The Sooners will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face the No. 6 Crimson Tide (45-12, 17-7 SEC), winners of the Tuscaloosa Regional. The best-of-three series starts Friday night at 6 p.m. on ESPN. Saturday s game two at 4 p.m. will also be on ESPN, while if game three is needed, it will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday on ESPN2. SUPER REGIONAL EXPERIENCE Oklahoma is making its ninth overall appearance in the Super Regionals since the format was introduced in Only three schools have been to more Super Regionals, while OU also ranks sixth in all-time Super Regional wins and is eighth in win pct. of teams that have been to at least five Super Regionals. A first-inning home run by Shelby Pendley was the only hit of the game for OU. Erin Miller also scored on an error, but Peyton Grantham s three-run homer proved the difference and Jaclyn Traina struck out nine. More series info can be found on Page 9. No. 6 Alabama (45-12, 17-7 SEC) CRIMSON TIDE REGIONAL WRAP-UP Oklahoma went 3-0 at the Norman Regional to win its sixth straight Regional championship. OU has now won 13 straight Regional games and 18 of its past 19 such games. OU opened the Regional with an 8-0, five-inning no-hitter against Central Arkansas. Paige Parker (4.0 IP) and Kelsey Stevens (1.0 IP) combined to throw the second postseason nohitter in OU history (Keilani Ricketts vs. Michigan, 2013 WCWS) and the second combined no-hitter in program annals. The big blow came in the first inning on Lea Wodach s grand slam. The Sooners then defeated Texas A&M twice to advance. In the first meeting, OU scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by a two-run walkoff homer from Erin Miller, to capture the win, 7-5. In the finale, Paige Parker gave up just two hits and struck out seven and added the go-ahead RBI single in the first inning. PARKER ONE OF THREE FINALISTS FOR TOP FRESHMAN Paige Parker has been named one of three finalists for the NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award. In its second year, the NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year trophy will be presented during a live ceremony on May 26 prior to the opening of the annual Women s College World Series in Oklahoma City. Compared to fellow finalists Alexis Osorio (Alabama) and Jenna Lilley (Oregon), Parker compares favorably, especially since she s the only one of the three that both hits and pitches. (see Page 6 for more on Chamberlain s HRs). On the third pitch, Chamberlain crushed the offering to straight-away center field, easily clearing the fences as her teammates gathered at home plate to greet her. It was the sixth grand slam of Chamberlain s career and her 19th of the season. The home run came in her 212th career game and 584th at-bat. For comparison, Nuveman hit her 90 home runs in 264 games and 691 at-bats. TEAMS DON T RUN ON OKLAHOMA With Whitney Ellis 7-11 on throwing out basestealers, and Lea Wodach 1-1, the Sooners have allowed fewer stolen bases this season than any other team in the country (through 5/17). Lauren Chamberlain, Shelby Pendley, Erin Miller, Kelsey Arnold and Paige Parker were put on the All-Region First Team. Kady Self, Whitney Ellis and Nicole Pendley were placed on the All- Region Second Team. With her place on the first team, Chamberlain joins Norrelle Dickson, Amber Flores and Keilani Ricketts as the only four-time first-team All-Region players in school history. It s the second straight season that OU has had eight selections. The only other schools to have eight All-Region choices were Michigan and Oregon. Oklahoma s five first-team honorees tied for third in the country with James Madison and LSU, trailing only Michigan (7) and Oregon (6). The five first-team selections also tied a school record for Oklahoma, matching the mark set by the 2005 and 2007 squads. SOONERS TAKE HOME TOP BIG 12 AWARDS For the first time in Big 12 history, one team captured all four major season-ending awards as Oklahoma won Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year and Coach of the Year and shared Freshman of the Year. OU has been ranked sixth or better in each poll for the last 16 weeks. The Sooners also dropped one spot in the RPI to No. 14. Oklahoma is the only program to be ranked every week of the NFCA poll. The Sooners entered the rankings at No. 18 in the first poll on January 24, They have not dropped out since straight polls. SOONERS CAPTURE ACADEMIC AWARDS Senior Jessica Vest (4.00 GPA) and junior Kelsey Stevens (4.00 GPA) were each named to the 2015 Academic All-District Team, and the pair was joined on the Academic All-Big 12 First team along with seniors Georgia Casey, Callie Parsons and Shelby Pendley and junior Erin Miller. