three-game series, running its winning streak to seven games over the Longhorns, its longest ever win streak in the series. OU withstood multiple rallies to hold off Texas in game one of a doubleheader, 9-8. The top of the order made the difference for Oklahoma. Erin Miller, Sydney Romero and Shay Knighten combined to go 7-10 with eight runs scored and five runs driven in. Miller was also the hero in game two as she hit a walk-off, two-run homer in OU s 5-3 win. Miller and Romero sparked the Oklahoma offense from the top of the order in another 5-3 victory. Miller was 2-2 with two runs scored, two walks and an RBI, while Romero went 2-4 with two runs scored and a run batted in. In the circle, Kelsey Stevens and Paige Parker combined on the win for OU. SOONERS ALSO SWEEP BAYLOR IN WACO Oklahoma became the first team since 1996 to sweep a three-game series at Baylor last weekend, taking over first place in the Big 12 standings in the process. Three home runs Paige Parker s shutout as Oklahoma struck first in the series, 5-0. Parker struck out five and walked three in tossing her seventh shutout of the year, while Sydney Romero hit a solo homer and Erin Miller and Tori Nirschl each added two-run shots in the victory. Kady Self hit a grand slam in the eighth inning and Parker threw a complete game shutout as OU clinched the series with a 4-0 win. Baylor was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since the second and third games of the 2013 season. The Lady Bears didn t get a runner past first base, and after a leadoff single in the fifth, Parker retired the final 12 batters. The Sooners finished the weekend with a 7-4 victory to complete the sweep. Parker earned her third win of the weekend and her fifth straight victory over the Lady Bears dating back to last season. Nicole Pendley had a season-high four RBI, including a three-run homer in the fifth that turned out to be the game-winning hit. OU TAKES SERIES WIN OVER KANSAS Caleigh Clifton s first career home run was a walk-off grand slam as OU beat Kansas in the series opener, 5-2. Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, the Sooners rallied for five runs on three hits, two walks and an error to complete the team s sixth comeback win of the season. OU then saw its winning streak over Kansas in Norman end at 24 games with a 5-2 loss. The Sooners left a season-high 12 runners on base, include two runners in five separate innings. In the finale, Paige Parker struck out a season-high 12 batters as OU captured a series victory over Kansas with a 4-0 win. She struck out two batters in each of the first six innings and retired 17 straight batters at one point. SOONERS OPEN BIG 12 PLAY WITH BEDLAM WIN A tight Bedlam contest turned into a run-rule win as the Sooners beat Oklahoma State in five innings, With Oklahoma leading 3-2 after four innings, the Sooners hit three home runs in a seven-run fifth to notch their 11th straight win in the series. Shay Knighten hit a two-run homer, Kady Self added a three-run shot later in the inning and Erin Miller hit a walk-off, two-run blast to right field to end it. Oklahoma is also now 16-5 all-time in Big 12 openers. In fact, OU has won five straight such games, outscoring opponents 39-6 during the streak.

10 2016 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL 10 Now in her 22nd season at the University of Oklahoma, head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country as evident by her selection to the 2012 NFCA Hall of Fame class. The Sooners have reached the postseason in each one of her 21 seasons, and in the process, advanced to the Women s College World Series nine times. The WCWS run began in 2000 when her team won the NCAA National Championship in OU s first appearance and continued through the 2013 campaign when the team won its second national championship, becoming just the fifth program to win multiple national titles. With 25 seasons as a head coach to her name, Gasso holds a record of (.774) at the University of Oklahoma and has a career collegiate coaching record of (.768). Needing only 1,300 games to get there, Gasso became the second fastest to reach 1,000 wins in NCAA Division I history during the 2015 season. She has won more Big 12 games (285-84) than any coach in the league s history and has twice as many wins as any other coach in OU history. Gasso s Sooner teams have finished second or higher 16 different times since the inception of the Big 12 in They have won over 77 percent of their Big 12 contests, and OU has claimed nine Big 12 regular season and four championship titles under her direction. Keilani Ricketts was the two-time USA Softball National Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013, becoming just the third player in history to win more than once. Gasso has also directed 50 All-Americans, 110 All-Region honorees and 137 all-conference selections. In the Big 12 era, eight Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year a total of 10 times, four have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, three as Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and one as Big 12 Newcomer.
