OU first played in Nevada in This trip is OU s first appearance in the state since SHULTS GETS FRESHMAN SEASON OFF TO A BANG Freshman Jessica Shults (Valencia, Calif.) has gotten her rookie season off to a great start. Shults hit a grand slam in her first collegiate at-bat and of her four hits this season, three are home runs. Shults leads OU in runs scored (4), RBI (8), total bases (13) and slugging percentage (1.083). NIX LEADING OFF IN THE RIGHT WAY Junior college transfer Haley Nix (Daingerfield, Texas) leads off the Oklahoma lineup and has done her job of getting on base. Nix is tied for the team lead with five hits but leads the team in walks with six. Nix is hitting.625 with an on-base percentage of.786. JONES OFF TO A GREAT START Of players who have at least one at-bat in all four games played this season, junior Chana e Jones (San Jose, Calif.) is tied for the team lead with five hits. Jones has five RBI on the year with a.875 slugging percentage. Jones manages to reach base 60 percent of the time and already has two doubles on the year. GASCOIGNE GETTING TIME IN THE CIRCLE Freshman pitcher Michelle Gascoigne (Benicia, Calif.) made her first career start as a Sooner on Feb. 17 against St. Gregory s. Gascoigne picked up the win and also saw 4.2 innings of relief against No. 16 Tennessee on Feb. 14. In 8.0 innings pitched, Gascoigne has produced a 0.88 earned run average, giving up just one earned run and four hits. She has registered 12 strikeouts and issued just two walks. RICKETTS A TALL TASK TO HANDLE At six feet, two inches, freshman Keilani Ricketts (San Jose, Calif.) is a threat in the circle and at the plate. Ricketts started all three games at Dot Richardson s National Collegiate Softball Invitational and went 2-1 at the event. Against Chattanooga, Ricketts was brilliant recording 12 strikeouts and delivering the sacrifice fly that scored the game s only run. FLORES CLOSING IN ON ALL-TIME HOME RUN RECORD Senior Amber Flores (Calexico, Calif.) blasted the 42nd home run of her career Wednesday evening. Flores needs just six long balls to tie Samantha Ricketts atop the Oklahoma career list in the category. OKLAHOMA, ARIZONA RANKED IN EVERY NFCA POLL The Sooners have been ranked in the NFCA poll since its inception, which spans 211 weeks. Oklahoma and Arizona are the only programs who have been ranked every week the poll has been released. FLORES SELECTED IN NPF DRAFT Senior Amber Flores (Calexico, Calif.) was selected by the USSSA Pride in the 2010 National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft on Feb 10. Flores was taken fifth overall with the first pick in the second round. FLORES COLLEGIATE POY FINALIST Senior Amber Flores (Calexico, Calif.) was named top 50 finalists for USA Softball s Collegiate Player of the Year, the Amateur Softball Association announced Jan. 27. The 2010 watch list is comprised of 50 players representing 35 schools and 14 different NCAA Division I Conferences. The ASA will announce the 25 finalists on April 7. VANDEVER NAMED TEAM CAPTAIN Senior catcher Lindsey Vandever (Davenport, Okla.) has been named team captain for the 2010 softball season. The team selected the captain based on characteristics such as work ethic, positive attitude and consistency both on and off the field. OU TABBED PRESEASON FAVORITE The University of Oklahoma softball team received seven of 10 firstplace votes and tallied 79 points to receive top billing in the 2010 Big 12 coaches preseason poll, as announced on Jan. 15. The selection marks the second straight season in which Oklahoma has been chosen as the preseason favorite.

5 2010 OKLAHOMA SOFTBALL 5 Now in her 16th season at the University of Oklahoma, head coach Patty Gasso has molded the OU softball program into a national power and permanently placed herself among the elite college softball coaches in the country. The Sooners have reached the Women s College World Series five times during her tenure, in the process, advanced to the postseason in each of her previous 15 seasons. The WCWS run began in 2000 when her team won the NCAA National Championship in OU s first appearance. Is she the best coach in the history of Oklahoma softball? Undoubtedly. Is she the greatest coach in Big 12 history? The stats say she is. The OU softball success under Gasso has also spilled over into the classroom where the Sooners have been honored with 73 academic all-conference honors. Six of those have gone on to become Academic All-Americans, including Lana Moran, the 2000 Academic All-American of the Year. Gasso and her staff have consistently been recognized for their efforts on and off the field. The staff was awarded three consecutive Speedline/NFCA Midwest Region Coaching Staff of the Year awards from and received the national honor in Gasso and staff have claimed the Midwest honor in five of their 15 seasons with the most recent award coming in In addition, Gasso has been named the Big 12 and Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1996, 1999 and She was named the 2009 Big 12 Coach of the Year. Each season, she continues to build what is a very strong argument. Currently in her 20th season as a head coach, Gasso has a career collegiate coaching record of (.748) and holds an overall record of (.750) at the University of Oklahoma. She has won more Big 12 games (186-61) than any coach in the league s history and has twice as many wins as any other coach in OU history. Gasso s Sooner teams have finished second or higher 11 different times since the inception of the Big 12 in They have won 75 percent of their Big 12 contests and OU has claimed four Big 12 regular season and three tournament titles under her direction. Numerous Sooner players have prospered under Gasso s tutelage and garnered national, regional and conference recognition. She has directed 32 All-Americans, 61 All-Region honorees and 101 all-conference selections. In the Big 12 era, six Sooners have been named Big 12 Player of the Year, two have been selected as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, one as Big 12 Newcomer and Lauren Eckermann was named OU s first Big 12 Pitcher of the Year in In addition, 2005 graduate Heather Scaglione was a two-time Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Savannah Long became the first infielder to earn the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honor in Most recently, Amber Flores was named Big 12 Player of the Year in GASSO S YEAR-BY-YEAR AT OKLAHOMA The 2009 Oklahoma softball team wrapped up the year overall and 14-4 in Big 12 play. The Sooners won their fourth Big 12 regular season title and hosted an NCAA Regional for the second consecutive year. Flores was named Big 12 Player of the Year and Gasso earned her fourth Big 12 Coach of the Year honor. Flores was named a first team All-America selection by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and senior Samantha Ricketts was named to the second team. Flores, Ricketts, junior Lindsey Vandever and senior D.J. Mathis were named to the first team All-Central Region by the organization. Flores was also a top 10 finalist for USA Softball s Collegiate Player of the Year. Five Sooners were named to the first team All-Big 12 team and three were named to the second team. OU placed five studentathletes on the All-Big 12 Academic team. Flores was named Big 12 Player of the Week three times, while Huey earned the honor once. Mathis was also named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week once during the season. Flores earned NFCA/Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honors and ESPN/USA Softball National Player of the Week honors on Feb. 10. Gasso and her husband, Jim, reside in Norman with their youngest son, D.J., a freshman at Norman North. The couple s oldest son, J.T., plays baseball at East Central University in Ada, Okla.