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA. to qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team s scheduled contests. PENDLEY ONE OF 10 FINALISTS FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD Shelby Pendley has been chosen as one of 10 finalists for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. The finalists were chosen by national media from the list of 30 candidates announced in March. Nationwide fan voting begins immediately to help select the winner. Fan votes will be combined with those of the media and Division I head coaches to determine the winners. The Senior CLASS Award recipient for softball will be announced during the 2015 NCAA Women s College World Series, which runs May 28 through June 3 in Oklahoma City. CHAMBERLAIN, PENDLEY UP FOR USA SOFTBALL P.O.Y. Seniors Lauren Chamberlain and Shelby Pendley have earned spots among the 10 finalists for the 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. Oklahoma and Florida were the only programs to have two players among the top 10. The Top 3 Finalists will be announced May 20, while the winner of the 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award will be revealed on May 26 prior to the start of the WCWS in Oklahoma City. At the time, Baylor dropped to 6-3 in conference play, giving OU a 3.5 game cushion on the Lady Bears. Baylor took it to the Sooners in game one, snapping OU s 12-game win streak with an 8-0, six-inning win. Dating back to last season, OU had won 15 straight games within league play, going down as the second-longest Big 12 winning streak in program history. Oklahoma was able to even the series in game two with a 5-2 win. Georgia Casey had a three-run double in the first inning, while Shelby Pendley added a two-run homer in the second. Paige Parker struck out eight to earn the win. In the finale, Chamberlain tied the home run record to spark a seven-run fourth inning as OU cruised to an 11-3, five-inning win. SOONERS SWEEP LONGHORNS IN AUSTIN For just the second time in history, OU swept a series of Texas in Austin (2000). In game one, Paige Parker struck out nine and the Sooners pounded out 17 hits as Oklahoma took game one of a doubleheader, 8-0. Lauren Chamberlain s 89th career home run then sparked OU to a 3-1 win and doubleheader sweep of Texas. Her homer came in the fifth with OU trailing 1-0, and the Sooners ended up scoring twice in the inning. In the series finale, Kady Self homered twice and Parker threw a seven-inning shutout in relief in a 4-0 win. PARKER, PENDLEY WIN NATIONAL, BIG 12 HONORS Coming off a dominant outing of Texas in Austin, freshman Paige Parker has been named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Week, the NFCA National Pitcher of the Week and the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week. In addition, senior Shelby Pendley was chosen as the Big 12 Player of the Week. Parker carried No. 5/5 Oklahoma (36-5, 9-0 Big 12) to a threegame sweep at Texas last weekend, dominating the Longhorns in the circle. Parker went 2-0 with a save and struck out 21 batters without giving up a run. She allowed just four walks and six hits in 16.1 innings of work to improve her season record to 18-3 on the year. Parker joins former Sooner Keilani Ricketts (2010) as the only freshmen in program history to be named a National Player of the Week. In addition, with five Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honors this season, Parker now trails only Texas Cat Osterman (7) for the most awards in one season for a freshman. For the second straight week, Pendley hit four home runs as she continued her ascent up the all-time home run list. She also led the Sooners, winners of 12 straight, in average, runs, hits and doubles. CHAMBERLAIN, PENDLEY GO 1-2 IN NPF DRAFT Lauren Chamberlain and Shelby Pendley made history on April 1 as they became the first teammates in the history of the National Pro Fastpitch draft to be taken with the first two picks. Oklahoma has now had 20 players drafted to the NPF league. The USSSA Pride selected Chamberlain with the No. 1 overall pick, making her the first player in Oklahoma history to be taken first in the draft. Previously, DJ Mathis was the highest Sooner chosen when the Akron Racers took her second overall in The Pride wasn t done yet, though, with Oklahoma as they chose Pendley with the second pick. GASSO PASSES 1,000 WINS AT OKLAHOMA With a 23-1, five-inning win over East Carolina on March 15, Patty Gasso earned her 1,000th win at Oklahoma. Gasso is the 28th coach in NCAA softball history to reach that figure and the 17th to do it at the Division I level. She is also one of 10 coaches to get 1,000 wins at one Division 1 school. Pendley joins Amber Flores as the only Sooners to accomplish the feat. Flores did it in the Super Regionals versus Washington on May 27, Pendley was 3-3 with three home runs and five runs batted in. She hit a solo homer in the first, a three-run shot in the second and another solo homer in the fourth. SOONERS TIE RECORD SHUTOUT STREAK AT SEVEN Oklahoma tied a school record by throwing shutouts in seven straight games. During the streak, Kelsey Stevens threw three shutouts, Paige Parker had two, and Stevens and Parker combined with Shelby Pendley and Taylor Hodges on the other two shutouts. STEVENS THROWS NO-HITTER, WINS BIG 12 WEEKLY HONOR In her only appearance of the weekend, Kelsey Stevens threw the second no-hitter of her career, and her first as a Sooner, as Oklahoma opened a doubleheader Saturday against IPFW with a 5-0 win at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex in Conroe, Texas. Stevens struck out a season-high 11 batters, one off her career high, and walked just one. The no-hitter was the second of her career. While a freshman at Stanford, Stevens threw a perfect game with 10 strikeouts against Virginia on Feb. 23, VEST WINS HIGHEST BIG 12 ACADEMIC HONOR Senior Jessica Vest was one of three University of Oklahoma student-athletes that were among the 57 recipients of the fifth annual Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award. The award is named for and given in memory of Dr. Gerald Lage, who was the Faculty Athletics Representative at Oklahoma State University from To be eligible for this award, students must have earned 100 hours with a cumulative 3.80 GPA, be a letterwinner and must be in residence at their institution for at least one academic year. 8 2015 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL 8 BIG 12 PLAYERS OF THE WEEK Lauren Chamberlain has been a three-time Big Player of the Week and Shelby Pendley has won one, while Pitcher of the Week has gone to Paige Parker six times and Kelsey Stevens once. Feb. 10 Chamberlain hit.500 (6-12) with three HR, 12 RBI, nine runs scored, nine BB, a.714 OBP and slugging percentage. Parker, threw a perfect game, as she went 2-0 with a save and 0 ER in 11.2 innings. She struck out 20 and walked just one while giving up only two hits. Opponents hit.054 off her. Feb. 17 Chamberlain hit.533 (8-15), with seven runs scored, eight hits, three HR, nine RBI and five BB. She slugged and got on base at a clip of.650. March 3 Stevens threw the first no-hitter of her OU career as she struck out 11 in a win over IPFW. March 10 Chamberlain went 7-10 (.700) with six runs scored, 11 RBI and three BB. Of her seven hits, five went for extra-bases including four HR. In addition to a perfect game, Parker struck out a career-high 10 batters in a win over Samford. March 17 Pendley reached safely in 17 of 20 plate appearances for a.850 OBP by going (.800) at the plate with five BB. Of her 12 hits, eight were HR and two were doubles to slug Parker threw her third perfect game of the season. March 24 Parker went 2-1, including a shutout of McNeese State, with a 1.70 earned run average and 25 strikeouts in 24.2 innings. April 14 In a three-game sweep at Texas, Parker was 2-0 with a save. She had 21 strikeouts, four walks and six hits in 16.1 innings scoreless innings. For the second straight week, Pendley hit four home runs and also led the Sooners in average (.692), runs (6), hits (9) and doubles (1). April 28 Paige Parker went 3-1 against Oklahoma State and Kansas, striking out 25 in 21.1 innings and giving up just six hits for an opponents average of.087. May 5 Along with throwing her fourth perfect game, Parker threw 7.0 innings with 16 strikeouts and no runs or hits allowed against North Texas and Utah Valley. 12 2015 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL 12 Now in her 21st season at the University of Oklahoma, head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country as evident by the selection to the 2012 NFCA Hall of Fame class. The Sooners have reached the Women s College World Series nine times during her tenure, and in the process, advanced to the postseason in each one of her seasons. The WCWS run began in 2000 when her team won the NCAA National Championship in OU s first appearance and continued through the 2013 campaign when the team won its second national championship, becoming just the fifth program to win multiple national titles. With 24 seasons as a head coach to her name, Gasso has a career collegiate coaching record of (.766) and holds an overall record of (.772) at the University of Oklahoma. Needing only 1,300 games to get there, Gasso became the second fastest to reach 1,000 wins in NCAA Division I history during the 2015 season. She has won more Big 12 games (273-83) than any coach in the league s history and has twice as many wins as any other coach in OU history. Gasso s Sooner teams have finished second or higher 16 different times since the inception of the Big 12 in They have won over 76 percent of their Big 12 contests, and OU has claimed eight Big 12 regular season and four championship titles under her direction. Keilani Ricketts was the two-time USA Softball National Player of the Year in 2012 and 2013, becoming just the third player in history to win more than once. Gasso has also directed 47 All-Americans, 110 All-Region honorees and 137 all-conference selections. In the Big 12 era, eight Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year a total of 10 times, four have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, three as Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and one as Big 12 Newcomer. In 2010, Amber Flores became the first player in league history to earn Player of the Year honors twice, while in 2015, Shelby Pendley joined her in winning the award twice. The OU softball success under Gasso has also spilled over into the classroom where the Sooners have been honored with 104 academic all-conference honors. Seven of those have gone on to become Academic All-Americans, including Lana Moran, the 2000 Academic All-American of the Year.
